Three structural variants of azo substituted achiral bent-core compounds are reported. Here, the effect of symmetrical and non-symmetrical arms at 1,3-positions of the central phenyl ring on the mesogenic properties of the resulting bent-core azo compounds is studied. The structures of all the compounds synthesised are confirmed by the organic spectroscopic methods. The liquid crystalline properties are investigated using polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction studies. It was found that the non-symmetrical molecules are more conducive to mesomorphism than the symmetrical ones. We observed B1 (Colr), B2 (SmCAPA) and B7 mesophases in these compounds. The B7 mesophase was found to have a modulated layer structure. Interestingly, a reversible field-induced transition from the B7-like structure to the racemic SmCAPF was also observed. We also report the photo-induced studies in the B7 mesophase and make a comparison of these results with those obtained in a B2 mesophase. From our studies, we observed that these effects are more profound in the case of B7 mesophase when compared to the B2 mesophase in such systems.  相似文献

We report the synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a homologous series (10a–10g) of bent-core molecules constructed through covalent linkage of structurally non-symmetrical rod-like mesogens connected with a 1, 3-phenylene unit. The study of homologous series underlines the importance of length and nature of terminal chains. The homologues of shorter chains show a typical non-switchable rectangular columnar B1 phase, while the switchable lamellar (B2) phase is induced on moving to higher homologues. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate the presence of B1 and B2 mesophases. Polarised optical microscopy investigations under electric field in the B2 phases revealed the existence of anticlinic antiferroelectric texture. The measured spontaneous polarisation value in one of the compounds is 936 nC cm?2, a high polarisation value in bent-core liquid crystals.  相似文献

Isoxazole-based bent-core liquid crystals (LCs) derived from naturally occurring curcumin were synthesised and their LC properties were investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction techniques. Five compounds, including a branched alkyl chain derivative, were prepared and characterised. These derivatives exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. While lower homologues display wide-temperature-range nematic phase, a longer-chain derivative 3d shows smectic C phase in addition to the nematic phase. The bent angle in these compounds is in between calamitic LCs and banana LCs. Therefore, the molecules escape from polar order packing observed in typical bent-core LCs. Increasing the length of alkyl chain reduces both melting and isotropic temperatures in the series. However, the compound with branched alkyl chains exhibits significant reduction in the nematic-isotropic temperature only. Detailed XRD experiments confirm the presence of the N phase in the lower homologues and SmC phase in a higher homologue.  相似文献

The mesophase behaviour of binary mixtures of bent-core and calamitic liquid crystals is presented. The nematogenic 4,6-dichloro-1,3-phenylene bis[4′-(10-undecen-1-yloxy)-1,1′-biphenyl-4-carboxylate] (I) was the banana-shaped component. As the calamitic compound ethyl 4′-(9-decen-1-yloxy)-1,1′-biphenyl-4-carboxylate (II), similar to one arm of the bent-core molecule, was used which exhibits smectic phases in a wide temperature range. A total of six mixtures with different compositions were prepared and studied by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction on non-oriented samples. In the mixtures, a nematic phase is not concomitant with smectic A phase, and the temperature range of both phases highly depends on the concentration of the comprising compounds. Lowered melting temperatures have been observed for all mixtures with respect to that of the pure compounds. Unforeseen finding is the induction of a monotropic SmC phase in mixtures with lowest concentration of the bent-core compound. Semi-empirical quantum-chemical calculations have also been performed. Based on the calculated molecular conformation, as well as on collected X-ray diffraction data, a model for a possible self-assembly of the banana-shaped and calamitic compounds is proposed.  相似文献

The phase ordering process of bent-core mesogenic molecules is qualitatively different from that observed for conventional rod-like (calamitic) mesogens. Fractal dimensional analysis can be employed to characterize the phase ordering process of these unconventional mesogens. The phase transition between the isotropic melt and the liquid crystalline 'B7' phase of a 'banana-molecule' material has been investigated in terms of fractal growth patterns, with respect to sample thickness and rate of temperature change. It is shown, that there is a crossover from confinement dominated phase growth to volume behaviour, while the cooling rate has no influence on the dimension of the fractal patterns observed during the phase ordering process.  相似文献

