Abstract

It is shown that the McMillan parameter M = T SAN/T N1 (where T SAN and T NI are respectively the temperatures of the smectic A to nematic (SAN) and the nematic to isotropic (NI) phase transitions) is useful in analysing the crossover between second and first order behaviour of the SNN transition in the nO.m homologous liquid crystal series (the 4-n-alkoxybenzylidene-4′-n-alkylanilines). Using a phase diagram of orientational ordering versus M for this series, as obtained in this work (from E.S.R. and D.S.C), a symmetric tricritical point with mean field exponent β2 = 1 is demonstrated. In a preliminary study of E.S.R. linewidth parameters B and C of nitroxide spin probes dissolved in members of the nO.m series exhibiting a first order SAN transition, critical-type divergences are observed near this transition. In the case where M is closer to 0.959 (the value at the tricritical point), these divergences appear similar to those previously observed in related nO.m members with a second order SAN transition; however, they are considerably enhanced for an M value closer to unity (i.e. more removed from the tricritical point). This indicates the importance of coupling between orientational and positional order parameters in the observed critical-type divergences.  相似文献

A simple statistical model of interacting non-rigid molecules, based on a perturbation expansion of the pair correlation function and the additivity of segmental interactions, is applied to the study of orientational order as measured by N.M.R. in the nematic and SA phases of 4-n-alkyl-4'-cyanobiphenyls (N-CB, N = 5 to 8), the nematic and SC phases of 4-n-alkyloxybenzoic acids (N-OBA, N = 7, 8) and the Dh0 columnar discotic phase of hexa-alkyloxytriphenylenes (N-THE, N = 5 to 8). The order parameters of each homologous series are correctly described in terms of two isotropic and two anisotropic segmental coupling constants. The model predicts certain relations among coupling constants pertaining to different homogous series. These predictions are supported by the results obtained for the three types of compounds studied.  相似文献

Abstract

Two experimental techniques—time domain spectroscopy (TDS) and a steady state frequency method—have been used to study dielectric spectra for the isotropic, nematic, SA, SC and SY phases of two thioesters (4-n-pentylphenyl-4′-n-octyloxy-and 4′-n-nonyloxythiobenzoates (C n H2n+1 O?C6 H4?COS?C6H4?C5H11, where n = 8 and n = 9) known as 8S5 and 9S5, in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 10 GHz. In the case of 8S5 a deuteriated sample (8S5-d 28) has been used to study relaxation processes in the nematic and smectic phases.  相似文献

Abstract

A perturbation expansion of the pair correlation function is used to derive the molecular field self-consistency equations for non-rigid molecules. The order parameters and the thermodynamic functions are expressed directly in terms of the segmental interaction coupling constants. The values of these constants for the 4-n-alkyl-4'-cyanobiphenyis (NCB) are determined by analysing the orientational order parameters observed by N.M.R. in the nematic phase; they are in reasonable agreement with values obtained from calculations of the nematic-isotropic transition temperatures. It is found that contributions of the isotropic intermolecular interactions to the conformational energy of the alkyl chain are comparable in magnitude to the direct intramolecular contributions.  相似文献

Abstract

Dielectric relaxation measurements of 5 mole % 4-n-hexyloxycyanobenzene (I) dissolved in 4-n-pentyloxyphenyl-trans-4-n-octylcyclohexylcarboxylate (II) were carried out from 1 kHz to 10 MHz in the nematic, smectic A and smectic B phases. The relaxation frequency of I parallel to the director is about 05 MHz in the SBphase and increases rapidly at the transition from SB to SA.  相似文献

