Graft and star copolymers having poly(methacrylate) backbone and ethylene–propylene random copolymer (EPR) branches were successfully synthesized by radical copolymerization of an EPR macromonomer with methyl methacrylate (MMA). EPR macromonomers were prepared by sequential functionalization of vinylidene chain‐end group in EPR via hydroalumination, oxidation, and esterification reactions. Their copolymerizations with MMA were carried out with monofunctional and tetrafunctional initiators by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Gel‐permeation chromatography and NMR analyses confirmed that poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)‐g‐EPR graft copolymers and four‐arm (PMMA‐g‐EPR) star copolymers could be synthesized by controlling EPR contents in a range of 8.6–38.1 wt % and EPR branch numbers in a range of 1–14 branches. Transmission electron microscopy of these copolymers demonstrated well‐dispersed morphologies between PMMA and EPR, which could be controlled by the dispersion of both segments in the range between 10 nm and less than 1 nm. Moreover, the differentiated thermal properties of these copolymers were demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry analysis. On the other hand, the copolymerization of EPR macromonomer with MMA by conventional free radical polymerization with 2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) also gave PMMA‐g‐EPR graft copolymers. However, their morphology and thermal property remarkably differed from those of the graft copolymers obtained by ATRP. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers consisting of amorphous main chain, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), or poly(methyl acrylate) (PMAc), and crystalline side chains, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), have been prepared by copolymerization of PEG macromonomers with methyl methacrylate or methyl acrylate (MMAx or MACx, respectively). Because of the compatibility of PMMA/PEG and PMAc/PEG, from small‐angle X‐ray scattering results, the main and side chains in graft copolymers were suggested to be homogeneous in the molten state. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) cooling scans revealed that PEG side chains for graft copolymers with large PEG fractions were crystallized when the sample was cooled, with a cooling rate of 10 °C/min. The spherulite pattern observed by a polarized optical microscope suggested the growth of PEG crystalline lamellae. Crystallization of PEG in MMAx was more restrained than in MACx. From these results, we have concluded that the crystallization behavior of the grafted side chains is strongly influenced by the glass transition of a homogeneously molten sample as well as dilution of the crystallizable chains. Domain spacings for isothermally crystallized graft copolymers were described by interdigitating chain packing in crystalline–amorphous lamellar structure. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the dispersion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n-butyl acrylate (BA), the particle size increases with an increasing MMA fraction in the comonomer. The power dependence of the particle size on the initiator concentration also increases with an increasing MMA concentration. Similar to what can be found in the homopolymerizations, two populations can be observed in the molecular weight distributions of the copolymers. Core–shell structured particles with a poly(methyl methacrylate)-rich core and a poly(n-butyl acrylate)-rich shell result from the copolymerizations because of the significantly different reactivity ratios. The reaction rates of the dispersion copolymerization are lower than those of the homopolymerization of BA and close to or lower than those of the homopolymerization of MMA, depending on the ratio of the monomers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Here we report the preparation of PEG‐based thermoresponsive hyperbranched polymers via a facile in situ reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerization using bis(thiobenzoyl) disulphide to form 2‐cyanoprop‐2‐yl dithiobenzoate in situ. This novel one‐pot in situ RAFT approach was studied firstly using methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer, then was used to prepare thermoresponsive hyperbranched polymers by copolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA, Mn = 475), poly(propylene glycol) methacrylate (PPGMA, Mn = 375) and up to 30 % of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the branching agent. The resultant PEGMEMA‐PPGMA‐EGDMA copolymers from in situ RAFT were characterized by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) and 1H‐NMR analysis. The results confirmed the copolymers with multiple methacrylate groups and hyperbranched structure as well as RAFT functional residues. These water‐soluble copolymers with tailored compositions demonstrated tuneable lower critical solution temperature (LCST) from 22 °C to 32 °C. The phase transition temperature can be further altered by post functionalization via aminolysis of RAFT agent residues in polymer chains. Moreover, it was demonstrated by rheological studies and particle size measurements that these copolymers can form either micro‐ or macro photocrosslinked gels at suitable concentrations due to the presence of multiple methacrylate groups. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined, core‐shell poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/casein nanoparticles, ranging from 80 to 130 nm in diameter, were prepared via a direct graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) from casein. The polymerization was induced by a small amount of alkyl hydroperoxide (ROOH) in water at 80 °C. Free radicals on the amino groups of casein and alkoxy radicals were generated concurrently, which initiated the graft copolymerization and homopolymerization of MMA, respectively. The presence of casein micelles promoted the emulsion polymerization of the monomer and provided particle stability. The conversion and grafting efficiency of the monomer strongly depended on the type of radical initiator, ROOH concentration, casein to MMA ratio, and reaction temperature. The graft copolymers and homopolymer of PMMA were isolated and characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The molecular weight determination of both the grafted and homopolymer of PMMA suggested that the graft copolymerization and homopolymerization of MMA proceeded at a similar rate. The transmission electron microscopic image of the nanoparticles clearly showed a well‐defined core‐shell morphology, where PMMA cores were coated with casein shells. The casein shells were further confirmed with a zeta‐potential measurement. Finally, this synthetic method allowed us to prepare PMMA/casein nanoparticles with a solid content of up to 31%. Thus, our new process is commercially viable. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 41: 3346–3353, 2003  相似文献

Monodisperse polymeric nanospheres, which consist of polystyrene cores and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) branches on their surfaces, were prepared by the dispersion copolymerization of styrene (St) with PEG macromonomers that had a methacryloyl (MMA-PEG) or p-vinylbenzyl (St-PEG) end group in various organic solvent/water media. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) of the nanosphere surfaces indicated that PEG macromonomer chains were favorably located on their surfaces. The morphologies of the nanospheres were observed via a scanning electron micrograph (SEM), and particle sizes were estimated by a submicron particle analyzer. When both the concentration of macromonomers and molecular weight were higher, small nanospheres in diameter were obtained. Larger nanospheres in diameter were obtained using macromonomers with low molecular weight at lower concentration. The functions that correlate the diameter (Dn) on different concentration units were Dn = K[St]0.64[MMA-PEG]−0.53±0.01[I]−0.49 and Dn = K[St]0.80[St-PEG]−0.69±0.01[I]−0.22, where [I], [St], [MMA-PEG], and [St-PEG] are initiator, styrene, MMA-PEG, and St-PEG macromonomer concentration in feed, respectively. When the reaction parameters such as the molecular weight of the macromonomers were properly chosen, the particle size could be controlled in a range from ca. 80 to 3100 nm. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Novel reversible networks utilizing photodimerization of crosslinkable anthracene groups and thermal dissociation were investigated. Reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer polymerization yielded well‐defined copolymers with 9‐anthrylmethyl methacrylate (AMMA) and other alkyl methacrylates such as methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) having different AMMA compositions. Well‐controlled block copolymerization of AMMA and alkyl methacrylates was also successfully accomplished using a trithiocarbonate‐terminated poly(alkyl methacrylate) macro‐chain transfer agent. The anthracene‐containing copolymers showed reversibility via crosslinking based on photodimerization with ultraviolet irradiation and subsequent thermal dissociation. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reports the synthesis of the block and graft copolymers using peroxygen‐containing poly(methyl methacrylate) (poly‐MMA) as a macroinitiator that was prepared from the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of bis(4,4′‐bromomethyl benzoyl peroxide) (BBP). The effects of reaction temperatures on the ATRP system were studied in detail. Kinetic studies were carried out to investigate controlled ATRP for BBP/CuBr/bpy initiating system with MMA at 40 °C and free radical polymerization of styrene (S) at 80 °C. The plots of ln ([Mo]/[Mt]) versus reaction time are linear, corresponding to first‐order kinetics. Poly‐MMA initiators were used in the bulk polymerization of S to obtain poly (MMA‐b‐S) block copolymers. Poly‐MMA initiators containing undecomposed peroygen groups were used for the graft copolymerization of polybutadiene (PBd) and natural rubber (RSS‐3) to obtain crosslinked poly (MMA‐g‐PBd) and poly(MMA‐g‐RSS‐3) graft copolymers. Swelling ratio values (qv) of the graft copolymers in CHCl3 were calculated. The characterizations of the polymers were achieved by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H‐nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), gel‐permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and the fractional precipitation (γ) techniques. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Branched polystyrene macromonomers were synthesized by the slow addition of a stoichiometric amount of either 4‐(chlorodimethylsilyl)styrene or vinylbenzyl chloride as a coupling agent to living polystyryllithium. Star‐shaped macromonomers were produced by the addition of the coupling agent alone, and hyperbranched macromonomers resulted from the addition of the coupling agent along with styrene monomer. Star and hyperbranched graft copolymers were produced by the copolymerization of the macromonomers with styrene and methyl methacrylate. The copolymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography coupled with multi‐angle laser light scattering, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and Soxhlet extraction to determine that the macromonomers were incorporated in high yields into the copolymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The emulsion atom transfer radical block copolymerization of 2‐ethylhexyl methacrylate (EHMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) was carried out with the bifunctional initiator 1,4‐butylene glycol di(2‐bromoisobutyrate). The system was mediated by copper bromide/4,4′‐dinonyl‐2,2′‐bipyridyl and stabilized by polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate. The effects of the initiator concentration and temperature profile on the polymerization kinetics and latex stability were systematically examined. Both EHMA homopolymerization and successive copolymerization with MMA proceeded in a living manner and gave good control over the polymer molecular weights. The polymer molecular weights increased linearly with the monomer conversion with polydispersities lower than 1.2. A low‐temperature prepolymerization step was found to be helpful in stabilizing the latex systems, whereas further polymerization at an elevated temperature ensured high conversion rates. The EHMA polymers were effective as macroinitiators for initiating the block polymerization of MMA. Triblock poly(methyl methacrylate–2‐ethylhexyl methacrylate–methyl methacrylate) samples with various block lengths were synthesized. The MMA and EHMA reactivity ratios determined by a nonlinear least‐square method were ~0.903 and ~0.930, respectively, at 70 °C. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To establish the reaction condition under which the radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with α‐(2‐hydroxy‐4‐methacryloyloxyphenyl)‐N‐(2,6‐dimethylphenyl)nitrone (HMDN) proceeds smoothly to give photoreactive copolymers, the effects of the nitrone chromophore on the extent to which the radical polymerization of MMA is inhibited were investigated. It was found that the reversible addition of initiating radical to the CH?N+(? O?) moiety in the nitrone chromophore readily occurs to give the nitroxyl radical. It was also found that the latter radical undergoes an efficient coupling reaction with propagating radical to inhibit the radical copolymerization of MMA with HMDN. However, on raising the reaction temperature and the radical concentration, the copolymerization was successfully carried out. This polymerization condition allowed us to prepare the HMDN/MMA, HMDN/styrene, and HMDN/cyclohexyl acrylate copolymers in good yields. The photoirradiation of the copolymer film prepared on a silicon wafer lowered its refractive index by 0.003–0.023, depending on the relative composition of the diarylnitrone chromophore in these copolymers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In the reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) copolymerization of two monomers, even with the simple terminal model, there are two kinds of macroradical and two kinds of polymeric RAFT agent with different R groups. Because the structure of the R group could exert a significant influence on the RAFT process, RAFT