Two types of smectic A and smectic C phases, respectively, have been proved by X-ray and DSC methods for compounds that are terminal non-polar, but consist of tuning-fork shaped molecules. The structural models of the phases are discussed on the basis of steric interaction and of a dense packing. The X-ray patterns of oriented samples point to an undulation of the smectic layers in the case of the smectic A and smectic B phase.  相似文献

To elucidate induced smectic A and smectic B phases in binary nematic liquid crystal mixtures, a generalized thermodynamic model has been developed in the framework of a combined Flory-Huggins free energy for isotropic mixing, Maier-Saupe free energy for orientational ordering, McMillan free energy for smectic ordering, Chandrasekhar-Clark free energy for hexagonal ordering, and phase field free energy for crystal solidification. Although nematic constituents have no smectic phase, the complexation between these constituent liquid crystal molecules in their mixture resulted in a more stable ordered phase such as smectic A or B phases. Various phase transitions of crystal-smectic, smectic-nematic, and nematic-isotropic phases have been determined by minimizing the above combined free energies with respect to each order parameter of these mesophases. By changing the strengths of anisotropic interaction and hexagonal interaction parameters, the present model captures the induced smectic A or smectic B phases of the binary nematic mixtures. Of particular importance is the fact that the calculated phase diagrams show remarkable agreement with the experimental phase diagrams of binary nematic liquid crystal mixtures involving induced smectic A or induced smectic B phase.  相似文献

Two series of binary mixtures composed of bent shaped and rod like molecules are reported. The first star shaped bent core molecules were synthesized and used as a component of binary mixtures. The chiral rod like compounds having commensurable length with the arms of the bent core compounds have been chosen for these mixtures. The resulted compositions show various thermotropic liquid crystalline phases that are characteristic to both types of liquid crystalline materials. In case of mixing the rod like molecules to the bent core compound the B2, B7 and induced B1 phases have been observed. While using the star-shaped bent core and chiral rod like compounds in mixture, the paraelectric smectic A, ferroelectric smectic C* and orthogonal hexatic smectic B phases were preferred. The appearing mesophases were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods.  相似文献

The rearrangement of allyl p-dimethylaminobenzenesulphonate (ASE) to form a zwitterionic product has already been recognized as an effective probe for the study of reactivity within the smectic B phase [4, 5, 19]. We have used deuterium NMR, linear dichroism and X-ray diffraction techniques to investigate the phase diagram of the ASE-OS35 reaction system. The partitioning of the reactant molecules between coexisting smectic, nematic and/or isotropic phases and the structural organization of the smectic catalytic host at different temperatures and reactant guest concentrations have been characterized. On the basis of these measurements, a model of ASE reactivity in smectic solvents has been developed. The reaction takes place provided that coexisting isotropic or nematic phases are present to act as a reservoir for the ASE reactant molecules prior to their entering the smectic phase; they then react and leave the smectic phase as a zwitterionic product. The analogy between this model of reactivity within smectic phases and the Michaelis-Menten enzyme processes is discussed. This relationship opens up the intriguing possibility of designing new experiments with which to investigate further liquid crystalline models of enzyme catalysis.  相似文献

A wide range of NPT simulations of a bead necklace liquid crystal model in the crystal B, smectic B, smectic A, and nematic phases have been performed. Systems with up to 21 600 molecules have been studied to observe the behavior of slowly decaying spatial correlation functions. The pair correlation function and its in-plane restriction are consistent with a crystalline phase made of independent two-dimensional crystalline layers. Smectic B phase is studied by the bond orientational pair correlation functions g(6) and its extension g(6ext). The first reaches a constant value, which seems to rule out a classical hexatic phase. The latter shows a power-law decay within the layers: its typical decay exponent (eta(6ext)) is evaluated. Relationships between multiple harmonics of the C(6n) order parameter have been evaluated through the whole range of existence of B phases (crystalline and smectic): the extension to the crystalline phase holds and provides an excellent fit of the simulation data.  相似文献

