The field effects in nematic liquid crystal layers are reanalysed using catastrophe theory. The layer with pretilted director orientation and obliquely applied magnetic field, the hybrid aligned nematic cell and twisted nematic structures are considered. The stable solutions are identified and transitions between them are specified. The results are in essential agreement with previous work. Some details concerning the behaviour near the threshold are revealed.  相似文献

Organic liquids such as nematic liquid crystals should wet solids with high surface energies like mica, yet they generally do not. In the model proposed here, the affinity to wet the solid in form of Hamaker forces is opposed by elastic effects due to nematic order. Results predict correctly that such liquids show small contact angles and the formation of ultrathin liquid films ahead of the bulk drops. Copyright 2001 Academic Press.  相似文献

A theoretical evaluation of the electric Freedericksz transition threshold and saturation field is proposed for a liquid crystals composite with ferroelectric particles. Existing models consider a strong anchoring of nematic molecules on the glass support of the cell, but in this paper a soft molecular anchoring of molecules on the glass support and also on the ferroelectric nanoparticle’s surface is assumed. Thus, a finite saturation field was obtained in agreement with real systems. Calculations are made for planar configuration of positive dielectric anisotropy liquid crystals. The results are compared with data obtained on similar systems from different publications and the differences are discussed.  相似文献

We report on a novel type of orientational photorefractive devices consisting of dye-doped or pure nematic liquid crystals. These systems can be employed as the recording media for real-time (dynamic) holography. Optical addressing of liquid crystal molecules is facilitated due to the natural tendency of molecular self-assembling in nematics and their easy reorientation upon action of an electric field. This field can be produced by incoming light via photoconductivity either in the bulk or at the surface of the nematic liquid crystal layer. We present an experimental study of dynamic self-diffraction of light on thin phase holograms formed in a nematic liquid crystal panel. Optically addressed spatial light modulators designed by us can be the active elements of image processing systems and in this communication we demonstrate the optical correlator performing image recognition.  相似文献

The effect of correlation between the conformational and orientational degrees of freedom of biaxial molecules with internal rotation on the conformational, orientational, and mixed order parameters of the molecules and on the function of the conformational distribution of molecules in nematic liquid crystals was studied in terms of molecular statistical theory. The correlation has a strong effect on polarizability of molecules with -conjugated fragments. An explanation is offered to the experimental dependences of the mean value and anisotropy of polarizability on the character and degree of orientational ordering of molecules in the nematic phase.  相似文献

The statistical properties of the conformational and orientational distribution of molecules with internal rotation in the isotropic and nematic phases of liquid crystal (LC) are investigated in terms of molecular statistical theory. The paper discusses the effect of mutual correlation between the molecular conformational and orientational degrees of freedom on the conformational, orientational, and mixed order parameters of molecules in LC and on the nematic–isotropic liquid transition temperature. For these order parameters, the recurrent relation method is suggested and used to derive the partial functions of the conformational and orientational distributions of molecules in LC.  相似文献

The sorption properties of stationary phases based on nematic p-substituted azoxybenzenes were studied. Correlations were revealed between the structural selectivity of mesogens, chemical nature of terminal substituents, capability for dispersion interactions and polarity of the sorbents, temperature gradient of the retention indices, and thermodynamic parameters of solution of xylene isomers in the sorbents.  相似文献

The existence of phase chirality in lyotropic liquid crystals still raises questions. The mechanisms behind the transfer of chirality throughout the long-range orientational order are not yet obvious. Guest/host systems with chiral dopants in achiral host phases offer the capability of systematic investigations. We demonstrate that the large amount of accessible sugar amphiphiles exhibits remarkable structure/property relations. Their helical twisting power HTP increases strongly with the number of sugar units of a dopant molecule. The spatial range of the chirality information reaching from a chirally doped micelle to adjacent aggregates is essential for the development of phase chirality. The induced twist of the lyotropic nematic host phase is highly sensitive to small changes of the sugar type (e.g., galacto- to glucopyranose). Depending on the nature of the host phase, either the alpha- or the beta-linkage of the sugar to the hydrophobic moiety of the sugar dopant results in larger HTP values. We propose that our amphiphilic sugar derivatives act like antennae to transfer chirality information. Their effectiveness as chiral dopants is due to a hydrophobic anchoring within the micelles and an extension of their chiral moiety far into the intermicellar region. The chirality transfer works especially well if the hydrophilic and chiral sugar moieties are oriented toward a neighboring micelle in the direction of the helix axis. Substances forming calamitic mesophases have been known for more than 100 years but only the recent, rapid advance in active matrix liquid crystal display (AM‐LCD) technology helped these materials to achieve the crucial position in flat panel display technology they hold today. Due to their high contrast, large viewing angle, and rapid switching times, modern AM‐LCDs offer a superior picture quality even compared to conventional cathode ray tubes. Their flatness, low weight, and low energy consumption render them the technology of choice for all kinds of portable devices. Some of the future promises of AM‐LCD technology are centered around the development of liquid crystalline materials for the different subtypes of active matrix applications. This development is aimed, on the one hand, towards improved electrooptical and viscoelastic properties; on the other hand, the increasing performance of LCDs leads to extremely stringent reliability demands on the liquid crystals. Responding to these high standards of performance and quality, most liquid crystals for contemporary AM‐LCD applications are multiply fluorinated compounds with very high purities, as is typical for materials used in the electronics industry. The synthesis of these superfluorinated materials (SFMs) often requires specialized methods, which, in several cases, had to be introduced for the first time into the canon of industrial production. The immense market pressure, as well as the rapid advance of AM‐LCD technology on the side of the display manufacturers, urges an increasing pace of the materials development. This demand for new materials can no longer be fulfilled by conventional trial‐and‐error approaches. As in the pharmaceutical industry, in the search for new, superior liquid crystals, the purely empirical methods are increasingly supported by a rational design based on computational methods.  相似文献

