Poly(dipentylsilylene) copolymers containing n‐pentyl‐n‐oct‐7‐enylsilane units were prepared by reductive coupling of the corresponding dichlorosilanes. Linear high molecular weight and some crosslinked polymer were obtained. The soluble products exhibited optical and thermal properties like poly(dipentylsilylene). Differential scanning calorimetry was used to investigate crystallization and to monitor thermal crosslinking. Vinyl functionalized side chains were hydrosilylated with dipentylsilane and dimethylchlorosilane and crosslinked via the side chains. Hydrosilylation with di‐n‐pentyl(trimethylsiloxypropyl)silane led to a partial hydroxy functionalization of the polysilylene and enabled anionic PEO grafting of the poly(dipentylsilylene). © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The relationship between nanostructure and properties in polysiloxane layered silicate nanocomposites is presented. Solvent uptake (swelling) in dispersed nanocomposites was dramatically decreased as compared to conventional composites, though intercalated nanocomposites and immiscible hybrids exhibited more conventional behavior. The swelling behavior is correlated to the amount of bound polymer (bound rubber) in the nanocomposites. Thermal analysis of the bound polymer chains showed an increase and broadening of the glass‐transition temperature and loss of the crystallization transition. Both modulus and solvent uptake could be related to the amount of bound polymer formed in the system. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 1595–1604, 2000  相似文献

Poly(2‐alkyl‐2‐oxazoline)s (PAOx) exhibit different crystallization behavior depending on the length of the alkyl side chain. PAOx having methyl, ethyl, or propyl side chains do not show any bulk crystallization. Crystallization in the heating cycle, that is, cold crystallization, is observed for PAOx with butyl and pentyl side chains. For PAOx with longer alkyl side chains crystallization occurs in the cooling cycle. The different crystallization behavior is attributed to the different polymer chain mobility in line with the glass transition temperature (Tg) dependency on alkyl side chain length. The decrease in chain mobility with decreasing alkyl side chain length hinders the relaxation of the polymer backbone to the thermodynamic equilibrium crystalline structure. Double melting behavior is observed for PButOx and PiPropOx which is explained by the melt‐recrystallization mechanism. Isothermal crystallization experiments of PButOx between 60 and 90 °C and PiPropOx between 90 and 150 °C show that PAOx can crystallize in bulk when enough time is given. The decrease of Tg and the corresponding increase in chain mobility at T > Tg with increasing alkyl side chain length can be attributed to an increasing distance between the polymer backbones and thus decreasing average strength of amide dipole interactions. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isothermal crystallization from the glassy state of oriented isotactic polystyrene (iPS) was studied using in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and in situ wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) studies. The oriented amorphous films of iPS were prepared by rolling the amorphous iPS film to a draw ratio of 3 or 4. In situ FTIR was used to investigate the ordering process of polymer chains prior to crystallization by measuring the change in the dichroic ratio with time, while in situ WAXD studies were used to investigate the development of the crystalline structure. The studies showed that the orientation process and the conformation change preceded crystallization. This observation suggests that polystyrene chains undergo an ordering process during the induction period of crystallization. The degree of orientation markedly increases with time in the induction period, suggesting that heat treatment of oriented amorphous materials under constraint provides a useful method for processing highly oriented materials. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Crystallization in a series of variable crosslink density poly(dimethyl‐diphenyl)siloxanes random block copolymers reinforced through a mixture of precipitated and fumed silica fillers has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The silicone composite studied was composed of 94.6 mol % dimethoylsiloxane, 5.1 mol % diphenylsiloxane, and 0.3 mol % methyl‐vinyl siloxane (which formed crosslinking after peroxide cure). The polymer was filled with a mixture of 21.6 wt % fumed silica and 4.0 wt % precipitated silica previously treated with 6.8 wt % ethoxy‐end‐blocked siloxane processing aid. Molecular weight between crosslinks and filler–polymer interaction strength were modified by exposure to γ‐irradiation in either air or in vacuo. Isothermal DMA experiments illustrated that crystallization at ?85 °C occurred over a 1.8 hour period in silica‐filled systems and 2.2–2.6 hours in unfilled systems. The crystallization kinetics for irradiated samples were found to be dependent on crosslink density. Irradiation in vacuo resulted in faster overall crystallization rates compared to air irradiation for the same crosslink density, likely due to a reduction in the interaction between the polymer chains and the silica filler surface for samples irradiated in air. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Crystallization studies at quiescent and shear states in isotactic polypropylene (iPP) containing nanostructured polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) molecules were performed with in situ small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC was used to characterize the quiescent crystallization behavior. It was observed that the addition of POSS molecules increased the crystallization rate of iPP under both isothermal and nonisothermal conditions, which suggests that POSS crystals act as nucleating agents. Furthermore, the crystallization rate was significantly reduced at a POSS concentration of 30 wt %, which suggests a retarded growth mechanism due to the molecular dispersion of POSS in the matrix. In situ SAXS was used to study the behavior of shear‐induced crystallization at temperatures of 140, 145, and 150 °C in samples with POSS concentrations of 10, 20, and 30 wt %. The SAXS patterns showed scattering maxima along the shear direction, which corresponded to a lamellar structure developed perpendicularly to the flow direction. The crystallization half‐time was calculated from the total scattered intensity of the SAXS image. The oriented fraction, defined as the fraction of scattered intensity from the oriented component to the total scattered intensity, was also calculated. The addition of POSS significantly increased the crystallization rate during shear compared with the rate for the neat polymer without POSS. We postulate that although POSS crystals have a limited role in shear‐induced crystallization, molecularly dispersed POSS molecules behave as weak crosslinkers in polymer melts and increase the relaxation time of iPP chains after shear. Therefore, the overall orientation of the polymer chains is improved and a faster crystallization rate is obtained with the addition of POSS. Moreover, higher POSS concentrations resulted in faster crystallization rates during shear. The addition of POSS decreased the average long‐period value of crystallized iPP after shear, which indicates that iPP nuclei are probably initiated in large numbers near molecularly dispersed POSS molecules. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(phenylene sulfide)/low‐melting‐point metal composites (PPSMs) with various loading levels were prepared by melt compounding. The nonisothermal crystallization behavior and transient viscoelastic properties were characterized by the DSC, POM, DMA, and parallel‐plate rheometer. The results reveal that the low‐melting‐point metal (LMPM) particles show nice dispersion at relative low content levels (< 30 wt %). The PPSMs composites present dual characteristics of both the filled polymer composite and polymer blend system in their transient viscoelastic behaviors, which results in occurrence of the stress overshoots with long relaxation time and nonzero residual stress especially at high shear levels. During the crystallization process, the presence of those deformable LMPM droplets facilitates the crystallization kinetics of PPS because of their flow‐promoting action. On the other hand, the LMPM has no heterogeneous nucleating effect and, only plays the role of inert filler, which results in the degradation of the crystal structure of PPS. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization of isotactic poly(4‐methylpentene‐1) in its stable tetragonal crystal modification based on the 72 helix conformation was achieved on three different low molecular weight organic substrates and on polytetrafluoroethylene. The contact face was always the (100) face, although the details of the epitaxial relationships generated one, two, or even three chain axis orientations in the polymer epitaxial overgrowth. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We covalently immobilized poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chains onto a fluorinated ethylene propylene copolymer (FEP) surface. On the FEP surface, aldehyde groups were first deposited by plasma polymerization of acetaldehyde or acrolein. Then, amino‐PEO chains were immobilized through Schiff base formation, which was followed by reduction stabilization with sodium cyanoborohydride. The PEO‐grafted polymer surfaces thus prepared were characterized by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy, contact‐angle measurements, and protein adsorption. The dramatic increase in the C O intensity of the high‐resolution XPS C 1s spectrum, together with an overall increase in oxygen content, indicated the successful attachment of PEO chains onto the acetaldehyde plasma surfaces. The amount of grafted PEO chains depended on the superfacial density of the plasma‐generated aldehyde groups. The grafted monoamino‐PEO chains formed a brushlike structure on the polymer surface, whereas the bisamino‐PEO chains predominately adopted a looplike conformation. The PEO surface had a regular morphology with greater roughness than the aldehyde surface underneath. Surface hydrophilicity increased with the grafting of PEO. Also, the bisamino‐PEO‐grafted surface had slightly higher surface hydrophilicity than its monoamino‐PEO counterpart. These PEO coatings reduced fibrinogen adsorption by 43% compared with the substrate FEP surface. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 2323–2332, 2000  相似文献

