It is possible to probe directly the optic tensor profile within a thin ferroelectric liquid crystal layer by the propagation of prism-coupled leaky guided modes. Plane parallel monochromatic radiation of single polarization is made incident through a prism into a planar ferroelectric liquid crystal layer. Monitoring the reflected signal as a function of incident angle results in a series of sharp dips at angles corresponding to the excitation of modes in the layer. For a ferroelectric layer in which there is in-plane or out-of-plane tilt, conversion of one linear polarization to the orthogonal polarization may occur, by detecting this conversion it has been possible to show the existence of thin boundary regions at the two surfaces of the thin ferroelectric liquid crystal layer.  相似文献

Abstract

The temperature and frequency dependences of the complex dielectric susceptibility of a ferroelectric liquid crystal near the smectic C*-smectic A phase transition have been calculated using the classical and generalized Landau models. It is shown that although the dielectric response of the S*C phase consists generally of four modes (soft, Goldstone, and two high frequency polarization modes) only three bands appear in the dielectric loss spectrum of ferroelectric liquid crystals at the SA–S*C phase transition. These results are in agreement with recent experimental data.  相似文献

Abstract

The excitation of optical modes is used to study the optical tensor configuration in a thin ferroelectric liquid crystal layer, cooled from the initially homeotropically aligned nematic phase. By monitoring the angular dependent reflectivity for plane polarized radiation coupled into the guided modes in the smectic C* layer and subsequently fitting the recorded data to predictions from multilayer optics theory, the optical tensor configuration in the layer is fully evaluated. Iteratively modelling the full tilt/twist profile in the cell, progressively converging the predicted reflectivity to experimental data, gives a complete and very well specified picture of the optical tensor throughout the cell. By studying the cell at various temperatures, the temperature dependence of the tilt of the major axis of the optic tensor (which may be related to the cone angle if the smectic layers are parallel to the cell surface) has been established. The temperature dependent optical dielectric constants have also been obtained.  相似文献

Abstract

In this work, the electro-optic response of a 6CB liquid crystal layer is studied using a sensitive differential technique. The layer is held at a temperature just above the nematic to isotropic phase transition. Transverse magnetic (p) polarized light incident on the cell is coupled to guided modes in the liquid crystal layer using prism coupling. The modes manifest themselves as sharp dips in the reflectivity as the angle of incidence is scanned. When a low frequency sinusoidal voltage is applied to the cell, the resonant mode shapes and excitation angles are altered at a frequency which is twice that of the applied field, resulting in a modulation of the reflectivity for a given angle of incidence. By synchronous observation of the modulated signal, a differential signal is recorded. Comparing the data with modelling generated from multilayer optics theory, two effects are then quantified. The first of these is an induced birefringence, varying quadratically with applied voltage, which is well understood and can be expressed in terms of Landau-de Gennes theory. The second is a field induced perturbation in the imaginary part of the optical permittivity, δεi, which implies a modification of the light scattering properties of the liquid crystal. The measurement of the latter effect is, as far as we know, a novel one, being only made possible by the remarkable sensitivity of the synchronous differential technique.  相似文献

The excitation of half leaky guided optical modes to characterize fully the optical tensor profile in a thin liquid crystal layer has been used to evaluate the effect of rubbed polyimide aligning layers on the alignment of a nematic liquid crystal. A cell fabricated with rubbed polyimide alignment surfaces was studied at a wavelength of 632.8 nm. The liquid crystalline layer is sandwiched between a high refractive index top glass plate and a low refractive index glass substrate. Angular dependent reflectivities are recorded using a coupling prism and matching fluid with the same index as the top glass plate. Careful fitting of the predictions from multilayer optics theory to the observed angle dependent polarization conversion and reflectivity data yields the director profile within the liquid crystal layer in great detail.  相似文献

Abstract

New chiral dopants, possessing a trifluoromethyl group, have been synthesized. These dopants have different polar groups, located between the chiral centre and the diphenylacetylene core. The polar part is chosen from ester, methylene ether and ether linkages. Each new chiral dopant was mixed with a non-chiral liquid crystal mixture or a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture, and their transition temperatures and electrooptic properties measured. The largest spontaneous polarization, 4·1 nC cm?2, was obtained at 25°C for the ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture in which the dopant, with a methylene ether linkage, was incorporated. Molecular orbital calculations (MNDO method) for the dopants show that the calculated dipole moments are correlated with the measured spontaneous polarization, and the calculated results explain the experimental results quite well. In addition, it has been found that the conformation of the chiral part is an important factor which affects the magnitude of spontaneous polarization.  相似文献