Thermotropic mesomorphous phases such as occur in the melts of many organic substances are considered. Though mesomorphous melts were first observed by Reinitzer in 1888, fundamental structural problems regarding such melts have not, as yet, been completely solved. Part I of this article deals mainly with such structural problems and with the theories of crystalline organic liquids. Part II describes the use of nematic solvents for magnetic resonance studies on oriented molecules. Examples are given to illustrate the possibilities offered by this procedure, and some of the results obtained so far are reviewed.  相似文献

Some properties of nematic liquid crystal E7 doped with two disperse orange dyes used together and effect of addition of carbon nanoparticles (single walled carbon nanotube or fullerene C60) on them were studied. Two dyes (disperse orange 11 and 13) having high solubility and order parameter were used as co-dopants. A notable increase in order pa-rameter was obtained comparing to that of liquid crystal doped with single dye. When carbon nanoparticles were used as dopant, a decrease in order parameter was observed at low temperatures while it increased at high temperatures. When applied voltage changed, the order parameter abruptly increased in its threshold value and saturated in higher voltages as expected. An appreciable change in textures was not observed with addition of dopants. This addition gave rise to an increase in nematic-isotropic phase transition temperatures compared with that of pure liquid crystal.  相似文献

液晶材料被广泛应用于液晶显示器(LCD)中,但是由于液晶中杂质的存在,导致液晶的应用电压变大,增加了能耗。 为了降低应用中的阈值电压和饱和电压,通常向液晶中添加纳米颗粒来提高电光性能。 本文采用简单的化学沉淀法制备了形貌均一,大小尺寸均匀的松果状氧化铁(P-Fe2O3)纳米颗粒。 将其掺杂到向列相液晶4-氰基-4'-戊基联苯(4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl,5CB)中,结果表明,掺杂质量分数为0.5%时,电光性能达到最优,阈值电压和饱和电压分别降低24.8%和45.2%,对比度增大46%,响应时间降低至17.6 ms,此性能优于相同条件下掺杂普通Fe2O3纳米颗粒的向列相液晶5CB,其阈值电压和饱和电压分别降低15%和16%。 这归因于松果状Fe2O3纳米颗粒可以在向列相液晶5CB中均匀分散,其粗糙的表面吸附了液晶中的杂质离子,减少了杂质离子的屏蔽效应,从而提高了电光性能。  相似文献

By using the attenuated total reflection method associated with the excitation of surface plasmons, the tilt angle of the liquid crystal director and its gradient at the surface are measured in a planar nematic cell as a function of the applied voltage. The surface anchoring anisotropy δπ of the liquid crystal and the surface elastic constant ks, are found to be δπ = 0.288 erg/cm and ks, = 9·12 × 10-11 erg, respectively, when the boundary condition suggested by Barbero et al is used. The theoretical and experimental values obtained with this boundary condition and that of Mada are discussed. The results show that the boundary condition proposed by Barbero et al is in better agreement with the experiment.  相似文献

合成了含有光敏基团、双端为季铵阳离子的有机铵盐.将这种季铵盐与聚乙烯基苯磺酸钠用LBL(Layer-by-layer)方法组装成多层分子沉积膜,紫外光谱证明,这个过程为逐层、均匀沉积过程.在偏振紫外光照射下,多层膜中和光矢量方向匹配的光敏基团发生[2+2]环加成反应,形成表面张力各向异性膜.用该薄膜作向列相液晶的取向膜制成反平行液晶器件,在偏光显微镜下观察,发现取得均一、稳定的取向效果.  相似文献

The nematic twist-bend (NTB) liquid crystal phase possesses a local helical structure with a pitch length of a few nanometres and is the first example of spontaneous symmetry breaking in a fluid system. All known examples of the NTB phase occur in materials whose constituent mesogenic units are aromatic hydrocarbons. It is not clear if this is due to synthetic convenience or a bona fide structural requirement for a material to exhibit this phase of matter. In this work we demonstrate that materials consisting largely of saturated hydrocarbons can also give rise to this mesophase.  相似文献

The results of nematic liquid crystal - isotropic liquid phase transition study by the method of differential scanning calorimetry for inclusion compounds - mesoporous aluminosilicate molecular sieves of MCM-41 type (including Cu-exchanged samples) with encapsulated in inner-crystalline space nematic liquid crystal (5CB), as well as IR spectroscopic data for such compounds were represented. It was shown, that the 5CB molecules are able to interact with the active centers in the MCM-41 channels forming strong enough bonds of -C≡N⋅⋅⋅H-O- type. The relative amount of 5CB molecules interacting with the walls of channels and those retaining ‘liquid crystalline’ state in binary systems of molecular sieves MCM-41 and CuMCM-41 was estimated. This conclusion was confirmed by the data obtained from differential scanning calorimetry measurements.
