We present evidence for molecular resonances in a cold dense gas of rubidium Rydberg atoms. Single UV photon excitation from the 5s ground state to np Rydberg states (n=50-90) reveals resonances at energies corresponding to excited atom pairs (n-1)d+ns. We attribute these normally forbidden transitions to avoided crossings between the long-range molecular potentials of two Rydberg atoms. These strong van der Waals interactions result in avoided crossings at extremely long range, e.g., approximately 58 000 times the Bohr radius (a(0)) for n=70.  相似文献

Microwave ionization of Rydberg atoms is well described as the onset of classical chaos when the microwave frequency omega is less than the Kepler frequency 1/n(3). However, when omega>1/n(3), i.e., at high scaled frequency Omega=omegan(3)>1, classical ionization is predicted to be suppressed by quantum interference, an analogue to Anderson localization in a solid. We report time-resolved electron emission in experiments on ionization of rubidium Rydberg atoms (n=90) by few-cycle radio-frequency (RF) (1-10 MHz) pulses. The electron emission occurs in multiple bursts and strongly depends on the carrier-envelope phase as well as the duration and amplitude of the RF pulses. Remarkably, ionization is observed during a series of cycles with the same amplitude. Even at the low RF frequencies, ionization is not completed in a single cycle. Remixing of the states at the zero crossing of the field is believed to play an essential role. Similarities with the ionization process leading to high order harmonic generation are discussed.  相似文献

We describe new techniques involving trapped atoms as targets for measurements of electron-impact ionization cross sections out of an excited level. By directly detecting the ions formed by electron collisions, we have obtained the first experimental ionization cross sections out of the 5(2)P excited level in rubidium at energies from 40 to 300 eV.  相似文献

Laser-stimulated radiative transitions from states close to the ionization threshold to low-lying atomic levels are considered for protons (antiprotons) in a cold electron (positron) plasma and estimates for the resulting formation rate of hydrogen (antihydrogen) atoms in the ground state are given. The estimates apply to both laser-stimulated recombination and induced radiative stabilization of high Rydberg levels. First experiments concerning laser-stimulated recombination in merged beams of electrons and protons are discussed, which have confirmed the rate predictions for this process. In view of antihydrogen formation in a cold trapped positron plasma, the use of two successive stimulated transitions is considered for obtaining a high formation rate of ground-state atoms at relatively low radiation intensity.  相似文献

The effect of collisional transitions on the population distribution of excited atoms has been studied by considering a plasma in which the electron density varies with time. It has been found that for highly excited states, for which the ionization rate is much larger than that of electron-density variations, the collisional transitions are not important compared with the collisional ionization and recombination processes. However, for intermediate and lower excited states, they play an important role in making the population distribution approach Saha equilibrium with the electrons.  相似文献

利用平行板电极装置研究了四甲基硅在410~378 nm内的MPI光谱;利用TOF质谱仪研究了该分子在402~371 nm内若干个波长点处的TOF质谱;利用四极质谱装置研究了它在355 nm处的MPI质谱.测得了355 nm下Si(CH3)+n(n=1,2,3,4)及Si+的激光光强指数,以及其信号强度占总信号强度的分支比随光强的变化关系.据此,讨论了该分子MPI过程的可能通道,得出了Si+主要来自于母体分子的多光子解离-硅原子的电离、Si(CH3)+n(n=1,2,3)主要来自于Si(CH3)n(n=1,2,3)的自电离、Si(CH3)+4来自于母体分子的(3+1)电离的结论.  相似文献

The effect of free–bound and bound–bound resonance nonadiabatic transitions of an electron on electron–ion recombination rates in the plasma of a Ne/Xe and Ar/Xe inert gas mixture has been studied. A kinetic model of recombination has been proposed including energy relaxation in collisions with electrons, resonant electron capture to Rydberg states through three-body collisions of Xe+ ions with Ne or Ar atoms and dissociative recombination of NeXe+ or ArXe+ ions, and n → n' resonance transitions. It has been shown that effective resonance processes occurring in quasimolecular systems sharply increase both the recombination coefficient and the effect of collisions with neutral particles even at quite high degrees of ionization of the plasma.  相似文献

