Abstract A chiral liquid crystal compound exhibiting the ferroelectric smectic C phase and the recently discovered ferroelectric smectic M phase has been studied by measurements of the Goldstone-mode relaxation frequency and dielectric strength, the spontaneous polarization, the tilt angle and the helical pitch. The data allow the determination of the Goldstone-mode rotational viscosity and the pitch controlling elastic constant. The results indicate that the smectic M phase is characterized by a larger molecular order within the smectic layers compared to the smectic C phase confirming the assumption of a tilted hexatic structure for the smectic M phase. 相似文献

Influence of Cu6PS5? nanoparticles on the dielectric properties of planarly oriented 6СВ liquid crystal (LC) is studied in the 10–106-Hz frequency range. Introduction of the nanoparticles is shown to result in an increase of the electric conductivity. Contrary to 6СНВТ LC, the conductivity monotonously depends on the nanoparticles’ concentration. The main reason of the much greater influence of Cu6PS5? nanoparticles on the 6СВ conductivity in comparison with 6СНВТ is related to a greater dissociation coefficient of Cu6PS5? in 6СВ than in 6СНВТ. This is confirmed by the fact that the dipole moment of the 6СВ molecules is greater than that of the 6СНВТ molecules. 相似文献

A half-V-shaped switching ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) is a promising candidate for fast response displays. In the half-V FLC display, a liquid crystal with a chiral nematic–chiral smectic C phase transition is used, and the smectic layer is formed by cooling from N* to SmC* with an applied d.c. field. We studied the layer structure by means of X-ray measurements for two axes (ω and χ). By using a point-focused X-ray tube and optimizing the slit width, we succeeded in the two-axis measurement with a commercial X-ray system. The ω–χ profile of the half-V FLC showed two broad peaks in an arc-shaped high-intensity area. Our interpretation of this result is that the major part of the layer consists of a tilted-bookshelf structure and that the minor part consists of a near-bookshelf structure. Since optical microscopy observations on the half-V FLC cells showed a stripe-shaped texture, we consider that the coexistence of the tilted-bookshelf and the near-bookshelf structures forms the stripe-shaped patterns. The radius of the arc-shaped high-intensity area was nearly equal to the molecular tilt angle. This result can explain why the half-V FLC showed a desirable black appearance in spite of the stripe-shaped texture. 相似文献

Abstract Recent papers have described the short-pitch bistable ferroelectric liquid crystal effect (SBF) attributing its bistability to its stripe layer texture [1]. We have studied the bistability of this SBF effect for the short-pitch ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) mixture ZhKS-76 using thin planar aligned cells. Both the SBF texture (the stripe texture) and a uniform texture (uniform tilt layer structure with the extinction direction along the layer normal) were observed in different regions of a given cell when the cell was cooled down slowly from the isotropic phase to the chiral smectic C phase. Upon applying external fields, both regions are characterized by the formation of helix unwinding lines. The stripe area showed zig-zag unwinding lines and the uniform area exhibited straight unwinding lines, both running parallel to the layers. The bistability study shows a similar hysteresis curve and threshold behaviour on switching for both the SBF texture area and the uniform area, although the uniform area gcve better contrast. These facts strongly indicate that as in the long pitch FLCs, the surfaces rather than the layer stripe texture hinder the formation of the helix in the cell, and this produces dynamic bistable switching. 相似文献

In a nematic liquid crystal cell, the application of an ultrasonic wave induces a rotation of the director, leading to a change in the optical transmission through the cell. In this study, we investigate the dynamic response of the optical intensity after the ultrasonic wave is switched on or off. Our experiments show that the optical intensity follows a double‐exponential function of time, indicating that the system has two relaxation modes with widely different time scales. The fast mode has an amplitude and time scale qualitatively consistent with the dynamics of the Fréedericksz transition, but the slow mode shows novel behaviour associated with the acousto‐optic effect. 相似文献

