The interaction of acetic acid (AA, CH(3)COOH), with solid water, deposited on metals, tungsten and gold, at 80 K, was investigated. We have prepared acid/water interfaces at 80 K, namely, acid layers on thin films of solid water and H(2)O adlayers on thin acid films; they were annealed between 80 and 200 K. Metastable impact electron spectroscopy (MIES) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy UPS(HeII) were utilized to obtain information on the electronic structure of the outermost surface from the study of the electron emission from the weakest bound MOs of the acids, and of the molecular water. Temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) provided information on the desorption kinetics, and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) provided information on the identification of the adsorbed species as well as on the water and acid crystallization. The results are compatible with the finding of ref 1 (preceding paper), made on the basis of DFT calculations, that AA adsorbs on ice as cyclic dimers. Above 120 K, a rearrangement of the AA dimers is suggested by a sharpening of the spectral features in the IR spectra and by spectral changes in MIES and UPS; this is attributed to the glass transition in AA around 130 K. Above 150 K the spectra transform into those characteristic for polycrystalline polymer chains. This structure is stable up to about 180 K; desorption of water takes place from underneath the AA film, and practically all water has desorbed through the AA film before AA desorption starts. There is no indication of water-induced deprotonation of the acid molecules. For the interaction of H(2)O molecules adsorbed on amorphous AA films, the comparison of MIES with the DFT results of ref 1 shows that the initial phase of exposure does not lead to the formation of a top-adsorbed closed water film at 80 K. Rather, the H(2)O molecules become attached to or incorporated into the preexisting AA network by H bonding; no water network is formed in the initial stage of the water adsorption. Also under these conditions no deprotonation of the acid can be detected.  相似文献

An ab initio molecular dynamics method was used to compare the ionic dissolution of soluble sodium chloride (NaCl) in water clusters with the highly insoluble silver chloride (AgCl). The investigations focused on the solvation structures, dynamics, and energetics of the contact ion pair (CIP) and of the solvent-separated ion pair (SSIP) in NaCl(H(2)O)(n) and AgCl(H(2)O)(n) with cluster sizes of n = 6, 10 and 14. We found that the minimum cluster size required to stabilize the SSIP configuration in NaCl(H(2)O)(n) is temperature-dependent. For n = 6, both configurations are present as two distinct local minima on the free-energy profile at 100 K, whereas SSIP is unstable at 300 K. Both configurations, separated by a low barrier (<10 kJ mol(-1)), are identifiable on the free energy profiles of NaCl(H(2)O)(n) for n = 10 and 14 at 300 K, with the Na(+)/Cl(-) pairs being internally solvated in the water cluster and the SSIP configuration being slightly higher in energy (<5 kJ mol(-1)). In agreement with the low bulk solubility of AgCl, no SSIP minimum is observed on the free-energy profiles of finite AgCl(H(2)O)(n) clusters. The AgCl interaction is more covalent in nature, and is less affected by the water solvent. Unlike NaCl, AgCl is mainly solvated on the surface in finite water clusters, and ionic dissolution requires a significant reorganization of the solvent structure.  相似文献

The interaction of CsF with multilayered water has been investigated with metastable impact electron spectroscopy (MIES) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy with HeI (UPS(HeI)). We have studied the emission from the ionization of H2O states 1b1, 3a1, and 1b2; of Cs5p and of F2p. We have prepared CsF-H2O interfaces, namely, CsF layers on thin films of multilayered water and vice versa; they were annealed between 80 and about 280 K. Up to about 100 K, a closed CsF layer can be deposited on H2O and vice versa; no interpenetration of the two components H2O and CsF could be observed. Above 110 K, CsF (H2O) layers deposited on thin H2O (CsF) films (stoichiometry CsF.1.5H2O) gradually transform into a mixed layer containing F, Cs, and H2O species. When annealing, H2O molecules can be detected up to 200 K from the mixed F-Cs-H2O layer (while for pure H2O desorption is essentially complete at 165 K); a water network is not formed under these conditions, and all H2O molecules are involved in bonding with Cs+ and F- ions. When CsF is deposited at 120 K on sufficiently thick water multilayers, full solvation of both F and Cs takes place, even for the species closest to the surface, as long as the stoichiometry remains CsF.(H2O)n with n > 3.  相似文献

