Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were prepared from thermal polymerisation-induced phase separation in heat-curable monomers/nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixtures. For PDLCs with a certain amount of LCs, the microstructure and the refractive index of polymer networks could be influenced by the relative content of epoxy monomers, owing to their different chemical structures. The effect of these factors on the electro-optic properties of films was also investigated.  相似文献

A new class of liquid‐crystalline (LC) homopolymers of poly{11‐[4‐(3‐ethoxycarbonyl‐coumarin‐7‐oxy)‐carbonylphenyloxy]‐undecyl methacrylate} containing a coumarin moiety as a photocrosslinkable unit with various polymerization degrees and their LC‐coil diblock and LC‐coil‐LC triblock copolymers with polystyrene as the coil segment was synthesized with the atom transfer radical polymerization method. All the homopolymers and block copolymers synthesized here exhibited narrow polydispersities, indicating well‐controlled living polymerization. Differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction confirmed that all the homopolymers and block copolymers exhibit a monolayer smectic A phase. Coumarin moieties in the polymers can be photodimerized under λ > 300 nm light irradiation to yield crosslinked network structures, which improve the thermal stability of a polymer nanostructure because of microphase separation. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new class of liquid crystalline thermosets (LCTs) was successfully produced containing lyotropic cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as the primary mesogenic component (up to 72 wt%) by the addition of non-mesogenic epoxy monomers. Cellulose-based LCTs were produced by totally aqueous processing methods and ultimately cured at elevated temperatures to produce ordered networks of ‘frozen’ liquid crystalline (LC) phases. Various degrees of birefringence were obtained via self-assembly of CNCs into oriented phases as observed by polarized optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction measurements highlighted the effects of texture of CNCs within LCT films compared to lyophilized CNCs. Cellulose-based LCT films uniquely exhibited thermo-mechanical properties of both traditional LCTs and LC elastomers, such as high elastic modulus (~1 GPa) under ambient conditions and low glass transition temperature (~?25 °C), respectively. The development of LCTs based on CNCs and aqueous processing methods provides a renewable pathway for designing high performance composites with ordered network structures and unique optical properties.  相似文献

Four new epoxy monomers have been synthesized and characterized as part of a program to prepare novel liquid crystal thermoset (LCT) materials. Three of the new epoxy monomers contained a biphenyl mesogen and were not liquid crystalline (LC). The remaining epoxy monomer, which contained a 1,4-dibenzoyloxybenzene mesogen, was synthesized in an overall yield of 30% and displayed a broad (83°C) nematic liquid crystalline phase. The new liquid crystalline epoxy monomer was cured at 120°C and postcured at 175°C with a stoichiometric amount of 1,4-phenylenediamine. The thermal transitions of the resulting LCT were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light optical microscopy (POM), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), and wide angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD) as a function of cure time and temperature. A process characterization diagram was constructed which shows that LCTs based on this new LC monomer can be processed in the liquid crystalline phase over a broad range of times and temperatures. Qualitative agreement with previous epoxy LCT results was found, as LCT's with smectic phases and without clearing temperatures were observed at long cure times (high crosslink densities), whereas nematic phases with clearing temperatures predominated in networks at short cure times (low crosslink densities). © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Two dicationic salts with bis(triflimide) as counterions exhibited crystal-to-smectic liquid crystalline phase transitions (T m=41 and 37°C) and smectic-to-isotropic liquid phase transitions (T i=112, 136°C). They had a broad liquid crystalline phase range (71–99°C) and an excellent range of thermal stability (360–364°C). Their mixtures of various compositions also displayed liquid crystalline properties from r.t. to an extended range of temperatures. They exhibited fluorescence in 1, 2-dimethoxyethane and methanol.  相似文献