We report the dielectric relaxation behaviour in the antiferroelectric SmCA* and ferrielectric SmCγ* phases of the antiferroelectric liquid crystal 4-[5-(4-octloxyphenyl)-2-pyrimidinyl]phenyl 4,4,4-trifluoro-3-(methoxyphenyl)butanoate which shows an antiferroelectric transition at around 88±0.1°C. In the SmCA* phase, two dielectric relaxation modes have been found, namely the usual antiferroelectric Goldstone mode and another arising from molecular rotation around its short axis. In the SmCγ* phase, one dielectric relaxation mode has been observed due to the ferrielectric Goldstone mode. Dielectric increments and relaxation frequencies of the antiferroelectric and ferrielectric phases are estimated from the fits of the Cole–Cole function of the dielectric spectrum. The dependence of the bias field in the ferrielectric phase is also discussed. 相似文献

Dielectric spectroscopy was used to study the influence of random disorder in aerosil–ferroelectric liquid crystal dispersions on the dynamics of the Goldstone mode near the point of polarization sign reversal and the relaxation rate and dielectric strength of the collective modes. In general, the dielectric strength and the relaxation frequency of the Goldstone mode decrease, in comparison with the bulk, with increasing aerosil density near a point of polarization sign reversal. However, the characteristic frequency of the Goldstone mode varies with silica density in an opposite manner on each side of this point. This can be explained as a different sensitivity on the spatial confinement of different molecular conformers above and below the point of polarization sign reversal. The experimental results of temperature and frequency dependence of the complex dielectric constant are compared with predictions of the generalized Landau model for ferroelectric liquid crystals. 相似文献

A novel heteronuclear complex, [NdCuL5(EtOH)(phen)]2(HL = -methylacrylic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), was prepared and its molecular structure determined by X-ray analysis. The complex is a tetranuclear molecule. Magnetic properties of the complex were also measured and are discussed. 相似文献

Thermodynamical, optical and dielectric characterisation of a material possessing ferroelectric SmC* and hexatic SmB* phases has been carried out. Phase identification has been done by miscibility studies. From the dielectric studies, a relaxation mechanism is observed in the low MHz region of the SmA* phase, which is related to the tilt fluctuation (soft mode) of the directors. In the SmC* phase, another collective relaxation mechanism has been observed in the kHz region, which is related to the phase fluctuation (Goldstone mode) of the directors. In the SmBh* phase, 2-weak relaxation modes are observed in the kHz and MHz frequency range, respectively, due to individual molecular rotations. 相似文献

Organic–inorganic hybrid liquid crystal (LC) gels have been synthesised by the thiol-ene reaction of a multifunctional cyclic siloxane, 1,3,5,7-tetravinyl-1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (TVMCTS) and alkane dithiols, 1,6-hexanedithiol (HDT) or 1,9-decanedithiol (DDT), in LC matrices, 4-cyano-4?-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) or 4′-n-octyl-4-cyano-biphenyl (8CB). The LC gels were prepared in an isotropic phase at 70°C or mesophases at 25°C using radical initiators. The phase transition temperatures from a mesophase to an isotropic phase of the resulting gels were lower than those of the original LCs. The gels containing 8CB (8CB gels) prepared at 25°C showed two phase transitions: smectic-to-nematic and nematic-to-isotropic transitions. By contrast, the 8CB gels synthesised in the isotropic phase showed only one phase transition from smectic phase directly to isotropic phase. Reaction conversions in the LC gels prepared at 70°C were higher than that in the gels prepared at 25°C. Scanning microscopic light scattering analysis of the LC gels cleared homogeneous small size mesh with a small amount of large defect. Polarisation micrographs of the LC gels showed framed optical textures derived from the LC molecules at room temperature. The LC gels containing more than 90 wt% of LC showed electro-optic response. 相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of some new 2,6‐disubstituted anthracenes are described. Symmetrical alkylphenyl derivatives exhibit smectic mesophases, whereas simpler structures are non‐mesogenic. One unsymmetrically substituted anthracene exhibits a narrow nematic phase. The potential for these molecules to act as phototriggers has been investigated but efficient photodimerisation cannot be achieved. 相似文献