Four new bent-core mesogens containing biphenyl moieties are reported. All these, except the first homologue, exhibit B7 and B4 banana phases, both of which are known to have a helical structure. The B7 to B4 phase transition is very rare, this being perhaps only the second report of the observation of such a phase sequence. The first homologue exhibits only one mesophase X1 with textural features reminiscent of the B1 phase. All the compounds synthesized are characterized by spectral data. The mesophases exhibited by these compounds are characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray studies.  相似文献

Four new series of achiral bent-core compounds and two biphenyl derivatives of them have been synthesised and their mesomorphic properties are studied. These mesogens are salicylaldimine derivatives, designed with an aim to study the effect of salicylaldimine group and lateral substituents, viz., ?F and ?Cl at different locations of the molecular structure, on the mesomorphic properties. The newly synthesised compounds are characterised using organic spectroscopy and elemental analysis (EA). The liquid crystalline properties of these compounds are studied using polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and electro-optical studies. They are found to exhibit dark conglomerate (DC) and B2 mesophases. The DC phases are of sponge and HNC type, and the B2 is SmCaPA in nature. The compounds, wherein the salicylaldimine group is present at the centre of the bent-core, mainly exhibit DC mesophases and when this group is present in one of the wings of the bent-core molecule, the compounds tend to show only a B2 mesophase, irrespective of the nature of lateral substituents. Many of the DC liquid crystals synthesised here retained the chirality even in their crystalline states which are confirmed by the circular dichroism spectroscopic studies.  相似文献

A series of bent-core V-shaped mesogens consisting of salicylaldimine mesogenic segments have been synthesized and their mesomorphic behaviour characterized. In an attempt to understand structure–property relationships, the lengths of the terminal alkoxy chains have been varied from C2 to C12, C16 and C18, resulting in 13 new bent-core V-shaped molecules. The thermal behaviour of these new compounds has been investigated by optical microscopy, calorimetry and X-ray diffraction studies. In general the compounds show conventional mesophases similar to those shown by calamitic LCs. The materials exhibit good thermal stability, even though their melting and clearing transition temperatures are high as a result of the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the H-atom of the hydroxyl group and the N-atom of the imine functionality. The phase appearing in the first member of the series with ethoxy chains is a nematic, while the C3 to C6 derivatives exhibit a smectic A phase as well as a nematic phase. The higher homologues, C7 to C12, C16 and C18, show only the smectic A phase. X-ray studies reveal that the SmA phase has a partially bilayer (interdigitated) structure. Remarkably, in some cases, the smectic A phase supercools well below room temperature. It is apparent from our studies that increasing the length of the alkoxy chains promotes smectic behaviour, in agreement with the general observation made for such bent-core molecules.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The splay, twist and bend elastic constants (K11, K22 and K33) have been measured as a function of temperature in bent-core/calamitic mixtures based on three different calamitic materials (5CB, 8CB and ZLI1132) and two bent-core dopants. The behaviour of the splay and bend constants are as expected; a reduction in K33 of ~20%, in line with predictions from mixing rules and other observations. Interestingly, no change is seen in the splay constant, K11 of the calamitic hosts. Surprisingly though, the twist elastic constant exhibits a reduction of 30 – 40% in all mixtures across the nematic range, an effect not previously reported and much larger than mixing rules can explain. The elastic behaviour is universal in our mixtures. We explain part of the reduction in the twist deformation by considering the influence of the chiral conformer fluctuations of the bent-core molecules on the twist elastic constants of the mixtures. However, the dramatic reduction can only be fully explained by also including contributions from chiral conformer fluctuations of the calamitic host, a form of chiral amplification.  相似文献

Aqueous solutions of 7,7'-disodiumcromoglycate (7,7'-DSCG) form a variety of mesophases, whose natures depend on concentration and temperature. We have used optical microscopy, N.M.R. (of 2H, 17O and 23Na) and X-ray techniques to construct a phase diagram for this system and to characterize the various mesophases. In the concentration range 3 to 25 wt % 7,7'-DSCG four different mesophases are found. On cooling the isotropic solution an opaque gel phase is first obtained, followed on further cooling by a birefringent glassy liquid. At concentrations below 14wt% it is nematic, while at higher concentrations it appears to be a different, more ordered, phase. At lower temperatures a hexagonal phase is formed which finally solidifies on cooling to - 15°C. The N.M.R. and X-ray characteristics of these mesophases are discussed.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of a new series of calamitic liquid crystals containing 4-H-benzopyran-4-one (chromone) within the central core is reported. The first homologue in the series display SmA phase (8a), the homologues (8be) exhibit SmA and SmC mesophases and the homologues (8fh) exhibit only a SmC mesophase.  相似文献

