Berge's elegant dipath partition conjecture from 1982 states that in a dipath partition P of the vertex set of a digraph minimizing , there exists a collection Ck of k disjoint independent sets, where each dipath PP meets exactly min{|P|, k} of the independent sets in C. This conjecture extends Linial's conjecture, the Greene–Kleitman Theorem and Dilworth's Theorem for all digraphs. The conjecture is known to be true for acyclic digraphs. For general digraphs, it is known for k=1 by the Gallai–Milgram Theorem, for k?λ (where λis the number of vertices in the longest dipath in the graph), by the Gallai–Roy Theorem, and when the optimal path partition P contains only dipaths P with |P|?k. Recently, it was proved (Eur J Combin (2007)) for k=2. There was no proof that covers all the known cases of Berge's conjecture. In this article, we give an algorithmic proof of a stronger version of the conjecture for acyclic digraphs, using network flows, which covers all the known cases, except the case k=2, and the new, unknown case, of k=λ?1 for all digraphs. So far, there has been no proof that unified all these cases. This proof gives hope for finding a proof for all k.  相似文献

The degree/diameter problem is to determine the largest graphs or digraphs of given maximum degree and given diameter. This paper deals with directed graphs. General upper bounds, called Moore bounds, exist for the largest possible order of such digraphs of maximum degree d and given diameter k. It is known that simulated annealing and genetic algorithm are effective techniques to identify global optimal solutions. This paper describes our attempt to build a Hybrid Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithm (HSAGA) that can be used to construct large digraphs. We present our new results obtained by HSAGA, as well as several related open problems.  相似文献

The transmission of a graph or digraph G is the sum of all distances in G. Strict bounds on the transmission are collected and extended for several classes of graphs and digraphs. For example, in the class of 2-connected or 2-edge-connected graphs of order n, the maximal transmission is realized only by the cycle Cn. The independence of the transmission on the diameter or radius is shown. Remarks are also given about the NP-hardness of some related algorithmic problems.  相似文献

A digraph is quasi-transitive if there is a complete adjacency between the inset and the outset of each vertex. Quasi-transitive digraphs are interseting because of their relation to comparability graphs. Specifically, a graph can be oriented as a quasi-transitive digraph if and only if it is a comparability graph. Quasi-transitive digraphs are also of interest as they share many nice properties of tournaments. Indeed, we show that every strongly connected quasi-transitive digraphs D on at least four vertices has two vertices v1 and v2 such that Dvi is strongly connected for i = 1, 2. A result of tournaments on the existence of a pair of arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at the same vertex can also be extended to quasi-transitive digraphs. However, some properties of tournaments, like hamiltonicity, cannot be extended directly to quasi-transitive digraphs. Therefore we characterize those quasi-transitive digraphs which have a hamiltonian cycle, respectively a hamiltonian path. We show the existence of highly connected quasi-transitive digraphs D with a factor (a collection of disjoint cycles covering the vertex set of D), which have a cycle of every length 3 ≦ k ≦ |V(D)| ? 1 through every vertex and yet they are not hamiltonian. Finally we characterize pancyclic and vertex pancyclic quasi-transitive digraphs. © 1995, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We prove that Moore digraphs, and some other classes of extremal digraphs, are weakly distance-regular in the sense that there is an invariance of the number of walks between vertices at a given distance. As weakly distance-regular digraphs, we then compute their complete spectrum from a ‘small’ intersection matrix. This is a very useful tool for deriving some results about their existence and/or their structural properties. For instance, we present here an alternative and unified proof of the existence results on Moore digraphs, Moore bipartite digraphs and, more generally, Moore generalized p-cycles. In addition, we show that the line digraph structure appears as a characteristic property of any Moore generalized p-cycle of diameter D?≥?2p.  相似文献

Greene's Theorem states that the maximum cardinality of an optimal k-path in a poset is equal to the minimum k-norm of a k-optimal coloring. This result was extended to all acyclic digraphs, and is conjectured to hold for general digraphs. We prove the result for general digraphs in which an optimal k-path contains a path of cardinality one. This implies the validity of the conjecture for all bipartite digraphs. We also extend Greene's Theorem to all split graphs.  相似文献

In this article, we study the kth upper and lower bases of primitive nonpowerful minimally strong signed digraphs. A bound on the kth upper bases for primitive nonpowerful minimally strong signed digraphs is obtained, and the equality case of the bound is characterized. For the kth lower bases, we obtain some bounds. For some cases, the bounds are best possible and the extremal signed digraphs are characterized. We also show that there exist ‘gaps’ in both the kth upper base set and the kth lower base set of primitive nonpowerful minimally strong signed digraphs.  相似文献

