A new series of lactic acid derivatives has been prepared with molecular cores consisting of two laterally substituted biphenyls connected by an ester group. The compounds exhibited the TGBA phase in a broad temperature range. In addition, for some compounds, a narrow blue phase was found above the TGBA phase on cooling from the isotropic phase. Except for the compound with the shortest chain, the TGBC phase appeared below the TGBA phase. The low temperature SmC* phase existed within the interval up to 80 K, including the overcooled state, which was down to room temperature. In the compounds studied a strong pre-transitional phenomenon took place manifested as a broad peak on the differential scanning calorimetry plot in the isotropic phase. The phases were established on the basis of a planar sample and free-standing film microscope observation. Small angle X-ray diffraction measurements provided information about layer spacing, d, and confirmed the phase assignment. Dielectric spectroscopy revealed the soft and Goldstone modes in the respective TGBA and SmC* phases.  相似文献

Temperature-dependent dielectric spectroscopic measurements of newly synthesised ribbon-shaped chiral liquid crystalline dendrimer with photochromic azobenzene mesogens and an isosorbide chiral centre on planar anchoring cell have been performed in the frequency range of 1.0 Hz to 5.5 MHz. Three dielectric dispersions in the relaxation frequency range of 10–80 Hz, 80–130 kHz and ~3.5 MHz have been observed not only in chiral smectic phase but also in isotropic phase in which two lower-frequency processes are retarded while the other one remained at same relaxation rate from isotropic to chiral smectic phase. Based on the dielectric and optical polarising microscopic results, the chiral smectic phase has been identified as SmC* phase. The relaxation mode observed at low-frequency region in the SmC* phase followed the dielectric characteristics of pinned Goldstone mode. Whereas the dielectric dispersions observed at high-frequency region have been analysed in the framework of the model given by Maier and Meier.  相似文献

Switching and dielectric relaxation phenomena were investigated for an antiferroelectric liquid crystal, 4,4‐(1‐methyloctyloxycarbonyl)phenyl]‐4′‐[3‐(butanoyloxy)prop‐1‐oxy]biphenyl carboxylate, exhibiting chiral smectic A (SmA*), smectic C (SmC*) and antiferroelectric (SmCA*) phases. Spontaneous polarisations, rotational viscosities, relaxation frequencies, dielectric strengths and distribution parameters were determined as a function of temperature. The electric field required for saturation of the spontaneous polarisation increased with a decrease in temperature. In the SmA* phase, only one relaxation mechanism was observed that behaves as soft mode. Two relaxation processes were detected in the SmC* phase. A high‐frequency relaxation process invariant at 2.2 kHz was due to a Goldstone mode, but the origin of low‐frequency relaxation process (1–20 Hz) is unclear; however, it may belong to an X‐mode. The dielectric spectrum of the SmCA* phase exhibits two absorption peaks separated by two decades of frequency. The low‐frequency peak is related to the antiferroelectric Goldstone mode, whereas the high‐frequency peak originates from the anti‐phase fluctuation of the directors in the anti‐tilt pairs of the SmCA* phase.  相似文献

Liquid crystal compound N-(4-n-pentyloxybenzalidene) 4′-n-pentylaniline is very interesting because of its rich phase variant, i.e. nematic, smectic A, smectic C, smectic F and smectic G phases. In the present work, temperature- and frequency-dependent dielectric studies on this compound in the homeotropic and planar orientation of molecules have been carried out in the frequency range of 1 Hz–10 MHz. The compound shows negative dielectric anisotropy (i.e. Δε < 0). Dielectric studies have shown three relaxation modes of different origin in various phases of the material. Relaxation frequencies of the observed modes follow Arrhenius behaviour. The relaxation due to interfacial polarisation, i.e. Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars effect has been observed in the nematic and isotropic phases. A relaxation mode due to the fluctuation of molecular tilt resembling the soft mode has been detected in the smectic A phase with pre- and post-transitional effects. Another mode due to the fluctuation of molecules about their short axes has been detected in the nematic and smectic A, C, F and G phases. Activation energies and ionic conductivity of these phases have also been determined.  相似文献