We present the experimental evidence and theoretical studies of the para–ferroelectric phase transition in the chiral liquid crystal C12HH. The investigated compound presents a large SmC* range. Both microscopic observation and dielectric measurements show thermal hysteresis and coexistence phases at paraelectric (SmA)–ferroelectric (SmC*) phase transition. The thermal hysteresis is analysed in samples with different planar cell thickness. The SmA–SmC* phase transition under electric field is also investigated. Finally, the Landau free energy density is used to analyse the experimental measurements, showing a satisfactory agreement with experimental data. 相似文献

In this article, effervescence assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction with extractant removal by magnetic nanoparticles is presented for the first time. The extraction technique makes use of a mixture of 1-octanol and bare Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in acetic acid. This mixture is injected into the sample, which is previously fortified with carbonate, and as a consequence of the effervescence reaction, CO2 bubbles are generated making possible the easy dispersion of the extraction solvent. In addition, the MNPs facilitates the recovery of the 1-octanol after the extraction thanks to the interaction between hydroxyl groups present at the surface of the MNPs and the alcohol functional group of the solvent. The extraction mode has been optimized and characterized using the determination of six herbicides in water samples as model analytical problem. The enrichment factors obtained for the analytes were in the range 21–185. These values permit the determination of the target analytes at the low microgram per liter range with good precision (relative standard deviations lower than 11.7%) using gas chromatography (GC) coupled to mass spectrometry (MS) as analytical technique. 相似文献

Magnetic nanoparticles with average diameter in the range of 6.4-8.3 nni have been synthesized by a chemical co-precipitation of Fe(Ⅱ)and Fe(Ⅲ)salts in 1.5 M NH4OH solution.The size of the magnetic particles is dependent on both temperature and the ionic strength of the iron ion solutions.The magnetic particles formed at higher temperature or lower ionic strength were slightly larger than those formed at lower temperature or higher ionic strength respectively.In spite of the different reaction conditions,all the resultant nanoparticles are nearly spherical and have a similar crystalline structure.At 300 K,such prepared nanoparticles are superparam-agnetic.The saturation magnetizations for 7.8 and 6.4 nm particles are 71 and 63 emu/g respectively,which are only ~ 20-30% less than the saturation magnetization(90 emu/g)of bulk Fe3O4 Our results indicated that a control of the reaction conditions could be used to tailor the size of magnetic nanoparticles in free precipitation. 相似文献

Acicular shaped γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (major axis: 17±2 nm; minor axis: 1.7±1 nm) have been prepared using lauric acid as a non-aqueous medium. The products were investigated by IR, TG-DTA, XRD, Raman, SEM, TEM and magnetization measurements. For the preparation of pure γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, the suitable condition of the molar ratio of lauric acid to iron nitrate is set 2:1 and the appropriate temperature lies in the range 573–673 K. Besides, either pure α-Fe2O3 or a mixture of γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3 can also be obtained with the change of the molar ratio of lauric acid to iron nitrate. The experimental results indicate that the particle sizes, thermal stability and magnetic properties of the iron oxide strongly depend on the conditions in the preparation. 相似文献

In this paper we present an experimental study on the dynamic stability of suspended oil droplets such as those found in suspension polymerization processes. The system used in the present study was a mixture of ethylbenzene and 1,2-dichloroethane as a substitute for vinyl chloride monomer. The suspending agents included hydroxylpropyl methylcellulose and polyvinyl alcohol and their blends. We have measured the interfacial tension and the dynamic interfacial properties, such as shear viscosity and shear modulus or ridigity at the oil-water interfaces containing suspending agents in order to examine their effects on the droplet dynamic stability. It is concluded that the dynamic interfacial properties, and not the equilibrium interfacial tension, are the controlling parameters in droplet dynamic stability. 相似文献
