The double melting behavior of a thermotropic liquid crystalline polyimide was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light microscopy (PLM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). This liquid crystalline polyimide exhibited a normal melting peak around 278 °C and transformed into a smectic A phase. The smectic A phase changed to nematic phase upon heating to 298 °C, then became isotropic melt around 345 °C. The samples annealed or isothermally crystallized at lower temperature showed double melting endotherms during heating scan. The annealing‐induced melting endotherm was highly dependent on annealing conditions, whereas the normal melting endotherm was almost not influenced by annealing when the annealing temperature was low. Various possibilities for the lower melting endotherm are discussed. The equilibrium melting points of both melting peaks were extrapolated to be 283.2 °C. Combined analytical results showed that the double melting peaks were from the melting of the two types of crystallites generated from two crystallization processes: a slow and a fast one. Fast crystallization may start from the well‐aligned liquid crystal domains, whereas the slow one may be from the fringed or amorphous regions. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The crystalline structure of polyamide‐12 (PA12) was studied by solid‐state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as well as by synchrotron wide‐ and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS). Isotropic and oriented PA12 showed different NMR spectra ascribed to γ‐ and γ′‐crystalline modifications, respectively. On the basis of the position of the first diffraction peak, the isotropic γ‐form and the oriented γ′‐form were shown to be with hexagonal crystalline lattice at room temperature. When heated, the two PA12 polymorphs demonstrated different behaviors. Above 140 °C, the isotropic γ‐PA12 partially transformed into α‐modification. No such transition was observed with the oriented γ′‐PA12 phase even after annealing at temperatures close to melting. A γ′–γ transition was observed here only after isotropization by melting point. Various structural parameters were extracted from the WAXS and SAXS patterns and analyzed as a function of temperature and orientation: the degree of crystallinity, the d‐spacings, the Bragg's long spacings, the average thicknesses of the crystalline (lc) and amorphous (la) phases, and the linear crystallinity xcl within the lamellar stacks. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(4‐methyl‐1‐pentene) (PMP) membranes were modified through isothermal annealing to investigate the change of their crystalline structure and rigid and mobile amorphous fractions (RAF and MAF), assuming a three‐phase model, affected the gas transport behavior. The crystalline structure was characterized by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) techniques, and the free volume properties were analyzed by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Compared with the pristine membrane, the annealed membranes show higher crystallinity; the crystals undergo partial structural change from form III to form I. The lamellar crystal thickness, rigid amorphous fraction thickness, and long period in the lamellar stacks increase with crystallinity. The annealed PMP membranes exhibit higher permeability due to the increase in larger size free volumes in MAF and higher selectivity due to the increase in smaller size free volumes in RAF, respectively. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The objective of this work was to use both X‐ray and differential scanning calorimetry techniques in a comparative study of the lamellar and crystalline structures of heterogeneous and homogeneous ethylene‐α‐copolymers. The samples differed in the comonomer type (1‐butene, 1‐hexene, 1‐octene, and hexadecene), comonomer content, and catalyst used in the polymerizations. Step crystallizations were performed with differential scanning calorimetry, and the crystallinity and lamellar thicknesses of the different crystal populations were determined. Wide‐angle X‐ray scattering was used to determine crystallinities, average sizes of the crystallites, and dimensions of the orthorhombic unit cell. The average thickness, separation of the lamellae, and volume fractions of the crystalline phase were determined by small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). The results revealed that at densities below 900 kg/m3, polymers were organized as poorly organized crystal bundles. The lamellar distances were smaller and the lamellar thickness distributions were narrower for the homogeneous ethylene copolymers than for the heterogeneous ones. Step‐crystallization experiments by SAXS demonstrated that the long period increased after annealing. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 39: 1860–1875, 2001  相似文献

The temperature dependence of thermal, morphological, and rheological properties of amphiphilic polyurethanes was examined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS), small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), rheological measurements, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Multiblock (MPU) and triblock (TPU) polyurethanes were synthesized with two crystallizable segments—poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as a hydrophilic block and poly(tetramethylene oxide) (PTMO) as a hydrophobic block. DSC and WAXS measurements demonstrated that the microphase of MPUs in the solid state is dominantly affected by the PEO crystalline phase. However, high‐order peaks were not observed in the SAXS measurements because the crystallization of the PEO segments in MPUs was retarded by poor sequence regularity. The microphase in the melt state was induced by the hydrogen bonding between the N? H group of hexamethylene diisocyanate linkers and the ether oxygen of PEO or PTMO blocks. As the temperature increased, the smaller micro‐phase‐separated domains were merged into the larger domains, and the liquidlike ordering was eventually disrupted because of the weakening hydrogen bonding. However, the fully homogeneous state of an MPU with a molar ratio of 5/5 PEO/PTMO (MPU55) was not confirmed even at much higher temperatures with both SAXS and rheological measurements. However, the SAXS patterns of TPU showed weak but broad second‐order peaks below the melting temperature of the PEO block. Compared with MPU55, the ordering of the TPU crystalline lamellar stacks was enhanced because of the high sequence regularity and the low hydrogen‐bonding density. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The fine structure in the solid state and phase transition behavior of newly synthesized comb copolymers having fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon side‐chains were investigated by temperature controlled wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). From the WAXD profiles, two kinds of short spacing peaks based on the formation of the subcell for fluorinated and hydrogenated side‐chains were confirmed at 5.0 and 4.1 Å, respectively. Furthermore, two kinds of endothermic peaks, which corresponded to melting peaks of both side‐chain crystals, appeared in heating process of the DSC thermograms. From these experimental findings, the phase separation structure having the independently packed immiscible side‐chain crystalline was formed in the whole polymer crystal. In addition, it was found that these comb polymers formed highly ordered (double) layer structure estimated using WAXD and small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). These fluorinated comb copolymers form a monolayer on the water surface and their transferred film with phase‐separated structure at nanometer size on solid. There were hydrogenated domains at 10–20 nm diameter scales in these phase separated surface structure of monolayers. From these experimental results, these copolymer monolayers are expected to be used as a new molecular device such as nanolithography based on the surface patterning of polymer nanomaterials. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The microphase structure of a series of polystyrene‐b‐polyethylene oxide‐b‐polystyrene (SEOS) triblock copolymers with different compositions and molecular weights has been studied by solid‐state NMR, DSC, wide and small angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS). WAXS and DSC measurements were used to detect the presence of crystalline domains of polyethylene‐oxide (PEO) blocks at room temperature as a function of the copolymer chemical composition. Furthermore, DSC experiments allowed the determination of the melting temperatures of the crystalline part of the PEO blocks. SAXS measurements, performed above and below the melting temperature of the PEO blocks, revealed the formation of periodic structures, but the absence or the weakness of high order reflections peaks did not allow a clear assessment of the morphological structure of the copolymers. This information was inferred by combining the results obtained by SAXS and 1H NMR spin diffusion experiments, which also provided an estimation of the size of the dispersed phases of the nanostructured copolymers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two ABA‐type liquid crystalline oligomers were newly synthesized, where A was a mesogenic group and B was polyolefin whose molecular mass was 2470. The A segment was prepared from p‐hydroxyl benzoic acid and terephalic acid. The elastomeric films, whose moduli at 20% elongation were 0.4–1.0 MPa, were obtained by solution casting of the ABA‐type oligomers. Dynamic mechanical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry measurement showed the glass transition of amorphous polyolefin segments, the melting of mesogenic groups, and the meso‐to‐isotropic transition of liquid crystalline phase. The formation of microphase‐separated structures was confirmed by a small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) measurement. The presence of hexagonal cylinder domains, which were attributed to the aggregation of mesogenic groups in the polyolefin matrix, was also detected by SAXS. These liquid crystalline oligomers showed anisotropy under the crossed Nicoles, and the textures were observed to be nematic. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The crystallization behavior of isotactic propylene‐1‐hexene (PH) random copolymer having 5.7% mole fraction of hexene content was investigated using simultaneous time‐resolved small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques. For this copolymer, the hexene component cannot be incorporated into the unit cell structure of isotactic polypropylene (iPP). Only α‐phase crystal form of iPP was observed when samples were melt crystallized at temperatures of 40 °C, 60 °C, 80 °C, and 100 °C. Comprehensive analysis of SAXS and WAXD profiles indicated that the crystalline morphology is correlated with crystallization temperature. At high temperatures (e.g., 100 °C) the dominant morphology is the lamellar structure; while at low temperatures (e.g., 40 °C) only highly disordered small crystal blocks can be formed. These morphologies are kinetically controlled. Under a small degree of supercooling (the corresponding iPP crystallization rate is slow), a segmental segregation between iPP and hexene components probably takes place, leading to the formation of iPP lamellar crystals with a higher degree of order. In contrast, under a large degree of supercooling (the corresponding iPP crystallization rate is fast), defective small crystal blocks are favored due to the large thermodynamic driving force and low chain mobility. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) gives information on lamellar stacks in semicrystalline polymers. SAXS experiments have been used to follow the melting transition that occurs over a temperature range of 10 °C or more. One common feature is the increase in the average period by 50–100% during the melting process, a change that is often attributed to sequential melting of crystals in the lamellar stack. A quantitative treatment shows that the scattering experiment indicates only the original period, not the average period that increases throughout sequential melting. With this model, I discuss the relation between structural parameters of the melting structure and quantities derived from the SAXS intensity, the correlation function, and the interface distribution function. Uncertainties persist in our understanding of polymer melting. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 39: 2454–2460, 2001  相似文献