Complex dielectric spectroscopy (frequency range 5 Hz–13 MHz) has been used to analyse the frequency, temperature and bias‐field dependences of the molecular dynamics of a very high‐spontaneous‐polarization ferroelectric liquid crystalline material exhibiting SmA, SmC* and unknown SmX smectic phases. Different smectic phase transition temperatures have been observed from the study of the temperature dependence of the dielectric strength and the relaxation frequency. The phase transition temperatures (crystalline to isotropic phases) have also been described very accurately from the temperature‐dependent symmetric and asymmetric shape parameters of the relaxation function and also the dc conductivity. In a planar aligned cell, two symmetric modes (Goldstone mode and domain mode) have been observed in both the SmX and SmC* phases. One asymmetric mode (X‐mode) observed in the SmC* and SmA phases could be related to the interaction of dipoles of the ferroelectric liquid crystals being affected by the surface of the cell. The soft mode, which usually appears very close to the SmC*–SmA phase transition was not observed until the bias field was applied. The second order nature of the SmC*–SmA phase transition was revealed.  相似文献

A diarylethane alpha-chloro ester was mixed with a chiral dopant of high helical twisting power at variable concentration to study its capability for induction of twist grain boundary phases. With increasing concentration of the chiral dopant, TGBA* and TGBC* phases were observed with a rather broad region of existence. In contrast to homeotropic alignment, planar boundary conditions seem to enhance the phase stability of the TGB phases, resulting in metastable TGB states and phase coexistence with the respective smectic phases. The phase growth of SmA*/SmC* out of the TGBA*/TGBC* state was studied under isothermal conditions as a function of temperature and concentration of the chiral dopant.  相似文献

We synthesised a series of rod-like mesogens with a (S)-2-methylbutyl-(S)-lactate unit in the chiral chain that exhibited extremely wide temperature ranges in the TGBA and TGBC* phases. TGB phases were identified, based on typical textures in confined samples and in free-standing films, by Grandjean-Cano texture and by NMR studies on a deuterium-labelled isotopomer. A sufficiently high electric or magnetic field transformed the TGBA and TGBC* phases into their respective SmA and SmC* phases, the TGB structures being restored within some 20-30 minutes. Therefore values of the spontaneous polarisation and spontaneous tilt angle, when measured under a sufficiently high field, gave evidence of the properties of the SmC* phase. Temperature dependencies of relaxation frequency, dielectric strength, selective reflection and layer spacing showed anomalies at a certain temperature within the TGBC* phase range. Also, changes in textures, as well as in 2H-NMR spectra, occurred at this same temperature. These results suggest the existence of two TGBC* phases.  相似文献

Dielectric behaviour of a new ferroelectric liquid crystal (CLF08) having large spontaneous polarisation (120 nC/cm2 at 110 Hz), short pitch and high purity, is studied in the frequency range 5 Hz to 1 MHz, in the smectic C* and smectic A phases using a 7-micron-thick cell in planar alignment. Dielectric permittivity, polarisation and optical measurements are investigated that shows complex ferroelectric behaviour. These experiments evidence the Goldstone and Soft mode relaxations far from the SmC*to SmA transition. The density of dechiralization lines is observed under polarised light microscope. Its behaviour under electric field exhibits a remarkable accordance with the dielectric response. These results are discussed in connection with a possible onset of ferrielectricity in the dechiralization lines system.  相似文献