The optic tensor configuration in a surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cell is investigated using optical excitation of half leaky guided modes. A thin ferroelectric liquid crystal layer is confined between a high index pyramid, with an index greater than the maximum of the liquid crystal, and a glass substrate having an index less than the minimum of the liquid crystal. Using standard attenuated total reflection experimental procedures, over a small angle range a series of sharp resonant peaks are recorded in the s-polarized reflectivity using p-polarized incident light. These peaks are extraordinarily sensitive to details of the optical tensor configuration within the cell. Fitting theoretically modelled reflectivities from multilayer Fresnel theory to the data allows determination of near surface alignment, bending of the chevron, surface tilt angle and biaxiality. To give a clear physical explanation for the great sensitivity of the technique, the electromagnetic field component distributions in the cell are also presented and analysed. The results confirm that the half leaky guided mode method has enormous potential for the study of the optic tensor configuration in liquid crystal layers.  相似文献

Abstract

A fast electrooptic modulation in a polymer waveguide using a ferroelectric liquid crystal has been proposed. In this device, the surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal and the soft mode ferroelectric liquid crystal are used as an active material on the passive polymer waveguide, and electrooptic switching is realized by controlling the total reflection at the polymer waveguide-liquid crystal interface. The response time is of the order of several microseconds. The analogue electrooptic modulation in the waveguide is realized using the field induced linear molecular tilt of the electroclinic effect in the soft mode ferroelectric liquid crystal.  相似文献

Abstract

Recent papers have described the short-pitch bistable ferroelectric liquid crystal effect (SBF) attributing its bistability to its stripe layer texture [1]. We have studied the bistability of this SBF effect for the short-pitch ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture ZhKS-76 using thin planar aligned cells. Both the SBF texture (the stripe texture) and a uniform texture (uniform tilt layer structure with the extinction direction along the layer normal) were observed in different regions of a given cell when the cell was cooled down slowly from the isotropic phase to the chiral smectic C phase. Upon applying external fields, both regions are characterized by the formation of helix unwinding lines. The stripe area showed zig-zag unwinding lines and the uniform area exhibited straight unwinding lines, both running parallel to the layers. The bistability study shows a similar hysteresis curve and threshold behaviour on switching for both the SBF texture area and the uniform area, although the uniform area gcve better contrast. These facts strongly indicate that as in the long pitch FLCs, the surfaces rather than the layer stripe texture hinder the formation of the helix in the cell, and this produces dynamic bistable switching.  相似文献

Abstract

Broadband dielectric measurements on a multicomponent ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture have been performed. The alignment was homeotropic and the cell and sample holder were the same in the whole frequency range. Two relaxation processes have been observed in all liquid crystal phases with shapes given by the Havriliak-Negami and inverted Havriliak-Negami functions. Strengths and frequencies of both modes have been obtained for the different phases. The values of the latter and their activation energies allowed us to assign the low and high frequency mechanism to the molecular reorientation around the transversal axis and around the longitudinal axis, respectively. The behaviour of this high frequency mode does not show any jump in the SA-S*c phase transition, neither in the amplitude nor in the frequency, indicating that the appearance of the spontaneous polarization in the S*c phase is not the consequence of the freezing of this mode.  相似文献

Abstract

A chiral liquid crystal compound exhibiting the ferroelectric smectic C phase and the recently discovered ferroelectric smectic M phase has been studied by measurements of the Goldstone-mode relaxation frequency and dielectric strength, the spontaneous polarization, the tilt angle and the helical pitch. The data allow the determination of the Goldstone-mode rotational viscosity and the pitch controlling elastic constant. The results indicate that the smectic M phase is characterized by a larger molecular order within the smectic layers compared to the smectic C phase confirming the assumption of a tilted hexatic structure for the smectic M phase.  相似文献

Abstract

Measurements of complex electric permittivity of room temperature ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures have been made on aligned samples with the electric measuring field being parallel to the layer planes. The spontaneous polarization, the tilt angles and pitch have been measured in these mixtures. By theoretical fitting of the experimental points of electric permittivity for the Cole–Cole modification of the Debye equation dielectric parameters, the dielectric strength, relaxation frequency, and distribution parameter for the Goldstone mode have been computed. The dielectrically observed Goldstone mode in our mixtures is shown to have both DC bias field and AC field dependences.  相似文献