Abstract

Detailed dielectric permittivity and relaxation investigations have been performed on compounds having different liquid-crystalline phases. At the smectic B–smectic A as well as the smectic G–smectic B transitions definite jumps were found in the dielectric relaxation times associated with rotation of the molecules around their short axis. For the interpretation of the large jumps in the relaxation times the change of the phonon spectra at the two dimensional crystal-two dimensional liquid phase transition was assumed. To verify this idea an inelastic neutron scattering study was performed. The measurements have proved the good orientation of the smectic A and smectic B phases. The values of the layer spacing, and the appearance of libron peaks for the smectic B phase at different momentum transfer were determined.  相似文献

A mesogenic monomer di-[6-(4-methoxy-4′-biphenyloxy) hexyl]-2-methylene butane-1,4-dioate, has been copolymerized with non-mesogen monomers, one racemic and one optically pure, with a view to examining the potential for using these to induce chiral liquid crystal line phases in the copolymer. This proved to be ineffective, with the copolymer exhibiting only smectic A or smectic B phases. Transition temperature–copolymer composition diagrams have been constructed for both copolymer series and their features have been contrasted. Monomer reactivity ratios have been derived for both copolymer systems.  相似文献

The structures of the highly ordered liquid crystalline smectic phases of N-pentyl-N'-(p-pentyloxyphenyl)piperazine are identified using X-ray diffraction methods. For this compound a phase sequence hexagonal smectic B (SB)-orthofrhombic crystalline smectic H (CH)-monoclinic crystalline smectic H (CH) is observed for the first time. The changes in structural symmetry at the phase transitions are discussed.  相似文献

Optical studies of smectic phases have been performed in homogeneously oriented samples of chiral 4-(2'-methylbutyl) phenyl-4'-n-octylbiphenyl-4-carboxylate (CE8). The helix structure has been found in smectic phases C, I and J, but not in the smectic G phase. Two chiral phases have been found between SI* and SG phases. Up to now one of them has not been observed. The pitch of the helix has been measured in all of the twisted smectic phases, including the SJ* phase. The existence of the helix in this phase suggests that the correlations between smectic layers are not very strong.  相似文献

Small‐angle bent‐core liquid‐crystalline (LC) molecules based on a 1,2‐bis(phenylethynyl)benzene central core have been synthesized that form banana smectic phases with a ferroelectric B7–antiferroelectric B2 phase sequence upon cooling. The formation of polar, switchable ferro‐/antiferroelectric banana phases indicates that, despite the low core bend angle of approximately 60°, banana smectic phases are still formed with the bend direction parallel to the layer. This study offers significant evidence that shows bent‐core molecules with a 60° bend angle can form the well‐known B2 and B7 banana phases. Consequently, it may lead to the preparation of a wide variety of novel bent molecules with low bend angles that spontaneously form an LC phase with both polarization and chirality.  相似文献

Abstract

Seven new derivatives of 4-octyloxy-N-(4-substituted benzylidene) aniline have been synthesized. 4-Trifluoromethyl and 4-trifluoromethoxy derivatives exhibit stable smectic B and A phases, respectively, while both the 4-methyl and 4-methoxy derivatives have monotropic nematic phases. Fundamental liquid crystalline properties such as entropies of the phase transitions, microscopic textures, smectic layer spacings, orientational order parameters, and molecular dipole moments were determined. It has been revealed that moderately polar nature of these mesogens act to stabilizing monolayer smectic states. The smectic A phase of 4-trifluoromethoxy derivative exhibit very high orientational order. None of the disubstituted compounds, 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl), 3,5-dimethyl, and 3,5-dimethoxy derivatives were mesogenic. The effect of terminal trifluoromethylation on the liquid crystalline properties is discussed.  相似文献

Searching for compounds which could be useful as modifiers of smectic C mixtures, we have synthesized four homologous series of three ring dioxanes, 2BBD, 5BBD, 2CBD, and 5CBD. Their phase transition temperatures and enthalpies were measured and their liquid crystal phases identified. Compounds belonging to series n-BBD form smectic Bcr phases for shorter alkyl chains, and smectic Bcr and A phases, for longer chains. Compounds belonging to the n-CBD series exhibit the smectic A phase, but those with longer alkyl chains have exclusively smectic B phases and those with short tails have other low temperature, highly ordered smectic phases. The compounds were added to smectic C mixture and it was found that some can be useful as dopants. Compounds with longer alkyl tails in the molecule are more suitable for this purpose; the type of ring in the core is less important.  相似文献

