CdSe quantum dots (QDs) dispersed ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) has been subjected to small and wide-angle X-ray scattering and atomic force microscopy to understand the molecular organization in chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase. SAXS indicates that the presence of QDs causes enhancement in the smectic layer separation. The smectic order parameter for neat FLC and FLC–QDs mixtures is obtained in the range of 0.6 to 0.85. Both smectic order parameter and structural tilt are found to be lesser for FLC–QDs mixtures as compared to neat FLC. The insertion of QDs in SmC* matrix causes localized smectic layer distortion in such a way that spontaneous polarization remains almost the same but the electro-optic switching of molecules becomes faster. We have outlined the superiority of FLC–QDs mixtures for electrical energy storage and their suitability in electronic devices. 相似文献

In this article, a newly synthesised ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) material, namely LAHS 22, has been characterised. The characterisation of the FLC material has been performed using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and polarisation optical microscopy. We observed an enhancement in the dielectric and electro-optical properties of the FLC material by incorporating gold nanoparticles (GNPs)-decorated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The GNPs-decorated MWCNTs cause an increment in dielectric dispersion (up to kHz), absorption, spontaneous polarisation and rotational viscosity of the FLC material. The pure and GNPs-decorated MWCNTs doped FLC cells were analysed by means of various dielectric spectroscopic and optical measurements. The observed enhancement in the dielectric and electro-optical properties of the FLC material has also been studied with concentration of GNPs-decorated MWCNTs in FLC material. The GNPs-decorated MWCNTs/FLC composites are not only of fundamental importance, but also useful materials for device applications such as liquid crystal displays and memory devices. 相似文献

A systematic study highlighting the effect of cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe QDs) with varying concentrations of 0.05, 0.10 and 1.0 wt% doping on the electrooptical and dielectric parameters of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) is presented. No considerable change is observed in phase transition temperature and tilt angle with CdSe QDs doping at lower and higher dopant level. Substantial enhancement of localised electric field at higher doping level (1.0 wt%) of CdSe QDs manifested the ≈48% reduction in the switching response of FLC nanocolloids at 30°C. Reduction in the spontaneous polarisation, dielectric constant and absorption strength could be attributed to the antiparallel correlation among dopant and matrix molecules, ion capturing in the capping additive layer and enhancement of the rotational viscosity of the nanocolloids, respectively. Goldstone mode relaxation frequency is found to be decreased with doping up to 0.10 wt% concentration and showed reverse effect at higher QDs concentration. QDs doping effect on the photoluminescence intensity is also discussed. 相似文献

Cd1?xZnxS/ZnS core/shell-structured quantum dot (QD)-doped ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) Felix 17/000 has been investigated in the present study. In the SmC* phase, the effect of QD on the dielectric and electro-optical properties of FLC has been studied as a function of dopant concentration. A substantial change in the different parameters like tilt angle, spontaneous polarisation, response time and relative permittivity has been observed for the composite system. Nearly two times faster response of the composite system with lower operating voltage is one of the promising results of the present study. The faster optical response along with the decreased value of spontaneous polarisation can be utilised in low power consumption liquid crystal displays. 相似文献

The reflectivity control device, initially developed for attitude control, is utilised to control the solar sail orbit by switching the states between absorption and specular reflection. Actually, the major parts of the device are the polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films. Here, PDLC films based on polyimide (PI) as polymer matrix and a low molecular weight LC can be prepared by the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method. The influences of cooling rate and the content of LC on the size and uniformity of LC droplets dispersed in a polymer matrix by a TIPS process were investigated. It was found that a fast cooling rate gave smaller droplet sizes and hence a more uniform distribution as compared to the ones produced under a slow cooling rate. If the LC content was increased, the droplet size would be increased. Furthermore, the effect of LC droplet size on the electro-optical properties of the PI-based PDLC films was discussed, such as transmittance, threshold voltage, driving voltage and contrast ratio (CR). 相似文献

We report the enhancement in the molecular ordering of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) doped with CdSe/ZnSe graded core/shell (CZ) quantum dots (QDs) by using optical methods. Significant decrease in operating voltage and enhancement in optical brightness are assigned to the large primary order parameter (θ) and hence anchoring of FLC molecules by CZ QDs. The enhancement in photoluminescence is conjectured to be due to an increase in molecular alignment yielding higher absorption which is confirmed by excitation spectra. These observations would definitely offer a promising tool to get superior core/shell QD incorporated FLC-based display devices. 相似文献

