We discuss the representation theory of both the locally convex and non-locally convex topological*-algebras. First we discuss the*-representation of topological*-algebras by operators on a Hilbert space. Then we study those topological*-algebras so that every*-representation of which on a Hilbert space is necessarily continuous. It is well-known that each*-representation of aB *-algebra on a Hilbert space is continuous. We show that this is true for a large class of*-algebras more general thanB *-algebras, including certain non-locally convex*-algebras. Finally, we investigate the conditions under which a positive functional on a topological*-algebra is representable. The research of the first-named author was partially supported by an NSERC grant. G. Choquet and J. Deny have characterized the positive solutions of the convolution equation *= of measures on locally compact abelian groups, for a given positive measure . By elementary methods, we extend their characterization to locally compact nilpotent groups which complements the various existing results on the equation, and we work out the solutions explicitly for the Heisenberg groups and some nilpotent matrix groups, by finding all the exponential functions on these groups.  相似文献

Let A be a complex, commutative Banach algebra and let MA be the structure space of A. Assume that there exists a continuous homomorphism h : L1(G) → A with dense range, where L1(G) is the group algebra of a locally compact abelian group G. The main results of this paper can be summarized as follows: (a) If the dual space A* has the Radon-Nikodym property, then MA is scattered (i.e., it has no nonempty perfect subset) and . (b) If the algebra A has an identity, then the space A* has the Radon-Nikodym property if and only if . Furthermore, any of these conditions implies that MA is scattered. Several applications are given. Received: 29 September 2005  相似文献

This paper discusses linear regression of strongly correlated data that arises, for example, in magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium reconstructions. We have proved that, generically, the covariance matrix of the estimated regression parameters for fixed sample size goes to zero as the correlations become unity. That is, in this limit the estimated parameters are known with perfect accuracy. Simple examples are shown to illustrate this effect and the nature of the exceptional cases in which the covariance of the estimate does not go to zero.  相似文献

LetA be a commutative Banach algebra with a nonempty spectrum A. By weak we denote the relative weak topology induced on A by (A *,A **). In this note we study some properties of the topological space (A, weak) and present some applications of the results obtained and tools used to amenability, weakly compact homomorphisms, weakly compact subsets of the spectrum of the uniform algebras and to a characterization of the synthesizable ideals of the algebraA.  相似文献

For the unknown positive parameter σ2 in a general linear model , the two commonly used estimations are the simple estimator (SE) and the minimum norm quadratic unbiased estimator (MINQUE). In this paper, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the equivalence of the SEs and MINQUEs of the variance component σ2 in the original model ?, the restricted model , the transformed model , and the misspecified model .  相似文献

For a matrix over a complex commutative unital Banach algebra, necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of its group inverse, and more generally, its Drazin inverses. The conditions are easy to check and explicit formulas for the inverses are provided. Some properties of the inverses and an application to operator theory are discussed. This note is a continuation of an earlier work of the author.  相似文献

Factorizations of Wiener-Hopf type of elements of weighted Wiener algebras of continuous matrix-valued functions on a compact abelian group are studied. The factorizations are with respect to a fixed linear order in the character group (considered with the discrete topology). Among other results, it is proved that if a matrix function has a canonical factorization in one such matrix Wiener algebra then it belongs to the connected component of the identity of the group of invertible elements in the algebra, and moreover, the factors of the canonical factorization depend continuously on the matrix function. In the scalar case, complete characterizations of canonical and noncanonical factorability are given in terms of abstract winding numbers. Wiener-Hopf equivalence of matrix functions with elements in weighted Wiener algebras is also discussed. Model identification and discrimination are two major statistical challenges. In this paper we consider a set of models Mk for factorial experiments with the parameters representing the general mean, main effects, and only k out of all two-factor interactions. We consider the class D of all fractional factorial plans with the same number of runs having the ability to identify all the models in Mk, i.e., the full estimation capacity. The fractional factorial plans in D with the full estimation capacity for k?2 are able to discriminate between models in Mu for u?k*, where k*=(k/2) when k is even, k*=((k-1)/2) when k is odd. We obtain fractional factorial plans in D satisfying the six optimality criterion functions AD, AT, AMCR, GD, GT, and GMCR for 2m factorial experiments when m=4 and 5. Both single stage and multi-stage (hierarchical) designs are given. Some results on estimation capacity of a fractional factorial plan for identifying models in Mk are also given. Our designs D4.1 and D10 stand out in their performances relative to the designs given in Li and Nachtsheim [Model-robust factorial designs, Technometrics 42(4) (2000) 345-352.] for m=4 and 5 with respect to the criterion functions AD, AT, AMCR, GD, GT, and GMCR. Our design D4.2 stands out in its performance relative the Li-Nachtsheim design for m=4 with respect to the four criterion functions AT, AMCR, GT, and GMCR. However, the Li-Nachtsheim design for m=4 stands out in its performance relative to our design D4.2 with respect to the criterion functions AD and GD. Our design D14 does have the full estimation capacity for k=5 but the twelve run Li-Nachtsheim design does not have the full estimation capacity for k=5.  相似文献

