The transverse 1H relaxivities of aqueous colloidal solutions of dextran coated Dy2O3 nanoparticles of different sizes were investigated at magnetic field strengths (B) between 7 and 17.6 T. The particle size with the maximum relaxivity (r2) appears to vary between 70 nm at 7 T (r2 approximately = 190 s(-1) mM(-1)) and 60 nm at 17.6 T (r2 approximately = 675 s(-1) mM(-1)). A small difference between r2 and r2* was observed, which was ascribed to the effect of the dextran coating. The value of r2 is proportional to B2 up to 12 T after which it saturates. Independent magnetization measurements on these particles at room temperature at magnetic field strengths up to 30 T, however, show a typical paramagnetic behavior with a magnetization of the particle that is proportional to the field strength. The saturation in the curve of r2 as a function of B2 was tentatively explained by the presence of an extremely fast relaxing component of the signal at high field strengths, which is not observable on the NMR time scale. The results of this study can be exploited for the rational design of MRI contrast agents, based on lanthanide oxide particles, with high efficiencies at magnetic field strengths of more than 1.5 T.  相似文献

In this study, we describe the development of a facile and effective route for the synthesis of Fe(3)O(4)-based T(1) contrast agent, which can be useful for in vivo magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Citrate-coated Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles (6 nm) with a narrow size distribution were synthesized by "one-pot green chemistry route" in diethylene glycol (DEG) solvent. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by different analytical techniques including XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and FTIR. At room temperature, nanoparticles exhibited superparamagnetic nature with high saturation magnetization. The longitudinal (r(1)) and transverse (r(2)) relaxivities were found to be 35.45 and 51.81 mM(-1)s(-1), respectively. Contrast agent developed by this method showed a relatively higher longitudinal relaxivity (r(1)) and the lowest relaxivity ratio (r(2)/r(1)=1.46) at 3T MR field. The anionic nature of citric acid facilitated non-specific internalization without impairment of cell viability and functionality. The in vitro studies showed both phagocitic and non-phagocytic uptake of these NPs. In vivo MR imaging of swine showed both T(1) and T(2) contrast effect.  相似文献

Spherical, nonporous and monodisperse silica nanoparticles (NPs) with a diameter of about 100 nm were synthesized and covalently functionalized with lanthanoid(III) (Ln=Gd or Y) chelate complexes, which serve as contrast agents (CAs) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The materials were fully characterized after each synthetic step by different analytical methods, such as dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, DRIFT and NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and elemental analysis, as well as zetapotential measurements. High surface concentrations of Gd(III) complexes (up to 50 μmol g(-1)) were determined by ICP-AES and T(1)-measurements, respectively. MRI experiments show the typical concentration-dependent increase of the longitudinal relaxation rate. T(1)-weighted images of samples with more than 25 μg NPs per 100 μL agar display a clear contrast enhancement in the agar layer. The transverse relaxivities r(2) of the materials are significantly higher than r(2) of the corresponding free Gd(III) complexes in water and medium, whereas the longitudinal relaxivities r(1) are slightly increased. Due to the high loading of Gd(III) complexes, the relaxivities per particle are remarkably high (up to 2.78×10(5) mM(-1) s(-1) for r(1)). Thus, new hybrid materials, based on nonporous silica NPs with high local relaxivity values were synthesized, which can serve as very effective CAs for MRI.  相似文献