Herein electronic structure as a function of cluster size has been probed through ionization potentials measurements in order to derive general trends in the evolution of the structure and stability of lithium oxide clusters LinOm. The structural evolution was investigated by varying progressively the oxygen rate in order to observe transitions from the metallic Lin to the ionic structure (Li2O)n. We have demonstrated that this structural transition splits into three specific ranges. This result, in contrast with the general behavior observed with other electronegative elements combined with alkaline or alkaline-earth metal clusters, but similar to what is known about BanOm and CsnOm, constitutes a signature of a specific role played by the oxygen atoms when included inside a metallic cluster.  相似文献

Optical radiation related to the Balmer series (Hα, Hβ, Hγ) of hydrogen atoms is discovered when studying the isothermal reaction of trimeric acetone peroxide decomposition on the surface of oxidized tungsten in a static electric field with a strength of up to 4 × 106 V/cm at T = 300 K. The distance from the surface over which desorbing excited hydrogen atoms radiate is determined from the Stark splitting of the lines. Electronically excited atoms remaining on the surface ionize according to the surface ionization mechanism.  相似文献

We have observed electron impact ionization of highly excited sodium Rydberg atoms in ns and nd states, n=35-51, below E=2 eV electron kinetic energy with energy resolution 0.25 eV. Measured absolute cross sections near 0 eV range from sigma(35d) approximately 7 x 10(-10) to sigma(50d) approximately 4 x 10(-9) cm(2). The energy dependence is consistent with that of widely used binary encounter approximation cross sections, and sigma(n) follows a power law in n. The measured cross sections are 14 to 24 times larger than theoretically predicted values. This enhancement may signal the effect of large polarizabilities of high Rydberg states not yet accounted for in ionization theories.  相似文献

The complex interaction potentials arising in the approach of two metastable hydrogen 2s atoms are calculated and the cross sections for ionization, excitation transfer, and elastic scattering are predicted. The measured cross section for associative ionization at E = 4.1 meV equals 2x10(-15) cm (2). We calculate a total ionization cross section of 2x10(-13) cm (2), varying as E(-2/3) at higher energies. Thus it appears that dissociative ionization is the major ionization channel. We find also that double excitation transfer into two excited H(2p) atoms is still more probable with the large cross section of 9x10(-12) cm (2) at E = 4.1 meV varying as E(-1/2) at higher energies. The detection of the resulting Lyman alpha photons would provide a diagnostic test of our predictions.  相似文献

The coherent interaction between ensembles of helium Rydberg atoms and microwave fields in the vicinity of a solid-state coplanar waveguide is reported. Rydberg-Rydberg transitions, at frequencies between 25 and 38 GHz, have been studied for states with principal quantum numbers in the range 30-35 by selective electric-field ionization. An experimental apparatus cooled to 100 K was used to reduce effects of blackbody radiation. Inhomogeneous, stray electric fields emanating from the surface of the waveguide have been characterized in frequency- and time-resolved measurements and coherence times of the Rydberg atoms on the order of 250 ns have been determined. These results represent a key element in the development of an experimental architecture to interface Rydberg atoms with solid-state devices.  相似文献

The results of theoretical calculations of the blackbody ionization rates of lithium, potassium, and cesium atoms residing in Rydberg states are presented. The calculations are performed for nS, nP, and nD states in a wide range of principal quantum numbers, n = 8?65, for blackbody radiation temperatures T = 77, 300, and 600 K. The calculations are performed using the known quasi-classical formulas for the photoionization cross sections and for the radial matrix elements of transitions in the discrete spectrum. The effect of the blackbody-radiation-induced population redistribution between Rydberg states on the blackbody ionization rates measured under laboratory conditions is quantitatively analyzed. Simple analytical formulas that approximate the numerical results and that can be used to estimate the blackbody ionization rates of Rydberg atoms are presented. For the S series of lithium, the rate of population of high-lying Rydberg levels by blackbody radiation is found to anomalously behave as a function of n. This anomaly is similar to the occurrence of the Cooper minimum in the discrete spectrum.  相似文献
