We prove that the norm of the Euler class E{\mathcal {E}} for flat vector bundles is 2n (in even dimension n, since it vanishes in odd dimension). This shows that the Sullivan–Smillie bound considered by Gromov and Ivanov–Turaev is sharp. In the course of the proof, we construct a new cocycle representing E{\mathcal {E}} and taking only the two values ±2n . Furthermore, we establish the uniqueness of a canonical bounded Euler class.  相似文献

We show that there exists a family of smooth orientable circle bundles over closed orientable 3-manifolds each of which has a codimension-one foliation transverse to the fibres of class C 0 but has none of class C 3 . There arises a necessary condition induced from the Milnor-Wood inequality for the existence of a foliation transverse to the fibres of an orientable circle bundle over a closed orientable 3-manifold. We show that with some exceptions this necessary condition is also sufficient for the existence of a smooth transverse foliation if the base space is a closed Seifert fibred manifold. We study an invariant of a 3-manifold which consists of Reidemeister torsion for linear representations which pass through a finite group. We show a Dehn surgery formula on this invariant and compute that of a Seifert manifold over S2. As a consequence we obtain a necessary condition for a result of Dehn surgery along a knot to be Seifert fibered, which can be applied even in a case where abelian Reidemeister torsion gives no information.  相似文献

We study moduli of vector bundles on a two-dimensional neighbourhood Z k of an irreducible curve ? ? ?1 with ?2 = ?k and give an explicit construction of their moduli stacks. For the case of instanton bundles, we stratify the stacks and construct moduli spaces. We give sharp bounds for the local holomorphic Euler characteristic of bundles on Z k and prove existence of families of bundles with prescribed numerical invariants. Our numerical calculations are performed using a Macaulay 2 algorithm, which is available for download at http://www.maths.ed.ac.uk/~s0571100/Instanton/.  相似文献

In the mid 1970s, Hartshorne conjectured that, for all n > 7, any rank 2 vector bundles on ? n is a direct sum of line bundles. This conjecture remains still open. In this paper, we construct indecomposable rank two vector bundles on a large class of Fano toric varieties. Unfortunately, this class does not contain ? n .  相似文献

We study cobordisms and cobordisms rel boundary of PL locally-flat disk knots D n−2D n . Any two disk knots are cobordant if the cobordisms are not required to fix the boundary sphere knots, and any two even-dimensional disk knots with isotopic boundary knots are cobordant rel boundary. However, the cobordism rel boundary theory of odd-dimensional disk knots is more subtle. Generalizing results of J. Levine on the cobordism of sphere knots, we define disk knot Seifert matrices and show that two higher-dimensional disk knots with isotopic boundaries are cobordant rel boundary if and only if their disk knot Seifert matrices are algebraically cobordant. We also ask which algebraic cobordism classes can be realized given a fixed boundary knot and provide a complete classification when the boundary knot has no 2-torsion in its middle-dimensional Alexander module. In the course of this classification, we establish a close connection between the Blanchfield pairing of a disk knot and the Farber-Levine torsion pairing of its boundary knot (in fact, for disk knots satisfying certain connectivity assumptions, the disk knot Blanchfield pairing will determine the boundary Farber-Levine pairing). In addition, we study the dependence of disk knot Seifert matrices on choices of Seifert surface, demonstrating that all such Seifert matrices are rationally S-equivalent, but not necessarily integrally S-equivalent.  相似文献

In a very general setting, we show that a 3-manifold obtained as the orbit space of the basin of a topological attractor is either S2×S1 or irreducible. We then study in more detail the topology of a class of 3-manifolds which are also orbit spaces and arise as invariants of gradient-like diffeomorphisms (in dimension 3). Up to a finite number of exceptions, which we explicitly describe, all these manifolds are Haken and, by changing the diffeomorphism by a finite power, all the Seifert components of the Jaco-Shalen-Johannson decomposition of these manifolds are made into product circle bundles.  相似文献

We study the class ofn-Riemannian manifolds in the title such that the torsion elements in the fundamental group have a definite bound on their orders. Our main result asserts the existence of a kind of generalized Seifert fiber structure onM n , for which the fundamental group of fibers injects into that ofM n . This provides a necessary and sufficient topological condition for a manifold to admit a sufficiently collapsed metric in our class. Among other consequences we obtain a strengthened version of the gap conjecture in this context. The work of the first author is partially supported by NSF Grant DMS 9303999. We introduce the notion of a local torus action modeled on the standard representation (for simplicity, we call it a local torus action). It is a generalization of a locally standard torus action and also an underlying structure of a locally toric Lagrangian fibration. For a local torus action, we define two invariants called a characteristic pair and an Euler class of the orbit map, and prove that local torus actions are classified topologically by them. As a corollary, we obtain a topological classification of locally standard torus actions, which includes the topological classifications of quasi-toric manifolds by Davis and Januszkiewicz and of effective T2-actions on four-dimensional manifolds without nontrivial finite stabilizers by Orlik and Raymond. We discuss locally toric Lagrangian fibrations from the viewpoint of local torus actions. We also investigate the topology of a manifold equipped with a local torus action when the Euler class of the orbit map vanishes.  相似文献

