Thermotropic ionic liquid crystals (LCs) are useful for a number of applications such as anisotropic ion transport and as organised reaction media/solvents because of their ordered fluid properties and intrinsic charge units. A large number of different ionic LC architectures are known, but only a handful of examples of gemini (i.e. paired or dimeric) ionic LCs have been prepared and studied. In this work, a series of 20 new symmetric, imidazolium-based, gemini cationic LCs containing two bridged imidazolium cations and two pendant alkyl chains was synthesised, and the thermotropic LC behaviours were characterised. The imidazolium unit provides a highly tunable and modular platform for the design and synthesis of gemini cationic LCs which offers excellent structure control. As expected, the thermotropic LC properties of these new amphilphilic, gemini ionic LCs were found to be strongly influenced by the length of the spacer between the imidazolium units, the length of the pendant alkyl tails, and the nature of the anion. Smectic A (SmA) thermotropic LC phases were observed in more than half of the gemini imidazolium LC systems studied.  相似文献

In order to demonstrate the important smectic power of the ionic functions present in mesogenic molecules, a series of N-alkylpyridinium bromides ω-substituted with (4-cyanobiphenylyl)oxy or [4-(2-methyl-1-butoxy)biphenylyl]oxy mesogenic group and their analogous 4-vinylpyridinium polymers were synthesized and characterized. The liquid crystalline behavior was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Smectic mesophases, namely A, B, and E, were identified for the low molecular weight compounds, whereas smectic A and E mesophases were identified for the analogous polymers. Both structures were found to be very similar. They consist of single layers of upright molecules laterally arranged head-to-tail; the polymer backbone is inserted in between the layers. The monolayer smectic ordering observed in spite of the presence of the interacting cyano and chiral groups demonstrates the prevailing effect of the electrical interactions upon the structural organization. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of extended, symmetric viologen triflimides were synthesised by the metathesis reaction of lithium triflimide with the respective viologen tosyalates in methanol. Their chemical structures were characterised by Fourier Transform Infrared, 1H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Their thermotropic liquid-crystalline (LC) properties were examined by a number of experimental techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarising optical microscopy and variable temperature X-ray diffraction. The viologen salts containing alkyl chain of two carbon and three carbon atoms were relatively low melting salts. Those of alkyl chains of four carbon and five carbon atoms formed ionic liquids at 88 and 42°C, respectively. Those of alkyl chain of 9, 10 and 11 carbon atoms were high melting salts, as high as 166°C. Those of higher alkyl chains of 16, 18 and 20 carbon atoms showed thermotropic LC phases forming SmC, SmA and an unidentified smectic (SmX) phases, and showed SmA to isotropic transitions at high temperatures. As expected, all the viologen triflimides had excellent stabilities in the temperature range of 338–365°C.  相似文献

