A series of new calamitic liquid crystals, 6-methoxy-2-(4-alkanoyloxybenzylidenamino)benzothiazoles, comprising a benzothiazole core, terminal methoxy group and a Schiff base linkage were synthesised and characterised. This series comprises 12 members wherein members differ by the length of the alkanoyloxy chain (C n-1H2n-1COO-, where n?=?2–8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18). Their mesomorphic properties were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarising microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. The short chain derivatives (n?=?2 and 3) were non-mesogenic compounds, while an enantiotropic nematic phase was present throughout the remaining members of the series. The smectic C phase emerged from the decanoyloxy derivative onwards.  相似文献

A series of new calamitic liquid crystals, 4-{[(pyridin-4-yl)methylidene]amino}phenyl 4-alkoxybenzoates comprising a heterocyclic (pyridine) and two phenyl rings core system, terminal alkoxy chain, imine and ester linkers were synthesised and characterised. This series consists of nine members wherein the members differ by the length of alkoxy chain (CnH2n+1O–, where n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18). Spectral analysis results were in accordance with the expected structure. Their thermotropic behaviours were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarising microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. A single mesophase (nematic) was observed for the first three members of the series (n = 2, 4 and 6). As the alkoxy chain increased to n = 8 and n = 10, the nematic phase appeared together with an additional smectic A (SmA) phase. When moving from n = 12 until the highest members (n = 18), the nematic phase disappeared and these compounds only exhibited a single mesophase (SmA).  相似文献

A series of bis[4-(n-alkoxy)-N-(4′-R-phenyl)salicylideneiminato]oxovanadium(IV) complexes (n?=?6,?10,?14,?16,?18 and R?=?C3H7) were prepared and their mesogenic properties were investigated. The mesomorphic behaviors of the compounds were studied by polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Ligands display SmA/SmC and unexpected nematic mesophases. The complexes bearing longer alkoxy carbon chain (n?=?10,?14,?16, and 18) showed both monotropic or enantiotropic transitions with smectic A and high ordered smectic E phases. However, the complex with shorter carbon chain length (n?=?6) showed monotropic transition with an unprecedented nematic (N) phase. A density functional theory study was carried out using DMol3 at BLYP/DNP level to obtain a stable optimized structure. A square-pyramidal geometry for the vanadyl complexes has been suggested. A νV=O stretching value of ~970?cm?1 corroborated absence of any V?=?O?···?V?=?O interactions. Cyclic voltammetry revealed a quasireversible one-electron response at 0.61?V for the VO(IV)–VO(V) redox couple. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of the vanadyl complexes suggested absence of any exchange interactions among the vanadyl spin centers.  相似文献

A new series of symmetrical S-shaped oligomers 4,4?-bis(ω-2-(ω-[(bromophenyl)diazenyl]-alkoxy)phenoxy)hexylbiphenyl consisting of two different spacers (inner -(CH2)6- and outer -(CH2)n-) have been synthesised. Their physical, thermal and texture observation over various transition temperatures are reported. The outer spacers for these compounds vary from n = 4 to n = 9. The oligomers with even number of members exhibit monotropic phase in which the compound with n = 4 shows nematic (N) phase whilst those with members n = 6 and 8 exhibit N and smectic A (SmA) phases. However, the homologs with odd number of members display enantiotropic phase in which the compound with n = 5 exhibits N and smectic phases whereas the members with n = 7 and 9 are predominantly smectogenic. The temperature range of N phase for even-numbered member decreased with elongation of the outer spacer. The smectic phase stability among the members in the present series increases when the outer spacer n is increased from 5 to 8.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterisation of a series of new rod-shaped liquid crystal (LC), 2-(4-alkyloxybenzylidenamino)benzothiazoles possessing even number of carbon atoms at the alkyloxy chain (CnH2n?+?1O-, n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18) are reported. The molecular structures of title compounds were elucidated using FTIR and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. The phase behaviour of these new compounds was characterised and studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarising optical microscopy. Lower members (n = 2, 4 and 6) did not exhibit mesophase. Octyloxy derivative was monotropic LC. Enantiotropic smectic A phase was observed from n-decyloxy derivatives onward to the last homologous synthesised.  相似文献

Results of the dielectric studies of nine members of the nBT (4-n-alkyl-4'-thiocyanatobiphenyl, n= 2-10) homologous series in the crystal E (E) and isotropic (I) phases are presented. The dependence of the static permittivity ?s in the isotropic phase, the longitudinal relaxation times τis and τ, and the activation enthalpies ΔH is and ΔH on the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain n are analysed. A considerable increase in the retardation factor g= τis with decreasing n is observed. The results are compared with those obtained for similar two-ring homologous series. The parameters characterizing the molecular rotations around the short axis in the E phase (τ and ΔH ) indicate a hardening of this solid-like phase with shortening of the alkyl chain.  相似文献