A secondary chiral (R)-(?)-2-alcohol underwent the Mitsunobu reaction with triphenylphosphine, diethyl azodicarboxylate and ethyl 4-hydroxybiphenylcarboxylate, resulting in the desired (S)-(+)-product with high enantiomeric purity (>99% ee), with the chiral branched chain attached to the biphenyl. This method is operationally simple and provides the very important chiral precursor in good yields (62% in dry THF and 72% in dry Et2O). The condensation of the (S)-(+)-acid chloride from this material and a suitable 4-n-alkylthiophenol in toluene in the presence of pyridine or triethylamine furnishes the chiral (S)-(+)-thiobenzoate liquid crystals in good yields (80–83% in pyridine and 65–68% in Et3N). (S)-(+)-4-(1-Methylheptyloxy)biphenyl 4-alkylthiobenzoates are abbreviated (S)-MHOBSn , where n varies from 4 to 10 and denotes the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain. DSC, polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the (S)-MHOBSn series possesses a rich phase polymorphism: two highly ordered tilted phases CrG* and SmI*, as well as the ferroelectric smectic C (SmC*) and chiral nematic (N*) phase. In this series, the seldom observed transition between the chiral phases SmI*–SmC* is seen. All the compounds possess stable enantiotropic SmC* and N* phases. The existence of weak intermolecular hydrogen-bonding in (S)-MHOBSn was confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy.  相似文献

Abstract

The spectral densities of motion were determined by deuterium N.M.R. relaxation measurements in the nematic, smectic A and smectic C phases of 4-n-pentyloxybenzylidene-d 1-4′-heptylaniline and 4-n-pentyloxybenzylidene-4′-heptylaniline-2,3,5,6-d 4. By examining two atomic sites on a 5O.7 molecule, we were able to gain information on the reorientation motion and internal rotation of the aniline ring. It was also found that director fluctuations make some contribution to the spectral density J 1 (ω). We use the superimposed rotations model to account for the internal ring motion and the small step rotational diffusion model for the molecular reorientation. The derived rotational diffusion constants for the spinning and tumbling motions appear to give physically plausible activation energies in the mesophases of 5O.7.  相似文献

Abstract

The crucial role of the smectic A-nematic transitional order for the formation of the smectic A, B and G phases from an electrically deformed nematic phase of the liquid crystal 4-n-hexyloxy-benzylidene-4′-n-butylaniline (6O.4) with a typical smectic A-nematic first order transition and the formation of the smectic A and B phases from an electrically deformed nematic phase of the liquid crystal (4-n-butyloxy-benzylidene-4′-n-octylaniline (40.8) with a smectic A-nematic second order transition has been demonstrated. The nematic phase was deformed by an AC voltage of 2U,th 5U th and 10U th, where U th is the threshold voltage which causes the appearance of the Fréedericksz transition in the homeotropic nematic layer. The smectic textures have been observed on free cooling of the nematic phase or after the use of an oven. The smectic A phase of the liquid crystal 60.4 was observed with the formation of a clear smectic A-nematic phase boundary while the smectic A phase of the liquid crystal 40.8 has been formed from intermediate pretransitional stripes, observed by Cladis and Torza [1]. The homeotropic anchoring of the direction was crucial for the formation of the smectic phases of the liquid crystal 40.8 but not significant for the liquid crystal 60.4.  相似文献

Abstract

An N.M.R. method combining the techniques of separated local field spectroscopy (SLF) and variable angle spinning (VAS) is valuable in the investigtion of nematic liquid crystals. Rapid sample spinning causes the nematic director to align along the spinning axis, resulting in narrow peaks in the C-13 N.M.R. spectrum. SLF is a two-dimensional N.M.R. method which produces a first order splitting pattern for each carbon signal from which C–H dipolar coupling constants can be determined. The order parameters for all segments of the liquid crystal molecule can then be calculated. Results for three 4′-cyanophenylcyclohexanes are considered here. These compounds are trans-substituted at the 4 position of cyclohexane ring with n-pentane (PCH5), 1-pentene (3d 1CP) and 3-pentene (1d 3CP), respectively.  相似文献

Abstract

The phase transition of a series of homologous liquid-crystalline compounds, nO.m (4-n-alkoxybenzilidene-4′-n-alkylanilines), from the nematic phase to the smectic A phase has been studied by 13C NMR. The order parameters, determined by a two dimensional technique called separated local field spectroscopy combined with off-magic angle spinning, of different molecular segments of these compounds are related linearly to the 13C chemical shifts. Changes in the order parameters of the phenyl rings as well as those of the chains during the SA–N transition depend on the nature of the phase transition. These changes are quantitatively related to the McMillan ratio, which is defined as the ratio between the SA–N transition temperature (T SAN) and the nematic to isotropic transition temperature (T NI), i.e. M = T SAN/T NI. The SA–N transition is first order for M > M TCP, and second order for M < M TCP, where TCP is the tricritical point. The value of M TCP was found to be 0·958 ± 0·004, in excellent agreement with that obtained from spin probe studies (0·959 ± 0·005) reported by Freed and co-workers [1].  相似文献

