Vortex rings are produced during the ejection of fluid through a nozzle or orifice, which occurs in a wide range of biological conditions such as blood flow through the valves of the heart or through arterial constrictions. Confined vortex ring dynamics, such as these, have not been previously studied despite their occurrence within the biological flow conditions mentioned. In this work, we investigate laminar vortex rings using particle image velocimetry and develop a new semi-empirical model for the evolution of vortex ring circulation subject to confinement. Here we introduce a decay parameter ?? which exponentially grows with increasing vortex ring confinement ratio, the ratio of the vortex ring diameter (D VR) to the confinement diameter (D), with the relationship $\beta=4.38 \exp(9.5D_{\rm VR}/D),$ resulting in a corresponding increase in the rate of vortex ring circulation decay. This work enables the prediction of circulation decay rate based on confinement, which is important to understanding naturally occurring confined vortex ring dynamics.  相似文献

The periodic formation of vortex rings in the developing region of a round jet subjected to high-amplitude acoustic forcing is investigated with High-Speed Particle Image Velocimetry. Harmonic velocity oscillations ranging from 20 to 120% of the mean exit velocity of the jet was achieved at several forcing frequencies determined by the acoustic response of the system. The time-resolved history of the formation process and circulation of the vortex rings are evaluated as a function of the forcing conditions. Overall, high-amplitude forcing causes the shear layers of the jet to breakup into a train of large-scale vortex rings, which share many of the features of starting jets. Features of the jet breakup such as the roll-up location and vortex size were found to be both amplitude and frequency dependent. A limiting time-scale of t/T ≈ 0.33 based on the normalized forcing period was found to restrict the growth of a vortex ring in terms of its circulation for any given arrangement of jet forcing conditions. In sinusoidally forced jets, this time-scale corresponds to a kinematic constraint where the translational velocity of the vortex ring exceeds the shear layer velocity that imposes pinch-off. This kinematic constraint results from the change in sign in the jet acceleration between t = 0 and t = 0.33T. However, some vortex rings were observed to pinch-off before t = 0.33T suggesting that they had acquired their maximum circulation. By invoking the slug model approximations and defining the slug parameters based on the experimentally obtained time- and length-scales, an analytical model based on the slug and ring energies revealed that the formation number for a sinusoidally forced jet is L/D ≈ 4 in agreement with the results of Gharib et al. (J Fluid Mech 360:121–140, 1998).  相似文献

The effects of exit-wedge angle on evolution, formation, pinch-off, propagation and diffusive mass entrainment of vortex rings in air were studied using digital particle image velocimetry. Vortex rings were generated by passing a solenoid-valve-controlled air jet through a cylindrical nozzle. Experiments were performed over a wide range of exit-wedge angles (10° ≤ α ≤ 90°) of the cylindrical nozzle, initial Reynolds numbers (450 ≤ Re ≤ 4,580) and length-to-diameter ratios (0.9 ≤ L/D ≤ 11) of the air jet. For sharp edges (α ≤ 10°), a secondary ring may emerge at high Reynolds numbers, which tended to distort the vortex ring if ingested into it. For blunt edges (α ≥ 45°), by contrast, stable vortex rings were produced. The formation phase of a vortex ring was found to be closely related to its evolution pattern. An exit-wedge angle of 45° was found to be optimal for rapid pinch-off and faster propagation and better stability of a vortex ring. Diffusive mass entrainment was found to be between 35% and 40% in the early stages of a vortex ring propagation and it gradually increased throughout the course of vortex ring propagation. Entrainment fraction was found to be sensitive to the L/D ratio of the initial jet and decreases when the L/D ratio is increased.  相似文献

A pulsed jet with a period of no flow between pulses (i.e., a fully pulsed jet) produces a multiplicity of vortex rings whose characteristics are determined by the jet pulsing parameters. The present study analyzes the case of impulsively initiated and terminated jet pulses in the limit of equal pulse duration and period to determine the minimum possible vortex ring separation obtainable from a fully pulsed jet. The downstream character of the flow is modeled as an infinite train of thin, coaxial vortex rings. Assuming inviscid flow and matching the circulation, impulse, kinetic energy, and frequency of the jet and vortex ring train allow the properties of the vortex ring train to be determined in terms of the ratio of jet slug length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) used for each pulse. The results show the minimum ring separation may be made arbitrarily small as L/D is decreased and the corresponding total ring velocity remains close to half the jet velocity for L/D < 4, but the thin-ring assumption is violated for L/D > 1.5. The results are discussed in the context of models of pulsed-jet propulsion.  相似文献