A series of zeolite-type silicates containing stoichiometric amounts of Ln(3+) ions in the framework (Ln-AV-9 materials), with composition (Na(4)K(2))(Ln(2)Si(16)O(38)).10H(2)O (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Gd, Dy) has recently been synthesized and characterized. They form paramagnetic microparticles, which as aqueous suspensions have negligible water (1)H longitudinal relaxivities (r(1)) for all Ln(3+) ions studied and quite large transverse relaxivities (r(2)). In this work we further analysed the size distribution of the Ln-AV-9 particles and their r(2)* and r(2) relaxivities. The r(2)* relaxivity effects are explained by the static dephasing regime (SDR) theory. The r(2) relaxivities appear to be strongly dependent on the interval between two consecutive refocusing pulses (tau(CP)) in the train of 180 degrees pulses applied. For long tau(CP) values, the r(2) of the systems saturates at a value, which is always an order of magnitude smaller than r(2)*. These features are explained by a crude model, which takes into account the residual diffusion effect in the static dephasing regime. The large microparticles, although not efficient in T(1) relaxation, are quite effective in enhancing T(2) relaxation, particularly at high magnetic fields. The r(2)* values and the saturation values for r(2) were found to increase linearly with B(0) and mu(0)(2). The largest transversal relaxation rate enhancements were observed for Dy-AV-9 with a saturation value of r(2) of 60 s(-1) mM(-1) and a r(2)* value of 566 s(-1) mM(-1) at 9.4 T and 298 K.  相似文献

Magnetic nanowires were obtained through the in situ synthesis of magnetic material by Fe-controlled nanoprecipitation in the presence of two different protein (human serum albumin (HSA) and lysozyme (Lys)) fibrils as biotemplating agents. The structural characteristics of the biotemplates were transferred to the hybrid magnetic wires. They exhibited excellent magnetic properties as a consequence of the 1D assembly and fusion of magnetite nanoparticles as ascertained by SQUID magnetometry. Prompted by these findings, we also checked their potential applicability as MRI contrast agents. The magnetic wires exhibited large r(2)* relaxivities and sufficient contrast resolution even in the presence of an extremely small amount of Fe in the magnetic hybrids, which would potentially enable their use as T(2) contrast imaging agents.  相似文献

Maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) nanocrystals stable at neutral pH and in isotonic aqueous media were synthesized and encapsulated within large unilamellar vesicles of egg phosphatidylcholine (EPC) and distearoyl-SN-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[methoxy(poly(ethylene glycol))-2000] (DSPE-PEG(2000), 5 mol %), formed by film hydration coupled with sequential extrusion. The nonentrapped particles were removed by flash gel exclusion chromatography. The magnetic-fluid-loaded liposomes (MFLs) were homogeneous in size (195 +/- 33 hydrodynamic diameters from quasi-elastic light scattering). Iron loading was varied from 35 up to 167 Fe(III)/lipid mol %. Physical and superparamagnetic characteristics of the iron oxide particles were preserved after liposome encapsulation as shown by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy and magnetization curve recording. In biological media, MFLs were highly stable and avoided ferrofluid flocculation while being nontoxic toward the J774 macrophage cell line. Moreover, steric stabilization ensured by PEG-surface-grafting significantly reduced liposome association with the macrophages. The ratios of the transversal (r2) and longitudinal (r1) magnetic resonance (MR) relaxivities of water protons in MFL dispersions (6 < r2/r1 < 18) ranked them among the best T2 contrast agents, the higher iron loading the better the T2 contrast enhancement. Magnetophoresis demonstrated the possible guidance of MFLs by applying a magnetic field gradient. Mouse MR imaging assessed MFLs efficiency as contrast agents in vivo: MR angiography performed 24 h after intravenous injection of the contrast agent provided the first direct evidence of the stealthiness of PEG-ylated magnetic-fluid-loaded liposomes.  相似文献

Seed-mediated growth of fluorescent CdSe quantum dots (QDs) around γ-Fe2O3 magnetic cores was performed at high temperature (300 °C) in the presence of organic surfactants. Bi-functional magnetic quantum dots (MQDs) with tunable emission properties were successfully prepared. The as-synthesized MQDs were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS), which confirmed the assembly of heterodimers. When a longer growth period was employed, a homogeneous dispersion of QDs around a magnetic nanoparticle was obtained. The magnetic properties of these nanocomposites were examined. The MQDs were superparamagnetic with a saturation magnetization of 0.40 emu/g and a coercivity of 138 Oe at 5 K. To demonstrate their potential application in bio-labeling, these MQDs were coated with a thin silica shell, and functionalized with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivative. The functionalized MQDs were effectively used for the labeling of live cell membranes of 4T1 mouse breast cancer cells and HepG2 human liver cancer cells.  相似文献

