We first presented an optical device of integrated beam splitter and filter based on the photonic crystal fibres (PCFs) with both ends of the air-holes filled with liquid crystal (LCs). All of the air-holes of one end of PCFs were filled with LCs and for the other end two air-holes near the solid core were selectively filled with LCs. As a beam splitter, when the two-filled-holes end was heated, the light power partly transmitted steadily from the central solid core into the two holes filled with LCs after the clearing point. As a filter, when the two-filled-holes end was heated, a peak near 760 nm of transmission spectrum got weak and another peak near 608 nm was maintained. While heating the full-filled end, the peak near 760 nm got strong and the peak near 608 nm got extremely weak. So this optical device could be applied to beam splitter and filter.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Series of low-birefringence liquid crystal mixtures composed of alkyl alkylbicyclohexyl carbonates and modified mixtures with other compounds have been formulated, their refractive indices and electric permittivity measured upon temperature. They exhibit the ordinary refraction index no lower than the refractive index of silica glass in a different range of temperature. This enables to observe in photonic liquid crystal fibres (PLCFs) a change in the light propagation mechanism from photonic band gap guiding to modified total internal reflection at different temperatures. Selected applications of PLCFs are also discussed.  相似文献

We propose an all-fibre one-way filter based on photonic crystal fibres (PCFs) with both ends of the air holes filled with liquid crystals. According to the resonant condition of the antiresonant reflecting optical wave-guide (ARROW) model, the transmission characteristics of the proposed photonic liquid crystal fibres (PLCFs) are directional. The transmission spectra can be tuned by changing the incident direction of the input light and the length of the empty PCF section. The shorter the length of the PLCFs, the more peaks in the transmission spectra. The all-fibre both-end-filled PLCFs can be applied to the design of one-way multiband filters.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A D-shaped photonic crystal fibre filled with liquid crystal was demonstrated as an amphibious sensor for detection of both temperature and refractive index, when combined with plasma materials. Specifically, the optical component is implanted into a complete optical system ensuring modulation of the external electric field. When the refractive index of the external solution changes from 1.0 to 1.6, the y-polarised mode has a loss spectrum with a wavelength sensitivity of up to 2275 nm/RIU, and the corresponding amplitude sensitivity is ?88.2RIU?1. When the perceived temperature changes from 15°C to 50°C, the temperature of the sensor is correspondingly expressed as the maximum wavelength sensitivity of 9.09 nm/°C and the amplitude sensitivity of ?0.311°C?1. In addition, the actual micro-operation processes have been studied in detail, such as polishing depth, coating thickness and coating method. This provides practical ideas for real-time sensing analysis that requires harsh environments.  相似文献

Electro-optical and spectral studies of isotropic photonic crystal fibre (PCF) infiltrated with photo-aligned ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) under influence of external electric field are described. Desired alignment of FLC molecules is provided by generation of photo-aligning surface on the inner side of PCF structure. Propagation of light spectrum, as well as light attenuation have been investigated in details. Moreover, the electro-optical response times were measured and analysed.  相似文献

The compound 6-[4-(trans -4-pentylcyclohexyl)phenoxy]hexyl acrylate (2) was prepared and homopolymerized. The block copolymer and copolymer of 2 with styrene were synthesized by photopolymerization and solution techniques, respectively. These polymers were characterized by IR and 1H NMR spectra and size exclusion chromatography. Polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies revealed that these polymers exhibited smectic A (SmA) phases. POM showed that the homopolymer showed a higher order SmA phase than did the block copolymer and copolymer. After magnetically forced alignment the samples exhibited similar optical texture but the domain size of the liquid crystalline phase increased. Differential scanning calorimetry, POM and XRD data suggest that the SmA domain size decreased in the order hompolymer > block copolymer > copolymer.  相似文献

The conductance of polymer matrix is an important factor for the property of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC). The nanographites are dispersed into the polymer matrix for optimising the dielectric conductive property. The synthesised nanoparticles SiO2 was used as photonic crystal (PC) to work as a template for fabricating PDLC films. A mixture of pre-polymer and liquid crystals (LCs) was infiltrated into the void of the PC and polymerised under ultraviolet light. The void of the PC made uniform the dispersion of the liquid crystals in the films. The optical property of the PDLC films was optimised by doped nanographites and negative charge SiO2 template. The effect of negative charge SiO2 and nanographites on the threshold voltage and driving voltage was researched. The morphology of the PDLC films was studied by the FTIR image. The dispersed LCs droplets were uniformly affected by the addition of the nanographites. The LCs droplets dispersed in the polymer were located in the void of the SiO2 photonic crystal.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We study the optical properties of a cholesteric liquid crystal doped with a fluorescent dye in the regime of highly distorted helix without full helix unwinding. The distortion was achieved by applying a pulsed AC electric field, perpendicular to the helix axis. If the pulse is in the millisecond range, the helix is deformed but keeps its original pitch even for electric fields higher than the theoretical critical field for helix unwinding. In this field regime, very pronounced high-order photonic band gaps are observed, in agreement with our calculations. We theoretically explore the possibility of obtaining viable laser emission at the second-order photonic band gap, and experimentally find that lasing is not only possible but has a figure of merit similar to that of the usual laser at the main-gap region. Therefore, electric-field-induced high-order photonic band gaps are potentially useful for multiline laser applications.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We demonstrate nematic and cholesteric liquid crystal (LC) gyroids and show their photonic properties as photonic crystals by using numerical modelling. The LC gyroids are designed as composite optical materials, where we take one labyrinth of passages to be a solid dielectric, whereas the other (complementing) labyrinth of passages is taken to be filled by chiral or achiral nematic LC, with the intermediate gyroid surface imposing homeotropic (perpendicular) surface anchoring. The nematic inside the gyroid matrix is shown to exhibit a variety of possible orientational profiles which are characterised by complex networks of topological defects – from ordered, semi-ordered, to completely disordered. The diversity of possible nematic states is shown to lead to a rich structure of photonic bands, which can be tuned by the LC volume fraction and the cholesteric pitch, including control over full – direct and indirect – band gaps.  相似文献