Vortex rings were generated by driving pistons within circular cylinders of inner diameter D = 72.8 mm at a constant velocity U 0 over a distance L = D. The Reynolds number, U 0 L/(2ν), was 2500. The flow downstream of circular and inclined exits was examined using volumetric 3-component velocimetry (V3V). The circular exit yields a standard primary vortex ring that propagates downstream at a constant velocity and a lingering trailing ring of opposite sign associated with the stopping of the piston. By contrast, the inclined nozzle yields a much more complicated structure. The data suggest that a tilted primary vortex ring interacts with two trailing rings; one associated with the stopping of the piston, and the other associated with the asymmetry of the cylinder exit. The two trailing ring structures, which initially have circulation of opposite sign, intertwine and are distorted and drawn through the center of the primary ring. This behavior was observed for two inclination angles. Increased inclination was associated with stronger interactions between the primary and trailing vortices as well as earlier breakdown.  相似文献

When a slender body moving forward in open air enters into a confined region, two important unsteady aerodynamic phenomena are generated. An exiting flow is created with a direction opposite to the body movement and inside the confined region, a compression wave is formed. Generation mechanism of compression wave have been extensively studied but so far, no detailed investigation of the exiting flow has ever been reported. The experimental study presented in this paper was undertaken to gain insight into the structure and the evolution of the exit-flow. Experiments were conducted with an axisymmetric apparatus and the explored range of the moving body speed was 5–50 m/s. The study focused on the influence of the body speed and the body nose geometry on the flow. It was shown that the air ejected from the tube entrance generates an annulus jet accompanied by a vortex ring. The vortex development was clarified using laser sheet visualizations associated with unsteady pressure and velocity measurements at the tube entrance. It is constituted by four phases, the pre-vortex phase, the vortex development phase, the vortex convection phase and the vortex breakdown phase. The duration of each of these steps was found to be independent of both the studied parameters in a non-dimensional time scale. Furthermore, neither the body speed nor the nose geometry induced significant changes on the vortex ring evolution, except for extreme conditions (low body speed, VM.B.<15 m/s, and/or very long nose geometry, Lnose/DM.B.>6). The evolution of the vortex ring was compared to that of ‘classical’ vortex ring generated at a tube exit by a piston motion with large non-dimensional stroke length. Main similarities and differences were discussed in the paper. In particular, the formation number of vortex ring observed in our experiments was found to be significantly smaller.  相似文献

The work focuses on the problem of stability and viscous decay of single vortex rings. A tentative classification scheme is proposed for vortex rings which is based on extensive hot-wire measurements of velocity in the ring core and wake, and flow visualization, viz. laminar, wavy, turbulence-producing, and turbulent. Prediction of vortex ring type is shown to be possible, at least approximately, based on the vortex ring Reynolds number alone. Linear growth rates of ring diameter with time are observed for all types of vortex rings, with different growth rates occurring for laminar and turbulent vortex rings. Data on the viscous decay of vortex rings are used to provide experimental confirmation of the accuracy of Saffman's equation for the velocity of propagation of a vortex ring. The work reported herein is supported through a grant of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. A dual-step cylinder is comprised of two cylinders of different diameters. A large diameter cylinder (D) with low aspect ratio (L/D) is attached to the mid-span of a small diameter cylinder (d). The present study investigates the effect of Reynolds number (ReD) and L/D on dual step cylinder wake development for D/d=2, 0.2≤L/D≤3, and two Reynolds numbers, ReD=1050 and 2100. Experiments have been performed in a water flume facility utilizing flow visualization, Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The results show that vortex shedding occurs from both the large and small diameter cylinders for 1≤L/D≤3 at ReD=2100 and 2≤L/D≤3 at ReD=1050. At these conditions, large cylinder vortices predominantly form vortex loops in the wake and small cylinder vortices form half-loop vortex connections. At lower aspect ratios, vortex shedding from the large cylinder ceases, with the dominant frequency in the large cylinder wake attributed to the passage of vortex filaments connecting small cylinder vortices. At these lower aspect ratios, the presence of the large cylinder induces periodic vortex dislocations. Increasing L/D increases the frequency of occurrence of vortex dislocations and decreases the dominant frequency in the large cylinder wake. The identified changes in wake topology are related to substantial variations in the location of boundary layer separation on the large cylinder, and, consequently, changes in the size of the vortex formation region. The results also show that the Reynolds number has a substantial effect on wake vortex shedding frequency, which is more profound than that expected for a uniform cylinder.  相似文献

