We study a gauge-invariant order parameter for deconfinement and the chiral condensate in SU(2) and SU(3) Yang–Mills theory in the vicinity of the deconfinement phase transition using the Landau gauge quark and gluon propagators. We determine the gluon propagator from lattice calculations and the quark propagator from its Dyson–Schwinger equation, using the gluon propagator as input. The critical temperature and a deconfinement order parameter are extracted from the gluon propagator and from the dependency of the quark propagator on the temporal boundary conditions. The chiral transition is determined using the quark condensate as order parameter. We investigate whether and how a difference in the chiral and deconfinement transition between SU(2) and SU(3) is manifest.

The question how the spin of the nucleon is distributed among its quark and gluon constituents is still a subject of intense investigations. Lattice QCD has progressed to provide information about spin fractions and orbital angular momentum contributions for up and down quarks in the proton, at a typical scale m2 \mu^{2}_{} ∼ 4 GeV2 . On the other hand, chiral quark models have traditionally been used for orientation at low momentum scales. In the comparison of such model calculations with experiment or lattice QCD, fixing the model scale and the treatment of scale evolution are essential. In this paper, we present a refined model calculation and a QCD evolution of lattice results up to next-to-next-to-leading order. We compare this approach with the Myhrer-Thomas scenario for resolving the proton spin puzzle.

We classify the parity- and time-reversal-violating operators involving quark and gluon fields that have effective dimension six: the quark electric dipole moment, the quark and gluon chromo-electric dipole moments, and four four-quark operators. We construct the effective chiral Lagrangian with hadronic and electromagnetic interactions that originate from them, which serves as the basis for calculations of low-energy observables. The form of the effective interactions depends on the chiral properties of these operators. We develop a power-counting scheme and calculate within this scheme, as an example, the parity- and time-reversal-violating pion–nucleon form factor. We also discuss the electric dipole moments of the nucleon and light nuclei.

In Landau gauge QCD the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion and its relations to the infrared behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators are reviewed. It is demonstrated that the realization of this confinement criterion (which is closely related to the Gribov-Zwanziger horizon condition) results from quite general properties of the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation. The numerical solutions for the gluon and ghost propagators obtained from a truncated set of Dyson-Schwinger equations provide an explicit example for the anticipated infrared behaviour. The results are in good agreement, also quantitatively, with corresponding lattice data obtained recently. The resulting running coupling approaches a fixed point in the infrared, (0) = 8.915/Nc. Solutions for the coupled system of Dyson-Schwinger equations for the quark, gluon and ghost propagators are presented. Dynamical generation of quark masses and thus spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry takes place. In the quenched approximation the quark propagator functions agree well with those of corresponding lattice calculations. For a small number of light flavours the quark, gluon and ghost propagators deviate only slightly from the ones in quenched approximation. While the positivity violation of the gluon spectral function is manifest in the gluon propagator, there are no clear indications of analogous positivity violations for quarks so far.

Masses of the pseudoscalar and vector mesons are calculated within the generalized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model taking into account homogeneous vacuum gluon field. This vacuum provides an analytical quark confinement. Colorless modes are determined by the confined gluons and are described by the nonlocal quark currents with appropriate radial and angular quantum numbers. An interaction of the quark spin with the vacuum gluon field arises naturally within the model under consideration. It is shown that this spin-field interaction leads to mass splitting between vector and pseudoscalar mesons with identical quark structure (ρ-π,K-K * and so on). This allows to use the four-fermion coupling constant being common for both nonets.

Based on the global color symmetry model (GCM), a method for obtaining the quark loop effects on the dressed gluon propagator in GCM is developed. In the chiral limit, it is found that the dressed gluon propagator containing the quark loop effects in the Nambu-Goldstone and Wigner phases are quite different. In solving the quark self-energy functions in the two different phases and subsequent study of bag constant one should use the above dressed gluon propagator as input. The above approach for obtaining the current quark mass effects on the dressed gluon propagator is quite general and can also be used to calculate the chemical potential dependence of the dressed gluon propagator.

With the help of the Ward-Takahashi identities associated with a specific non linear chiral transformation of the quark fields we show, in the framework of massless QCD, that in addition to scale invariance breaking gluon condensation implies dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, that is to say the appearance of a non vanishing quark condensate. Moreover the dynamically generated quark mass is directly connected to the quark and gluon condensates.

We analyze the status of numerical simulation of QCD at finite temperature. Emphasis is put on quantitative predictions emerging from lattice calculations that may be tested in heavy ion experiments. Recent results on the chiral phase transition, thermodynamics of the quark gluon plasma phase and various screening lengths are discussed.