copolymerization may behave differently from RAFT homopolymerization. The RAFT copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) in miniemulsion was investigated. The performance of the RAFT copolymerization of MMA/St in miniemulsion was found to be dependent on the feed monomer compositions. When St is dominant in the feed monomer composition, RAFT copolymerization is well controlled in the whole range of monomer conversion. However, when MMA is dominant, RAFT copolymerization may be, in some cases, out of control in the late stage of copolymerization, and characterized by a fast increase in the polydispersity index (PDI). The RAFT process was found to have little influence on composition evolution during copolymerization. The synthesis of the well‐defined gradient copolymers and poly[St‐b‐(St‐co‐MMA)] block copolymer by RAFT miniemulsion copolymerization was also demonstrated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The amphiphilic heterograft copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate)‐graft‐(poly(acrylic acid)/polystyrene) (P(MMA‐co‐BIEM)‐g‐(PAA/PS)) were synthesized successfully by the combination of single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP), single electron transfer‐nitroxide radical coupling (SET‐NRC), atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), and nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP) via the “grafting from” approach. First, the linear polymer backbones poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate) (P(MMA‐co‐BIEM)) were prepared by ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and subsequent esterification of the hydroxyl groups of the HEMA units with 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. Then the graft copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate)‐graft‐poly(t‐butyl acrylate) (P(MMA‐co‐BIEM)‐g‐PtBA) were prepared by SET‐LRP of t‐butyl acrylate (tBA) at room temperature in the presence of 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidin‐1‐yloxyl (TEMPO), where the capping efficiency of TEMPO was so high that nearly every TEMPO trapped one polymer radicals formed by SET. Finally, the formed alkoxyamines via SET‐NRC in the main chain were used to initiate NMP of styrene and following selectively cleavage of t‐butyl esters of the PtBA side chains afforded the amphiphilic heterograft copolymers poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate)‐graft‐(poly(t‐butyl acrylate)/polystyrene) (P(MMA‐co–BIEM)‐g‐(PtBA/PS)). The self‐assembly behaviors of the amphiphilic heterograft copolymers P(MMA‐co–BIEM)‐g‐(PAA/PS) in aqueous solution were investigated by AFM and DLS, and the results demonstrated that the morphologies of the formed micelles were dependent on the grafting density. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The partly fluorinated monomers, 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate (3FM), 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5‐octafluoropentyl methacrylate (8FM), and 1,1,2,2‐tetrahydroperfluorodecyl methacrylate (17FM) have been used in the preparation of block copolymers with methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2‐methoxyethyl acrylate (MEA), and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization. A kinetic study of the 3FM homopolymerization initiated with ethyl bromoisobutyrate and Cu(I)Br/N‐(n‐propyl)‐2‐pyridylmethanimine reveals a living/controlled polymerization in the range 80–110 °C, with apparent rate constants of 1.6 · 10−4 s−1 to 2.9 · 10−4 s−1. Various 3FM containing block copolymers with MMA are prepared by sequential monomer addition or from a PMMA macroinitiator in all cases with controlled characteristics. Block copolymers of 3FM and PEGMA resulted in block copolymers with PDI < 1.22, whereas block copolymers from 3FM and MEA have less controlled characteristics. The block copolymers based on MMA with 8FM and 17 FM have PDI's < 1.30. The glass transition temperatures of the block copolymers are dominated by the majority monomer, as the sequential monomer addition results in too short pure blocks to induce observable microphase separation. The thermal stability of the fluorinated poly((meth)acrylate)s in inert atmosphere is less than that of corresponding nonfluorinated poly((meth)acrylate)s. The presence of fluorinated blocks significantly increases the advancing water contact angle of thin films compared to films of the nonfluorinated poly((meth)acrylate)s. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymeric fluorosurfactants, using poly(N,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) or PDMA copolymers containing acrylic acid (AA) or 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) comonomers were synthesized by copolymerization of DMA, DMA/AA, or DMA/AMPS and methacrylates composed of 1,1‐dihydroperfluorodecanoyl groups separated from the methacrylate by polyethylene glycol (PEG) groups with molecular weights ranging from 1 to 6 kD. The stability of aqueous perfluorocarbon (PFC) emulsions mediated by these polymeric fluorosurfactants was found to be affected by polymer concentration, ionic comonomer content, perfluoroalkyl (RF) comonomer content, and PEG spacer length. Thus, emulsion stability characterized by average particle size and morphology was improved by increased AA or AMPS content (up to 30 weight percent), increased PEG chain length and RF comonomer content, and greater polymer concentration.  相似文献