We investigate the mechanisms of vorticity concentration, reorientation and stretching in a swirling jet, whose dynamics is dominated by the competition of a Kelvin-Helmholtz-type vortex sheet instability and a centrifugal Rayleigh instability. To this end, we employ an inviscid Lagrangian vortex filament technique. It is found that the axial jet velocity profile breaks the symmetry of the pure swirling flow. Conversely, the swirl is seen to modify the case dominated by a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in that it results in the formation of counterrotating vortex rings. A pinch-off mechanism is observed which leads to a dramatic decrease in the local jet diameter. Furthermore, the vortex ring circulation is seen to be time dependent.

Experiments were conducted to investigate the vortex formation process in gravity-driven starting jets at three Reynolds numbers ( 3,528 and 4,716, where D is the nozzle diameter, the average discharging velocity and ν the kinematic viscosity). Planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) was used to visualize the flow while particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to quantify the 2D velocity and vorticity fields. Vortex leapfrogging was found to appear at Re = 2,358, while pinch-off for the leading vortex was observed in the other two cases. Conditions for the vortex pinch-off appeared to be different from those found in the piston-driven starting jets. Although the leading vortex attained the maximum circulation and energy level very quickly after the jet was initiated, its detachment from the main stem may not be achieved necessarily. Attempt had been made to elaborate the different flow characteristics for respective cases from the related distribution of circulation and energy level via the measured velocity field by PIV.  相似文献

An experimental study is carried out to investigate flow characteristics of confined twin jets issuing from the lower surface and impinging normally on the upper surface. Pressure distributions on the impingement and confinement plates were obtained for Reynolds numbers ranging from 30,000 to 50,000, nozzle-to-plate spacing (H/D) in the range of 0.5-4 and jet-to-jet spacing (L/D) in the range of 0.5-2. Smoke-wire technique was used to visualize the flow behavior. The effects of Reynolds number, nozzle-to-plate spacing and jet-to-jet spacing on the flow structure are examined. The subatmospheric regions occur on both impingement and confinement plates at the nozzle-to-plate spacing up to 1 for all studied Reynolds numbers and jet-to-jet spacings in consideration. They lie nearly up to the same radial location at both surfaces and move radially outward from the stagnation points with increasing nozzle-to-plate spacing and jet-to-jet spacing. It is concluded that there exists a relation between the subatmospheric regions and peaks in heat transfer coefficients for low spacings in the impinging jets.  相似文献

The liquid–gas interface of a liquid in an annular container is subjected to a temperature gradient. Since shear stress on the free liquid surface depends on the temperature it shall create a variable shear stress on the surface which in turn yields by viscous traction a thermocapillary convection in the bulk of the liquid. For constant temperature T 2 > T 1 on the outer cylindrical wall and T 1 on the inner wall a steady convection shall emerge. The morphology of the ensuing flow is investigated as a function of the diameter ratio and the liquid height ratio and exhibits the growth of bottom rim vortex rings, which unite to single vortex rings of opposite flow direction to the original single strong vortex ring above it. The results also show how such a system depends on the magnitude of the diameter ratio and the liquid height ratio. The evaluation of the results exhibits the evolution of vortex rings.  相似文献