The interaction between morphological structure and phase behaviour of a group of LC side group block copolymers have been investigated using DSC, TEM and small angle X-ray diffraction. Generally, phase separation between the two blocks was observed. It was found that in the case of those samples, where the liquid crystalline sub-phase is not continuous (spheres), only a nematic phase is seen, whereas in all samples in which there is a continuous liquid crystalline sub-phase, the smectic A phase of the homopolymer is formed. On the other hand, the block copolymer seems to stabilise the LC-phase and the polymer properties in general, no dependency of the clearing temperatures and of the glass transition temperatures from the molecular weight of the LC blocks has been detected.  相似文献

A series of poly[oxy(4‐n‐alkyl‐3,5‐benzoate)oxy‐1,4‐phenylenediacryloyl]s (PPDA‐CnBZ polymers) with high molecular weights was synthesized. These polymers exhibit excellent solubility in some common organic solvents and produce good quality films using conventional spin‐casting and drying processes. The polymers are thermally stable up to 357–362 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere; their glass transition temperatures are greater than 121 °C. The photoreactions and photoalignments of the polymers were investigated using ultraviolet‐visible and infrared spectroscopy, and their liquid crystal (LC) alignment properties were examined. The phenylenediacrylate (PDA) chromophores in the polyesters were found to mainly undergo photocyclization upon ultraviolet light irradiation. Irradiation of the polyester films with linearly polarized ultraviolet light (LPUVL) induces preferential orientation of the polymer main chains, while the unreacted PDA chromophores are aligned along the direction perpendicular to the electric vector of the LPUVL. All the films irradiated with LPUVL were found to align LCs in a direction perpendicular to the electric vector of the LPUVL. Moreover, these LC alignments persisted even on irradiated films annealed at temperatures up to 210 °C, which is much higher than the glass transition temperatures of the polyesters. These LC alignment characteristics are due to the anisotropic interactions of the LC molecules with the oriented polymer chains and with the unreacted PDA chromophores. LC alignments on the polyester film surfaces have homeotropic to homogeneous characteristics, depending on the length of the n‐alkyl side group, providing strong evidence that the n‐alkyl side groups of the polyesters play a critical role in determining the pretilt angles of the LCs. The LC pretilt angles were also found to be influenced by the thermal annealing history of the irradiated films. In summary, the excellent properties of the PPDA‐CnBZ polymers make them promising candidate materials for use as LC alignment layers in advanced LC display devices. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Organic–inorganic hybrid liquid crystal (LC) gels have been synthesised by the thiol-ene reaction of a multifunctional cyclic siloxane, 1,3,5,7-tetravinyl-1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (TVMCTS) and alkane dithiols, 1,6-hexanedithiol (HDT) or 1,9-decanedithiol (DDT), in LC matrices, 4-cyano-4?-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) or 4′-n-octyl-4-cyano-biphenyl (8CB). The LC gels were prepared in an isotropic phase at 70°C or mesophases at 25°C using radical initiators. The phase transition temperatures from a mesophase to an isotropic phase of the resulting gels were lower than those of the original LCs. The gels containing 8CB (8CB gels) prepared at 25°C showed two phase transitions: smectic-to-nematic and nematic-to-isotropic transitions. By contrast, the 8CB gels synthesised in the isotropic phase showed only one phase transition from smectic phase directly to isotropic phase. Reaction conversions in the LC gels prepared at 70°C were higher than that in the gels prepared at 25°C. Scanning microscopic light scattering analysis of the LC gels cleared homogeneous small size mesh with a small amount of large defect. Polarisation micrographs of the LC gels showed framed optical textures derived from the LC molecules at room temperature. The LC gels containing more than 90 wt% of LC showed electro-optic response.  相似文献

