The fixed point property via dual space properties

A Banach space has the weak fixed point property if its dual space has a weak^∗ sequentially compact unit ball and the dual space satisfies the weak^∗ uniform Kadec-Klee property; and it has the fixed point property if there exists ε>0 such that, for every infinite subset A of the unit sphere of the dual space, A∪(−A) fails to be (2−ε)-separated. In particular, E-convex Banach spaces, a class of spaces that includes the uniformly nonsquare spaces, have the fixed point property.     

Exact Values of Some Geometric Constants of Orlicz Spaces

We present the exact values of nonsquare constants, von Neumann-Jordan constants, Jung constants, packing constants, weakly convergent sequence coefficients and normal structure coefficients in a class of reflexive Orlicz function spaces and sequence spaces equipped with Luxemburg norm and Orlicz norm.     

Uniformly nonsquare Banach spaces have the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings

It is shown that if the modulus Γ_X of nearly uniform smoothness of a reflexive Banach space satisfies , then every bounded closed convex subset of X has the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings. In particular, uniformly nonsquare Banach spaces have this property since they are properly included in this class of spaces. This answers a long-standing question in the theory.

On Newton's interpolation polynomials

In this paper functional analytic methods for nuclear locally convex spaces are applied to problems of analytic functions. The question is discussed whether the so-called Newton interpolation polynomials constitute a Schauder-basis in the space of analytic functions on the open unit circle (see Marku evi [3]). There are several different approaches to this problem, see, for instance, Walsh [7] and Gelfond [1]. Here we give a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of the interpolation points only. We consider the above space of analytic functions as a nuclear Kö-the-sequence space and use some deep theorems about nuclear spaces, such as the theorem of Dynin and Mitjagin (see Rolewicz [6], Pietsch An interesting connection with the theory of uniformly distributed sequences is mentioned.     

The Dunkl-Williams constant, convexity, smoothness and normal structure

In this paper we exhibit some connections between the Dunkl-Williams constant and some other well-known constants and notions. We establish bounds for the Dunkl-Williams constant that explain and quantify a characterization of uniformly nonsquare Banach spaces in terms of the Dunkl-Williams constant given by M. Baronti and P.L. Papini. We also study the relationship between Dunkl-Williams constant, the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and normal structure.     

A two-dimensional inequality and uniformly continuous retractions

We prove a new inequality valid in any two-dimensional normed space. As an application, it is shown that the identity mapping on the unit ball of an infinite-dimensional uniformly convex Banach space is the mean of n uniformly continuous retractions from the unit ball onto the unit sphere, for every n?3. This last result allows us to study the extremal structure of uniformly continuous function spaces valued in an infinite-dimensional uniformly convex Banach space.     

Real interpolation between martingale hardy and BMO spaces

In this paper, we consider the real interpolation with a function parameter between martingale Hardy and BMO spaces. An interpolation theorem for martingale Hardy and BMO spaces is formulated. As an application, real interpolation between martingale Lorentz and BMO spaces is given.     

Entropy function spaces and interpolation

We associate to every function space, and to every entropy function E, a scale of spaces Λp,q(E) similar to the classical Lorentz spaces Lp,q. Necessary and sufficient conditions for they to be normed spaces are proved, their role in real interpolation theory is analyzed, and a number of applications to functional and interpolation properties of several variants of Lorentz spaces and entropy spaces are given.     

A uniformly convex hereditarily indecomposable banach space

We construct a uniformly convex hereditarily indecomposable Banach space, using a method similar to the one of Gowers and Maurey in [GM], and the theory of complex interpolation for a family of Banach spaces of Coifman, Cwikel, Rochberg, Sagher, and Weiss ([CCRSW1]).     

Merotopological Spaces

In this paper we introduce a new topological-type of structured set called merotopological space. The appropriate morphisms are defined and characterizations of the corresponding initial and final structures are given. The resulting category contains as fully embedded subcategories not only the category of topological spaces and continuous maps but also the category of merotopic spaces and uniformly continuous maps, and, a fortiori, the category of nearness spaces and the category of uniform spaces. A functorial completion is constructed for merotopological spaces using bunches. A problem that has remained long open in the setting of nearness spaces is to find an internal characterization of the epireflective hull of the topological spaces. We solve the analogue of this problem in the setting of merotopological spaces. Applications to the Wyler prime closed filter compactification and to Taimanov's extension theorem are given.     

Convex functions, subdifferentiability and renormings

This paper through discussing subdifferentiability and convexity of convex functions shows that a Banach space admits an equivalent uniformly [locally uniformly, strictly] convex norm if and only if there exists a continuous uniformly [locally uniformly, strictly] convex function on some nonempty open convex subset of the space and presents some characterizations of super-reflexive Banach spaces.