To investigate the continuity of positive functionals on certain topological*-algebras, we consider general locally convex and non-locally convex topological*-algebras which need not have identity or continuity of involution. We discuss a new version of the Hahn-Banach theorem, with applications to linear and nonlinear functional analysis, convex analysis, and the theory of monotone multifunctions. We show how our result can be used to prove a localized version of the Fenchel-Moreau formula - even when the classical Fenchel-Moreau formula is valid, the proof of it given here avoids the problem of the vertical hyperplane. We give a short proof of Rockafellars fundamental result on dual problems and Lagrangians - obtaining a necessary and sufficient condition instead of the more usual sufficient condition. We show how our result leads to a proof of the (well-known) result that if a monotone multifunction on a normed space has bounded range then it has full domain. We also show how our result leads to generalizations of an existence theorem with no a priori scalar bound that has proved very useful in the investigation of monotone multifunctions, and show how the estimates obtained can be applied to Rockafellars surjectivity theorem for maximal monotone multifunctions in reflexive Banach spaces. Finally, we show how our result leads easily to a result on convex functions that can be used to establish a minimax theorem.  相似文献

The success of applying generalized complex orthogonal designs as space-time block codes recently motivated the definition of quaternion orthogonal designs as potential building blocks for space-time-polarization block codes. This paper offers techniques for constructing quaternion orthogonal designs via combinations of specially chosen complex orthogonal designs. One technique is used to build quaternion orthogonal designs on complex variables for any even number of columns. A second related technique is applied to maximum rate complex orthogonal designs to generate an infinite family of quaternion orthogonal designs on complex variables such that the resulting designs have no zero entries. This second technique is also used to generate an infinite family of quaternion orthogonal designs defined over quaternion variables that display a regular redundancy. The proposed constructions are theoretically important because they provide the first known direct techniques for building infinite families of orthogonal designs over quaternion variables for any number of columns.  相似文献

The general mixed linear model can be written as . In this paper, we mainly deal with two problems. Firstly, the problem of predicting a general linear combination of fixed effects and realized values of random effects in a general mixed linear model is considered and an explicit representation of the best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP) is derived. In addition, we apply the resulting conclusion to several special models and offer an alternative to characterization of BLUP. Secondly, we recall the notion of linear sufficiency and consider it as regards the BLUP problem and characterize it in several different ways. Further, we study the concepts of linear sufficiency, linear minimal sufficiency and linear completeness, and give relations among them. Finally, four concluding remarks are given.  相似文献

For a Lau algebra A, we study the Banach space WAP(A) of all weakly almost periodic functionals on A to obtain some equivalent conditions for the existence of topological left invariant means on a topological left introverted subspace X of A contained in WAP(A). Finally, we consider relations between the existence of a topological left invariant mean on X and a common fixed point property.  相似文献

The notion of linear sufficiency for the whole set of estimable functions in the general Gauss-Markov model is extended to the estimation of any special set of estimable functions in a general growth curve model. Some general results with respect to the concept of linear sufficiency are obtained, from which a necessary and sufficient condition is established for a linear transformation, {F1,F2}, of the observation matrix Y to have the property that there exists a linear function of which is the BLUE of the estimable functions .  相似文献

Let G be a locally compact amenable group, B(G) its Fourier-Stieltjes algebra and I be a closed ideal of it. In this paper we prove the following result: The ideal I has a unit element iff it is principal. This is the noncommutative version of the Glicksberg-Host-Parreau Theorem. The paper also contains an abstract version of this theorem.  相似文献
