Polymer films with a dispersed liquid crystal were prepared by photopolymerization of (meth)acrylic monomers. The electrooptical properties of these films were studied. The influence exerted by the composition of the monomer mixture, cross-linking agents, and chain-transfer agent on the liquid crystal drop size and on the transmission of the polymer-liquid crystal films was examined.  相似文献

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were prepared by photopolymerization of liquid crystal (LC)/polymerizable monomers/photoinitiator composites. The effects of the structures of the polymerizable monomers on the electro‐optical properties of PDLC films were investigated. It was found that the length of the molecular chain and the rigidity and flexibility of molecules influenced the structure of the polymer network in the PDLC films somewhat, and then affected the electro‐optical properties of the composites accordingly. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films containing a series of monomers with different alkyl chain lengths were prepared by nucleophile-initiated thiol-ene click reaction. The effect of alkyl chain length of monomers, dye and temperature on electro-optical properties of PDLC films was investigated. It was found that the alkyl chain length and polymerisation rate of monomers together determine the size of liquid crystal (LC) droplets, thus affecting the electro-optical properties of PDLC. In addition, the type and content of dyes could be optimised to obtain PDLC materials with better comprehensive properties for display.  相似文献

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were prepared by photochemical polymerisation with a series of (meth)acrylate monomers. The effects of monomer structure on the morphology of polymer networks in the PDLC films were studied. The acrylate monomers without sidegroup chain formed uniform polymer networks. The methacrylate monomers with methyl as their sidegroup chains formed lace-like networks. The size of the LC droplets increased with increasing the length of the flexible chain of both methacrylate and acrylate monomers. Meanwhile, the effects of the morphology of the polymer network on the electro-optical properties of PDLC films were also investigated.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this paper, polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films based on epoxy-mercaptan system were prepared by thermal-initiated polymerization. The effects of the liquid crystal (LC) content, the proportion and the functionality of epoxy monomers on the polymer structures and electro-optical properties of the as-made PDLC films were investigated systematically. It was found that the morphologies of the polymer matrix can be altered from polymer meshes to polymer balls by increasing the LC content as well as the functionality of epoxy monomers. Accordingly, the electro-optical properties could be regulated by the morphologies of polymer networks. Especially, the as-made PDLC films with homogeneous porous structures exhibited the optimal electro-optical properties. Consequently, this work offers a meaningful approach to control the microstructures and optimize the electro-optical properties of PDLC films, which indeed can form a wonderful footstone for the wide application of PDLC.  相似文献

In this paper, polymer‐dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films consisting of liquid crystal (LC)/monomers/indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles with good near‐infrared absorption property had been fabricated, and the influence of the ITO nanoparticles modified with 3‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH570) on the PDLC films was systematically studied. First, different liquid crystal content was studied to obtain PDLC films with good electro‐optical properties. And then, various weight ratio of ITO nanoparticles was added to samples. While the content of ITO nanoparticles was increased, the saturation voltage increased and the CR decreased. Though the electro‐optical properties of PDLC samples reduced with the addition ITO nanoparticles, the near‐infrared absorption property of films was enhanced.  相似文献

Summary: Electro-optical properties of Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) films doped with different nanoparticles (NPs), as well as optical and morphological properties of liquid crystal/NP mixtures have been investigated. PDLC films were prepared by UV irradiation of thiol-ene monomers and liquid crystal E7 in the presence of a small amount (0.5 and 1 wt.%) of nanoparticles. The presence of NP strongly influence the properties of liquid crystal/NP mixtures. In particular, adding nanoparticles results in a decrease of the glass and nematic-isotropic transition temperatures of the LC, suggesting that strong interactions occur between LC and nanoparticles.  相似文献

Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films with the size gradient of the LC droplets were prepared based on the epoxy/acrylate hybrid polymer matrix. The ultraviolet (UV) intensity gradient was induced by the UV-absorbing dye over the thickness of the samples. Taking advantage of the difference between the epoxy monomers and acrylate monomers in polymerisation rates and the UV intensity gradient, the gradient distribution of the LC droplet size was formed in PDLC films. The effect of the size gradient of the LC droplets on the electro-optical and the light-scattering properties of PDLC films was investigated. The results showed that due to the size gradient distribution of the LC droplets, PDLC films could exhibit the strong light scattering in the UV-visible-near infrared (VIS-NIR) region. Consequently, it provides a potential approach for modulating NIR light transmittance.  相似文献

In this paper, polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films which based on the acrylate and the thiol monomers were first prepared by ultraviolet-initiated polymerisation. The electro-optical properties and morphologies of the PDLC films were systematically investigated. The functionality of thiol monomers and their feed ratio showed great influence on the properties of the fabricated PDLC films because of the existence of competition between thiol–acrylate reaction and acrylate monomer polymerisation reaction. This made the polymer network and electro-optical properties of the PDLC films easily tunable by the introduction of the thiol monomers. When added four-functional thiol monomer PETMP with appropriate concentration into the PDLC system, lower driven voltage and higher contrast ratio were achieved.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Nucleophile-initiated thiol-ene click reaction is a highly novel and efficient method of preparing polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films. The effects of thiol monomers on the electro-optical properties of PDLC films prepared by nucleophile-initiated thiol-ene click reaction were investigated in this work. The thiol monomers were dithiol, trithiol, tetrathiol or their mixture. It was found that the increase of functionality could lead to the increase of threshold voltage and saturation voltage and the decrease of off-state transmittance. The influence of reaction temperature was also investigated. The results indicated that functionality and reaction temperature had combined effects on the electro-optical properties of PDLC films.  相似文献

The effects of fluorinated acrylate monomers on the electro-optical and morphological properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films are reported. The partial fluorination of host polymer matrices resulted in improved optical properties and better defined morphologies. An enhancement in contrast ratio was observed for fluorinated systems containing trifluoroethyl acrylate (TFEA) and hexafluoroisopropyl acrylate (HFIPA). Conversely, the incorporation of methyl acrylate (MA), a chemically similar non-fluorinated acrylate, resulted in no appreciable change in contrast ratio and an increase in relaxation time. Scanning electron microscopy morphological studies were conducted to understand further the influence of fluorinated monomers in PDLC systems.  相似文献

Reverse-mode operation films can be achieved with polymer dispersed liquid crystals by many methods. One method consists in the use of either rough or polyimide treated supports in order to induce homeotropic alignment of the initial mixture that will separate in liquid crystal and polymer rich phases. The major disadvantage is the need for mesogenic monomers to keep a good alignment of the liquid crystal after the polymerization process. In this paper we present results concerning the use of an anisometric, non-mesogenic, tailor-made monomer for the preparation of excellent reverse-mode polymer dispersed liquid crystal shutters cast on rough surfaces. The combined use of rough surfaces and non-mesogenic monomers allows us to exceed earlier limits in physical and chemical properties, cost, and device dimensions by the use of a wider class of monomer molecules.  相似文献

We demonstrated a relatively simple and effective method to fabricate a periodically isolated polymer wall of blue-phase liquid crystal Fresnel lens (BPLCFL) by employing a single-masking process of the ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, leading to excellent photopolymerisation-induced phase separation between blue -phase liquid crystal (BPLC) molecules and UV-curable monomers. Nevertheless, some uncured monomers would inherently reside in the BPLC-rich area and slightly inhibit the BPLC molecules realigned under the external electric field. To enhance the optical properties of the polymer-wall BPLCFL considerably, a novel technique for fabricating a pure BPLC zone is proposed that successfully expels the residual monomers from the BPLC volume using a thermal annealing process. Experimental results show that the maximum diffraction efficiency reaches ~36%, which approaches the theoretical limit of ~41%. Consequently, the annealing technique to purify phase-separated composite films has a strong potential to construct the BPLCFL in light of polarisation-free applications.  相似文献