As part of our detailed comparative studies of groups of liquid-crystalline compounds that belong to a homologous series, we present phase-transition studies of the compounds N-(4-n-pentyloxybenzylidene)4′-n-pentylaniline (5O.5) and N-(4-n-nonyloxybenzylidene)4′-n-butylaniline (9O.4) using different experimental techniques. The compound 5O.5 is reported to exhibit a phase sequence N, SA, SC, SB and SG, while 90.4 shows the sequence SA, SF and SG. The salient features of our work on 5O.5 are (i) a new smectic F phase is found in place of the reported smectic B phase, which is confirmed by both miscibility and X-ray studies; (ii) the formation of smectic-C-like short-range order in the nematic phase well above the SA-N transition; and (iii) a large tilt-angle variation in the smectic C phase (0–23·5°C) in a small temperature range (4·1°C). The phase changes across the SA-I transition, and for the first time across SF-SA transition, are carried out by volumetric studies. The detailed inferences of these are also presented.  相似文献

4-n-Alkoxyphenyl4-[(4-n-alkoxy-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)ethynyl]benzoates (compound A) are synthesised by a convenient method. These compounds exhibit only enantiotropic nematic phases and have very high clearing points. These compounds (As) can be transformed into corresponding ethane derivatives, via hydrogenation using a palladium catalyst (Pd/C), which exhibit monotropic nematic phases. The effect of the ethylene bridge (–CH2CH2–) on the mesomorphic behaviour is discussed.  相似文献

The orientational behaviour of the nematic discotic phase of 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexa(4-n-octyloxybenzoyloxy)triphenylene (C8OBT) on substrates coated with a polyimide or cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was investigated by polarizing optical microscopy. The averaged order parameters and directions of the triphenylene core and the carbonyl groups of C8OBT were evaluated by an infrared dichroic method. The discotic nematic (ND) phase of C8OBT exhibits a homeotropic alignment on a polyimide film, a typical nematic schlieren texture on a glass substrate, and a tilted or planar homogeneous alignment on a CTAB-coated substrate. The order parameter of the triphenylene core is higher on a polyimide film (S = 0.6) than on a CTAB-coated substrate (S = 0.2), whereas that of the carbonyl groups remains roughly constant at 0.2 to 0.3 independent of the substrate for the ND phase.  相似文献

Abstract

We have studied the influence of thermally excited orientational fluctuations on the N.M.R. lineshape of a nematic monodomain. The influence is characterized by a static order parameter S stat whose theoretical expression in terms of viscoelastic parameters is derived. This model is applied to the proton N.M.R. spectrum of a thermotropic main chain polymer. The values of S stat are deduced from the study of the changes of the N.M.R. lineshape as a function of the angle between the static magnetic field and the nematic director. Good agreement is obtained with theoretical values calculated using estimated values of the Leslie viscosity coefficients and the Frank elastic constants. The importance of an accurate knowledge of S stat for a number of problems is stressed.  相似文献