该文将光子晶体与分子印迹技术结合,制备了分子印迹光子晶体水凝胶膜(MIPHs)作为光学传感器,用于样品中三聚氰胺的快速识别检测。以三聚氰胺为模板分子,通过垂直沉降自组装、填充聚合、去除模板3个步骤,制备得到了反蛋白石结构的三聚氰胺MIPHs。扫描电子显微镜的形貌表征表明,MIPHs具有高度有序的三维大孔结构。该MIPHs作为光学传感器可以将三聚氰胺的分子特异识别过程转换成光学信号,在对目标分析物分析时具有选择性高、响应快、灵敏度高的优点。此外,可以根据MIPHs的颜色变化利用图像软件分析或裸眼识别的方式实现目标分析物快速识别。实验结果表明,在最优条件下,三聚氰胺浓度为10-11~10-6mol/L时,MIPHs的布拉格衍射峰位移从563 nm红移到608 nm,而对三聚氰胺的结构类似物没有明显响应。  相似文献

Focusing on the coherent optics of phased array, a dynamic theoretical model is built to analyse the process of laser beam steering using the device of liquid crystal optical phased array. Based on the dynamics of electrical field induced liquid crystal molecule rotation and the mechanism of phased control non-mechanical steering, switching time is redefined according to two curves representing receiving power on the current direction and targeting direction. Meanwhile, including the far field distribution, power stability and pointing direction, two cases with large steering step and tiny steering step are evaluated. The steering time between two angles is minished to be less than the switch-off decay time. In addition, the instability on the process of beam steering is obvious although the steering step is only half of beam width. To overcome this instability, tinier steering step is suggested although it is also limited by the driving algorithm and driving circuits.  相似文献

The syntheses of three methacrylate monomers with cinnamate ester side-chains and of a further monomer with a corresponding cinnamide side-chain are described. Two of the monomers, with isomeric structures, were thermotropic liquid crystals. Although the clearing points were very similar the crystal melting points differed by 8°C. One compound also exhibited a monotropic smectic phase, behavior not shown by its isomer. The other two monomers were not liquid crystalline. The monomers were polymerized by free radical polymerization, both as homopolymers and as copolymers with methyl methacrylate. In the case of one of the mesogenic ester monomers, copolymers with a cyanophenyl benzoate monomer were also prepared. Three of the four monomers formed thermotropic liquid crystalline homopolymers and the copolymers with the benzoate monomer were also liquid crystalline. The monomers were considered as photoactive components of polymeric liquid crystals. As a preliminary investigation of their photochemistry, copolymers with methyl methacrylate were prepared and irradiated in solution with a broad-band source. Under these conditions two of the materials show a facile photo-Fries rearrangement of the aryl cinnamate ester group. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A photochemically tunable photonic crystal was prepared by infiltration of the polymer liquid crystal (LC) having azo-chromophores in a SiO2 inverse opal structure. The SiO2 inverse opal film infiltrated with the polymer LC reflected a light corresponding to the periodicity as well as the refractive indices of the inverse opal structure. Linearly polarized light irradiation caused the shift of the reflection band to longer wavelength more than 15 nm. This is caused by the formation of uniaxially anisotropic molecular orientation of the polymer LC. The switched state was stable under interior light, and reversible switching of the reflection band can be achieved by the linearly and circularly polarized light irradiation. This photoswitching property will be suitable not only for various optical materials, but also for introduction of defects in the photonic crystals.  相似文献