The effects on the physical and electro-optical properties of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) after the doping of a dilute suspension of ferroelectric nanoparticles (BaTiO3) have been studied. Due to the permanent electric dipole moments of the ferroelectric nanoparticles, the spontaneous polarisation of FLCs with low doping concentration was about twice that of pure FLCs, in addition to a significant improvement in the dielectric properties, the response time and the V-shaped switching in the chiral smectic C (SmC?) phase. The results obtained point the way to an alternative for improving the applicability of FLCs without resorting to chemical synthesis. 相似文献

In this paper, polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films which based on the acrylate and the thiol monomers were first prepared by ultraviolet-initiated polymerisation. The electro-optical properties and morphologies of the PDLC films were systematically investigated. The functionality of thiol monomers and their feed ratio showed great influence on the properties of the fabricated PDLC films because of the existence of competition between thiol–acrylate reaction and acrylate monomer polymerisation reaction. This made the polymer network and electro-optical properties of the PDLC films easily tunable by the introduction of the thiol monomers. When added four-functional thiol monomer PETMP with appropriate concentration into the PDLC system, lower driven voltage and higher contrast ratio were achieved. 相似文献

ABSTRACTIn this paper, polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films based on epoxy-mercaptan system were prepared by thermal-initiated polymerization. The effects of the liquid crystal (LC) content, the proportion and the functionality of epoxy monomers on the polymer structures and electro-optical properties of the as-made PDLC films were investigated systematically. It was found that the morphologies of the polymer matrix can be altered from polymer meshes to polymer balls by increasing the LC content as well as the functionality of epoxy monomers. Accordingly, the electro-optical properties could be regulated by the morphologies of polymer networks. Especially, the as-made PDLC films with homogeneous porous structures exhibited the optimal electro-optical properties. Consequently, this work offers a meaningful approach to control the microstructures and optimize the electro-optical properties of PDLC films, which indeed can form a wonderful footstone for the wide application of PDLC. 相似文献

The different fluorinated liquid crystal (LC) molecules doped to E8 were used as LC component to prepare polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films. The mass fraction of the LC mixture is fixed 50.0 wt%. Results indicate that doping 8.0 wt% fluorinated LC molecule ME3CP to E8 significantly reduced the driving voltage of the PDLC films, and the driving voltage reduced with the rise of mass fraction of ME3CP. Besides, the terminal flexible chain length of the fluorinated LC molecule influenced the LC mixture properties based on E8, such as the dielectric anisotropy, birefringence and viscosity of the LC mixture, and the morphology and the electro-optical properties of PDLC films were controlled not only by the physical properties of the LC mixture, but also by the terminal flexible chain length of the fluorinated LC molecule . 相似文献

A polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film that has good electro-optical properties is produced by the method of polymerized-induced phase separation. Based on the application foreground, its capability parameters, such as contrast ratio, work voltage, and visual angle, are characterized for the first time by a white light but not a fixed wavelength light. The results show the PDLC film has a low work-voltage of 20 V, more than 150° visual angle, high stability, and long lifetime. The differences between plastic and glass ITO-coated substrates of PDLC films are also studied in this paper. The plastic substrate has better property and will have a wider perspective especially in the portable, tender and folded display devices. Due to adjustable properties of film by electric field, PDLC has the potential application for display device, sensor, switch, grating, and new generation analytical apparatus. 相似文献

We investigated the dielectric losses and the ionic currents in the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) doped with semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) of CdSe/ZnS core – shell type and covered with trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) molecules. The dielectric loss tangent of the NLC composites increased with increasing the QDs concentration from 0.1 to 0.3 wt%. The density of mobile ions in the composites increased linearly and the average values of ions mobility in the composites decreased with increasing the QDs concentration. The fast ions with the mobility of about 10–10 m2/V·s and the slow ions with the mobility of about 10–11 m2/V·s were detected in the NLC composites. The growth of the content of slow ions took place with increasing the QDs concentrations. Increasing the dielectric loss tangent was observed with increasing the duration of sonication time of the NLC composites to prepare homogeneous suspensions. The fragmentation of the CdS/ZnS shell as a result of the sonication may lead to the appearance of the slow ions in the NLC composites. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Polymer stabilised liquid crystal (PSLC) devices are widely used in various smart light modulation occasions. Their electro-optical properties can still be improved to address future challenges. It is well known that doping liquid crystal (LC) materials with nanoparticles can change the material’s electro-optical performance. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with size about 15–20 nm and surfactant were doped into PSLC devices. The effects of AgNPs doping on the PSLC electro-optical performances were studied. The result shows that AgNPs and surfactant doping can increase the dielectric anisotropy of LC mixture. PSLC devices with AgNPs doping have lower driving voltage and response time than un-doped PSLC devices. Therefore, doping of a specific concentration of AgNPs resulted in PSLC devices with improved electro-optical performance. 相似文献