A new series of Schiff base calamitic liquid crystal; methyl 4-(4′-n-alkoxybenzylideneamino)benzoate (MABAB), H2n+1C n OC6H4C(H)=NC6H4COOCH3 (n = 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16) has been synthesised and characterised by elemental analyses, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 1H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The mesomorphic properties of these compounds were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarising optical microscopy (POM). All members of the series exhibit enantiotropic smectic A (SmA) mesophase. Temperature-dependent micro-Raman study of one of the members, MABAB-10 has been employed to identify phase transitions and the molecular rearrangement therein. Analysis of Raman marker bands; C–H in-plane bending, C–C stretching of phenyl rings and –C(H)=N– linking group of core confirms the transitions clearly as observed through DSC and POM. An in situ Raman measurement of C–H in-plane bending mode has also been performed to visualise the molecular changes more clearly. The Raman study gives an evidence of induced co-planarity of rings at Cr→SmA phase transition. The density functional theoretical (DFT) optimisation of monomer, dimer and rotational conformer of MABAB-10 also support the induced co-planarity at Cr→SmA phase transition.  相似文献

A series of half-discoid [N2O2]-donor tetradentate alkoxy substituted salicylaldimine ligands, [N,N′-di- (4-n-alkoxysalicylidene)-4-Cl-l,2-diamino-benzene] (L; n?=?12, 14, 16 and 18) have been prepared. The reaction of the ‘salphen’-type Schiff base ligand with Zn(OAc)2.4H2O afforded a series of mononuclear zinc(II) complexes. The ligands and the corresponding zinc(II) complexes were characterised by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Although the ligands are non-mesogenic, columnar mesomorphism is induced upon complexation with the metal. The p2gg symmetry of the rectangular columnar phase is confirmed by variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction study. Two ‘half-disc’-shaped molecules with four alkoxy legs are presumed to self-assemble via a dimeric interaction filling the space. In contrast to the ligands, the zinc(II) complexes all exhibited moderately intense green emission at room temperature both in solution and in the solid state. Density functional theory calculation, carried out using a DMol3 program, revealed a distorted square planar geometry for the complexes. The mesomorphic and photoluminescence property of the zinc complexes are collated as a function of spacer substituent, as well as alkoxy carbon chain length.  相似文献

In this paper, we present the synthesis and characterisation of two new mesogenic homologous series, β-chloroethyl 4-(4′-n-alkoxyphenylazo) benzoates (I) and the β-chloroethyl [4-(4′-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy)phenylazo]-4”-benzoates (II), containing a terminal β-chloro ethyl chain. Series I was synthesised by alkylation of β-chloroethyl 4-(4′-hydroxy phenylazo) benzoate with an appropriate alkyl halide, whereas series II was synthesised by esterification of β-chloroethyl 4-(4′-hydroxyphenylazo) benzoate with an appropriate 4-n-alkoxybenzoic acid. The molecular structures of these new compounds of both the series were characterised by combination of element analysis and a standard spectroscopic method. The mesomorphic behaviour was studied mainly by use of a polarised microscope and, in some cases, differential scanning calorimeter as well. In series I, all nine members synthesised exhibited only an enantiotropic smectic A mesophase. In series II, all 12 homologues exhibited an enantiotropic nematic mesophase; a smectic A phase appeared in the n-octyloxy derivative as an enantiotropic phase and persisted through to the n-hexadecyloxy member. The mesomorphic properties of both series were compared with each other and also with the properties of other structurally related series to evaluate the effects of the β-chloroethyl tail on mesomorphism.  相似文献

A series of trifluoro-substituted benzoate derivatives: (S)-1-ethylheptyl 4-[4-(4-alkyloxy-3- fluorobenzoyloxy)-3-fluorobenzoyloxy]-2-fluorobenzoates is reported. The short chain members (n = 8 to n = 11) display a direct SmC*A-SmA transition, whereas for longer chains a SmC* phase appears, but no ferrielectric phases are present, and a direct SmCA*-SmC* transition is obtained. The mesomorphic properties were studied by optical microscopy and DSC, and by electro-optical, helical pitch and optical rotatory power measurements. The effect of the number and position of the fluoro substituents, and the influence of the chiral moiety on the mesomorphic behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