A series of novel liquid crystalline monomers and polymers incorporating phenylbenzoate or phenylcinnamate segments as mesogenic cores have been synthesized to investigate the sensitivity of the photochromic cinnamoyl derivatives and to overcome the defects of the thermal instability of azobenzene. Their liquid crystalline, thermal, and photoinduced properties of all monomers and polymers were characterized. The polymers showed excellent solubility in common organic solvents such as CHCl3, toluene, and DMF and exhibited good thermal stability with decomposition temperatures (Td) at 5% weight loss greater than 340 °C and about 50% weight loss occurred beyond 430 °C under nitrogen atmosphere. The pitch length (about 574 nm) of the synthesized cholesteric polymeric film ( CP2 ) was estimated using scanning electron microscopy. These photochromic polymers exhibited strong UV–vis absorption maxima at about 264 or 320 nm. Moreover, photo induced configurational E/Z isomerization further changed the π‐electron conjugation systems leading to a decrease at the π‐π* transition and an increase in the range of 300 nm to 400 nm for photochromic copolymers. The thermal stability of the Z‐structural segment was confirmed by heating the polymer at 50 °C for over 5 h. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A diamine‐based benzoxazine monomer (Bz) and a liquid crystalline epoxy monomer (LCE) are synthesized, respectively. Subsequently, a benzoxazine‐epoxy interpenetrating polymer network (PBEI) containing liquid crystalline structures is obtained by sequential curing of the LCE and the Bz in the presence of imidazole. The results show that the preferential curing of LCE plays a key role in the formation mechanism of liquid crystalline phase. Due to the introduction of liquid crystalline structures, the thermal conductivity of PBEI increases with increasing content of LCE. When the content of LCE is 80 wt %, the thermal conductivity reaches 0.32 W m?1 K?1. Additionally, the heat‐resistance of PBEI is superior to liquid crystalline epoxy resin. Among them, PBEI55 containing equal weight of Bz and LCE has better comprehensive performance. Its thermal conductivity, glass transition temperature, and the 5 % weight loss temperature are 0.28 W m?1 K?1, 160 °C, and 339 °C, respectively. By introducing boron nitride (BN) fillers into PBEI55, a composite of PBEI/BN with the highest thermal conductivity of 3.00 W m?1 K?1 is obtained. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. For the first time, a photochromic azobenzene-containing liquid crystalline (LC) acrylic polymer was used for gelation of low-molar-mass nematic mixture (LMNM). Dissolution of LC polymer in amount of only 2.5 wt.% in LMNM at 120°C (isotropic state) followed by cooling down results in formation of the solid-like photochromic LC gel. Gelation is associated with a phase separation and formation of microsized LC polymer domains, which form a physical “network” containing encapsulated nematic host. Textural changes of mixture during gel formation were analyzed, and absorbance spectra were measured. A special attention was paid to the kinetic study of photoinduced E-Z and Z-E isomerization of azobenzene side groups of polymer in gel. It was shown that ultraviolet (UV)-irradiation and E-Z isomerization processes are accompanied by disruption of H-aggregates of azobenzene moieties and partial dissolution of polymer.  相似文献

4-(1-Adamantyl)phenol was synthesized via Friedel-Crafts reaction of 1-bromoadamantane and phenol. Substitution in the phenol para position forces polymerization to occur only in the ortho positions to give a linear polymer. Variations in formaldehyde amount, reaction time, and catalyst were evaluated. Increasing the amount of paraformaldehyde increased formation of cyclic octamer, an easily identified by-product due to its insolubility in common organic solvents. The cyclic octamer was acetylated to give a soluble model compound for comparison to acetylated polymers by IR and NMR. All of the synthetic variations employed produced low molecular weight polymers as indicated by NMR end-group analysis and SEC. The polymers showed number-average molecular weights of ca. 3000 (versus polystyrene standards by SEC), and exhibited glass transition temperatures ranging from 175–230°C, an increase of ca. 100°C over unsubstituted and para-alkyl substituted analogs. All of the samples exhibited a 10% weight loss at 400°C in nitrogen, indicating thermal stability much greater than the parent and alkyl-substituted polymers. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Cross‐linked liquid‐crystalline (LC) polymers with a mesomorphic diarylethene were prepared to demonstrate a versatile strategy for cross‐linked photochromic LC polymers as photomobile materials. Upon exposure to UV light to cause photocyclization of the diarylethene chromophore, the cross‐linked polymer films bend toward an actinic light source. By irradiation with visible light to cause a closed‐ring to open‐ring isomerization, the bent films revert to the initial flat state. Without visible‐light irradiation, the bent films remain bent even at 120 °C, indicating high thermal stability of the cross‐linked diarylethene LC polymers.  相似文献