Hydrogen-bonded liquid crystalline complexes have been obtained through 1:1 (molar ratio) complexation of 4- n -alkoxycinnamic acids ( n CNA: n = 4, 8, 10, 12, where n is the number of carbons in the alkyloxy chain) and trans -4-octyloxystilbazole (8Sz). These hydrogen-bonded complexes ( n CNA8Sz) form stable mesophases. The mesomorphic range was extended by the mixing of complexes. Hexatic modification of smectic B (SmB h ), smectic C (SmC), smectic A (SmA), and nematic mesophases of these complexes were determined by a combination of X-ray diffraction and polarizing optical microscopy. Transitions between the various smectic phases were deduced from the temperature-dependent layer spacing of n CNA8Sz. The layer spacing of these complexes in the SmB h and SmA phases gradually increased with increasing alkoxy chain length. The favouring of smectic phases in these complexes is believed to originate from the increment of polarity of the mesogen by intermolecular H-bonding.  相似文献

A homologous series of azomethine esters,4-n-alkanoyloxybenzylidene-4’-bromoanilines possessing even number of carbon atoms at the terminal alkanoyloxy chain(Cn-1H2n-1COO- n = 8,10,12,14,16,18) was synthesized and characterized.Whilst n-octanoyloxy to n-dodecanoyloxy derivatives exhibited enantiotropic smectic A and smectic B phases,n-tetradecanoyloxy to n-octadecanoyloxy derivatives possessed enantiotropic smectic A and monotropic smectic B properties.n-Decanoyloxy derivatives demonstrated the optimum exhibition for both smectic A and smectic B phases. It was found that the length of terminal alkanoyloxy chain has an influence on mesomorphic properties.  相似文献

Abstract

The crucial role of the smectic A-nematic transitional order for the formation of the smectic A, B and G phases from an electrically deformed nematic phase of the liquid crystal 4-n-hexyloxy-benzylidene-4′-n-butylaniline (6O.4) with a typical smectic A-nematic first order transition and the formation of the smectic A and B phases from an electrically deformed nematic phase of the liquid crystal (4-n-butyloxy-benzylidene-4′-n-octylaniline (40.8) with a smectic A-nematic second order transition has been demonstrated. The nematic phase was deformed by an AC voltage of 2U,th 5U th and 10U th, where U th is the threshold voltage which causes the appearance of the Fréedericksz transition in the homeotropic nematic layer. The smectic textures have been observed on free cooling of the nematic phase or after the use of an oven. The smectic A phase of the liquid crystal 60.4 was observed with the formation of a clear smectic A-nematic phase boundary while the smectic A phase of the liquid crystal 40.8 has been formed from intermediate pretransitional stripes, observed by Cladis and Torza [1]. The homeotropic anchoring of the direction was crucial for the formation of the smectic phases of the liquid crystal 40.8 but not significant for the liquid crystal 60.4.  相似文献

Liquid crystal compound N-(4-n-pentyloxybenzalidene) 4′-n-pentylaniline is very interesting because of its rich phase variant, i.e. nematic, smectic A, smectic C, smectic F and smectic G phases. In the present work, temperature- and frequency-dependent dielectric studies on this compound in the homeotropic and planar orientation of molecules have been carried out in the frequency range of 1 Hz–10 MHz. The compound shows negative dielectric anisotropy (i.e. Δε < 0). Dielectric studies have shown three relaxation modes of different origin in various phases of the material. Relaxation frequencies of the observed modes follow Arrhenius behaviour. The relaxation due to interfacial polarisation, i.e. Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars effect has been observed in the nematic and isotropic phases. A relaxation mode due to the fluctuation of molecular tilt resembling the soft mode has been detected in the smectic A phase with pre- and post-transitional effects. Another mode due to the fluctuation of molecules about their short axes has been detected in the nematic and smectic A, C, F and G phases. Activation energies and ionic conductivity of these phases have also been determined.  相似文献
