We use the Landau theory of phase transitions to obtain the global phase diagram concerning the uniaxial nematic, biaxial nematic, uniaxial smectic-A and biaxial smectic-A phases. The transition between the biaxial nematic and biaxial smectic is continuous as well as the transition between the nematic phases and the transition between the smectic phases. The transition from uniaxial nematic and uniaxial smectic is continuous with a tricritical point. The tricritical point may be absent and the entire transition becomes continuous. The four phases meet at a tetracritical point.  相似文献

X-ray diffraction patterns for the uniaxial and biaxial nematic phases exhibited by rigid bent-core mesogens were calculated using a simple model for the molecular form factor and a modified Lorentzian structure factor. The X-ray diffraction patterns depend strongly on the extent of the alignment of the molecular axes as well as the orientation of molecular planes. The X-ray diffraction can be unequivocally used to identify the biaxial nematic phase, study the uniaxial-biaxial phase transition, and estimate the order parameters of the nematic phase.  相似文献

Using Landau theory, it is shown that eight phenomenological parameters are needed to describe and distinguish the twelve viscosity coefficients of a biaxial nematic phase, or the five viscosity coefficients of a uniaxial nematic phase. The dependence of the coefficients on the macroscopic uniaxial and biaxial order parameters is established. Since these order parameters are determined by the anisotropies of the dielectric constant, we show that it should be possible to determine values for all eight of the phenomenological parameters of the theory from measurements of the temperature dependence of the five viscosities of a uniaxial phase.  相似文献

In this article, the search for the elusive biaxial nematic phase (NB) in liquid crystals is considered. The structure of the phase is described along with theoretical and computational work which suggests how it might be realised. An overview of the work of the Exeter group in this area is then given showing the different approaches adopted and illustrating how one of these has led to a new type of amphiphilicity based on shape.  相似文献

The lyotropic mixture of potassium laurate/decanol/water presenting only the uniaxial nematic calamitic phase was doped with one strong (potassium chloride, KCl) and 11 weak electrolytes with phenyl-rings (DL-mandelic acid, benzoic acid, DL-phenyllactic acid, phenylacetic acid, phenol and phenylmethanol) and with cyclohexyl-ring (RS-hexahydromandelic acid, cyclohexanecarboxylic acid, cyclohexaneacetic acid, cyclohexanol and cyclohexylmethanol), separately. We also chose two nonpolar dopant molecules, benzene and cyclohexane, for the comparison of them with weak electrolytes, since they are located in the hydrocarbon core of the micelle. The nematic phase sequences, in particular the presence of the biaxial nematic phase, were investigated as a function of the dopant molar concentration and temperature. The laser conoscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering techniques were used to characterise the different nematic phases. Weak electrolytes having –COOH group as polar part were found to be very effective in stabilising the three nematic phases (two uniaxial and a biaxial). Guest molecules with only the –OH group did not show any effect on the stabilisation of other nematic phases. The experimental results are interpreted considering the screening effect of the hydrophilic parts of the dopants on the repulsion between the polar heads of the main amphiphilic molecules at micelle surfaces. This process favours the increase of the more flat micellar surfaces of micelles, which triggers the orientational fluctuations responsible for the biaxial and discotic nematic phases.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We use the Landau theory of phase transitions to describe the phase diagram of a liquid crystal displaying the isotropic (i), nematic (N), smectic-A and smectic-C phases. The order parameter of the smectic-C phase is defined as the projection of the director on the plane of the smectic layers, vanishing in the smectic-A phase. We present a detailed phase diagram that shows transition between any two of these phases, containing a triple point INA, a Lifshitz point NAC, a tricritical at the NA line, and a critical end point IAC. As one approaches the NC line from the smectic-C phase, the tilt angle approaches a nonzero value, but if the AC line is approached, the tilt angle vanishes according to the distance to the AC line to the power 1/2.  相似文献

Fukuda et al. reexamined the Berreman's model which attributes the surface anchoring to the elastic distortion of the uniaxial nematic liquid crystal induced by the grooves of a surface. They showed that at the variance with the assumption made in the original approach of Berreman, the azimuthal distortion of the director cannot be considered as negligibly small. Now this method is generalized to the biaxial nematic liquid crystals, with some approximations for the elastic constants. We obtain an additional term in the elastic distortion energy per unit area which depends on the second power of the cosine of the angle made between the main director n at infinity and the direction of the surface grooves. This additional term describes the distortion energy of the minor director m induced by the surface grooves when the n director is anchored exactly along the grooves. We have studied the stability of the n director around the grooves, and in one-constant model for each director the stability condition is that the elastic constant of the n director is the maximum.  相似文献

Liquid crystalline Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes of tetradentate ligands, enaminoketones and 3-oxa; 3-thia- and 3-selena-butyramides were synthesized and examined. The compounds show very low C 1 symmetry resulting from the chiral donor atoms — oxygen, sulphur and selenium — incorporated in the butyric amide moiety. This chirality can be observed in NMR studies. The complexes exhibit enantiotropic as well as monotropic calamitic SmA and N phases.  相似文献