Hydroxyalkyl-methacrylates are very well-known hydrogel-forming biocompatible polymers. In this work, polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (LCs) based on hydroxyethyl- and hydroxypropyl-methacrylate (HEMA and HPMA) matrices are synthesised and characterised. Two different LCs from the cyano-biphenyl family (4?-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl [5CB] and 4?-octyl-4-cyanobiphenyl [8CB]) are used. Polymerisation kinetics, phase transitions, and morphologies generated during the polymerisation-induced phase separation process are analysed. Phase separation is observed at very low conversions, where a polymer-rich phase is initially segregated and this produces an increase in the low-conversion polymerisation rate (ascribed to the auto-acceleration effect of free-radical polymerisations in the polymer-rich phase). The liquid crystalline transition temperature decreases as the concentration of LC decreases, indicating that this phase is impurified. The liquid crystal 8CB is found to be less miscible than 5CB with the polymer matrices, so the LC-rich phase for 5CB is more impurified and its total volume in the material is smaller.  相似文献

To improve the morphological and electro‐optical properties of a polymer‐dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) grating, a type of highly fluorine‐substituted acrylate monomer was added to the prepolymer mixture. The morphologies of the PDLC gratings were investigated using atom force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The grating had a very clear polymer/LC interface after addition of 3.9 wt % of fluorine‐substituted monomer. The LC droplets in this case were much larger than the sample without fluorinated monomer. This phenomenon indicated that an almost complete phase separation had occurred. However, as the content of fluorine‐substituted monomer increased, the morphologies of gratings became less defined and the volumes of LC droplets were smaller. The diffraction efficiency (DE) decreased with increasing of fluoride content and the V 90 increased simultaneously, which may be ascribed to the blurry interface and the small LC droplets. The highest DE (90%) and lowest V 90 (70 V) were obtained simultaneously under the condition of 3.9 wt % fluoride added in the prepolymer. In addition, it was also found that the fluorine‐substituted monomer may disorder the alignment of LCs in the grating.  相似文献

Novel nematic fluorescent main-chain liquid crystalline ionomers containing Eu(III) ions (Eu-LCI) were synthesised by the use of bis(4-(chlorocarbonyl)phenyl) decanedioate (BD), 4,4-dihydroxybiphenyl (D), 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (B) and anhydrous europium chloride. The chemical structures, liquid crystalline behaviours and fluorescence properties of Eu-LCI were characterised by various experimental techniques. The introduction of small amounts of europium ions endowed the LCI with excellent luminescence properties. POM results showed that europium ions did not change the liquid crystalline texture of the LCI. Fourier transform infrared imaging showed that europium ions were evenly distributed in the matrices of ionomers. A schematic diagram of nematic fluorescent LCI was established to demonstrate the interaction and distribution of the components. Eu-LCI showed reversible mesomorphic phase transitions, wide mesophase temperature ranges and high thermal stability. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results showed that decomposition temperatures (5% weight loss) were greater than 308°C in all Eu-LCI. Eu-LCI can emit red light when excited. The luminescence intensity of Eu-LCI gradually increased with increase in Eu(III) ions from 0.3 to 1.5 mol%. The temperature dependence of luminescent intensity was studied in the liquid crystalline phase, where the fluorescence intensity of Eu-LCI decreased monotonically with increase in temperature.  相似文献