Dielectric properties of four recently formulated room temperature multi-component liquid crystalline mixtures with paraelectric (SmA*), ferroelectric (SmC*) and antiferroelectric (SmC*A) phases have been studied as a function of temperature and frequency. Under planer anchoring condition, dielectric spectroscopy revealed all the characteristic modes: low frequency PL and high frequency PH mode in SmC*A phase, Goldstone mode (GM) in SmC* phase and soft mode (SM) in SmA* phase. Dielectric behaviour has also been studied under the application of DC bias electric field. With bias electric field, we have been able to study the soft mode dielectric behaviour in the SmC* phase. An unknown high frequency mode (X-mode) with and without bias is also observed in SmC* phase. Dielectric results are explained in the light of generalised Landau theory. The mixtures show very high soft mode electroclinic coefficient in the SmA* phase in addition to fast switching in SmC*A and SmC* phases [30].  相似文献

A liquid crystal ( HZL 7/* ) containing an (S)‐2‐methylbutyl‐(S)‐lactate unit in the chiral chain, is investigated by means of 2H and 13C NMR spectroscopy in order to obtain information on its orientational order, its molecular structure and the effect of external magnetic fields on the supramolecular structure of its phases. This mesogen presents very peculiar mesomorphic properties and exhibits frustrated TGBA* and TGBC* phases in a wide temperature range up to 60 °C, as well as an additional phase transition from TGBC1* to TGBC2*. 2H NMR measurements show, for the first time, a peculiar magnetic field effect in unwinding the supramolecular structure of both the TGBA* and TGBC* phases. This effect is particularly evident at higher magnetic fields, while different behaviour is observed at lower magnetic fields. This indicates that the supramolecular structure is very sensitive to magnetic fields of the order of 1 Tesla. Moreover, the analysis of the 2H and 13C NMR spectra of HZL 7/* allow us to obtain several structural properties, such as the tilt angle of the TGBC* phases and the local orientational order parameters referred to the phenyl and biphenyl fragments. This is the first structural characterization of the frustrated phases of these complexes by means of NMR.  相似文献

A series of fluoro-substituted tolane derivatives: ( R )-1-methylheptyl 3-fluoro-4-(3-fluoro-4- n alkoxybenzoyloxy)tolane-4-carboxylates is reported. Some members of this series exhibit the phase sequence: Cr-SmC*-TGBC-TGBA-BPI-BPII-BPIII-I. The blue phases, the TGBA and TGBC phases and the SmC* phase were characterized in detail by microscopic observation, differential scanning calorimetry, helical pitch measurements, X-ray structural analysis and electro-optical study. The blue phases directly next to the TGBA phase were shown to be a new type of blue phase exhibiting smectic ordering. A commensurate TGBC phase with constant number of slabs per pitch was observed.  相似文献

Frequency- and temperature-dependent dielectric and switching parameters of a room temperature tri-component antiferroelectric liquid crystal mixture W-287 have been determined. Dielectric, optical texture and thermodynamic studies show wide room temperature range antiferroelectric SmC*a (?91.1°C to <–25°C) phase in addition to high temperature paraelectric SmA* (?2.6°C) and ferroelectric SmC* (?4.4°C) phases. The dielectric studies carried out in the frequency range of 1–35 MHz under planar anchoring condition of the molecules show five different relaxation modes appearing in the SmA*, SmC* and SmC*a phases. Using Curie–Weiss law fit, ferroelectric SmC* to paraelectric SmA* transition temperature has been found to be 91.8°C. The dielectric response of SmC*a phase exhibits unusually three relaxation modes due to collective as well as individual molecular processes in addition to phason mode in the SmC* phase and amplitudon mode in the SmA* phase. Spontaneous polarisation, switching time and rotational viscosity have also been determined. The maximum value of PS is ?300 nC/cm2, whereas viscosity is moderate. Switching time is of the order of few milli seconds.  相似文献

Thermodynamical, optical and dielectric characterisation of a material possessing ferroelectric SmC* and hexatic SmB* phases has been carried out. Phase identification has been done by miscibility studies. From the dielectric studies, a relaxation mechanism is observed in the low MHz region of the SmA* phase, which is related to the tilt fluctuation (soft mode) of the directors. In the SmC* phase, another collective relaxation mechanism has been observed in the kHz region, which is related to the phase fluctuation (Goldstone mode) of the directors. In the SmBh* phase, 2-weak relaxation modes are observed in the kHz and MHz frequency range, respectively, due to individual molecular rotations.  相似文献