The axisymmetric vortex sheet model developed by Nitsche & Krasny (1994) has been extended to study the formation of vortex rings (pairs) at the edge of circular (2D) tube and opening. Computations based on this model are in good agreement with the experiments (Didden (1979) for circular tube and Auerbach (1987) for 2D tube and opening). Using this new model, evidences are provided to show that the main failure of the similarity theory (the false prediction of axial trajectory of vortex ring) is due to its ignorance of the self-induced ring velocity (mutual induction for vortex pair). We further reason why the similarity theory succeeds in its prediction of radial movement of vortex ring. The effects of various parameters such as turning angle α and piston speedU p (t) on the formation of vortex ring are investigated. Numerical result shows that turning angle α has no effect on circulation shed τ. We also discuss Glezer (1988)'s summary on the influence ofU p upon the shedding circulation, and finally give the variation of core distribution of vortex ring with α andU p (t). Experimental investigation of vortex rings impinging on inclined surfaces   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Vortex–ring interactions with oblique boundaries were studied experimentally to determine the effects of plate angle on the generation of secondary vorticity, the evolution of the primary vorticity and secondary vorticity as they interact near the boundary, and the associated energy dissipation. Vortex rings were generated using a mechanical piston-cylinder vortex ring generator at jet Reynolds numbers 2,000–4,000 and stroke length to piston diameter ratios (L/D) in the range 0.75–2.0. The plate angle relative to the initial axis of the vortex ring ranged from 3 to 60°. Flow analysis was performed using planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV), and defocusing digital particle tracking velocimetry (DDPTV). Results showed the generation of secondary vorticity at the plate and its subsequent ejection into the fluid. The trajectories of the centers of circulation showed a maximum ejection angle of the secondary vorticity occurring for an angle of incidence of 10°. At lower incidence angles (<20°), the lower portion of the ring, which interacted with the plate first, played an important role in generation of the secondary vorticity and is a key reason for the maximum ejection angle for the secondary vorticity occurring at an incidence angle of 10°. Higher Reynolds number vortex rings resulted in more rapid destabilization of the flow. The three-dimensional DDPTV results showed an arc of secondary vorticity and secondary flow along the sides of the primary vortex ring as it collided with the boundary. Computation of the moments and products of kinetic energy and vorticity magnitude about the centroid of each vortex ring showed increasing asymmetry in the flow as the vortex interaction with the boundary evolved and more rapid dissipation of kinetic energy for higher incidence angles.  相似文献

Passive wake control behind a circular cylinder in uniform flow is studied by numerical simulation for ReD ranging from 80 to 300. Two small control cylinders, with diameter d/D=1/8, are placed at x/D=0.5 and y/D=±0.6. Unlike the 1990 results of Strykowski and Sreenivasan, in the present study, the vortex street behind the main cylinder still exists but the fluctuating lift and the form drag on the main cylinder reduces significantly and monotonously as the Reynolds number increases from 80 to 300. Obstruction of the control cylinders to the incoming flow deflects part of the fluid to pass through the gap between the main and control cylinders, forming two symmetric streams. These streams not only eliminate the flow separation along the rear surface of the main cylinder, they also merge toward the wake centerline to create an advancing momentum in the immediate near-wake region. These two effects significantly reduce the wake width behind the main cylinder and lead to monotonous decrease of the form drag as the Reynolds number increases. As the Reynolds number gets higher, a large amount of the downstream advancing momentum significantly delays the vortex formation farther downstream, leading to a more symmetric flow structure in the near-wake region of the main cylinder. As the Reynolds number increases from 80 to 300, both increasing symmetry of the flow structure in the near-wake and significant delay of the vortex formation are the main reasons for the fluctuating lift to decrease monotonously.  相似文献

The analytical solution of laminar free convective heat transfer in an unlimited space from an isothermal horizontal ring with an adiabatic plug is presented. The results of theoretical considerations are presented as relation of the Nusselt and Rayleigh numbers: $$Nu_D = 1.151 \cdot (Ra_D )^{1/5} \cdot \Phi (\phi _0 )$$ \] where Φ(φ0) is a function of shape coefficient of the ring (φ0=d/D). The solution presented has been verified experimentally with rings of constant external diameter (D=0.06 [m]) and various internal diameters (d=0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.04 and 0.05 [m]). The fluid tested was glycerin. The theoretical predictions agree well with the experimental results.  相似文献