Two‐dimensional time‐domain 1H NMR was used to investigate annealed isotactic polypropylene in the solid phase. The spin–lattice relaxation in the laboratory frame and in the rotating frame were correlated with the shape of the free induction decay to identify and characterize relaxation components over the temperature range −120 to 120 °C. Several phase transitions were observed, and three distinct solid phases, with different chain mobilities, were detected. Two of these phases were identified as regions with different mobilities within the crystalline phase. The third phase was characterized by a high degree of isotropy in molecular motion. This phase, identified as the amorphous phase, appeared as the polymer was heated above a low‐temperature (−45 °C) phase transition. All transitions observed at higher temperatures occurred exclusively in this phase. About one‐third of the polymer chains reside between crystalline lamellae, whereas the majority form amorphous regions outside fibrils of multilamellar structure. Furthermore, the glass‐to‐rubber transition, occurring above −15 °C, consists of three stages. During the first stage, between −15 °C and 15 °C, regions with an increased segment mobility (labeled intermediate phase) appear gradually within the amorphous phase. At 15 °C, the intermediate phase consists of ∼10% of the polymer units, or one‐third of the polymer units constituting the amorphous phase. Between 15 °C and 25 °C, the intermediate phase increases rapidly to 18%. This is associated with the appearance of semiliquid and liquid regions, likely within the intermediate phase. Polymer chain segments (and possibly entire chains) involved in the liquidlike phases exhibit heterogeneous molecular motion with a correlation frequency higher than 106 Hz. These two stages of glass‐to‐rubber transition occur within amorphous regions outside multilamellar structures. The third stage of the glass transition, appearing above 70 °C, is associated with the upper glass transition and occurs within the interlamellar amorphous phase. Finally, on a timescale of 100 ms or less, spin diffusion does not couple the amorphous regions outside fibrils with crystalline and amorphous regions within multilamellar fibrils. However, on a timescale of hundreds of milliseconds to seconds, all different regions within isotactic polypropylene are partially coupled. It is proposed that the relative magnitude of the crystalline magnetization, as observed in the T experiment, is a good measure of polymer crystallinity. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A (photo-polymerizable liquid crystal (LC) monomer/LCs/chiral dopant/photoinitiator) mixture with a smectic A (SmA)-chiral nematic (N*) phase transition was sandwiched between two ITO glass substrates which were not subjected to any surface orientation treatment. When an electric field-induced homeotropically oriented SmA phase of the mixture was irradiated with UV light, an oriented liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) network was formed upon photo-polymerization of the LC monomer. Then, a (homeotropically oriented LCP network/LCs/chiral dopant) composite with a SmA-N* phase transition was prepared. A focal-conic texture appeared in the heat-induced N* phase of the composite upon heating from the transparent state of the homeotropically oriented SmA phase; the focal-conic texture exhibited strong light scattering. Upon cooling the composite to the SmA phase, this phase was again homeotropically oriented due to the strong intermolecular interaction between the LC molecules and the homeotropically oriented LCP network. Thus, the transparent state of the SmA phase and the light scattering state of the N* phase occurred reversibly upon cooling and heating, accompanied by the thermal SmA-N* phase transition.  相似文献

A series of side-chain liquid crystal (LC) polysiloxanes were synthesised with Poly(methylhydrogeno)siloxane, 4?-(undec-10-enoyloxy) biphenyl – 4 – yl 4- (trifluoromethyl) benzoate (Mth) and a chiral nematic (N*) LC monomer 1-allyl 10-(cholesteryl)-decanedioate (Mch). The chemical structures and LC properties of the monomers and polymers were characterised by FTIR, 1H-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, POM and X-ray diffractometer. Mch is monotropic N* LC. The homopolymer derived from monomer Mch is enantiotropic N* LC. Monomer Mth is a smectic A liquid crystal. The copolymers derived from Mch and Mth are N* LCs. The temperatures at which 5% weight loss occurred are greater than 300°C for all the fluoro-containing polymers, and the residue weights of the samples at 600°C increased slightly as the content of trifluoromethyl mesogens increased in the polymers. The glass transition temperatures of the polymers increased as trifluoromethyl mesogens increased, too. The N*–I phase transition temperatures show a negative deviate from ideal or linear behaviour. The values of the enthalpy changes for the cholesteryl containing polymers are rather low and this is attributed to the biaxiality of cholesteryl moiety which tends to reduce the change in the orientational order at the N*–I transition. Compared to the monomers, the polymers show wider mesophase region.  相似文献