An achiral swallow-tailed material, 2-propylpentyl 4-(4′-decyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy)benzoate, p, showing SmA and SmCalt phases was prepared for mixing (by weight percentage) with an antiferroelectric liquid crystal, (S)-MHPOBC, m, for the study. The binary mixture p/15/m85 using (S)-MHPOBC (85%) as a host doped with achiral material (15%) resulted in a phase sequence SmA-SmC*-SmC*A. The electro-optic response of this mixture in the ferroelectric SmC* phase displayed V-shaped switching, while that in the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase displayed a double hysteresis switching. The mixture p85/m15 possessed SmA* and SmC*A phases; V-shaped switching was found in the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase of this mixture. These optical phenomena implied that a binary mixture containing a larger amount of achiral swallow-tailed material and/or possessing relatively lower polarization favours the occurrence of V-shaped switching in the antiferroelectric phase. The results of this work also suggested that thresholdless V-shaped switching in chiral smectic liquid crystals can be achieved by mixing an achiral swallow-tailed material with an antiferroelectric liquid crystal.  相似文献

We study a one-dimensional twisted photonic liquid crystal (TPLC), consisting of various nematic liquid crystal cells adopting a twisted configuration intercalated by isotropic dielectric layers, submitted to a dc electric field (Edc ) aligned along the periodicity axis. We write the corresponding Euler–Lagrange equations describing the nematic layer configuration. By assuming arbitrary anchoring quasi-planar boundary conditions, we calculate the equilibrium textures for the nematic, parametrized by the two types of strength of its interaction (polar and azimuthal) with the plane walls. We write the electromagnetic equations in a 4?×?4 matrix representation and using the transfer matrix formalism, we obtain the transmittance and reflectance coefficients for normal incidence as functions of the external electric field and anchoring strengths. We have observed a remarkable dependence of the electric field on the transmission and reflection spectra in opening and closing band gaps.  相似文献

Measurements of the maximum transmittance of an in-plane switching liquid crystal display showed that it increases as rubbing angle is increased from 10 to 20°. This dependence was analysed in terms of the local variation of electric field intensity between electrodes, which in turn makes liquid crystal at various positions between the electrodes rotate to different angles. The local variation of electric field becomes prominent, especially in the case that the distance between the electrodes is much larger than the cell gap or electrode width.  相似文献

We report on fast-switching and high-efficient optical beam steering based on a polymerisable liquid crystal polarisation grating (PG) in combination with ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) phase shutter. The PG was fabricated in a convenient single-step holographic exposure process using photo-sensitive azo-dye material as alignment layer for liquid crystal (LC) director. A binary electro-optical FLC was employed for circular polarisation selection, which enables the electro-tunable steering of the combined system. The efficiency of 95.7% with 82 μs switching time is obtained for 1064 nm laser. This work provides a versatile candidate for non-mechanical beam steering devices.  相似文献

An electrochromic liquid crystal (ECLC) material composed of only liquid crystal (LC) and ionic liquid (IL) was developed. The LC containing the substituted diphenylacetylene serves as electrochromic (EC) material to realise transmittance and colour change under the direct current (DC) field, while the IL with the designable cation and anion served as electrolyte. Herein, a series of IL electrolytes was screened to investigate how IL tunes the electro-optic performance of the ECLC cell. By testing the electrochemistry window of ILs in EC cells, IL with the [NTf2]? anion shows adequate electrochemical stability when the EC material undergoes oxidation and reduction. The electro-optic performance of ECLC containing 1-ethoxy-4-[2-(4-pentylphenyl) ethynyl]-benzene (PEB) and IL was then evaluated by UV-vis spectrometry under the control of an electrochemical work station. Compared with other PEB-IL, PEB-[Bmim][NTf2] with [Bmim][NTf2] electrolyte shows a satisfactory transmittance at low operating voltage. Furthermore, Pd NPs in situ formed in [Bmim][NTf2] reduced the EC potential and improved the light scattering of the ECLC cell. In this work, we also designed a bifunctional device based on polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) that hosts electrochromic guest molecules, and analysed the electro-optical and electrochromic properties of LC electrolyte mixtures, in order to gain control of the incident daylight and glare in building and automotive applications.  相似文献

Low-frequency driving of a liquid crystal display (LCD) panel to minimise power consumption has drawn much attention recently. In case an LCD panel is driven by a low-frequency fringe field, image flickering phenomenon is detected by the naked human eye when the sign of the applied electric field is reversed. We investigated the effect of electrode spacing on the image flickering phenomenon induced by the flexoelectric effect in a fringe-field-switching (FFS) liquid crystal cell. We found that the image flicker in an FFS cell under low-frequency driving can be eliminated in a simple manner by changing the electrode spacing.  相似文献

Liquid crystal (LC) based tuneable optical microresonators are potential for being used as crucial components in photonic devices. In this article, we report experimental studies on LC micro-droplets dispersed in several dispersing media. We find that the size of the micro-droplets formed in a low refractive index and optically transparent perfluoropolymer are most stable with time than commonly used dispersing media. Using a negative dielectric anisotropy nematic liquid crystal, we show that the whispering gallery mode optical resonance properties such as the quality factor and the free spectral range of stable micro-droplets are independent of the strength of the applied electric field. The optical resonance properties under applied field are significantly different than that of the liquid crystals with positive dielectric anisotropy and are explained based on the elastic deformation of the micro-droplets.  相似文献