Interfaces between films of benzenes (C(6)H(6);C(6)H(5)Cl;2-C(6)H(4)OHCl) and solid H(2)O on tungsten substrates were studied between 80 and 200 K with metastable impact electron spectroscopy (MIES) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy [UPS(HeI and II)]. The following cases were studied in detail: (i) Adsorption of the benzenes on solid water in order to simulate their interaction with ice particles, and (ii) deposition of water on benzene films in order to simulate the process of water precipitation. In all cases the prepared interfacial layers were annealed up to 200 K under in situ control of MIES and UPS. The different behavior of the interfaces for the three studied cases is traced back to the different mobilities of the molecules with respect to that of water. The interaction between H(2)O and the benzenes at the interfaces is discussed on the basis of a qualitative profile for the free energy of that component of the interface which has the larger mobility. Possible implications of the present results for atmospheric physics are briefly mentioned.  相似文献

The solvation of fluoride and chloride anions (F(-) and Cl(-), respectively) by water has been studied using effective fragment potentials (EFPs) for the water molecules and ab initio quantum mechanics for the anions. In particular, the number of water molecules required to fully surround each anion has been investigated. Monte Carlo calculations have been used in an attempt to find the solvated system X(-)(H(2)O)(n) (X = F, Cl) with the lowest energy for each value of n. It is predicted that 18 water molecules are required to form a complete solvation shell around a Cl(-) anion, where "complete solvation" is interpreted as an ion that is completely surrounded by solvent molecules. Although fewer water molecules may fully solvate the Cl(-) anion, such structures are higher in energy than partially solvated molecules, up to n > or = 18. Calculations on the F(-) anion suggest that 15 water molecules are required for a complete solvation shell. The EFP predictions are in good agreement with the relative energies predicted by ab initio energy calculations at the EFP geometries.  相似文献

The interaction of Na atoms with CH(3)OH films was studied with metastable impact electron spectroscopy (MIES) under UHV conditions. The films were grown at 90(+/-10) K on tungsten substrates and exposed to Na. Na-induced formation of methoxy (CH(3)O) species takes place, and Na atoms become ionized. At small Na exposures the outermost solvent layer remains largely intact as concluded from the absence of MIES signals caused by the reaction products. However, emission from CH(3)O, located at the film surface, occurs at larger exposures. In the same exposure range also Na species can be detected at the surface. The spectral feature from 3s Na ionization occurs at an energetic position different from that found for metals or semiconductors. The results are compared with density functional theory calculations [see Y. Ferro, A. Allouche, and V. Kempter, J. Chem. Phys. 120, 8683 (2004), preceding paper]. Experiment and theory agree in the energetic positions of the main spectral features from the methanol and sodium ionization. The calculations suggest that the 3s Na emission observed experimentally originates from solvated 3s electrons which are located far from the Na core and become stabilized by solvent molecules. The simultaneous emergence of emission from CH(3)O and from solvated 3s electrons suggests that the delocalization and, consequently, the solvation play an important role in the Na-induced formation of CH(3)O from CH(3)OH.  相似文献

The interaction of pyridine (C5H5N) with polycrystalline Ag and amorphous solid water (D2O) is compared. Metastable impact electron spectroscopy (MIES) and reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) were utilized to obtain information on the structure of the pyridine-Ag and pyridine-water interfaces. On polycrystalline Ag, C5H5N adsorbs with its molecular axis perpendicular to the surface whereby a work function decrease of 1.5 eV takes place during the build up of the first layer. In the second layer the molecular axis is tilted with respect to the surface normal. On amorphous solid water, C5H5N is initially adsorbed on top with its ring plane oriented preferentially near parallel with respect to the surface, reflecting the contribution of two different interactions to the bonding, the formation of a pi-hydrogen bond, and competitive bonding via the nitrogen lone pair. Coverage-driven reorientation takes place during the completion of the first monolayer and increases the average tilt angle. We have followed the growth of pyridine films up to the third layer which, according to RAIRS, shows clear signs of condensation. No embedding of pyridine species into the underlying water film can be noticed when heating up to desorption. The exposure of a pyridine film at 124 K to D2O molecules does not lead to on top adsorption. Instead, D2O becomes initially embedded into the pyridine film, and RAIRS indicates solvation of the pyridine species.  相似文献

We report here infrared spectra of protonated and lithiated valine with varying degrees of hydration in the gas phase and interpret them with the help of DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-31++G** level. In both the protonated and lithiated species our results clearly indicate that the solvation process is driven first by solvation of the charge site and subsequently by formation of a second solvation shell. The infrared spectra of Val x Li+ (H2O)4 and Val x H+ (H2O)4 are strikingly similar in the region of the spectrum corresponding to hydrogen-bonded stretches of donor water molecules, suggesting that in both cases similar extended water structures are formed once the charge site is solvated. In the case of the lithiated species, our spectra are consistent with a conformation change of the amino acid backbone from syn to anti accompanied by a change in the lithium binding from a NO coordination to OO coordination configuration upon addition of the third water molecule. This change in the mode of metal ion binding was also observed previously by Williams and Lemoff [J. Am. Soc. Mass Spectrom. 2004, 15, 1014-1024] using blackbody infrared radiative dissociation (BIRD). In contrast to the zwitterion formation inferred from results of the BIRD experiments upon addition of a third water molecule, our spectra, which are a more direct probe of structure, show no evidence for zwitterion formation with the addition of up to four water molecules.  相似文献