Investigation of the splitting of quark and gluon jets
The splitting processes in identified quark and gluon jets are investigated using longitudinal and transverse observables. The jets are selected from symmetric three-jet events measured in Z decays with the Delphi detector in 1991-1994. Gluon jets are identified using heavy quark anti-tagging. Scaling violations in identified gluon jets are observed for the first time. The scale energy dependence of the gluon fragmentation function is found to be about two times larger than for the corresponding quark jets, consistent with the QCD expectation . The primary splitting of gluons and quarks into subjets agrees with fragmentation models and, for specific regions of the jet resolution , with NLLA calculations. The maximum of the ratio of the primary subjet splittings in quark and gluon jets is . Due to non-perturbative effects, the data are below the expectation at small . The transition from the perturbative to the non-perturbative domain appears at smaller for quark jets than for gluon jets. Combined with the observed behaviour of the higher rank splittings, this explains the relatively small multiplicity ratio between gluon and quark jets. It is unavoidable to deal with the quark and gluon momentum and angular momentum contributions to the nucleon momentum and spin in the study of nucleon internal structure. However we never have the quark and gluon momentum, orbital angular momentum and gluon spin operators which satisfy both the gauge invariance and the canonical momentum and angular momentum commutation relation. The conflicts between the gauge invariance and canonical quantization requirement of these operators are discussed. A new set of quark and gluon momentum, orbital angular momentum and spin operators, which satisfy both the gauge invariance and canonical momentum and angular momentum commutation relation, are proposed. The key point to achieve such a proper decomposition is to separate the gauge field into the pure gauge and the gauge covariant parts. The same conflicts also exist in QED and quantum mechanics and have been solved in the same manner. The impacts of this new decomposition to the nucleon internal structure are discussed.

The form of the quantum chromodynamic Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation modified by the nonperturbative kernel associated with the gluon condensate is obtained. It is shown that the eolution for the renormalisation group invariant quark condensate from the SD equation is in agreement with that obtained from the consistent equation for quark condensate when the leading behavior of the dynamical quark mass is concerned[1]. It is also found that the gluon condensate kernel makes the critical coupling constant above which the chiral symmetry breaks smaller and increases the value of the quark condensate.

We do a numerical calculation on the quark-loop effects on the dressed gluon propagator in the chiral limit. It is found that the quark-loop effects on the dressed gluon propagator are significant in solving the quark propagator in the rainbow approximation of the Dyson-Schwinger equation. The approach we used here is quite general and can also be used to calculate both the chemical potential and current quark mass dependence of the dressed gluon propagator.

We consider here chiral symmetry breaking in quantum chromodynamics arising from gluon condensates in vacuum. Through coherent states of gluons simulating a mean field type of approximation, we show that the off-shell gluon condensates of vacuum generate a mass-like contribution for the quarks, giving rise to chiral symmetry breaking. We next note that spontaneous breaking of global chiral symmetry links the four component quark field operator to the pion wave function. This in turn yields many hadronic properties in the light quark sector in agreement with experiments, leading to the conclusion that low energy hadron properties are primarily driven by the vacuum structure of quantum chromodynamics.

How do the quark and gluon share the nucleon momentum? How does the nucleon spin distribute among its constituents? What means the quark and gluon momentum, spin and orbital angular momentum? These problems are analyzed and a solution is proposed based on gauge invariance principle, canonical quantization rule and Poincaré covariance.

In the framework of resonating group method, we investigate the structure of the sixquark systems with strangeness s = -3 under the chiral SU(3) quark model. The calculations for single NΩ channel with spin S = 2 and the single △Ω channel with spin S = 3 are considered. The results show that both the systems can form loosely bound states where the forces induced by chiral fields play very important role.

The Spin dependent gluon and sea quark distributions of the proton and the neutron are extracted in the leading order (LO) and the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD. The relativistic quark exchange model is used to calculate the related valence quark spin dependent structure function. The inverse Mellin transform technique is performed to evaluate the polarized x-dependent distributions of the gluon and the sea quark from the various moments of the valence quarks. It is shown that the calculated spin structure functions (SSF) of the proton and the neutron are in good agreement with the available data, such as E143, SMC, E142, E154 and Hermes experiments. A comparison is also made with the other theoretical models. Finally it is shown that the above calculated parton distributions improve the SSF of the proton and the neutron. In this paper we discuss the binding energy of the H-particle using a chiral quark model, where pion exchange plays an important role to reproduce the mass difference between the nucleon and Δ resonance. Since the main source for the bound H-particle is believed to be the color magnetic interaction, which gives the nucleon and Δ mass difference, it is very interesting to investigate whether the chiral quark model gives rise to the bound H-particle or not. We employ an extended resonating group method in order to take into account the possibility of a change of baryon wave functions when two baryons interact with each other. We found that a change of baryon size together with the Hamiltonian which consists of gluon, pseudoscalar meson and sigma meson exchange potentials gives rise to the bound H-particle. The binding energy is found to be about 25 MeV in a hybrid chiral quark model. Differences between the ordinary gluon dominant model and chiral quark models are also investigated. It is found that a pure chiral model has no bound state when the widely used sigma-quark coupling strength is employed.

The prevailing theoretical quark and gluon momentum, orbital angular momentum and spin operators, satisfy either gauge invariance or the corresponding canonical commutation relation, but one never has these operators which satisfy both except the quark spin.