Abstract

A light-scattering technique was used to study the anisotropy of turbidity and the three elastic constants K 1, K 2 and K 3 of 8CB as a function of temperature and sample thickness. The turbidity was measured in the nematic and schematic A phases at sample thicknesses l of 0.02, 0.04, 0.1 and 0.2 cm. The effect of the smectic-like (cybotactic nematic) order was observed near the smectic A-nematic phase transition. Owing to the surface-enhanced cybotactic order, evaluation of the elastic constants and order parameter was possible only from the turbidity data at l = 0.2 cm. From the divergence of both K 2 and K 3 near TS A N we estimated an average critical exponent value v of 0.65, suggesting that SA-N in 8CB is a second-order phase transition. The magnetic-field quenching of director fluctuations showed observed effects on the order of magnitude of the temperature dependence of the turbidities, elastic constants and order parameter.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The synthesis and characterisation of several members of the 1,ω-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl) alkane (CBnCB) and the 1-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yloxy)-ω-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-yl) alkane (CBnOCB) homologous series are reported. The new odd members described CB5CB, CB13CB, CB4OCB, CB8OCB and CB10OCB all exhibit twist-bend nematic and nematic phases. The members of these series already reported in literature, CB7CB, CB9CB, CB11CB and CB6OCB, were also prepared in order to allow for a direct comparison of their transitional properties. The properties of these dimers are also compared to those of the corresponding members of the 1,ω-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4,-yloxy) alkanes (CBOnOCB). For any given total spacer length, for odd members of these series, the nematic–isotropic transition temperatures and associated entropy changes are greatest for the CBOnOCB dimer and lowest for the CBnCB dimer. These trends are understood in terms of molecular shape. For short spacer lengths, the twist-bend nematic–nematic transition temperature (TNTBN) is higher for the CBnOCB series than for the CBnCB series but this is reversed as the spacer length increases. Of the CBOnOCB dimers, a virtual value of TNTBN was estimated for CBO3OCB and TNTBN was measured for CBO5OCB. These values are considerably lower than those observed for the corresponding members of the CBnCB or CBnOCB series. The dependence of TNTBN on molecular structure is discussed not only in terms of the molecular curvature but also in the ability of the molecules to pack efficiently. As the temperature range of the preceding nematic phase increases, so the twist-bend nematic–nematic transition entropy change decreases and the transition approaches second order for the longer spacers. For comparative purposes, the transitional behaviour of the even-membered dimers CB6CB, CB5OCB and CBO4OCB is reported and differences accounted for in terms of molecular shape.  相似文献

Abstract

A homologous series of di(4-alkyloxybenzoates) of 4,4′-dimercaptobiphenyl: CH3(CH2) n-1O?C6H4?COS?C6H4?C6H4?SOC?C6H4?O(CH2) n-1CH3,n=1–7, has been synthesized and the thermotropic liquid-crystalline behaviour investigated. All compounds exhibit enantiotropic mesomorphism over a remarkable temperature range. While the mesophase thermal stability is moderately higher than that found for the corresponding oxygenated analogues, the smectic stability is definitely lower. In fact, all the compounds are nematic but smectic mesomorphism (SC) is observed for n = 7. Compounds with n = 6 or 7 exhibit enantiotropic highly ordered smectic (or disordered crystal) phases, probably SG in type.  相似文献

Hydrogen-bonded blends based on smectic side group functionalized LC copolymers containing 4-alkyloxybenzoic acid fragments (proton donor) and a non-mesogenic low molecular mass dopant 4-cyanophenyl pyridine-4-carboxylate or 4-methoxyphenyl-d4 pyridine-4-carboxylate (proton acceptor) were obtained. The blends containing 10-35 mol % of low molecular weight dopant form nematic (I-N-SmA) or re-entrant SmA phases (I-SmA-N-SmAre). The temperature dependence of the order parameter S, the birefringence Δn, and the splay K 1 and bend K 3 elastic constants of the nematic phase were studied by 2H NMR spectroscopy and the Fréedericksz method of threshold transitions in a magnetic field. A mechanism for the destruction of the SmA phase and the formation of the nematic phase in the hydrogen-bonded blends is suggested.  相似文献

Abstract

The temperature dependence of density in terephthalylidene-bis-p-n-alkylanilines (TBAA5 and 6) is studied to investigate the phase transitions, associated volume jumps, order of the transitions, estimated pressure dependence of transition temperatures, and pretransitional effects. The compounds exhibit nematic, smectic A, smectic C, smectic F, smectic G and smectic H phases with higher clearing temperatures. The smectic A to smectic C transition, which is a fluctuation induced first order transition in TBAA5, is found to be a second order transition in TBAA5 and 6. The results are discussed in the light of other experimental reports. The estimated pressure dependence of transition temperatures along with the reported experimental P[sbnd]T data are discussed. The N[sbnd]SA transition is first order in TBAA5 and 6. The studies across other transitions are also discussed.  相似文献