We prepared some achiral flexible liquid crystal oligomers possessing an octafluorobiphenyl unit and investigated their phase transition properties using polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. All the compounds showed nematic phases. The trimer with even-numbered spacers was found to exhibit coexistence of the nematic regions and the chiral nematic regions with opposite twist senses of a sample contained in a homogeneous aligned cell during a cooling process, whilst that with odd-numbered spacers did not. We discuss how the even-numbered trimer produces the helical state.  相似文献

Three new series of bent-shaped molecules with 4-chlororesorcinol, 4-bromoresorcinol or 4-fluororesorcinol as the central unit, and azobenzene with different alkoxy chain length as side arms were synthesised. The mesophase behaviour was investigated by polarising optical microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. A representative example has also been characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. It is found that almost all of the materials prepared are monotropic liquid crystalline. Depending on the substituent at the central unit and on the chain length nematic phases, B6 phases, a B4-like dark conglomerate phase and a modulated/undulated anticlinic SmC phase were found. As a unique feature, upon reducing the chain length a transition from nematic to B6-type smectic phases was observed, which is reverse to usually observed phase sequences. The UV–vis absorption spectroscopy was also performed to study the effect of light-induced trans–cis-isomerisation on the prepared compounds.  相似文献

Banana-shaped molecules, e.g. 1,3-phenylene bis[4-(4-n-alkoxyphenyliminomethyl)benzoates] and 1,3-phenylene bis[4-(4-n-alkylphenyliminomethyl)benzoates], form ferroelectric and chiral smectic phases without a chiral carbon. 13C NMR measurement suggested that 1,3-benzenediol dibenzoate (BD) moiety assumes asymmetrically twisted conformation which may be ascribed to the chirality of the phases. In this study, conformational analysis was carried out for BD by using the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The results indicated that the asymmetrical twist conformation of the BD moiety is most stable.  相似文献

A polymethylsiloxane with 4-propoxybenzoic acid side groups was prepared by hydrosilylation of polymethylhydrosiloxane and methyl 4-allyloxybenzoate followed by hydrolysis. The existence of strong hydrogen bonding interactions in this polymer due to dimerization of the carboxylic acid groups was demonstrated by FTIR. The polymer exhibits a nematic mesophase at elevated temperatures due to the self-assembly of hydrogen-bonded mesogens (dimers). After cooling from its nematic melt, a stable hydrogen-bonded nematic network structure was formed, as demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Temperature-variable FTIR analysis presents a convincing interpretation for the DSC thermogram of the polymer, and furthermore assists in understanding the process of formation of the nematic network and the reversibility of such hydrogen-bonded networks.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of two homologous series of bent-core (BC) compounds derived from 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene are reported. The two series differ from one another by an electron-withdrawing or an electron-donating lateral substituent on the middle phenyl ring of the arms of the BC. Very interestingly, contrasting results are obtained in which polar phases are observed in compounds containing a chloro substituent and apolar smectic C and nematic phases are obtained when this substituent is replaced by a methyl group. The mesophases have been characterised by using a combination of polarised light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction measurements, electro-optical and dielectric studies.  相似文献

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the nematic phase of bent-core oxadiazole-based liquid crystals (LCs) was studied and compared to that for the rod-like compound 4-cyano-4?-n-octylbiphenyl (8CB). Weak, isotropically scattered second-harmonic (SH) light was observed for all materials, consistent with SHG by nematic director fluctuations. The SH intensity produced by the bent-core materials was found to be up to ~ 3.4 times that of 8CB. We discuss this result in terms of the dependence of SH intensity on temperature, elastic constants and flexoelectric coefficients. We have calculated the latter by using a molecular field approach with atomistic modelling, thus demonstrating how molecular parameters contribute to the flexoelectric coefficients and illustrating the potential of this method for predicting the flexoelectric behaviour of bent-core LCs. We show that the increased SH signal in the bent-core compounds is partly due to their nematic phases being at a much higher temperature, and also potentially due to them having greater flexoelectric coefficients, up to ~1.5 times those of 8CB. These estimates are consistent with reports of increased flexoelectric coefficients in bent-core compounds in comparison to rod-like compounds.  相似文献

The joint influence of optical and (quasi-)static electric fields on the orientation of liquid crystal gives rise to peculiar effects. In this article we report on the generation of transient domains in liquid crystals, which are an order of magnitude larger than the size of the optical field profile. The formation of such a domain is due to the fact that the initially present optical field reverses the pre-tilt, and the voltage that is then applied gives rise to an amplification of the tilt angle. The resulting reorientation of the director strongly depends on the starting conditions of the preliminary present optical field. We demonstrate different switching conditions, depending on the relation between the incident angle of the beam and the pre-tilt angle. The resulting refractive index profiles give rise to lensing effects.  相似文献