Uniform and extremely small-sized iron oxide nanoparticles (ESIONs) of < 4 nm were synthesized via the thermal decomposition of iron-oleate complex in the presence of oleyl alcohol. Oleyl alcohol lowered the reaction temperature by reducing iron-oleate complex, resulting in the production of small-sized nanoparticles. XRD pattern of 3 nm-sized nanoparticles revealed maghemite crystal structure. These nanoparticles exhibited very low magnetization derived from the spin-canting effect. The hydrophobic nanoparticles can be easily transformed to water-dispersible and biocompatible nanoparticles by capping with the poly(ethylene glycol)-derivatized phosphine oxide (PO-PEG) ligands. Toxic response was not observed with Fe concentration up to 100 μg/mL in MTT cell proliferation assay of POPEG-capped 3 nm-sized iron oxide nanoparticles. The 3 nm-sized nanoparticles exhibited a high r(1) relaxivity of 4.78 mM(-1) s(-1) and low r(2)/r(1) ratio of 6.12, demonstrating that ESIONs can be efficient T(1) contrast agents. The high r(1) relaxivities of ESIONs can be attributed to the large number of surface Fe(3+) ions with 5 unpaired valence electrons. In the in vivo T(1)-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ESIONs showed longer circulation time than the clinically used gadolinium complex-based contrast agent, enabling high-resolution imaging. High-resolution blood pool MR imaging using ESIONs enabled clear observation of various blood vessels with sizes down to 0.2 mm. These results demonstrate the potential of ESIONs as T(1) MRI contrast agents in clinical settings.  相似文献

Water-soluble multi-hydroxyl lanthanoid (La, Ce, Gd, Dy, and Er) endohedral metallofullerenes (metallofullerenols, M@C(82)(OH)(n)()) have been synthesized and characterized for the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. The observed longitudinal and transverse relaxivities for water protons, r(1) and r(2), of the metallofullerenols are in the range 0.8-73 and 1.2-80 (sec(-1)mM(-1)), respectively, which are significantly higher than those of the corresponding lanthanoid-DTPA chelate complexes. Among these Gd-metallofullerenols, Gd@C(82)(OH)(n)() has exhibited the highest r(1) and r(2) values in consistent with our previous results. The observed large r(1) of the current metallofullerenols can mainly be ascribed to the dipole-dipole relaxation together with a substantial decrease of the overall molecular rotational motion. The large r(2), except for the Gd-metallofullerenols, have been attributed to the so-called Curie spin relaxation. The MRI phantom studies are also performed and are consistent with these results. The metallofullerenols will be an ideal model for future MRI contrast agents with higher proton relaxivities.  相似文献

The water-soluble endohedral gadofullerene derivatives, Gd@C(60)(OH)(x) and Gd@C(60)[C(COOH)(2)](10), have been characterized with regard to their MRI contrast agent properties. Water-proton relaxivities have been measured in aqueous solution at variable temperature (278-335 K), and for the first time for gadofullerenes, relaxivities as a function of magnetic field (5 x 10(-4) to 9.4 T; NMRD profiles) are also reported. Both compounds show relaxivity maxima at high magnetic fields (30-60 MHz) with a maximum relaxivity of 10.4 mM(-1) s(-1) for Gd@C(60)[C(COOH)(2)](10) and 38.5 mM(-1) s(-1) for Gd@C(60)(OH)(x) at 299 K. Variable-temperature, transverse and longitudinal (17)O relaxation rates, and chemical shifts have been measured at three magnetic fields (B = 1.41, 4.7, and 9.4 T), and the results point exclusively to an outer sphere relaxation mechanism. The NMRD profiles have been analyzed in terms of slow rotational motion with a long rotational correlation time calculated to be tau(R)(298) = 2.6 ns. The proton exchange rate obtained for Gd@C(60)[C(COOH)(2)](10) is k(ex)(298) = 1.4 x 10(7) s(-1) which is consistent with the exchange rate previously determined for malonic acid. The proton relaxivities for both gadofullerene derivatives increase strongly with decreasing pH (pH: 3-12). This behavior results from a pH-dependent aggregation of Gd@C(60)(OH)(x) and Gd@C(60)[C(COOH)(2)](10), which has been characterized by dynamic light scattering measurements. The pH dependency of the proton relaxivities makes these gadofullerene derivatives prime candidates for pH-responsive MRI contrast agent applications.  相似文献