Limit points of eigenvalues of (di)graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The study on limit points of eigenvalues of undirected graphs was initiated by A. J. Hoffman in 1972. Now we extend the study to digraphs. We prove 1. Every real number is a limit point of eigenvalues of graphs. Every complex number is a limit point of eigenvalues of digraphs. 2. For a digraph D, the set of limit points of eigenvalues of iterated subdivision digraphs of D is the unit circle in the complex plane if and only if D has a directed cycle. 3. Every limit point of eigenvalues of a set D of digraphs (graphs) is a limit point of eigenvalues of a set of bipartite digraphs (graphs), where consists of the double covers of the members in D. 4. Every limit point of eigenvalues of a set D of digraphs is a limit point of eigenvalues of line digraphs of the digraphs in D. 5. If M is a limit point of the largest eigenvalues of graphs, then −M is a limit point of the smallest eigenvalues of graphs.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce a new class of directed graphs called locally semicomplete digraphs. These are defined to be those digraphs for which the following holds: for every vertex x the vertices dominated by x induce a semicomplete digraph and the vertices that dominate x induce a semicomplete digraph. (A digraph is semicomplete if for any two distinct vertices u and ν, there is at least one arc between them.) This class contains the class of semicomplete digraphs, but is much more general. In fact, the class of underlying graphs of the locally semi-complete digraphs is precisely the class of proper circular-arc graphs (see [13], Theorem 3). We show that many of the classic theorems for tournaments have natural analogues for locally semicomplete digraphs. For example, every locally semicomplete digraph has a directed Hamiltonian path and every strong locally semicomplete digraph has a Hamiltonian cycle. We also consider connectivity properties, domination orientability, and algorithmic aspects of locally semicomplete digraphs. Some of the results on connectivity are new, even when restricted to semicomplete digraphs.  相似文献

A new and efficient procedure for testing a pair of digraphs for isomorphism is developed. It is based on conducting a depth-first search on one of the digraphs followed by a systematic matching of edges using backtracking with very effective pruning. It is proved that for digraphs (ofn vertices) the expected time complexity of this procedure isO(n logn ). This theoretical result is verified empirically on more than 300 large random digraphs. This procedure is shown to be more efficient than any of the existing general isomorphism procedures.  相似文献

We characterize the class of self-complementary vertex-transitive digraphs on a prime number p of vertices. Using this, we enumerate (i) self-complementary strongly vertex-transitive digraphs on p vertices, (ii) self-complementary vertex-transitive digraphs on p vertices, (iii) self-complementary vertex-transitive graphs on p vertices. Finally it is shown that every self-complementary vertex-transitive digraph on p vertices is either a tournament or a graph.  相似文献

Homomorphisms to oriented cycles   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We discuss the existence of homomorphisms to oriented cycles and give, for a special class of cyclesC, a characterization of those digraphs that admit, a homomorphism toC. Our result can be used to prove the multiplicativity of a certain class of oriented cycles, (and thus complete the characterization of multiplicative oriented cycles), as well as to prove the membership of the corresponding decision problem in the classNPcoNP. We also mention a conjecture on the existence of homomorphisms to arbitrary oriented cycles.  相似文献

A kernel of a digraph D is an independent and dominating set of vertices of D. A chord of a directed cycle C = (0, 1,…,n, 0) is an arc ij of D not in C with both terminal vertices in C. A diagonal of C is a chord ij with ji − 1. Meyniel made the conjecture (now know to be false) that if D is a diagraph such that every odd directed cycle has at least two chords then D has a kernel. Here we obtain some properties of claw-free M-oriented critical kernel-imperfect digraphs. As a consequence we show that if D is an M-oriented K1,3-free digraph such that every odd directed cycle of length at least five has two diagonals then D has a kernel. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We prove that every digraph of circumference l has DAG‐width at most l. This is best possible and solves a recent conjecture from S. Kintali (ArXiv:1401.2662v1 [math.CO], January 2014).1 As a consequence of this result we deduce that the k‐linkage problem is polynomially solvable for every fixed k in the class of digraphs with bounded circumference. This answers a question posed in J. Bang‐Jensen, F. Havet, and A. K. Maia (Theor Comput Sci 562 (2014), 283–303). We also prove that the weak k‐linkage problem (where we ask for arc‐disjoint paths) is polynomially solvable for every fixed k in the class of digraphs with circumference 2 as well as for digraphs with a bounded number of disjoint cycles each of length at least 3. The case of bounded circumference digraphs is still open. Finally, we prove that the minimum spanning strong subdigraph problem is NP‐hard on digraphs of DAG‐width at most 5.  相似文献

Given a set F of digraphs, we say a graph G is a F-graph (resp., F*-graph) if it has an orientation (resp., acyclic orientation) that has no induced subdigraphs isomorphic to any of the digraphs in F. It is proved that all the classes of graphs mentioned in the title are F-graphs or F*-graphs for subsets F of a set of three digraphs.  相似文献

A digraph H is homomorphically compact if the digraphs G which admit homomorphisms to H are exactly the digraphs whose finite subdigraphs all admit homomorphisms to H. In this paper we define a similar notion of compactness for list-homomorphisms. We begin by showing that it is essentially only finite digraphs that are compact with respect to list-homomorphisms. We then explore the effects of restricting the types of list-assignments which are permitted, and obtain some richer characterizations. A reflexive digraph is a pair (X, ρ), where X is an arbitrary set and ρ is a reflexive binary relation on X. Let End (X, ρ) be the semigroup of endomorphisms of (X, ρ). We determine the group of automorphisms of End (X, ρ) for: digraphs containing an edge not contained in a cycle, digraphs consisting of arbitrary unions of cycles such that cycles of length ≥2 are pairwise disjoint, and some circulant digraphs (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In this paper we study those digraphs D for which every pair of internally disjoint (X, Y)-paths P1, P2 can be merged into one (X, Y)-path P* such that V(P1) ∪ V(P2), for every choice of vertices X, Y ? V(D). We call this property the path-merging property and we call a graph path-mergeable if it has the path-merging property. We show that each such digraph has a directed hamiltonian cycle whenever it can possibly have one, i.e., it is strong and the underlying graph has no cutvertex. We show that path-mergeable digraphs can be recognized in polynomial time and we give examples of large classes of such digraphs which are not contained in any previously studied class of digraphs. We also discuss which undirected graphs have path-mergeable digraph orientations. © 1995, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