This article deals with the synthesis of hydrophilic methacrylic monomers derived from ethyl pyrrolidone [2‐ethyl‐(2‐pyrrolidone) methacrylate (EPM)] and ethyl pyrrolidine [2‐ethyl‐(2‐pyrrolidine) methacrylate (EPyM)] and their respective homopolymers. For the determination of their reactivity in radical copolymerization reactions, both monomers were copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA), the reactivity ratios being calculated by the application of linear and nonlinear mathematical methods. EPM and MMA had ratios of rEPM = 1.11 and rMMA = 0.76, and this indicated that EPM with MMA had a higher reactivity in radical copolymerization processes than vinyl pyrrolidone (VP; rVP = 0.005 and rMMA = 4.7). EPyM and MMA had reactivity ratios of rEPyM = 1.31 and rMMA = 0.92, and this implied, as for the EPM–MMA copolymers, a tendency to form random or Bernoullian copolymers. The glass‐transition temperatures of the prepared copolymers were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and were found to adjust to the Fox equation. Total‐conversion copolymers were prepared, and their behavior in aqueous media was found to be dependent on the copolymer composition. The swelling kinetics of the copolymers followed water transport mechanism case II, which is the most desirable kinetic behavior for a swelling controlled‐release material. Finally, the different states of water in the hydrogels—nonfreezing water, freezing bound water, and unbound freezing water—were determined by DSC and found to be dependent on the hydrophilic and hydrophobic units of the copolymers. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new facile method for preparation of an amphiphilic block copolymer via a one‐pot sequential atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) on solid support was developed. As a model homopolymerization for the solid‐supported block copolymerization, ATRPs of MMA and HEMA in toluene and in 2‐butanone/1‐propanol solvent system were carried out, respectively. Crosslinked polystyrene beads bearing 2‐bromoisobutyrate moieties successfully initiated the polymerizations of MMA and HEMA in controlled manner. On the basis of the successful results, the one‐pot synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymer by changing the reaction medium was performed. After the ATRP of MMA in toluene at 90 °C for 1 h, the poly(MMA) formed on the beads were washed by continuous flow of 2‐butanone/1‐propanol under nitrogen with the aid of a glass filter in a U‐shaped glass vessel. Then, 2‐butanone/1‐propanol, copper chloride (I), 2,2′‐bipyridyl, and HEMA were added and heated at 50 °C for 48 h with shaking the vessel, followed by treatment with trifluoroacetic acid to isolate the well‐defined amphiphilic block copolymer, poly(MMA‐b‐HEMA). These demonstrated the feasibility of the present strategy for well‐defined synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers via a one‐pot procedure. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. (AB)f star block copolymers were synthesized by the radical polymerization of a poly(t‐butyl acrylate)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) diblock macroinitiator with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in methanol under UV irradiation. Diblock macroinitiators were prepared by diethyldithiocarbamate‐mediated sequential living radical copolymerization initiated by (4‐cyano‐4‐diethyldithiocarbamyl)pentanoic acid under UV irradiation. The arm number (f) was controlled by the variation of the initial concentration of the diblock initiator. It was found from light scattering data that such star block copolymers (f ≥ 344) not only took a spherical shape but also formed a single molecule in solution. Subsequently, we derived amphiphilic [arm: poly(acrylic acid)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate)] star block copolymers by the hydrolysis of poly(t‐butyl acrylate) blocks. These amphiphilic star block copolymers were soluble in water because the external blocks were composed of hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) chains. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