The phase diagram of the nematic mesophase present in the tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide/sodium bromide/water ternary system was determined. A calamitic nematic mesophase (NC) was observed which extends to very high concentrations of electrolyte. The order parameters of the surfactant head group in the mesophases were studied by the NMR quadrupolar splitting of the deuterated surfactant. On increasing the temperature of nematic mesophases with low electrolyte concentrations, a phase separation occurs with the formation of a more highly ordered hexagonal phase and an isotropic phase. Diffusion measurements of the isotropic micellar solution by the NMR PFG method were used to estimate hydrodynamic radii at low surfactant concentrations and to study micelle diffusion as the concentration of the surfactant was increased to the liquid crystalline region. At higher surfactant concentrations, the diffusion coefficient reached a limiting value. The calamitic nematic mesophase in this surfactant/electrolyte/water system appears to be formed by long wormlike micelles.  相似文献

A new banana-shaped achiral molecule, 1,3-phenylene bis[4-(3-chloro-4-n-octyloxyphenyliminomethyl)benzoate] (PBCOB) has been synthesized, and its ferroelectric properties and homeotropic alignment investigated. The presence of a lateral chloro-substituent in the Schiff 's base moiety prevents the regular stacking of molecules and results in lowering the transition temperature and the degree of crystallinity of the switchable banana phase. Their smectic mesophases, including a switchable banana phase B7, were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray scattering and polarizing optical microscopy. Both the left- and right-handed helical domains are spontaneously formed upon cooling from the isotropic liquid to the switchable banana phase B7. By X-ray study, the smectic phases showed a layer spacing of 38.1 Å, compatible with the end-to-end distance of the molecule with a bent conformation. Significantly, the smectic B7 phase exhibited a periodicity of 292 Å that corresponds to a helical structure with periodicity about 7.5 times 38.1 Å. The spontaneous polarization for PBCOB is about 50 nCcm-2 and shows a temperature dependence. The ferroelectric lyomesophase of PBCOB showed a ferroelectric electro-optical switching range extending more than 50°C, switchable at room temperature.  相似文献

A new series of asymmetric bent-core compounds were synthesised using azo linkages with equal as well as unequal terminal alkyl chains and their photo and electrical switching properties investigated. The mesomorphic properties were characterised using polarised optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The lower homologues of the series of compounds show a B1 phase whereas higher homologues exhibit a B2 phase. The B2 phase shows an anticlinic-antiferroelectric switching behaviour during electro-optic measurements. The photo-switching properties of the azobenzene containing bent-core molecules were investigated using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The trans to cis photo isomerisation was observed at 25 s whereas reverse processes took 14 h in chloroform.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The discovery of the oblique chiral (or, the twist-bend, NTB) nematic phase predicted for bent-core mesogens has engendered much interest due to its unique structure and physical properties, and the possibility of use in the next generation of fast electro-optic technology. Bimesogenic calamitic as well as bent-core mesogens are found to form the NTB phase. Here, we report direct measurements of the temperature dependence of the conical tilt and the evidence of volcano-like orientational distribution of molecules in the NTB phase. Optical and x-ray scattering investigations of two single-component calamitic bimesogens and their mixtures show that, while the Maier–Saupe orientational distribution function (ODF) is valid for the higher temperature nematic phase, a generalised expansion in terms of even Legendre functions is needed for the NTB phase. Temperature dependence of the ODFs and the order parameters 〈P2(cosβ)〉, 〈P4(cosβ)〉, and 〈P6(cosβ)〉 has been measured in both phases. The parameters 〈P2(cosβ)〉 and 〈P4(cosβ)〉 increase/decrease in the N/NTB phase with decreasing temperature, while 〈P6(cosβ)〉 remains vanishingly small for all samples. The value of 〈P4(cosβ)〉 becomes negative in the NTB phase confirming a conical distribution of molecules as they follow a helical trajectory keeping the local director tilted at an angle α wrt the macroscopic director. The heliconical tilt calculated from ODFs, exhibits a power law behaviour with temperature, vanishing at the transition to the N phase.  相似文献