The interaction of formic acid (HCOOH) with solid water, deposited on tungsten at 80 K, was investigated. We have prepared and annealed formic acid (FA)/water interfaces (FA layers on thin films of solid water and H(2)O adlayers on thin FA films). Metastable impact electron spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (He I and II) were utilized to study the electron emission from the 10a' to 6a' molecular orbitals (MOs) of FA, and the 1b(1), 3a(1), and 1b(2) MOs of H(2)O. These spectra were compared with results of density-functional theory calculations on FA-H(2)O complexes reported in Ref. 14 [A. Allouche, J. Chem. Phys. 122, 234703(2005), (preceding paper)]. Temperature programmed desorption was applied for information on the desorption kinetics. Initially, FA is adsorbed on top of the water film. The FA spectra are distorted with respect to those from FA monomers; it is concluded that a strong interaction exists between the adsorbates. Even though partial solvation of FA species takes place during annealing, FA remains in the top layer up to the desorption of the water film. When H(2)O molecules are offered to FA films at 80 K, no water network is formed during the initial stage of water exposure; H(2)O molecules interact individually via H bonds with the formic acid network. Experiment and theory agree that no water-induced deprotonation of the formic acid molecules takes place.  相似文献

The rotational correlation time (tau(2R)) is determined for D(2)O (polar) and C(6)D(6) (apolar) in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim][Cl]) and hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF(6)]) by measuring (2)H (D) nuclear magnetic resonance spin-lattice relaxation time (T(1)) in the temperature range from -20 to 110 degrees C. The tau(2R) ratio of water to benzene (tau(WB)) was used as a measure of solute-solvent attraction. tau(WB) is 0.73 and 0.52 in [bmim][Cl] and [bmim][PF(6)], respectively, whereas the molecular volume ratio is as small as 0.11. The slowdown of the water dynamics compared to the benzene dynamics in ionic liquids is interpreted by the Coulombic attractive interaction between the polar water molecule and the anion. As for the anion effect, the rotational dynamics of water solvated by Cl(-) is slower than that solvated by PF(6) (-), whereas the rotational dynamics of benzene is similar in the two ionic liquids. This is interpreted as an indication of the stronger solvation by the anion with a larger surface charge density. The slowdown of the water dynamics via Coulombic solvation is actually significant only at water concentrations lower than approximately 9 mol dm(-3) at room temperature, and it is indistinguishable at temperatures above approximately 100 degrees C. The quadrupolar coupling constants determined for D(2)O and C(6)D(6) in the ionic liquids were smaller by a factor of 2-3 than those in the pure liquid state.  相似文献

Infrared spectra of various OH+ and H2O+ isotopomers solvated in solid argon are presented. The OH+ and H2O+ cations were produced by co-deposition of H2O/Ar mixture with high-frequency discharged Ar at 4 K. Detailed isotopic substitution studies confirm the assignments of absorptions at 3054.9 and 3040.0 cm(-1) to the antisymmetric and symmetric H-O-H stretching vibrations of H2O+ and 2979.6 cm(-1) to the O-H stretching vibration of OH+. The frequencies of H2O+ solvated in solid argon are red-shifted, whereas the frequency of OH+ is blue-shifted with respect to the gas-phase fundamentals. On the basis of previous gas-phase studies and quantum chemical calculations, the OH+ and H2O+ cations solvated in solid argon may be regarded as the OH+-Ar5 and H2O+-Ar4 complexes isolated in the argon matrix.  相似文献