Binuclear ruthenium(III) complexes [RuX3L]2?·?nH2O (X?=?Cl, L?=?L1, L2, L3; n?=?1, L4 and L5, X?=?Br; L?=?L3), [RuX3L1.5]2?·?nH2O (X?=?Br, L?=?L1; n?=?0, L4; n?=?6 and L5; n?=?10), and [RuX3L2]2 (X?=?Br, L?=?L2) have been isolated by treatment of hydrated RuX3 (X?=?Cl/Br) in acetone with 2-(2′-aminophenylbenzimidazole) (L1), 2-(3′-aminophenylbenzimidazole) (L2), 2-[(3′-N-salicylidinephenyl)benzimidazole] (L3), 2-(3′-pyridylbenzimidazole) (L4), and 2-(4′-pyridylbenzimidazole) (L5) in acetone. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, IR, electronic, EPR, and mass spectral studies. The complexes were dimeric; based on analytical and spectral studies, an octahedral geometry was proposed for the complexes. The synthesized complexes were screened against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and fungi.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterisation of two series of cyanobiphenyl-based liquid crystal dimers containing sulfur links between the spacer and mesogenic units, the 4?-[1,ω-alkanediylbis(thio)]bis-[1,1?-biphenyl]-4-carbonitriles (CBSnSCB), and 4?-({ω-[(4?-cyano[1,1?-biphenyl]-4-yl)oxy]alkyl}thio)[1,1?-biphenyl]-4-carbonitriles (CBSnOCB) are described. The odd members of both series show twist-bend nematic and nematic phases, whereas the even members exhibit only the nematic phase. An analogous cyanoterphenyl-based dimer, 34-{6-[(4?-cyano[1,1?-biphenyl]-4-yl)thio]-hexyl}[11,21:24,31-terphenyl]-14-carbonitrile (CT6SCB), is also reported and shows enantiotropic NTB and N phases. The transitional properties of these dimers are discussed in terms of molecular curvature, flexibility and biaxiality. The same molecular factors also influence the birefringence of nematic phases. Resonant X-ray scattering studies of the twist-bend nematic phase at both the carbon and sulfur absorption edges were performed, which allowed for the determination of critical behaviour of the helical pitch at the transition to the nematic phase, the behaviour was found to be independent of molecular structure. It was also observed that despite the different molecular bending angle and flexibility, in all compounds the helical pitch length far from the N-NTB transition corresponds to 4 longitudinal molecular distances.  相似文献

Two new mesogenic homologous series containing 6-methoxybenzothiazole ring at the terminus of the molecule, viz. 2-(4′-n-alkoxyphenylazo)-6-methoxybenzothiazoles and 2-[4′-(4″-n-alkoxy-benzoyloxy) phenylazo]-6-methoxybenzothiazoles were synthesized. In series I,n-butyloxy to n-tetradecyloxy derivatives exhibit nematic mesophase. Smectic A mesophase commences from then-dodecyl-oxy derivative as a monotropic phase and is retained up to the last member synthesized. All the members of series II exhibit enantiotropic nematic mesophase. The mesomorphic properties of the present series are compared with other structurally related series to evaluate the effect of the benzothiazole ring and the methoxy substituent on mesomorphism. A series of 3‐(3‐hydroxyphenyl)‐4‐alkyl‐3,4‐dihydrobenzo[e][1,3]oxazepine‐1,5‐dione compounds with general formula CnH2n+1CNO(CO)2C6H4(C6H4OH) in which n are even parity numbers from 2 to 18. The structure determinations on these compounds were performed by FT‐IR spectroscopy which indicated that the terminal alkyl chain attached to the oxazepine ring was fully extended. Conformational analysis in DMSO at ambient temperature was carried out for the first time via high resolution 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy.  相似文献

A new series of ionic liquid crystals (ILCs), 1-(4-(4-nitrophenylazo)phenyloxy) vinyl-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium bromide salts (C n , n?=?6, 10) were synthesised. Their chemical structures were determined by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, UV spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The liquid crystalline properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. These measurements showed that C n (n?=?6, 10) exhibit smectic liquid crystalline phases with focal-conic fan-shaped textures. The introduction of vinylimidazolium group onto the azobenzene enhances the thermal stability of the smectic state, which play an important role in forming the smectic layer structure.  相似文献

New mesogenic homologous series bearing 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring with a nitro terminal group, 4-(5-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)phenyl 4-((4-methoxybenzylidene)amino)benzoate (G1–G11), were synthesised. Their chemical structures are identified by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and elemental analysis. The liquid crystalline properties of the series Gn and their precursory Fn were screened by differential scanning calorimetry and optical polarising microscopy (OPM). The compounds of the series Gn were screened by thermogravimetric analysis to observe their thermal stability. The target compounds (Gn) in this study, were displayed different liquid crystalline mesophase, the first two homologous (G1 and G2) did not show any liquid crystalline behaviour, the homologous (G3–G10) which have an alkoxy terminal group (n = 3–10) exhibited nematic phase, whilst the last derivative of the series (G11), n = 12, displayed SmA phase. The mesomorphic properties of these derivatives were affected by the presence of the nitro group at the end of the molecules which was classified as a strong polar group. Also, the role of alkoxy terminal chain and the bent heterocyclic ring (1,3,4-oxadiazole) in the liquid crystalline properties of these molecules were debated.  相似文献