Abstract

We present scanning tunnelling microscopy images of a ferroelectric liquid crystal in its chiral smectic C phase. These images show evidence of pronounced interaction between the adjacent lateral dipoles located near the chiral centres of neighbouring molecules. The two dimensional structure at the graphite—liquid crystal interface is found to be highly ordered. Features of this crystal-like order are the pronounced dimer arrangement within a layer and a kinked conformation in which the aromatic core is tilted with respect to the chains. The core axis is tilted at 30° with respect to the layer normal in the plane of the interface. This tilt is very similar to the tilt angle of the bulk material.  相似文献

Abstract

A detailed study of the dielectric and optical properties of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material (R)-4′-(3-methoxycarbonyl-2-propoxycarbonyl)phenyl 4-(4-(n-octyloxy)phenyl)benzoate (3MC2PCPOPB) has been carried out. It has been found that an anomalous temperature dependence of the dielectric constant in 3MC2PCPOPB is due to the antiferroelectric and ferrielectric properties. A T(temperature)-E(electric field) phase diagram has been obtained on the basis of the apparent tilt angle measurements. In a thin cell (< 3 μm), both ferroelectric and antiferroelectric domains are simultaneously observed over a wide temperature range, and the complete antiferroelectric phase does not appear even at low temperature. A characteristic texture in which boundary focal conics are aligned parallel to a smectic layer has been observed. The movement of the zig-zag defect line caused by the application of the voltage is also observed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The rapid development of consumer electronics and portable devices imposes a great demand for energy efficient information display systems. Among the information display devices, liquid crystal display (LCD) devices stands in the front. The fabrication of energy-efficient LCD systems demands new material and techniques. In this work, the conventional polyimide alignment layer of twisted nematic liquid crystal device (TNLCD) was replaced with ferroelectric polymer nanoparticle doped alignment layer. Morphology of the alignment layer was analysed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The ferroelectric nature of the polymer alignment layer was studied using dynamic contact electrostatic force microscopy (DC-EFM). TNLCD cells are fabricated with this modified alignment layer and the switching characteristics are compared with the conventional TNLCD devices. The TNLCD with modified alignment layer has shown a reduction of 50% in threshold (Vthr) and 47% reduction in saturation voltage (Vsat).  相似文献

Abstract

We present the results of our studies of the ferroelectric properties of mixtures of a high polarization, ferroelectric liquid crystalline copolymer and its side-group antecedent, a high polarization, low molecular weight, ferroelectric mesogen. These two materials are found to be completely miscible in all proportions. Spontaneous polarization values and electro-optical response times are found to be monotonic functions of the weight percentage of the mesogen in the mixture, while optical tilt angles do not exhibit such a monotonic dependence.  相似文献

A new ferroelectric liquid crystal, 1-ethylpropyl (S)-2-[2-fluoro-4-(4′-decyloxybiphenylcarbonyloxy) benzoyloxy] propanoate, F, was synthesized and mixed with an achiral swallow-tailed material, 2-propylpentyl 4-(4′-nonyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy) benzoate,P, for the preparation of binary mixtures for the study. The binary mixtures gave a phase sequence SmA* -SmC* -SmX*. The electro-optic response of the mixtures in the ferroelectric SmC* phase was investigated. V-shaped switching was observed as the amount of the achiral swallow-tailed material became greater than 20 wt %. This result suggests that thresholdless, V-shaped switching in ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures can be achieved by mixing a ferroelectric liquid crystal with an achiral swallow-tailed compound.  相似文献

Here the method of propagation of optic modes to examine the alignment in a ferroelectric liquid crystal layer is fully discussed. A sample geometry which allows the excitation of optic modes in a ferroelectric liquid crystal cell is presented and the data obtained in terms of reflectivity. The data are analysed by modelling the expected reflectivity from such a cell for a selection of proposed models for the optic tensor configuration. Models where the smectic layering lies perpendicular to the cell surfaces, or bends slowly across a cell are seen to be incorrect. It is found that a discontinuity in the smectic layering in the middle of the cell must be included to model the data well. This is consistent with the chevron structure seen in X-ray scattering work, and leads to an optic tensor alignment which is largely uniform across the ferroelectric layer. The relation between this and observation of conventional ferroelectric cells is discussed.  相似文献