The adsorption of water molecules (H(2)O) on sodium chloride cluster cations and anions was studied at 298 K over a mass range of 100-1200 amu using a custom-built laser desorption ionization reactor and mass spectrometer. Under the conditions used, the cations Na(3)Cl(2)(+) and Na(4)Cl(3)(+) bind up to three water molecules, whereas the larger cations, Na(5)Cl(4)(+) to Na(19)Cl(18)(+), formed hydrates with one or two only. The overall trend is a decrease in hydration with increasing cluster size, with an abrupt drop occurring at the closed-shell Na(14)Cl(13)(+). As compared to the cluster cations, the cluster anions showed almost no adsorption. Among smaller clusters, a weak adsorption of one water molecule was observed for the cluster anions Na(6)Cl(7)(-) and Na(7)Cl(8)(-). In the higher mass region, a substantial adsorption of one water molecule was observed for Na(14)Cl(15)(-). Density functional theory (DFT) computations were carried out for the adsorption of one molecule of H(2)O on the cations Na(n)Cl(n-1)(+), for n = 2-8, and the anions Na(n)Cl(n+1)(-), for n = 1-7. For each ion, the structure of the hydrate, the hydration energy, and the standard-state enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs energy of hydration at 298 K were computed. In addition, it was useful to compute the distortion energy, defined as the electronic energy lost due to weakening of the Na-Cl bonds upon adsorption of H(2)O. The results show that strong adsorption of a H(2)O molecule occurs for the linear cations only at an end Na ion and for the nonlinear cations only at a corner Na ion bonded to two Cl ions. An unexpected result of the theoretical investigation for the anions is that certain low-energy isomers of Na(6)Cl(7)(-) and Na(7)Cl(8)(-) bind H(2)O strongly enough to produce the observed weak adsorption. The possible implications of these results for the initial hydration of extended NaCl surfaces are discussed.  相似文献

The interaction of NaI with amorphous solid water (ASW) and methanol (MeOH) has been investigated with metastable impact electron spectroscopy (MIES), UPS(HeI), and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). We have studied the electron emission from the ionization of the highest-lying states of H(2)O, CH(3)OH, and of 5pI. We have prepared NaI layers on ASW (MeOH) films at about 105 K and annealed them up to about 200 K. Surface segregation of iodide is observed in ASW, as predicted for NaI aqueous solutions. On the other hand, surface segregation is not observed in MeOH, again as predicted for the interaction of NaI with liquid methanol. Electronic properties (ionization potentials, optical band gaps) and water binding energies are reported and are analyzed on the basis of available DFT results for hydrated NaI clusters.  相似文献

We report molecular dynamics studies on the solvation of sodium chloride in the 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquid ([BMI][Tf2N] IL). We first consider the potential of mean force for dissociating a single Na+Cl- ion pair, showing that the latter prefers to be undissociated rather than dissociated (by ca. 9 kcal/mol), with a free energy barrier of ca. 5 kcal/mol (at d approximately 5.2 A) for the association process. The preference for Na+Cl- association is also observed from a 100 ns molecular dynamics simulation of a concentrated solution, where the Na+Cl- ions tend to form oligomers and microcrystals in the IL. Conversely, the simulation of Na13Cl14- and Na14Cl13+ cubic microcrystals (with, respectively, Cl- and Na+ at the vertices) does not lead to dissolution in the IL. Among these, Na14Cl13+ is found to be better solvated than Na13Cl14-, mainly due to the stronger Na+...Tf2N- interactions as compared to the Cl-...BMI+ interactions at the vertices of the cube. We finally consider the solid/liquid interface between the 100 face of NaCl and the IL, revealing that, in spite of its polar nature, the crystal surface is solvated by the less polar IL components (CF3(Tf2N) and butyl(BMI) groups) rather than by the polar ones (O(Tf2N) and imidazolium(BMI) ring). Specific ordering at the interface is described for both Tf2N- anions and BMI+ cations. In the first IL layer, the ions are rather parallel to the surface, whereas in the second "layer" they are more perpendicular. A similar IL structure is found at the surface of the all-neutral Na0Cl0 solid analogue, confirming that the solvation of the crystal is rather "apolar", due to the mismatch between the IL and the crystal ions. Several comparisons with water, methanol, or different BMI+-based ILs as solvents are presented, allowing us to better understand the specificity of the ionic liquid-NaCl interactions.  相似文献

The determination of the solvation shell of Hg(II)-containing molecules and especially the interaction between Hg(II) and water molecules is the first requirement to understand the transmembrane passage of Hg into the cell. We report a systematic DFT study by stepwise solvation of HgCl(2) including up to 24 water molecules. In order to include pH and salinity effects, the solvation patterns of HgClOH, Hg(OH)(2) and HgCl(3)(-) were also studied using 24 water molecules. In all cases the hydrogen bond network is crucial to allow orbital-driven interactions between Hg(II) and the water molecules. DFT Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations starting from the stable HgCl(2)-(H(2)O)(24) structure revealed that an HgCl(2)-(H(2)O)(3) trigonal bipyramid effective solute appears and then the remaining 21 water molecules build a complete first solvation shell, in the form of a water-clathrate. In the HgCl(2), HgClOH, Hg(OH)(2)-(H(2)O)(24) optimized structures Hg also directly interacts with 3 water molecules from an orbital point of view (three Hg-O donor-acceptor type bonds). All the other interactions are through hydrogen bonding. The cluster-derived solvation energies of HgCl(2), HgClOH and Hg(OH)(2) are estimated to be -34.4, -40.1 and -47.2 kcal mol(-1), respectively.  相似文献