Poly(phenylenevinylene)‐based conjugated polymers with azobenzene groups in the main chains were prepared by the Pd‐catalyzed coupling polymerization of divinylarenes with dihaloarenes. The Pd‐catalyzed coupling polymerization of 4,4′‐divinylazobenzene with dihaloarenes such as 1,3‐dibromobenzene, 1,4‐dibromo‐2,5‐dihexylbenzene, 4,4′‐dibromoazobenzene, and 4,4′‐diiodoazobenzene resulted in polymers with poor solubility. In contrast, soluble polymers containing azobenzene moieties in the main chains were attainable from divinylbenzenes with 4,4′‐dihaloazobenzenes if either or both of the monomers possessed hexyl groups on the aromatic rings. The number‐average molecular weight of the polymer exceeded 10,000 under optimized conditions, and the polymer showed a remarkably redshifted absorption in the visible region (456 nm). 1H NMR and IR spectra supported that the polymers having only trans‐geometry for the double bonds. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of poly(butylene succinate‐co‐butylene 2‐methyl succinate)s were prepared through variations in the molar fraction of succinic acid to 2‐methyl succinic acid, and the effects of methyl substitution on the shear‐induced crystallization, nonisothermal crystallization behavior, dynamic rheological properties, crystal morphology, and mechanical properties were investigated. Introducing 2‐methyl succinic units reduced the melting temperature and crystallization temperature; this indicated that the substituted units retarded crystallization of the polymer. The Avrami exponents, estimated by modified Avrami plots, ranged from 2.1 to 3.5 and were a little diminished by the substitution. The substitution also reduced the rate of crystallization under shear. However, the effect was diminished with an increasing shear rate because most polymer chains were more regularly arranged at higher shear rates. Dynamic experiments in the solid state revealed that the peak on a plot of the loss tangent against the temperature became sharper at higher contents of the substituted unit, and the peak temperature, the glass‐transition temperature, was reduced as the content of 2‐methyl succinic acid increased. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction patterns showed that there was little effect of the 2‐methyl succinic acid unit on the crystal morphology. The toughness of the polymer was abruptly increased up to 350% at the expense of the tensile modulus. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 1759–1766, 2004  相似文献

Strain‐hardening behavior in the elongational viscosity of binary blends composed of a linear polymer and a crosslinked polymer, in which the molecular chains of the linear polymer were incorporated into the network chains of the crosslinked polymer, was studied. Blending the crosslinked polymer characterized as the gel just beyond the sol–gel transition point greatly enhanced the strain‐hardening behavior in the elongational viscosity, even though the amount of the crosslinked polymer was only 0.3 wt %. However, the crosslinked polymer, which was far beyond or below the sol–gel transition point, had little influence on the elongational viscosity as well as the shear viscosity. The stretching of the chain sections between the crosslink points was responsible for the strain‐hardening behavior. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The crystal structure and crystallization behavior of a series of poly(ester amide)s derived from L ‐tartaric acid, 1,6‐hexanediamine, and 6‐amino‐1‐hexanol were examined. The study included aregic polymers containing 5, 10, and 20% of ester groups in addition to the syndioregic polymer containing equal amounts of amide and ester groups. X‐ray diffraction data revealed that all the aregic poly(ester amide)s adopt the same crystal structure as the parent polyamide made of L ‐tartaric acid, and 1,6‐hexanediamine. In this structure, chains are slightly compressed and arranged as in the α‐form of nylon 66. Solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) revealed that ester groups are excluded from the crystal phase except for the case of the syndioregic polymer. Isothermal crystallization kinetics was analyzed according to the Avrami theory. Crystallization rates were found to decrease regularly with increasing contents in ester groups and with increasing crystallization temperature. Avrami exponent values close to 2 were found whereas spherulitic morphologies were observed by optical microscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) results are consistent with the differential scanning calorimetric results and verify the anomalous crystallization of water in 50% poly(vinyl methyl ether) aqueous solution during heating. Below about ?34 °C, the water/polymer complex was not damaged, and the water still associated with the polymer. When heating to about ?34 °C, the associated water started to free from the unpolar (methyl group) and polar‐site (ether‐oxygen group) interaction fields of polymer gradually. Then crystallization of water was induced in this system at temperatures ranging from ?34 to ?24 °C. The FTIR data also indicate that the structure of water started to change first upon forming strong H bonds among water molecules, and then the dehydration of the polymer began to proceed subsequently when the anomalous crystallization of water occurred. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ordered poly(ethylene)‐poly(vinylcyclohexane) (PE‐PVCH) block copolymers are employed to study the crystallization of tethered PE in confined geometries. The high Tg of the PVCH component of these materials forces PE chains to crystallize in well‐defined geometries dictated by the mesophase structure of the block copolymer. Effects of chain tethering on crystallization are examined through comparison of singly‐tethered PE chains in PE‐PVCH (EV) diblocks and doubly‐tethered PE in PVCH‐PE‐PVCH (VEV) triblocks. Crystallinity is independent of the block copolymer mesophase structure in both the EV and VEV systems, although crystallinity in VEV depends on the molecular weight of the PE block of the copolymer. Melting temperature data indicate that spatial confinement reduces crystallite size in EV and VEV, and that the double tethering of PE chains in VEV reduces crystallite size further through topological constraints. Crystal nucleation and growth depend strongly on the type of microstructure in both EV and VEV block copolymers. Differences in the overall rate of crystallization are correlated with the dimensional continuity of the PE microdomains. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The influence of ZnO nanoparticles on the crystalline structures of nylon‐6 under different crystallization conditions (annealing at different temperatures from the amorphous solid, isothermal crystallization from the melt at different temperatures, and crystallization from the solution) has been examined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared. ZnO nanoparticles can induce the γ‐crystalline form in nylon‐6 when it is cooled from the melted state and annealed from the amorphous solid. This effect of ZnO nanoparticles increases with decreasing particle size and changes under different crystallization conditions. The effects of ZnO nanoparticles on the crystallization kinetics of nylon‐6 have also been studied with DSC. The results show that ZnO nanoparticles have two competing effects on the crystallization of nylon‐6: inducing the nucleation but retarding the mobility of polymer chains. Finally, the melting behavior of the composites has been investigated with DSC, and the multiple melting peaks of composites containing ZnO nanoparticles and pure nylon‐6 are ascribed to the reorganization of imperfect crystals. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(butylene terephthalate) has two crystalline forms of α and β. The α form is more stable and is transformed into the β form by stretching. The α↔β transition stress was measured at various temperatures with the use of an X‐ray diffraction system with imaging plates, and the relationship between the transition stress and temperature was obtained. Further, using the X‐ray diffraction system, the drawing behavior of the nearly amorphous, undrawn polymer film was observed by taking up dynamically a series of X‐ray diffraction patterns while a film was being drawn. The α form never occurred during drawing at any temperature because the stress to draw the film exceeded the α→β transition stress. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. As‐spun poly(ethylene‐2,6‐naphthalate) (PEN) fibers (i.e., precursors) prepared from high molecular weight polymer were drawn and/or annealed under various conditions. Structure and property variations taking place during the treatment process were followed via wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS), small‐angle X‐ray scattering, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and mechanical testing. Both the WAXS and DSC measurements of the cold‐drawn samples stretched from a low‐speed‐spun amorphous fiber indicate that strain‐induced crystallization can occur at a temperature below the glass‐transition temperature and that the resultant crystal is in the α‐form modification. In contrast, when the same precursor was subjected to constrained annealing, its amorphous characteristics remained unchanged even though the annealing was performed at 200 °C. These results may imply that the application of stretching stress is more important than elevated temperatures in producing α‐form crystallization. The crystalline structure of the hot‐drawn samples depends significantly on the morphology of the precursor fibers. When the precursor was wound at a very low speed and in a predominantly amorphous state, hot drawing induced the formation of crystals that were apparently pure α‐form modification. For the β‐form crystallized precursors wound at higher speeds, a partial crystalline transition from the β form to the α form was observed during the hot drawing. In contrast with the mechanical properties of the as‐spun fibers, those of the hot‐drawn products are not improved remarkably because the draw ratio is extremely limited for most as‐spun fibers in which an oriented crystalline structure has already formed. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