We define an S1-Euler characteristic, S 1(X), of a circle action on a compact manifold or finite complex X. It lies in the first Hochschild homology group HH 1(G) where G is the fundamental group of X. This S 1(X) is analogous in many ways to the ordinary Euler characteristic. One application is an intuitively satisfying formula for the Euler class (integer coefficients) of the normal bundle to a smooth circle action without fixed points on a manifold. In the special case of a three-dimensional Seifert fibered space, this formula is particularly effective.  相似文献

Given an analytic function germ f: (X, 0) → C on an isolated determinantal singularity or on a reduced curve, we present formulas relating the local Euler obstruction of f to the vanishing Euler characteristic of the fiber Xf-1(0) and to the Milnor number of f. Restricting ourselves to the case where X is a complete intersection, we obtain an easy way to calculate the local Euler obstruction of f as the difference between the dimension of two algebras.  相似文献

There is an extensive literature on the characterization of knots in the 3-sphere which have the same 3-manifold as a common n-fold cyclic branched covering, for some integer . In the present paper, we study the following more general situation. Given two integers m and n, how are knots K 1 and K 2 related such that the m-fold cyclic branched covering of K 1 coincides with the n-fold cyclic branched covering of K 2. Or, seen from the point of view of 3-manifolds: in how many different ways can a given 3-manifold occur as a cyclic branched covering of knots in S 3. Under certain hypotheses, we solve this problem for the basic class of hyperbolic 3-manifolds and hyperbolic knots (the other basic class is that of Seifert fiber spaces resp. of torus and Montesinos knots for which the situation is well understood; the general case can then be analyzed using the equivariant sphere and torus decomposition into Seifert fiber spaces and hyperbolic manifolds). In this article, we investigate interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (IPDG) methods for solving a class of two‐dimensional nonlinear parabolic equations. For semi‐discrete IPDG schemes on a quasi‐uniform family of meshes, we obtain a priori bounds on solutions measured in the L2 norm and in the broken Sobolev norm. The fully discrete IPDG schemes considered are based on the approximation by forward Euler difference in time and broken Sobolev space. Under a restriction related to the mesh size and time step, an hp ‐version of an a priori l(L2) and l2(H1) error estimate is derived and numerical experiments are presented.© 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper we prove nonexistence of stationary weak solutions to the Euler–Poisson equations and the Navier–Stokes–Poisson equations in ? N , N ≥ 2, under suitable assumptions of integrability for the density, velocity and the potential of the force field. For the time dependent Euler–Poisson equations we prove nonexistence result assuming additionally temporal asymptotic behavior near infinity of the second moment of density. For a class of time dependent Navier–Stokes–Poisson equations in ? N this asymptotic behavior of the density can be proved if we assume the standard energy inequality, and therefore the nonexistence of global weak solution follows from more plausible assumption in this case.  相似文献

We call a pair (K,m) of a knot K in the 3-sphere S3 and an integer m a Seifert fibered surgery if m-surgery on K yields a Seifert fiber space. For most known Seifert fibered surgeries (K,m), K can be embedded in a genus 2 Heegaard surface of S3 in a primitive/Seifert position, the concept introduced by Dean as a natural extension of primitive/primitive position defined by Berge. Recently Guntel has given an infinite family of Seifert fibered surgeries each of which has distinct primitive/Seifert positions. In this paper we give yet other infinite families of Seifert fibered surgeries with distinct primitive/Seifert positions from a different point of view.  相似文献

In the paper, we consider a multi-dimensional bipolar hydrodynamic model from semiconductor devices and plasmas. This system takes the form of Euler–Poisson with electric field and frictional damping added to the momentum equations. By making a new analysis on Green’s functions for the Euler system with damping and the Euler–Poisson system with damping, we obtain the pointwise estimates of the solution for the multi-dimensions bipolar Euler–Poisson system. As a by-product, we extend decay rates of the densities \({\rho_i(i=1,2)}\) in the usual L2-norm to the Lp-norm with \({p\geq1}\) and the time-decay rates of the momentums mi(i = 1,2) in the L2-norm to the Lp-norm with p > 1 and all of the decay rates here are optimal.  相似文献

In this article, we study the dissipativity of the linearly implicit Euler scheme for the 2D Navier‐Stokes equations with time delay volume forces (NSD). This scheme can be viewed as an application of the implicit Euler scheme to linearized NSD. Therefore, only a linear system is needed to solve at each time step. The main results we obtain are that this scheme is L2 dissipative for any time step size and H1 dissipative under a time‐step constraint. As a consequence, the existence of a numerical attractor of the discrete dynamical system is established. A by‐product of the dissipativity analysis of the linearly implicit Euler scheme for NSD is that the dissipativity of an implicit‐explicit scheme for the celebrated Navier‐Stokes equations that treats the volume forces term explicitly is obtained.© 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In [8] counting complexity classes #PR and #PC in the Blum-Shub-Smale (BSS) setting of computations over the real and complex numbers, respectively, were introduced. One of the main results of [8] is that the problem to compute the Euler characteristic of a semialgebraic set is complete in the class FPR#PR. In this paper, we prove that the corresponding result is true over C, namely that the computation of the Euler characteristic of an affine or projective complex variety is complete in the class FPC#PC. We also obtain a corresponding completeness result for the Turing model.  相似文献

Summary In this paper we give a classification theorem of genus two Heegaard splittings of Seifert fibered manifolds overS 2 with three exceptional fibers, except for when two of the exceptional fibers hava the same invariants with opposite orientation.  相似文献