In this contribution the first examples of so‐called rigid‐core, T‐shaped imidazolium ionic liquid crystals, in which the C‐2 atom of the imidazolium ring is substituted with an aryl moiety decorated with one or two alkoxy chains, are described. The length of the alkoxy chain(s) was varied from six to eighteen carbon atoms (n=6, 10, 14–18). Whereas the compounds with one long alkoxy chain display only smectic A phases, the salts containing two alkoxy chains exhibit smectic A, multicontinuous cubic, as well as hexagonal columnar phases, as evidenced by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and powder X‐ray diffraction. Structural models are proposed for the self‐assembly of the molecules within the mesophases. The imidazolium head groups and the iodide counterions were found to adopt a peculiar orientation in the central part of the columns of the hexagonal columnar phases. A series of semi-aromatic poly(imide-ester)s were prepared by the direct polycondensation of N-(4-carboxyphenyl) trimellitimide or N-(3-carboxyphenyl) trimellitimide with various pyromellitic diimide diols containing methylene spacer = 2–6, respectively. The effect of the amount of LiCl, pyridine, and the kinds of condensation agents on the direct polycondensation were studied. The structures and thermal properties of the synthesized poly(imide-ester)s were examined by FTIR spectrum, wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal optical polarized microscopic observation, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It is found that P1 series [derived from N-(4-carboxyphenyl) trimellitimide] with even number methylene spacer (n = 4, 6) exhibit smectic mesophase, but P2 series [derived from N-(3-carboxyphenyl) trimellitimide] do not show LC phase. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Binary blends of poly(ethylene terephtalate) (PET) and thermotropic liquid crystal polyester (TLCP) have been prepared by both solution and melt blending methods. The TLCPs utilized were Vectra (Hoechst Celanese), TR-4, a TLCP synthesized in our laboratory, and a block copolymer consisting of three TR-4 units followed by three PET units. The phase behavior of the blends was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and optical microscopy. The results show that none of the blends is miscible, but significant interactions exist between the PET phase and the TLCP phase in the case of TR-4 and TR-4 block copolymer blends. These interactions lead to a different nucleation mechanism in these blends compared to that in PET/Vectra.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterisation of a homologous series of monodentate benzimidazolium salts, 14 and their mononuclear silver(I)–NHC (where NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes, 58, are reported. The benzimidazolium salts were prepared from the N-alkylation of 1-methyl-benzimidazole with alkyl halides of varying carbon chain lengths. The mono silver(I)-NHC complexes, 58, were prepared by the reaction of the benzimidazolium salts with Ag2O. All the synthesised compounds were fully characterised by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), 13C-NMR and fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The molecular structures of compounds 3·PF6, 4·PF6, 7 and 8 were elucidated through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. We postulate that the attachment of long alkyl chains to the heterocyclic core of 1-methyl benzimidazole could induce mesophase formation. The liquid crystalline behaviour of the benzimidazolium salts was investigated by polarised optical microscope and differential scanning calorimetry. Salts 3 and 4 were found to be thermotropic liquid crystals which exhibited a smectic A phase. However, upon complexation with silver(I) ions, all the Ag(I)–NHC complexes are found to be non-mesogenic.  相似文献

Schiff base ligand N,N′-di-(4-butylsalicylidene)-1′,3′-diaminopropane [H2L] was synthesised by the reaction of substituted azobenzene and 1,3-diaminopropane in 2:1 molar ratio. Four mononuclear lanthanide complexes of the type [Ln(H2L)LCl] (Ln = LaIII, CeIII, SmIII and GdIII) were synthesised and characterised by 1H,13C NMR, fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis (CHNO), gas chromotography-mass, magnetic susceptibility and molar conductivity. Thermal properties of the title compounds were studied using the thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC) and optical polarising microscopy (OPM). Novel liquid crystalline copoly(ester imide)s were synthesized via polyesterification of triethyleneglycol bis(4-carboxyphenyl) ether ( 1e ), diacetoxybiphenyl, and diacids with imide moieties. The effects of composition on the changes of Tg, Tm, and Ti were examined by global TSC and DSC. Thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA) found that 4a–d and 5a–g possess higher thermal stability. Strong stir opalescence phenomenon and observations from polarized optical microscopy identified that 2b–e and 3a–d possess the typical schlieren texture of an enantiotropic nematic mesophase. The birefrigent melts of 4a–d and 5a–g, however, displayed particular liquid crystalline behavior. Copolymers with higher aromatic imide ring content ( 4a–d, 5a–g ) form a layered structure and an enantiotropic smectic mesophase in the melting state. The melt viscosity of the semetic mesophase was higher than the nematic mesophase which was observed by capillary rheometer. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) formed in tetraethylene glycol lauryl ether–water system by the addition of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C n Mim][BF4], n?=?2, 4, 6, 8, 10) are characterised by polarised optical microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques. A small number of [C n Mim][BF4] molecules can be solubilised in the liquid crystal without changing the lamellar type. These imidazolium salts are considered as an ideal kind of modifiers for the ordered structure. With different lengths of alkyl chains, [C n Mim][BF4] molecules appear in various domains of ordered assemblies: in the water layer for [C2Mim][BF4], in the water layer as well as in the polar domain for [C4Mim][BF4] and in the apolar domain for the other imidazolium salts with long alkyl chains. Diverse distributions of [C n Mim][BF4] molecules in the inner structure bring about their specific influence on the lamellar phase. These results enlighten the use of diverse alkyl-substituted imidazolium salts in modulating LLC and other assemblies and also enrich the aggregation behaviour of these assemblies.  相似文献