A novel vertical alignment film for nematic liquid crystals is reported based on electrostatic self‐assembly of alkyl sulfonic salts in aqueous solution. A series of self‐assembled films with different alkyl chain lengths were prepared and used as alignment films. It was revealed that only when the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain approaches 11 or larger, could the self‐assembled film induce vertical alignment of liquid crystals. We also found that the homeotropic alignment of liquid crystals was related to the surface roughness of self‐assembled films. In addition, this vertical alignment film showed good electro‐optical characteristics and excellent thermal stability. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThe structures of the liquid crystal (LC) molecules have a key role in impacting the electro-optical performance of a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film. In this paper, the relationship between the LC molecular structures and the electro-optical properties of PDLC films is investigated based on an unexplored cyano-terminated tolane compounds (CTTCs) doped E8 LCs/UV polymers system. Due to the high polarity of CTTCs, LCs doped with the cyano-terminated tolane (CTT) molecules exhibit high birefringence and large positive dielectric anisotropy. On the whole, PDLC films doped with the CTT molecules exhibit a lower driving voltage than that doped with the pure E8. More excitingly, PDLC films based on CTT molecules with larger length-to-width ratio and longer conjugated system show higher contrast ratio (CR) and faster response time. Eventually, the mechanism of the effects of CTT-based molecular structures and the relationship between the electro-optical performance of PDLC films and CTT molecules are illustrated. This work paves a new way for optimising the electro-optical properties of PDLC films. 相似文献

The article shows that the recently presented technique based on the temperature dependence of the characteristic peak frequency (fext) of the real part of second harmonic electro-optic (EO) response can be complementary to the Debye type relaxation method, usually used to study the dynamical behaviour of liquid crystals (LCs). The most important advantages of this method are the sensitivity – no pretransitional effects observed, and simplicity – no fitting procedure necessary. The problem is illustrated with the experimental first and second harmonic EO spectra recorded for LC material with broad temperature range of the helical smectic subphases. The obtained values of the frequency rate of each characteristic response of every polar phase are correlated with the particular collective modes. 相似文献

We prepared composites of a liquid crystalline material, 4-pentylphenyl 4-octyloxybenzoate (4PP4OB) and cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe-QDs) and investigated their thermodynamic, electro-optical and dielectric properties. The effect of QDs on transition temperature from isotropic to nematic and nematic to smectic A phases was evaluated in this study. The effect of CdSe-QDs inclusion on various display parameters on host liquid crystals was studied in the nematic phase. The electrical parameters of the composites – relative permittivity, dielectric anisotropy, dielectric loss and dielectric relaxation – were investigated in the nematic and smectic phases. The changes in dielectric parameters of the composites are explained in terms of Maier–Meier theory. 相似文献

To study effects of the crosslinking agent/diluents/thiol on morphology of the polymer matrix and the electro-optical properties of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films, samples were prepared by ultraviolet (UV)-initiated polymerisation. Due to the interaction between thiol–acrylate reaction and acrylate monomers polymerisation, the sample compositions were the foremost determinant to the microstructures which in turn played an essential role on the electro-optical properties of the PDLC films. With the increasing content of the crosslinking agent, the LC droplet size decreased, while the thiol had a contrary effect on the LC droplet size. It was demonstrated that the superior properties of the low-driven voltage (37.2 V), the high contrast ratio (148.2), the short response time (14.9 ms) and the high saturation transmittance (86.6%) could benefit from a novel microstructure which had a dense surface and meshes with microspheres attached. It was of great significance for the optimisation and the potential applications of the PDLC films. 相似文献

The photoluminescence (PL) of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) that form stable nanocomposites with polymer liquid crystals (LCs) as smectic C hydrogen‐bonded homopolymers from a family of poly[4‐(n‐acryloyloxyalkyloxy)benzoic acids] is reported. The matrix that results from the combination of these units with methoxyphenyl benzoate and cholesterol‐containing units has a cholesteric structure. The exciton PL band of QDs in the smectic matrix is redshifted with respect to QDs in solution, whereas a blueshift is observed with the cholesteric matrix. The PL lifetimes and quantum yield in cholesteric nanocomposites are higher than those in smectic ones. This is interpreted in terms of a higher order of the smectic matrix in comparison to the cholesteric one. CdSe QDs in the ordered smectic matrix demonstrate a splitting of the exciton PL band and an enhancement of the photoinduced differential transmission. These results reveal the effects of the structure of polymer LC matrices on the optical properties of embedded QDs, which offer new possibilities for photonic applications of QD–LC polymer nanocomposites. 相似文献