The gas-phase reactions of hydrated electrons with carbon dioxide and molecular oxygen were studied by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry. Both CO2 and O2 react efficiently with (H2O)n- because they possess low-lying empty pi* orbitals. The molecular CO2- and O2- anions are concurrently solvated and stabilized by the water ligands to form CO2(-)(H2O)n and O2(-)(H2O)n. Core exchange reactions are also observed, in which CO2(-)(H2O)n is transformed into O2(-)(H2O)n upon collision with O2. This is in agreement with the prediction based on density functional theory calculations that O2(-)(H2O)n clusters are thermodynamically favored with respect to CO2(-)(H2O)n. Electron detachment from the product species is only observed for CO2(-)(H2O)2, in agreement with the calculated electron affinities and solvation energies.  相似文献

We report a molecular dynamics study of the solvation of the UO2(2+) and Eu3+ cations and their chloro complexes in the [BMI][PF6][H2O] "humid" room-temperature ionic liquid (IL) composed of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium+ and PF6- ions and H2O in a 1:1:1 ratio. When compared to the results obtained in dry [BMI][PF6], the present results reveal the importance of water. The "naked" cations form UO2(H2O)5(2+) and Eu(H2O)9(3+) complexes, embedded in a shell of 7 and 8 PF6- anions, respectively. All studied UO2Cln(2-n) and EuCln(3-n) chloro complexes remain stable during the dynamics and coordinate additional H2O molecules in their first shell. UO2Cl4(2-) and EuCl6(3-) are surrounded by an "unsaturated" water shell, followed by a shell of BMI+ cations. According to an energy component analysis, the UO2Cl4(2-) and EuCl6(3-) species, intrinsically unstable toward dissociation, are more stable than their less halogenated analogues in the IL solution, due to the solvation forces. The different chloro species also interact better with the humid than with the dry IL, which hints at the importance of solvent humidity to improve their solubility. Humidity markedly modifies the local ion environment, with major consequences as far as their spectroscopic properties are concerned. We finally compare the aqueous interface of [BMI][PF6] and [OMI][PF6] ionic liquids, demonstrating the importance of imidazolium substituents (N-butyl versus N-octyl) to the nature of the interface and miscibility with water.  相似文献

Ion-molecule reactions of Mg(+)(H(2)O)(n), n ≈ 20-60, with O(2) and CO(2) are studied by Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry. O(2) and CO(2) are taken up by the clusters. Both reactions correspond to the chemistry of hydrated electrons (H(2)O)(n)(-). Density functional theory calculations predicted that the solvation structures of Mg(+)(H(2)O)(16) contain a hydrated electron that is solvated remotely from a hexa-coordinated Mg(2+). Ion-molecule reactions between Mg(+)(H(2)O)(16) and O(2) or CO(2) are calculated to be highly exothermic. Initially, a solvent-separated ion pair is formed, with the hexa-coordinated Mg(2+) ionic core being well separated from the O(2)(?-) or CO(2)(?-). Rearrangements of the solvation structure are possible and produce a contact-ion pair in which one water molecule in the first solvation shell of Mg(2+) is replaced by O(2)(?-) or CO(2)(?-).  相似文献

Pure rotational spectra of the sodium chloride-water complexes, NaCl-(H(2)O)(n) (n = 1, 2, and 3), in the vibronic ground state have been observed by a Fourier- transform microwave spectrometer coupled with a laser ablation source. The (37)Cl-isotopic species and a few deuterated species have also been observed. From the analyses of the spectra, the rotational constants, the centrifugal distortion constants, and the nuclear quadrupole coupling constants of the Na and Cl nuclei were determined precisely for all the species. The molecular structures of NaCl-(H(2)O)(n) were determined using the rotational constants and the molecular symmetry. The charge distributions around Na and Cl nuclei in NaCl are dramatically changed by the complex formation with H(2)O. Prominent dependences of the bond lengths r(Na-Cl) on the number of H(2)O were also observed. By a comparison with results of theoretical studies, it is shown that the structure of NaCl-(H(2)O)(3) is approaching to that of the contact ion-pair, which is considered to be an intermediate species in the incipient solvation process.  相似文献