The coordination of organochalcogen (especially Se and Te) substituted Schiff-bases L1H, L2H, L3H, and L4H toward Zn(II) and Hg(II) has been studied. Reactions of these ligands with ZnCl2 in 1?:?1 molar ratio gave binuclear complexes [{2-[PhX(CH2) n N?=?C(Ph)]-6-[PhCO]-4-MeC6H2O}2Zn2Cl2] (where X?=?Se, n?=?2 (1); X?=?Se, n?=?3 (2); X?=?Te, n?=?2 (3); and X?=?Te, n?=?3 (4)) with partial hydrolytic cleavage of proligands. In these complexes, two partially hydrolyzed ligand fragments coordinate tridentate (NOO) with two Zn's. Reaction of HgBr2 with L1H and L2H in 1?:?1 molar ratio gave monometallic complexes [C6H2(4-Me)(OH)[2,6-{C(Ph)?=?N(CH2) n Se(Ph)}2HgBr2]] (n?=?2 (5) or 3 (6)) and under similar conditions with L3H and L4H gave bimetallic complexes [C6H2(4-Me)(OH)[2,6-{C(Ph)?=?N(CH2) n Te(Ph)}2Hg2Br4]] (n?=?2?(7) or 3 (8)) in which the ligands coordinate with metal through selenium or tellurium, leaving the imino nitrogen and phenolic oxygen uncoordinated. The proligands L1H, L2H give 14- or 16-membered metallamacrocycles through Se–Hg–Se linkages and L3H, L4H give 16- or 18-membered metallamacrocycles through Te–Hg–Br–Hg–Te linkages. All the complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, ESIMS, FTIR, multinuclear NMR, UV-Vis, and conductance measurements. The redox properties of the complexes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). Complexes 14 exhibited ligand-centered irreversible oxidation processes. Complexes 5 and 6 showed metal-centered quasi-reversible single electron transfer, whereas dinuclear complexes 7 and 8 displayed two quasi-reversible, one-electron transfer steps. A single-crystal X-ray structure determination of 1 showed that the coordination unit is centrosymmetric with Zn(II) in square-pyramidal coordination geometry and the two square pyramids sharing an edge. The Zn?···?Zn separation is 3.232?Å. The DNA-binding properties of 1 and 3 with calf thymus DNA were explored by a spectrophotometric method and CV.  相似文献

A new oxide phase La1.5Sr1.5 Mn1.25Ni0.75O6.67 ± 0.05, a member of the An + 1 BnO3n+1(n=2) Rad-dlesden—Popper homologue series, was synthesized, and its structure and magnetic properties characterized. Magnetic anomalies associated with the competition between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic orders are observed in the range of the temperatures studied (2-400 K). The ESR spectra of the compound feature the constriction of a magnetic signal and a shift toward g(Mn4+).  相似文献

A homologous series of new chiral liquid crystal compounds, M6BnB (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18), with varying length of n-alkoxy chains at one end, was formed by covalently linking a chiral (?)-menthyl with biphenyl-benzoate via adipoyloxy spacer group. A combination of analysis methods such as Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR spectra, differential scanning calorimetry, polarised optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction was carried out to systematically investigate their phase structures and phase transition behaviours. The length of the flexible terminal alkoxy group has a profound influence on the clearing points (Tiso) and Tiso decrease with the increase of alkoxy chain (n). In addition, increasing the length of the terminal alkoxy group tends to narrow the temperature range of the N* phase and favour the development of chiral smectic C phase.  相似文献

Abstract

Mesomorphic phase transitions of 4′-n-alkoxy-3′-nitrobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acids (ANBC) with numbers of carbons (n) in the alkoxy group ranging from 11 to 22 have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy. The D phase, a mesophase of particular interest through its being optically isotropic, was observed for the n = 17, 19, 20, 21, and 22 members of the ANBCs, as well as for the n = 16 and 18 members, as reported previously. The Sc-D phase transition temperature decreased with increasing n, so that the temperature range of the D phase extended over 64° at n = 22. In the n = 15 member, the D phase was certainly observed on first heating, but was not seen on subsequent cooling and second heating processes.  相似文献