We here reported the dual melting behaviors with a large temperature difference more than 50 °C without discernible recrystallization endothermic peak in isomorphous poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (P(HB‐co‐HV)) with a high HV content of 36.2 mol %, and the structure evolution upon heating was monitored by in situ synchrotron wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction/small‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXD/SAXS) to unveil the essence of such double endothermic phenomena. It illustrated that the thinner lamellae with the larger unit cell and the thicker crystals having the smaller unit cell were melted around the first low and second high melting ranges, respectively. By analyzing in situ WAXD/SAXS data, and then coupling the features of melting behavior, the evolution of the parameters of both crystal unit cell and lamellar crystals, we proposed that the thinner unstable lamellae possess a uniform structure with HV units total inclusion, and the thicker stable lamellae reflect the sandwich structure with HV units partial inclusion. It further affirmed that the thicker sandwich and thinner uniform lamellae formed during the cooling and subsequent isothermal crystallization processes, respectively. These findings fully verify that it is the change of structure of lamellae rather than the melting/recrystallization that is responsible for double melting peaks of isomorphous P(HB‐co‐36.2%HV), and enhance our understanding upon multiple endothermic behaviors of polymers. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The structural development during the melt spinning and subsequent annealing of polybutene‐1 fibers was studied with in situ wide‐angle X‐ray scattering techniques. The online spinning apparatus consisted of a vertically translating extruder that allowed different distances from the spinneret to the stationary X‐ray beam to be sampled. For all take‐up speeds examined, phase II crystals mainly were formed, with only a small population of phase I crystals existing. As the take‐up speed was increased, the crystallinity also increased, indicating that strain‐induced crystallization prevailed. The crystalline orientations observed online were very close to perfect alignment with the fiber axis. In addition, annealing studies were performed to study aspects of the gradual phase II to phase I transformation as functions of time and prior processing take‐up speed. This transformation was strongly dependent on the take‐up speed. The dependence appears to be connected to local stress enhancement via chains connecting crystallites. The results also seem to indicate that at low take‐up speeds (17 mpm) there is a series connectivity of amorphous and crystalline components in the fiber, whereas at greater take‐up speeds (100 and 250 mpm), the morphology grows into some type of three‐dimensional network, possibly a shish–kebob‐type morphology. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The morphologies of a series of blown films and machine‐direction‐oriented (MDO) films, all produced from high density polyethylene, were characterized. In the blown film process, the crystalline morphology develops while the melt is under extensional stress. In the MDO process, drawing takes place in the solid state and deforms the crystalline morphology of the starting film. The films were characterized by wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS), small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and atomic force microscopy to determine the lamellar morphology. The effect of the type of deformation on the lamellar morphology was studied and relationships were developed between the lamellar and polymer chain morphology using SAXS and WAXS. Blown and MDO films were found to have very different morphologies. However, an integrated mechanism was developed linking the sequential events in the deformation and morphology development in blown and MDO films. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We examine the crystallization and chain conformation behavior of semicrystalline poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and amorphous poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) mixtures with wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), and small‐angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments. For blends with PEO weight fractions (wtPEO) greater than or equal to 0.3, below the melting point of PEO, the WAXD patterns reveal that crystalline PEO belongs to the monoclinic system. The unit‐cell parameters are independent of wtPEO. However, the bulk crystallinity determined from WAXD decreases as wtPEO decreases. The scattered intensities from SAXS experiments show that the systems form an ordered crystalline/amorphous lamellar structure. In a combination of WAXD and SAXS analysis, the related morphological parameters are assigned correctly. With the addition of amorphous PVAc, both the average amorphous layer thickness and long spacing increase, whereas the average crystalline layer thickness decreases. We find that a two‐phase analysis of the correlation function from SAXS, in which the scattering invariant is linearly proportional to the volume fraction of lamellar stacks, describes quantitatively the crystallization behavior of PEO in the presence of PVAc. When wtPEO is close to 1, the samples are fully spaced‐filled with lamellar stacks. As wtPEO decreases from 1.0 to 0.3, more PVAc chains are excluded from the interlamellar region into the interfibrillar region. The fraction outside the lamellar stacks, which is completely occupied with PVAc chains, increases from 0 to 58%. Because the radius of gyration of PVAc with a random‐coil configuration determined from SANS is smaller than the average amorphous layer thickness from SAXS, we believe that the amorphous PVAc chains still persist with a random‐coil configuration even when the blends form an ordered structure. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The multiple melting behavior of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated by real‐time small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and wide angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) measurements coupling with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Semicrystalline specimens prepared by a continuous cooling process showed lengthening of the Bragg period during the progress of double melting. A model of variable thickness of lamella was proposed to fit to the SAXS patterns and revealed that both the crystalline lamella and the amorphous layer contributed to the increase in Bragg period while the later dominated the contribution. The model of variable thickness although satisfied the SAXS data was unable to compromise the data from other probing tools. A modification of the model proposed that each lamella piling up to construct the stacks in the crystallites was itself nonuniform in thickness. The modification with the parallel occurrence of the mechanism of surface melting and crystallization successfully compromised the observations from SAXS, DSC, and optical microscopy and provided a new perspective for the explanation to lengthening of the Bragg period related to multiple melting behavior. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Formation of shish‐kebab crystals due to the coil–stretch transition under shear in the molten state using a bimodal polyethylene system with high molecular weight (HMW) fraction having different branch content was investigated. In specific, in situ small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) techniques were used to study the structure evolution of shish‐kebab crystals at high temperatures under simple shear. The SAXS results revealed that with the increase of branch content, shish‐kebab crystals became more stable at high temperatures (e.g., 139 °C). However, the shish length of the bimodal PE containing 0.11% branch was shorter than that with no branch. The WAXD results showed that the degree of crystallization for bimodal PE with HMW fraction having 0.11% branch increased with time but reached a plateau value of 1%, while that with no branch increased continuously till 11%. Furthermore, the crystal orientation of bimodal PE with HMW fraction having 0.11% branch was above 0.9 and maintained at a constant value, while that with no branch decreased from 0.9 to 0.1 upon relaxation. This study indicates that even though the crystallizability of the HMW fraction with branch content decreased, they could effectively stabilize the shear‐induced crystalline structure with shorter shish‐kebab crystals. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of the uniaxial and biaxial stretching and subsequent solution annealing of extrusion‐cast polyamide‐11 films on the crystalline structure and morphology was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). The extrusion‐cast polyamide‐11 films exhibited elevations in the glass‐transition and cold‐crystallization temperatures with a constant crystallinity and a constant melting point during aging under room conditions (20–26 °C and 20–31% relative humidity). WAXD and SAXS suggested that chain‐folded lamellae of coexisting α‐ and β‐crystals existed in all the stretched polyamide‐11 films. WAXD pole figures indicated that hydrogen bonds in the hydrogen‐bonded sheets of these two crystalline forms apparently formed between antiparallel chain molecules. The unit cell parameters [a = 9.52 Å, b = 5.35 Å, c = 14.90 Å (chain axis), α = 48.5°, β = 90°, and γ = 74.7° for a triclinic α form and a = 9.52 Å, b = 14.90 Å (chain axis), c = 4.00 Å, α = 90°, β = 67.5°, and γ = 90° for a monoclinic β form] for polyamide‐11 crystals were proposed according to the results of this study and the results of previous investigators. The unit cell parameters of the stretched extrusion‐cast polyamide‐11 films varied, depending on the stretching conditions (the stretch temperature and stretch ratio). As the stretch temperature and stretch ratio were increased, the crystal became more similar to the form described previously and was accompanied by an increase in the long spacing of crystalline lamellae. Annealing the stretched films in a boiling 20% formic acid solution made slightly more perfected crystals. The hydrogen‐bonding α(010) + β(002) planes, which are nearly parallel to both amide group planes and zigzag methylene sequence planes of the biaxially stretched films were found to be parallel to the film surface. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The melting behavior of poly(L ‐lactic acid) film crystallized from the glassy state, either isothermally or nonisothermally, was studied by wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and temperature‐modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC). Up to three crystallization and two melting peaks were observed. It was concluded that these effects could largely be accounted for on the basis of a “melt‐recrystallization” mechanism. When molecular weight is low, two melting endotherms are readily observed. But, without TMDSC, the double melting phenomena of high molecular weight PLLA is often masked by an exotherm just prior to the final melting, as metastable crystals undergo melt‐recrystallization during heating in the DSC. The appearance of a double cold‐crystallization peak during the DSC heating scan of amorphous PLLA film is the net effect of cold crystallization and melt‐recrystallization of metastable crystals formed during the initial cold crystallization. Samples cold‐crystallized at 80 and 90 °C did not exhibit a long period, although substantial crystallinity developed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Large melting point depressions for organic nanocrystals, in comparison with those of the bulk, were observed in an associative polymer: telechelic, pyrene‐labeled poly(dimethylsiloxane) (Py‐PDMS‐Py). Nanocrystals formed within nanoaggregates of pyrenyl units that were immiscible in poly(dimethylsiloxane). For 5 and 7 kg/mol Py‐PDMS‐Py, physical gels resulted, with melting points exceeding 40 °C and with small‐angle X‐ray scattering peaks indicating that the crystals were nanoconfined, were 2–3 nm long, and contained roughly 18–30 pyrenyl dye end units. In contrast, 30 kg/mol Py‐PDMS‐PY was not a gel and exhibited no scattering peak at room temperature; however, after 12 h of annealing at ?5 °C, multiple melting peaks were present at 5–30 °C. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
