Three series of new thermoplastic, high molecular weight, segmented thiopolyurethanes were synthesized by a one-step melt polymerization from newly obtained thiodiols, including bis[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)thiomethylphenyl]methane, bis[4-(3-hydroxypropyl)thiomethylphenyl]methane, and bis[4-(6-hydroxyhexyl)thiomethylphenyl]methane (BHHM), as chain extenders; hexamethylene diisocyanate; and 20–80 mol % poly(oxytetramethylene) glycol (PTMG; number-average molecular weight = 1000) as the soft segment. Solution polymerization with the chain extender BHHM gave considerably lower molecular weight polymers. The structures of all the polyurethanes were determined with Fourier transform infrared and X-ray diffraction analysis. The thermal properties of the polyurethanes were examined with differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Shore A/D hardness and tensile properties were also determined. All the polyurethanes showed partially crystalline structures; those obtained with 40–80 mol % PTMG were elastomers. An increase in the PTMG content decreased hardness, modulus of elasticity, and tensile strength, whereas elongation at break increased. BHHM-based polyurethanes obtained in the melt showed the best tensile properties. The polyurethanes exhibited definite glass transitions (−70 to −59 °C) that were nearly independent of the hard-segment content up to about 50 wt % (40–80 mol % PTMG), indicating the existence of mainly microphase-separated soft and hard segments. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. To investigate the position and amount of the CF3 group affecting the coloration of polyimides (PIs), we prepared 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane ( 2 ) with four CF3 groups with 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride and 2,2‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenol)hexafluoropropane. A series of soluble and light‐colored fluorinated PIs ( 5 ) were synthesized from 2 and various aromatic dianhydrides ( 3a – 3f ). 5a – 5f had inherent viscosities ranging from 0.80 to 1.19 dL/g and were soluble in amide polar solvents and even in less polar solvents. The glass‐transition temperatures of 5 were 221–265 °C, and the 10% weight‐loss temperatures were above 493 °C. Their films had cutoff wavelengths between 343 and 390 nm, b* values (a yellowness index) ranging from 5 to 41, dielectric constants of 2.68–3.01 (1 MHz), and moisture absorptions of 0.03–0.29 wt %. In a comparison of the PI series 6 – 8 based on 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]hexafluoropropane, 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl]propane, and 2,2‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane, we found that the CF3 group close to the imide group was more effective in lowering the color; this means that CF3 of 5 , 7 , and 8f was more effective than that of 6c . The color intensity of the four PI series was lowered in the following order: 5 > 7 > 6 > 8 . The PI 5f , synthesized from diamine 2 and 4,4′‐hexafluoroisopropylidenediphthalic anhydride, had six CF3 groups in a repeated segment, so it exhibited the lightest color among the four series. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis, characterization, and structure–property behavior of polyurethanes containing polyisobutylene (PIB)/poly(tetramethylene oxide) (PTMO) soft co‐segments and bis(4‐isocyanatocyclohexyl)methane (HMDI)/hexanediol (HDO) hard segments is presented. The mechanical (stress/strain, hardness, and hysteresis) properties of these novel polyurethanes were investigated over a broad composition range. PIB‐based polyurethanes with HMDI/HDO hard segments showed better mechanical properties than earlier polyurethanes containing highly crystalline hard segments. The addition of moderate amounts (20% by weight) of PTMO significantly increased both tensile strengths and elongation. In the presence of larger amounts of PIB, these polyurethanes are expected to possess oxidative/hydrolytic/enzymatic stabilities superior to commercially available polyurethanes. These polyurethanes are softer and exhibit hysteresis superior to or comparable with conventional polyurethanes. According to initial thermal studies, these materials show good melt processibility. Overall, the mechanical properties of PIB based hybrid polyurethanes are similar to commercially important polyurethane type biomaterials. Our results show that the incorporation of PTMO segments to PIB‐based polyurethanes significantly improves elastomeric properties. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New thermoplastic nonsegmented thiopolyurethanes were obtained from the low-melting aliphatic–aromatic thiodiols 4,4′-bis(2-hydroxyethylthiomethyl)benzophenone (BHEB), 4,4′-bis(3-hydroxypropylthiomethyl)benzophenone (BHPB), and 4,4′-bis(6-hydroxyhexylthiomethyl)benzenophenone(BHHB) as well as hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), both by melt and solution polymerization with dibutyltin dilaurate as the catalyst. The effect of various solvents on molecular-weight values was examined. The polymers with the highest reduced viscosities (0.63–0.88 dL/g) were obtained when the polymerization was carried out in a solution of tetrachloroethane, N,N-dimethylacetamide, and N,N-dimethylacetamide or N,N-dimethylformamide for BHEB-, BHPB-, and BHHB-derived polyurethanes, respectively. These polymers with a partially crystalline structure showed glass-transition temperatures (Tg) in the range of −1 to 39 °C, melting temperatures (Tm) in the range of 107 to 124 °C, and thermal stabilities up to 230 to 240 °C. The BHEB-derived polyurethane is a low-elasticity material with high tensile strength (ca. 50 MPa), whereas the BHPB- and BHHB-derived polyurethanes are more elastic, showing yield stress at approximately 16 MPa. We also obtained segmented polyurethanes by using BHHB, HDI, and 20 to 80 mol % poly(oxytetramethylene) glycol (PTMG) of n = 1000 as the soft segment. These are high-molecular thermoplastic elastomers that show a partially crystalline structure. Thermal properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The increase in PTMG content decreases the definite Tg and increases the solubility of the polymers. These segmented polyurethanes exhibit the definite Tg (−67 to −62 °C) nearly independent of the hard-segment content up to approximately 50 wt %, indicating the existence of mainly phase-separated soft and hard segments. Shore A/D hardness and tensile properties were also determined. As the PTMG content increases, the hardness, modulus of elasticity, and tensile strength decrease, whereas elongation at break increases. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Three new bis(ether‐acyl chloride) monomers, 1,1‐bis[4‐(4‐chloroformylphenoxy)phenyl]cyclohexane ( 1a ), 5,5‐bis[4‐(4‐chloroformylphenoxy)phenyl]‐4,7‐methanohexahydroindan ( 1b ), and 9,9‐bis[4‐(4‐chloroformylphenoxy)phenyl]fluorene ( 1c ), were synthesized from readily available compounds. Aromatic polybenzoxazoles bearing ether and cardo groups were obtained by the low‐temperature solution polycondensation of the bis(ether‐acyl chloride)s with three bis(aminophenol)s and the subsequent thermal cyclodehydration of the resultant poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s. The intermediate poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s exhibited inherent viscosities in the range of 0.35–0.71 dL/g. All of the poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s were amorphous and soluble in many organic polar solvents, and most of them could afford flexible and tough films by solvent casting. The poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s exhibited glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) in the range of 141–169 °C and could be thermally converted into the corresponding polybenzoxazoles approximately in the region of 240–350 °C, as indicated by the DSC thermograms. Flexible and tough films of polybenzoxazoles could be obtained by thermal cyclodehydration of the poly(o‐hydroxy amide) films. All the polybenzoxazoles were amorphous and showed an enhanced Tg but a dramatically decreased solubility as compared with their poly(o‐hydroxy amide) precursors. They exhibited Tg's of 215–272 °C by DSC and showed insignificant weight loss before 500 °C in nitrogen or air. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A set of linear [m,n]‐type polyurethanes was synthesized by polycondensation in solution from hexamethylene diisocyanate and 4,4′‐methylene‐bis(phenyl isocyanate) with alditols. Threitol, arabinitol, and xylitol bearing the secondary hydroxy groups blocked as methyl ethers were used. Either regioregular or nonregioregular polymers (depending on the configuration of the alditol) were obtained in high yields and with number‐average molecular weights within the 20,000–30,000 range. All these polyurethanes were amorphous with Tg being highly dependent on the aliphatic or aromatic nature of the diisocyanate used, but scarcely depending on the chemical structure of the alditol moiety. They were found to be stable up to near 300 °C, decomposing at higher temperatures through a complex three‐stage mechanism. Polyurethanes obtained from threitol did not show significant enhancement of hydrolytic degradability as compared with polyurethanes obtained from 1,4‐butanediol. Conversely, polyurethane prepared from xylitol and hexamethylendiisocyanate was found to be almost fully hydrolyzed in 1 month when incubated in water either at 80 °C and pH 7.4 or at 37 °C and pH 10. It was concluded that the alditol size seems to be of prime importance in determining the hydrodegradability of these sugar containing polyurethanes. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel photoluminescent polymer (PPyne) containing a 2‐pyrazoline unit in the molecular main chain was prepared (for the first time) by polycondensation between a 2‐pyrazoline monomer [an adduct of 2,6‐bis(4‐bromobenzylidene)cyclohexanone with phenylhydrazine] and 2,5‐dihexyloxy‐p‐phenylene diboric ester in the presence of Pd(PPh3)4. PPyne had a number‐average molecular weight of 7800 and a polydispersity index of 1.99 and showed good solubility in common organic solvents. In toluene PPyne exhibited an intrinsic viscosity [η] of 0.42 dL g?1 at 30 °C. The polymer was photoluminescent (PL) in both the chloroform solution and the solid state; the quantum yield of PL in the solution was 40%. In the two states, PPyne gave the same ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) peak at 368 nm and the same PL peak at 512 nm. DSC traces indicated that PPyne had a melting temperature of 168 °C, and thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the polymer had good thermal stability with a 5 wt % loss temperature of 376 °C under N2. Electrochemical oxidation of PPyne started at about 0.5 V versus Ag/AgNO3 and gave a peak at 0.98 V versus Ag/AgNO3 with a color change of the film from yellow to black green. The color change was followed by UV–vis spectroscopy. The corresponding reduction peak appeared at 0.80 V versus Ag/AgNO3. Treatment of PPyne with HCl led to dehydrogenating transformation of the polymer to a new cross‐conjugated polymer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe the discovery of novel low cost bifunctional initiators 2,4,7,9‐tetramethyl‐tricyclo[6.2.0.036]deca‐1(8),2,6‐triene‐4,9‐diol (bBCB‐diOH) and 4,9‐dichloro,2,4,7,9‐tetramethyl‐tricyclo[6.2.0.036]deca‐1(8),2,6‐triene (bBCB‐diCl), for living cationic bidirectional polymerization of olefins, for example, isobutylene. bBCB‐diOH was quantitatively synthesized in one step by UV radiation of commercially available diacetyl durene (DAD) and bBCB‐diCl by hydrochlorination of bBCB‐diOH. These molecules, in conjunction with TiCl4 coinitiator, initiate the living polymerization of isobutylene. Livingness was demonstrated by linear conversion versus molecular weight (MW) plots and narrow MW distributions. Polymerizations are slower than those initiated by the universally used “hindered” bifunctional initiator 5‐tert‐butyl‐1,3‐bis(1‐chloro‐1‐methyl)benzene and are suitable for rate studies. Herein, we report the synthesis, by the use of bBCB‐diCl, of relatively low MW (M n < 3000 g mol?1) allyl‐telechelic polyisobutylene (PIB) used for the synthesis of PIB‐based polyurethanes and that of relatively high MW (M n > 30,000) living PIB telechelics for the synthesis of thermoplastic elastomers. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Main‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyurethanes were synthesized based on a high aspect ratio mesogenic diol (4‐{[4‐(6‐hydroxyhexyloxy)‐phenylimino]‐methyl}‐benzoic acid 4‐{[4‐(6‐hydroxyhexyloxy)‐phenylimino]‐methyl}‐phenyl ester) as a chain extender; polycaprolactone (PCL) diol soft segments of different number‐average molecular weights (530, 1250, or 2000); and different diisocyanates, including 1,4‐hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), 4,4′‐methylene bis(cyclohexyl isocyanate) (H12MDI), and 4,4′‐methylene bis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI). The structure of the polymers was confirmed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing microscopy measurements were carried out to examine the liquid‐crystalline and thermal properties of the polyurethanes, respectively. The mesogenic diol was partially replaced with 20–50 mol % PCL. A 20 mol % mesogen content was sufficient to impart a liquid crystalline property to all the polymers. The partial replacement of the mesogenic diol with PCL of various molecular weights, as well as the various diisocyanates, influenced the phase transitions and the occurrence of mesophase textures. Characteristic liquid‐crystalline textures were observed when a sufficient content of the mesogenic diol was present. Depending on the flexible spacer length and the mesogenic content, grained and threadlike textures were obtained for the HMDI and H12MDI series polymers, whereas the polyurethanes prepared from MDI showed only grained textures for all the compositions. The polymers formed brittle films and could not be subjected to tensile tests. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 1527–1538, 2002  相似文献

Eight 2,2′‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride‐4,4′‐diamino‐3,3′‐dimethylbiphenyl (6FDA‐OTOL) fractions and seven 2,2′‐bis[4‐(3,4‐dicarboxyphenoxy) phenyl] propane dianhydride‐4,4′‐diamino‐3,3′‐dimethylbiphenyl (BISADA‐OTOL) fractions in cyclopentanone at 30 °C were characterized by a combination of viscometry and static and dynamic laser light scattering (LLS). In static LLS, the angular dependence of the absolute scattered intensity led to the weight‐average molar mass (Mw), the z‐average root mean square radius of gyration, and the second virial coefficient. In dynamic LLS, the Laplace inversion of each measured intensity–intensity time correlation function resulted in a corresponding translational diffusion coefficient distribution [G(D)]. The scalings of 〈D〉 (cm2/s) = 8.13 × 10−5 Mw−0.47 and [η] (dL/g) = 2.36 × 10−3 Mw0.54 for 6FDA‐OTOL and 〈D〉 (cm2/s) = 3.02 × 10−4 Mw−0.60 and [η] (dL/g) = 2.32 × 10−3 Mw0.53 for BISADA‐OTOL were established. With these scalings, we successfully converted each G(D) value into a corresponding molar mass distribution. At 30 °C, cyclopentanone is a good solvent for BISADA‐OTOL but a poor solvent for 6FDA‐OTOL; this can be attributed to an ether linkage in BISADA‐OTOL. Therefore, BISADA‐OTOL has a more extended chain conformation than 6FDA‐OTOL in cyclopentanone. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 2077–2080, 2000  相似文献