EuS nanocrystals (NCs) were doped with Gd resulting in an enhancement of their magnetic properties. New EuS and GdS single source precursors (SSPs) were synthesized, characterized, and employed to synthesize Eu(1-x)Gd(x)S NCs by decomposition in oleylamine and trioctylphosphine at 290 °C. The doped NCs were characterized using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy, which support the uniform distribution of Gd dopants through electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) revealed the dopant ions in Eu(1-x)Gd(x)S NCs to be predominantly Gd(3+). NCs with a variety of doping ratios of Gd (0 ≤ x < 1) were systematically studied using vibrating sample magnetometry and the observed magnetic properties were correlated with the Gd doping levels (x) as quantified with ICP-AES. Enhancement of the Curie temperature (T(C)) was observed for samples with low Gd concentrations (x ≤ 10%) with a maximum T(C) of 29.4 K observed for NCs containing 5.3% Gd. Overall, the observed T(C), Weiss temperature (θ), and hysteretic behavior correspond directly to the doping level in Eu(1-x)Gd(x)S NCs and the trends qualitatively follow those previously reported for bulk and thin film samples.  相似文献

A new family of tetranuclear Ni complexes [Ni(4)(ROH)(4)L(4)] (H(2)L = salicylidene-2-ethanolamine; R = Me (1) or Et (2)) has been synthesized and studied. Complexes 1 and 2 possess a [Ni(4)O(4)] core comprising a distorted cubane arrangement. Magnetic susceptibility and inelastic neutron scattering studies indicate a combination of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic pairwise exchange interactions between the four Ni(II) centers, resulting in an S = 4 spin ground state. Magnetization measurements reveal an easy-axis-type magnetic anisotropy with D approximately -0.93 cm(-)(1) for both complexes. Despite the large magnetic anisotropy, no slow relaxation of the magnetization is observed down to 40 mK. To determine the origin of the low-temperature magnetic behavior, the magnetic anisotropy of complex 1 was probed in detail using inelastic neutron scattering and frequency domain magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The spectroscopic studies confirm the easy-axis-type anisotropy and indicate strong transverse interactions. These lead to rapid quantum tunneling of the magnetization, explaining the unexpected absence of slow magnetization relaxation for complex 1.  相似文献

The effects of dealumination, pore size, and calcination on the efficiency (as expressed in the relaxivity) of Gd3+-loaded zeolites for potential application as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents were studied. Partial dealumination of zeolites NaY or NaA by treatment with (NH4)2SiF6 or diluted HCl resulted in materials that, upon loading with Gd3+, had a much higher relaxivity than the corresponding non-dealuminated materials. Analysis of the 1H NMR dispersion profiles of the various zeolites showed that this can be mainly ascribed to an increase of the amount of water inside the zeolite cavities as a result of the destruction of walls between cavities. However, the average residence time of water inside the Gd3+-loaded cavities did not change significantly, which suggests that the windows of the Gd3+-loaded cavities are not affected by the dealumination. Upon calcination, the Gd3+ ions moved to the small sodalite cavities and became less accessible for water, resulting in a decrease in relaxivity. The important role of diffusion for the relaxivity was demonstrated by a comparison of the relaxivity of Gd3+-loaded zeolite NaY and NaA samples. NaA had much lower relaxivities due to the smaller pore sizes. The transversal relaxivities of the Gd3+-doped zeolites are comparable in magnitude to the longitudinal ones at low magnetic fields (<60 MHz). However at higher fields, the transversal relaxivities steeply increased, whereas the longitudinal relaxivities decreased as field strength increased. Therefore, these materials have potential as T1 MRI contrast agents at low field, and as T2 agents at higher fields.  相似文献