The study was to determine selective removal and recovery of Cr(VI) from acidic media by solvent extraction (SX) using asymmetric imidazolium-based room temperature imidazolium bromide salts (ARTILs) as the extractants. The relevant parameters on the extraction and the stripping of Cr(VI) were investigated to identify optimum conditions. The optimum conditions were determined as equilibration time 5 minutes, acid concentration and type 0.5?mol/L H2SO4, stirring speed 1200?rpm, extractant concentration and type 0.5?mol/L ARTIL5, phase ratio 2.0 and stripping reagent type, and concentration 2.0?mol/L NH3. In optimum conditions, decyl substituted ARTIL was best in extraction process about 99.7% of extraction rate, whereas moderately hydrophobic pentyl substituted ARTIL was best in stripping process about 70.0% of stripping rate. Also, the optimized process was found as so selective toward Cr(VI) in the presence of the other metal ions with an environmental-friendly liquid–liquid–based SX method.  相似文献

由于微柱液相色谱(μ-LC)具有高检测灵敏度、低溶剂消耗、可以与质谱等多种检测器联用的优点,近年来受到广泛关注。将咪唑键合硅胶固定相填充到毛细管中,在自制的微柱液相色谱系统下利用此键合相具有的弱疏水作用,采用不同的流动相对酚类和胺类化合物进行了分离。结果表明,流动相中只需添加少量的有机溶剂就可以实现对一些有机化合物的分离,甚至可以只用纯水作流动相就能分离一些弱疏水性化合物,如酚类。微柱液相色谱的流动相用量少,避免或大大减少了对环境的污染。自制微柱液相色谱系统为下一步微柱液相色谱-质谱联用奠定了一定的基础。  相似文献

Two closely series of poly(ester imide)s had been synthesized by solution polycondensation of p‐phenylenebis(trimellitate) dianhydride with aliphatic diamines. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) traces of the most poly(ester imide)s exhibited two endotherms representing the solid state to anisotropic phase transition (Tm1) and the anisotropic to isotropic melt transition (Tm2), respectively. Observation under polarizing microscope and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) measurements suggested that the anisotropic phase formed above the melting points (Tm1) had a smectic character. The thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) revealed that the thermal stabilities of the poly(ester imide)s were up to 350°C. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. ABSTRACT

A homologous series of new chiral liquid crystal compounds, MnBEB (n = 4–10), was prepared by covalently linking a chiral (–)-menthyl with biphenyl-benzoate via a dicarboxylic spacer of varying length and parity. A combination of analysis methods, such as FT-IR, 1H NMR spectra, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarised optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction was carried out to systematically investigate their phase structures and phase transition behaviours. The length and parity of the flexible spacers has a profound influence on the Tm and Tc and a modest odd-even effect is observed for the chiral liquid crystal compounds MnBEB. Only compound M4BEB developed an N* phase with selectively reflection on heating and a blue phase on cooling process. In addition, increasing the length of the flexible spacers tends to narrow the temperature range of the N* phase and widen the smectic phase, moreover, the pitch becomes longer with the spacer increases.  相似文献

Three series of novel poly(amide-ester) (PAE) elastomers were prepared by direct poly-condensation from terephthalic acid (TPA), polyols (Mn = 1000 or 2000), and various diamines. The structures and thermal properties of the synthesized PAEs were examined by FTIR spectroscopy, wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calo-rimetry (DSC), thermal optical polarized microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The effects of kinds and amount of diamines and the molecular weight of polyols on the thermal properties of PAEs were studied. By introducing long flexible spacers (PE-1000 or PE-2000) into the polymer main chain, all polymers showed two-phase morphology under the thermal optical microscopic observation. It was interesting that most of the synthesized polymers exhibited only one melting transition corresponding to the soft segments. The melting transition of hard segments could not be detected due to decomposition of the soft segments. However, a thermotropic liquid crystalline PAE (TLCPAE) prepared from methylhydroquinone and 2-chloro-5-methyl-phenylenediamine with PE-1000 could be obtained by lowering the melting transition temperature of the hard segment. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The effect of secondary hydrogen-bonding interactions on the crystalline and liquid crystalline phases of quaternary ammonium salts functionalised with a carboxylic group attached at the polar head through a decyl spacer of a homologous series of N-alkyl-N-carboxydecyl-N,N-dimethylammonium bromides was investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The low-temperature crystal phases were found to have a lamellar structure in which the ammonium bromide groups are arranged within the layers in two distinct planes, alternately separated by single layers of alkyl chains and double layers of carboxydecyl chains coupled through the carboxyl end groups. At higher temperatures, although these molecules were made from soft flexible chains, smectic H mesophases were identified. The smectic layers were found to be formed by the same two ionic planes alternately separated by the alkyl and carboxydecyl sub-layers. The smectic structure was compared with the three-dimensional positional order observed in the smectic T phase of dihydroxyl functionalised quaternary ammonium salts already described in the literature.  相似文献