Abstract

Soft mode and Goldstone mode properties have been studied for a fluorinated substance. The dielectric spectra have been measured on the planar oriented samples, in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 10 MHz. The thickness of the sample was 10 μm and two kinds of capacitors were used: (i) a low resistance EHC cell and (ii) gold coated electrodes. A bias field up to 10kV cm?1 has been applied to show the existence of both the soft mode and domain mode in the S*c phase below T c. In the S*c phase a strong Goldstone mode has been observed with a low critical frequency (v G C = 15 Hz). The high frequency side at the Goldstone mode spectrum is accompanied by a shoulder which consists of the soft mode and domain mode as well. In the vicinity of the S*A-S*C transition the dielectric parameters of the soft mode obey a Curie-Weiss law. The slope ratio is equal to ?1·62 for the inverse of dielectric increments (Δ∈?1) and ?1·73 for the critical frequencies (v c) obtained by using gold electrodes. The respective values received for the EHC cell are ?4·14 and ?2·1. The dielectric parameters of the domain mode have been obtained versus temperature and bias field. We can qualitatively show that a high frequency molecular relaxation is present in the S*A and S*C phases as the high frequency limit of dielectric permittivity is distinctly higher than the refractive index squared.  相似文献

We have investigated the collective fluctuation in the chiral smectic phases of main-chain polyesters having a mesogenic p,p'-dibenzoate unit via dielectric and dynamic electrooptical measurements. A relaxation due to the Goldstone mode was observed at several tens of Hz in the chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase in both measurements, where another relaxation associated with the soft mode was also confirmed around the SmA-SmC* phase transition temperature. Although the mesogens are linked together in a main-chain liquid crystalline polymer, the observed soft mode is associated with the tilt fluctuation of the average direction of the mesogens.  相似文献

The complex dielectric permittivity has been measured for a ferroelectric liquid crystal in the range 102-109Hz. Six different relaxations have been obtained and characterized: soft mode (SmA* and SmC* phases), Goldstone mode (SmC* phase), rotation around molecular long axis, rotation around molecular short axis, ferroelectric domain mode (SmC* phase) and an internal motion associated with a polar group. Strengths and frequencies of these modes have been obtained for the different phases for different bias fields. Using these results together with spontaneous polarization and molecular tilt measurements we have also obtained the rotational viscosities associated with the soft mode and the Goldstone mode. We explain the results in the light of the so-called Landau extended model, concluding that the biquadratic coupling between polarization and tilt is quite important with regard to the bilinear coupling. This fact has been used to explain the noticeable increase of the activation energy of the frequency of the mode related to the rotation around the molecular long axis at the SmA*-SmC* phase transition.  相似文献

The characteristic dielectric behaviour of ferroelectric liquid crystals with a large spontaneous polarization has been studied as functions of the D.C. bias field, frequency, cell thickness and applied pressure. Under the condition in which the contribution of the Goldstone mode is suppressed, a sharp peak in the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant is clearly observed at the transition between SA and S*C phases TSC*sA. The relaxation of the soft mode is observed both in the SA and S*C phases by eliminating the contribution of the Goldstone mode under a D.C. bias field. Another relaxation is also observed in the S*C phase around several kHz in addition to that of the soft mode and the Goldstone mode. The pressure effect on the soft mode was also studied.  相似文献

A new phase sequence: twist grain boundary smectic C (TGBC) to smectic blue phases (BPSm) is observed in a chiral compound (S)- or (R)-1-methyloctyl 3'-fluoro-4'-(3-fluoro-4-hexadecyloxybenzoyloxy)tolane-4-carboxylate. It is the first time that a TGBC phase has been found to occur under smectic blue phases in the absence of the twist grain boundary smectic A (TGBA) phase. These phases are characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering.  相似文献