The motion of a vortex ring generated by gradually varied flows through a thin-edged orifice has been investigated experimentally using particle image velocimetry. This flow reproduces the primary characteristics of many biological flows, such as cardiac flows through valves or jellyfish and squid propulsion. Even though vortex ring formation has been extensively studied, there is still interest in gradually varying inflows, i.e. the ones that are mostly found in previous conditions. The main purpose of this paper is to extend the time scaling already proposed in the literature to the entire cycle of vortex ring formation, pinch-off and free motion. To this end, eight inflow time laws have been tested, with different acceleration and deceleration phases. They have been selected in relation to practical applications by their resemblance to the main characteristics of cardiovascular and pulsed locomotion flows. Analysis of measured velocity and vorticity fields suggested a general criterion to establish the instant of vortex pinch-off directly from the imposed velocity program. This allows the proper scaling of the entire time evolution of the vortex ring for all tested inflows. Since it is quite easy to identify this instant experimentally, these results give a simple, practical rule for the computation of scales in vortex ring formation and development in the case of gradual inflows. The “slug model” has been used to test the proposed scaling and to obtain predictions for the vortex position, circulation and vorticity which are in agreement with experimental data.  相似文献

The vortex ring formation process of a starting buoyant plume was studied experimentally using digital particle image thermometry and velocimetry (DPITV). The vortex ring was observed to pinch-off, or become disconnected, from the trailing plume. Pinch-off occurred at non-dimensional times, or formation numbers, between 4.4 and 4.9. The observed pinch-off process is consistent with an explanation based upon the Kelvin–Benjamin variational principle. This is analogous to the pinch-off of a vortex ring generated using a piston–cylinder apparatus, suggesting that pinch-off is a general component of the vortex ring formation process for various generation mechanisms.  相似文献

This work aims at understanding the flow and heat transfer through a microcavity populated with micropins, representing a layer of a 3D integrated electronic chip stack with integrated cooling. The resulting vortex shedding behavior and its effect on the heat removal is analyzed in the Reynolds number (Re) range from 60 to 450. The lateral confinement, expressed as the ratio of diameter to lateral distance between two cylinders’ centers, is varied between 0.1 and 0.5; the longitudinal confinement (diameter to longitudinal distance between two cylinders’ centers) between 0.25 and 0.5; and vertical confinement (diameter to microcavity height ratio) between 0.1 and 0.5. For a single pin, as the lateral confinement is increased, the Strouhal number (St) and the shedding frequency increase by up to 100%. The thermal performance represented by the spatiotemporal averaged Nusselt number (Nu), based on the average pin surface and fluid temperatures, is also enhanced by over 30%. A direct relationship between Nu and the shedding frequency was found. For a row of pins, Nu in the vortex shedding regime was found to be up to 300% higher compared to the steady case. A decrease in the longitudinal confinement, tested with rows of pins (either with 50 or 25 pins) in the streamwise direction, led to an upstream migration of the vortex shedding location and in more homogeneous but higher wall temperatures. This coincided with a drastic reduction of pressure losses and a 30% Nu enhancement for the same pumping power. Finally, the vertical confinement is also investigated with 3D simulations around a single cylinder. With increasing Re and vertical confinement, the wake becomes strongly three-dimensional. For a given Re, the increase of vertical confinement naturally shows a suppression or even a complete elimination of the vortex shedding due to a strong end-wall effect. Our results shed light on the effects of confinement on vortex shedding and related heat transfer in the integrated cooling of 3D chip stacks.  相似文献

Round air jet development downstream from an abrupt contraction coupled to a uniform circular tube extension with length to diameter ratio L/D?=?1.2 and L/D?=?53.2 is studied experimentally. Smoke visualisation and systematic hot film velocity measurements are performed for low to moderate Reynolds numbers 1130?<?Re b ?<?11320. Mean and turbulent velocity profiles are quantified at the tube exit and along the centerline from the tube exit down to 20 times the diameter D. Flow development is seen to be determined by the underlying jet structure at the tube exit which depends on Reynolds number, initial velocity statistics at the tube exit and the presence/absence of coherent structures. It is shown that the tube extension ratio L/D as well as the sharp edged abrupt contraction influence the initial jet structure at the tube exit. For both L/D ratios, the presence of the abrupt contraction results in transitional jet flow in the range 2000?<?Re b ?<?4000 and in flow features associated with forced jets and high Reynolds numbers Re b ?>?104. The tube extension ratio L/D downstream from the abrupt contraction determines the shear layer roll up so that for L/D?=?1.2 flow visualisation suggests the occurrence of toroidal vortices for Re b ?<?4000 whereas helical vortices are associated with the transitional regime for L/D?=?53.2. Found flow features are compared to features reported in literature for smooth contraction nozzles and long pipe flow.  相似文献