Three series of the thermotropic liquid crystalline copoly(imide-ester)s were prepared by direct polycondensation. The first two series of the copoly(imide-ester)s were synthesized from N-(4-carboxyphenyl) trimellitimide with N,N-di(hydroxypropyl) pyromellitic diimide and various aromatic diols. The third series of copoly(imide-ester)s were prepared by N-(4-carboxyphenyl) trimellitimide with various imide-diols (methylene spacer = 2–6) and phenyl hydroquinone. The structures and thermal properties of the synthesized poly(imide-ester)s were examined by FTIR spectrum, wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal optical polarized microscope, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The effects of the structures of the aromatic diols on the thermal properties of the resulting copoly(imide-ester)s were investigated. It was found that most of the copoly(imide-ester)s possessed excellent mesophase stabilities and thermostabilities. The mesophase stabilities of poly(imide-ester)s decreased with the increase of the size of lateral group, and the mesophase range increased with the increase of the amount of PhHQ. No significant odd-even effects were observed between the methylene spacer lengths and transition temperatures. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Similarities and differences in the physical chemistry behaviour among several metal alkanoate series (thallium(I), lead(II) and copper(II)) previously studied are shown here. The presence of a 'condis' phase in the first two series is studied. The thallium and lead series present a smectic A mesogenic behaviour, while the copper(II) one forms molecular aggregates which develop columnar discotic liquid crystal phases. Finally, the monovalent cation salts form acid soaps with the acid; instead, when the cation is bivalent, the acid behaves as a polar solvent similarly to the water-surfactants systems. An intensive study has been conducted to compare the effects of malei hydrazine (MH) and hydroquinone (HQ) on the liquid crystallinity and phase transition behavior in the ABA/HQ/TFTA and ABA/MH/TFTA copolyesters (p‐acetoxybenzoic acid (ABA) and tetrafluoroterephthalic acid (TFTA)). These two copolyesters were prepared by thin‐film polymerization and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing light microscope (PLM), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), as well as Cerius2 computational simulation. Characterization and comparison of the liquid crystalline (LC) evolution and morphology changes of HQ moiety with corresponding MH moiety suggest that ABA/MH/TFTA system is energetically favorable to mesophase formation than ABA/HQ/TFTA system. When the films are quenched, a surface microcrack decoration is observed in both systems. Both systems, which have the persistence ratio larger than 6.42, satisfy the minimum requirement for the LC formation by molecular science software. The ABA/MH/TFTA film exhibits only one single peak transition. However, two distinct transitions have been observed in the ABA/HQ/TFTA system. The average Avrami exponent, n, is ~1.2, and PLM and WAXD results suggest mesophase transition in ABA/MH/TFTA film. As reflected by the results obtained from PLM, WAXD, and DSC studies, the phase transition is confirmed as crystal → nematic → isotropic in ABA/HQ/TFTA copolyester. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of new thermal bilateral liquid crystal compounds with the phenylenebis‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole structure was synthesised. The molecular structures of the oxadiazole compounds were confirmed by FT‐IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and mass spectrometry. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that the compounds in an atmosphere of nitrogen have good thermal stability. Measurements using differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and temperature‐dependent wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction indicated that the liquid crystalline properties are related to the length of the end groups. When the end group was tert‐butyl or alkoxy with four and six carbons, the compounds exhibit no liquid crystal phase. However, compounds with end groups containing more than eight carbons show significant bidirectional thermally‐induced liquid crystal properties and the structure of the liquid crystal phase is the lamellar smectic A phase. All the compounds exhibit blue fluorescence.  相似文献