Magnetic iron oxide particles are widely used as contrast agents to improve the sensitivity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Their efficiency in MRI is usually quantified by transverse relaxivity (r(2)) in solution. Herein, we synthesized a series of magnetite nanocrystal clusters (MNCs) with ultra-high transverse relaxivity by a polyol process and studied the relationship between r(2) and size of the MNCs. The sizes of MNCs can be tuned over a wide range from 13 to 179 nm. The r(2) of MNC suspensions as a function of the size of the cluster was analyzed and compared with a theoretical model. We found that MNCs of 64 nm had an r(2) value of 650 mM(-1) s(-1), which was more than three times that of the commercial contrast agent and was among the highest reported for iron oxide materials. Compared with the theoretical model, the r(2) value of the MNC suspension is approximately 0.93 of the theoretical prediction. Imaging of the MNC suspensions was performed in a clinical 1.5 T MRI instrument and a comparison was made between MNCs and commercial contrast agents. MRI indicated that the decrease of signal intensity induced by MNCs was in proportion to the r(2) value, which was in accordance with theoretical predictions. These results demonstrate that MNCs with ultra-high transverse relaxivity and tunable size are promising candidates for molecular imaging and clinical diagnosis in MRI.  相似文献

The model compounds (NBu(4))(2)[ReCl(4)(CN)(2)] (1), (DMF)(4)ZnReCl(4)(CN)(2) (2), and [(PY5Me(2))(2)Mn(2)ReCl(4)(CN)(2)](PF(6))(2) (3) have been synthesized to probe the origin of the magnetic anisotropy barrier in the one-dimensional coordination solid (DMF)(4)MnReCl(4)(CN)(2) (4). High-field electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy reveals the presence of an easy-plane anisotropy (D > 0) with a significant transverse component, E, in compounds 1-3. These findings indicate that the onset of one-dimensional spin correlations within the chain compound 4 leads to a suppression of quantum tunneling of the magnetization within the easy plane, resulting in magnetic bistability and slow relaxation behavior. Within this picture, it is the transverse E term associated with the Re(IV) centers that determines the easy axis and the anisotropy energy scale associated with the relaxation barrier. The results demonstrate for the first time that slow magnetic relaxation can be achieved through optimization of the transverse anisotropy associated with magnetic ions that possess easy-plane anisotropy, thus providing a new direction in the design of single-molecule and single-chain magnets.  相似文献

Control over faceting in nanocrystals (NCs) is pivotal for many applications, but most notably when investigating catalytic reactions which occur on the surfaces of nanostructures. Anatase titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) is one of the most studied photocatalysts, but the shape dependence of its activity has not yet been satisfactorily investigated and many questions still remain unanswered. We report the nonaqueous surfactant-assisted synthesis of highly uniform anatase TiO(2) NCs with tailorable morphology in the 10-100 nm size regime, prepared through a seeded growth technique. Introduction of titanium(IV) fluoride (TiF(4)) preferentially exposes the {001} facet of anatase through in situ release of hydrofluoric acid (HF), allowing for the formation of uniform anatase NCs based on the truncated tetragonal bipyramidal geometry. A method is described to engineer the percentage of {001} and {101} facets through the choice of cosurfactant and titanium precursor. X-ray diffraction studies are performed in conjunction with simulation to determine an average NC dimension which correlates with results obtained using electron microscopy. In addition to altering the particle shape, the introduction of TiF(4) into the synthesis results in TiO(2) NCs that are blue in color and display a broad visible/NIR absorbance which peaks in the infrared (λ(max) ≈ 3400 nm). The blue color results from oxygen vacancies formed in the presence of fluorine, as indicated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies. The surfactants on the surface of the NCs are removed through a simple ligand exchange procedure, allowing the shape dependence of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution to be studied using monodisperse TiO(2) NCs. Preliminary experiments on the photoreforming of methanol, employed as a model sacrificial agent, on platinized samples resulted in high volumes of evolved hydrogen (up to 2.1 mmol h(-1) g(-1)) under simulated solar illumination. Remarkably, the data suggest that, under our experimental conditions, the {101} facets of anatase are more active than the {001}.  相似文献