We prepared some taper-shaped liquid-crystalline trimers in which two phenylpyrimidine units and a 1,4-diphenyl-2,3-difluorobenzene unit are connected to 2,4-dihdroxy benzoic acid via flexible spacers. We then investigated their liquid-crystalline properties using polarised optical microscopy, differential scanning microscopy and X-ray diffraction. 6-[4–(5-Octylpyrimidin-2-yl)phenyloxy]hexyl 2-{7-{4-[4–(4-hexylphenyl)-2,3-difluorophenyl]phenyloxy}heptanoyloxy}-4-{6-[4–(5-octylpyrimidin-2-yl)phenyloxy]hexyloxy}benzoate (1) was found to exhibit a phase sequence of isotropic liquid – nematic – intercalated smectic A – intercalated anticlinic smectic C – modulated smectic C. The structure–property relation in the taper-shaped trimers reveals that the modulated phase is induced by competition between an intercalated structure stabilised by dipole–dipole interaction and a monolayer structure by packing entropy effects. Conformational change of compound 1 induced by intermolecular interactions plays an important role in the phase transition behaviour.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Spontaneous or induced chiral symmetry breaking in achiral systems is unusual and understanding the origin of such a phenomenon has been an important area of research for several years. The optically isotropic mesophases exhibited by unconventional liquid crystals are one of the most interesting systems to investigate spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in liquid crystal mesophases formed by achiral moieties. The dark conglomerate (DC) phases are one such optically isotropic family of phases. In this paper, a detailed account of the tendency of bent-core mesogens to form a variety of polar smectic phases, the formation of DC phases due to layers deformations and the general optical, electrical, physical properties of the DC phases are given. An example of a DC phase which exhibit distinct electro-optic properties is described with the nature of dynamics of the response and physical reasons responsible for such behaviour. The challenges and prospects of the DC phases are discussed for their potential applications in novel devices.  相似文献

The title compound, 2,7-bis(4-pentylphenyl)-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluorene, is a new mesogenic compound containing the fluorene moiety. It exhibits a monotropic nematic liquid crystalline behaviour, with isotropisation temperature of 53°C. The compound is also polymorphic in the solid state, with one crystal phase melting at 103°C and another one melting at 71°C. The crystal and molecular structure of the high melting solid phase have been determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystals are monoclinic, with cell dimensions a = 16.649(6) Å, b = 8.305(3) Å, c = 24.598(7) Å, β = 111.60(2)?, space group P21/c and four molecules in the unit cell. Refinement leads to R = 0.0558. The two terminal alkyl chains and one phenyl ring are disordered over two split positions. The imbricated molecular packing observed in the solid state seems to resemble that of the nematic phase that is formed upon cooling the melt.  相似文献

Here, we report four new homologous series of azo-functionalised achiral bent-core compounds. The paper deals with the design, synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of four new homologous series of photochromic materials. In this study, we have investigated the effect of the presence of –N=N– linkage at different locations of the molecular architecture, on the mesomorphic properties. The molecular structures of all the newly synthesised compounds are established using the organic spectroscopic methods. The liquid crystalline properties are investigated using polarising optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction and electro-optical studies. They exhibit B1 (colr) and B2 (SmCAPA) mesophases. We find that the presence of the –N=N– linkage at different locations in the molecular architecture does not seem to have much effect on the mesogenic behaviour of such compounds. However, we clearly see a profound effect of the location of the –N=N– linkage on the photo-induced electro-optical properties of these compounds.  相似文献

In an effort to synthesise thermally stable bent-core nematogens with fairly low transition temperatures and wide nematic mesophase range, we have synthesised five new series of azo-substituted bent-core compounds without Schiff’s base unit. Here, we studied the effect of different lateral substituents (–CH3 and –Cl), at two different positions in one of the arms, on the mesogenic properties. We found that such variation in the molecular architecture has a clear-cut impact on the transition temperatures as well as the liquid crystalline properties. The mesogenic properties of these compounds were studied using polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The exact nature of different mesophases is investigated using X-ray diffraction studies. The results obtained indicated the presence of smectic nano clusters in the nematic mesophases of these compounds. We observed domains of opposite handedness in these nematic phases. The unusual properties of these mesophases were investigated by electro-optical studies. The electro-convection pattern study showed that these nematic mesophases are of negative dielectric anisotropic in nature. The compounds synthesised here exhibit photo-switching both in solution and in their nematic mesophases, a property that can be exploited for practical applications.  相似文献