In this work, the thiol‐ene click reaction is employed to fabricate polymer‐dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films by photoinitiated polymerization. The PDLC films are prepared by systematic variation of key conditions: variety and content of ‐ene monomer, liquid crystal (LC) content, curing time, and curing light intensity. We find that both the morphologies and electro‐optic properties of these films are adjustable. When increasing the length of alkyl main chain of ‐ene monomers, the driving voltages reduce, but in turn, the contrast ratio decreases. Increasing ‐ene monomer content raises the driving voltages as well as the response time, and the increase of LC content lowers the driving voltages but has a negative effect on the contrast ratio. The changes to the curing conditions (both curing time and UV light intensity) can be used to modify the driving voltages, response time, and contrast ratios of PDLC films. These comparative studies will elucidate new insights in commercial applications of intelligent PDLC films.  相似文献

A number of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films based on dimethacrylate monomers were synthesised by polymer-induced phase separation (PIPS) using polyethylene glycol p-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)-phenyl ether (TX-100) as an additive up to total solution weight of 10% aiming to modify the initial anchorage force of the liquid crystal (LC) molecules to the polymeric matrix. The effects of the addition of this additive to the PDLC films were studied resorting to electro-optical studies. Using a fitting model, several parameters were correlated such as the permanent memory effect (PME), the voltage required to achieve 90% of maximum transmittance (E90), the average elastic constant (K) and the rotational viscosity of the director (γ). The use of TX-100 results on an increase on the PME and γ, and decrease on the E90 and K.  相似文献

Polymer‐dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) films were prepared from ultraviolet (UV) irradiation‐induced polymerization of the photopolymerizable monomers in photopolymerizable monomers/nematic liquid crystal (LC) mixtures. The effects of the composition of the mixtures, the curing temperature, and the UV light intensity on the microstructure of the polymer network in the PDLC films were investigated. Furthermore, the effects of the microstructures on the light scattering properties of the PDLC films in the wavelength region of 300–2500 nm were studied experimentally and theoretically based on the combination of three kinds of classical light scattering theories: the Rayleigh‐Gans (RG) approach, the anomalous diffraction (AD) approach, and the geometrical optics (GO) approach. It was found that the sizes of LC domain in PDLC films increased with the increase of the LC content as well as the decrease of the UV curing intensity, while increased at first and then decreased with the increase of the curing temperature. Moreover, smaller LC domain sizes could exhibit strong scattering properties in a smaller VIS wavelength region and the transmittance in NIR region (especially in the wavelength range of 1300–2500 nm) obviously decreased with the increasing sizes of LC domain. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new series of liquid crystalline styrene-based monomers is described. These monomers are prepared by the DCC-mediated esterification reaction between 4-[11-(4-vinylphenoxy)undecyloxy]benzoic acid and a range of phenols chosen due to their proven utility in the synthesis of liquid crystals. Most members of the series display thermally stable (enantiotropic) nematic phases, although a few give only monotropic nematic phases. By incorporating the (S)-2-methylbutyl side chain, monomers that exhibit the chiral nematic phase can be obtained. Predictably, monomers derived from phenols containing an additional ring as substituent (e.g. 4-cyano-4'-hydroxybiphenyl) display relatively high transition temperatures. In contrast, monomers derived from simple 4-n-alkylphenols possess a nematic phase, which is accessible at moderate temperatures. In addition, a eutectic mixture derived from these monomers has a melting point only just above room temperature, which is an advantage for the fabrication of robust films via the in situ photopolymerization process. Standard free radical polymerization of a number of these monomers provides side chain liquid crystal polymers, SCLCPs, with mesophases that are stable over a wide temperature range. For a homologous series of SCLCPs containing a terminal n-alkyl chain on the mesogenic group, an unexpected but distinct odd-even effect is observed.  相似文献