We study the orbitally dependent magnetic exchange in cyanide-based clusters as a source of the barrier for reversal magnetization. We consider the Mn(III)-CN-Mn(II) dimer and linear Mn(II)-NC-Mn(III)-CN-Mn(II) trimer containing octahedrally coordinated Mn(III) and Mn(II) ions with special emphasis on the magnetic manifestations of the orbital degeneracy of the Mn(III) ion. The kinetic exchange mechanism involves the electron transfer from the single occupied t(2) orbitals of the Mn(II) ion [6A1(t2(3)e2) ground state] to the singly occupied t(2) orbitals of the Mn(III) ion [3T1(t2(4)) ground state] resulting in the charge-transfer 5T2(t2(2)e2)Mn(III) - 2T2(t2(5))Mn(II) state of the pair. The deduced effective exchange Hamiltonian that takes into account orbital degeneracy leads to an essentially non-Heisenberg energy pattern. The energy levels are shown to be dependent on both spin and orbital quantum numbers, thus providing direct information about the magnetic anisotropy of the system. Along with the magnetic exchange, the model includes an axial component of the crystal field and spin-orbit coupling operating within the ground 3T1(t2(4)) cubic term of the Mn(III) ion. We have shown that under certain conditions both named interactions lead to the occurrence of the barrier for the reversal of magnetization, which significantly increases when passing from the dimer to the trimer. This provides a possible way for raising the magnetic barrier in the family of cyano-bridged manganese clusters.  相似文献

This Perspective highlights, through several snapshot examples, the importance of electrochemically-driven redox reactions in tuning the electronic/ionic as well as magnetic properties of 3d-metal-based inorganic compounds through a careful control of the metal oxidation state. Although such redox reactions usually imply the electron-ionic duality, they can be extended to insulating compounds (LiFePO(4)) or semiconductors (CoO) as long as we can combine electrochemistry at the nanoscale to reduce diffusion and migration limitations, and provide the compounds with electrons through metallic coating techniques. A thorough investigation of the composition-structure-property relationships of the Li(x)CoO(2) system, through the assembly of LiCoO(2)/Li electrochemical cells has led to the identification of the CoO(2) phase, whose property and stability are discussed in terms of cationic-anionic redox competition, thus bearing some similarity with the high T(c) cuprate superconductors. Such a d-sp redox competition could have structural and electronic consequences. Encouraged by the recently reported superconductivity in Na(x)CoO(2);yH(2)O phase, the room temperature Li(x)CuO(2) phase diagram was reinvestigated through Li-driven electrochemical reactions. A solid solution domain was unravelled but superconductivity was not evident. With Cu-based materials such as Cu(2.33)V(4)O(11), we have shown the feasibility of a new reversible Li electrochemically-driven copper extrusion/insertion process, owing to the enhanced copper diffusion within the structure.  相似文献

By combining the sensing capabilities of nanoscale magnetic relaxation switches (MRS) within multi-reservoir structures, a potentially powerful implantable multiplexed sensor has been developed. MRS are magnetic nanoparticles that decrease the transverse relaxation time (T(2)) of water in the presence of an analyte. The switches encased in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) devices with polycarbonate membranes (10 nm pores) have demonstrated in vitro sensing of the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG-beta), which is elevated in testicular and ovarian cancer. Devices showed transverse relaxation time (T(2)) shortening by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) when incubated in analyte solutions of 0.5 to 5 microg hCG-beta mL(-1). The decrease in T(2) was between 9% and 27% (compared to control devices) after approximately 28 h. This prototype device is an important first step in developing an implantable sensor for detecting soluble cancer biomarkers in vivo.  相似文献