A bis(ether anhydride) monomer, 1,1‐bis[4‐(3,4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]cyclohexane dianhydride ( IV‐A ), was synthesized from the nitro displacement of 4‐nitrophthalodinitrile by the phenoxide ion of 1,1‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexane ( I‐A ), followed by alkaline hydrolysis of the intermediate bis(ether dinitrile) and dehydration of the resulting bis(ether acid). A novel series of organosoluble poly(ether imide)s ( VI a–i )(PEIs) bearing cyclohexylidene cardo groups was prepared from the bis(ether anhydride) IV‐A with various aromatic diamines V a–i via a conventional two‐stage process. The PEIs had inherent viscosities in the range of 0.48–1.02 dL/g and afforded flexible and tough films by solution‐casting because of their good solubilities in organic solvents. Most PEIs showed yield points in the range of 89–102 MPa at stress‐strain curves and had tensile strengths of 78–103 MPa, elongations at breaks of 8–62%, and initial moduli of 1.8–2.2 GPa. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of these PEIs were recorded between 200–234 °C. Decomposition temperatures of 10% weight loss all occurred above 490 °C in both air and nitrogen atmospheres, and their residues were more than 43% at 800 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. The cyclohexane cardo‐based PEIs exhibited relatively higher Tg's, better solubilities in organic solvents, and better tensile properties as compared with the corresponding Ultem® PEI system. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Starting from 3,5‐diamino benzoic acid, 2‐hydroxy propyl[3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}]benzyl ether, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer with flexible ether group, and 2‐hydroxy propyl[3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}]benzoate, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer with ester group, were synthesized for the first time. Using the same starting compound, 3,5‐bis{(benzoxycarbonyl)imino}benzylalcohol, an AB2‐type blocked isocyanate monomer, was synthesized through a highly efficient short‐cut route. Step‐growth polymerization of these monomers at individually optimized experimental conditions results in the formation of hyperbranched polyurethanes with and without ether and ester groups. Copolymerizations of these monomers with functionally similar AB monomers were also carried out. The molecular weights of the polymers were determined using GPC and the values (Mw) were found to vary from 1.5 × 104 to 1.2 × 106. While hyperbranched polyurethanes having no ether or ester group were found to be thermally stable up to 217 °C, hyperbranched poly(ether–urethane)s and poly(ester–urethane)s were found to be thermally stable up to 245 and 300 °C, respectively. Glass transition temperature (Tg) of polyurethane was reduced significantly when introducing ether groups into the polymer chain, whereas Tg was not observed even up to 250 °C in the case of poly(ester–urethane). Hyperbranched polyurethanes derived from all the three different AB2 monomers were soluble in highly polar solvents and the copolymers showed improved solubility. Polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether of molecular weight 550 and decanol were used as end‐capping groups, which were seen to affect the thermal, solution, and solubility properties of polymers. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Metallocene dihalides and derivatives thereof are of great interest as precursors for catalysts in polymerization reactions, as antitumor agents and, due to their increased stability, as suitable starting materials in salt metathesis reactions and the generation of metallocene fragments. We report the synthesis and structural characterization of a series of eleven substituted bis(η5‐cyclopentadienyl)titanium dihalides, namely bis[η5‐1‐(diphenylmethyl)cyclopentadienyl]difluoridotitanium(IV), [Ti(C18H15)2F2], bis{η5‐1‐[bis(4‐methylphenyl)methyl]cyclopentadienyl}difluoridotitanium(IV), [Ti(C20H19)2F2], and bis{η5‐1‐[bis(adamantan‐2‐yl)methyl]cyclopentadienyl}difluoridotitanium(IV), [Ti(C15H19)2F2], together with the bromide and iodide analogues, and the chloride analogues of the diphenylmethyl and adamantyl complexes. These eleven complexes were prepared by the reaction of the corresponding bis(η51‐pentafulvene)titanium complexes with different hydrogen halides (Cl, Br and I). The titanocene fluorides become available via chloride–fluoride exchange reactions.  相似文献

Two new bis(ether acyl chloride)s, 1,1‐bis[4‐(4‐chloroformylphenoxy)phenyl]‐1‐phenylethane and 1,1‐bis[4‐(4‐chloroformylphenoxy)phenyl]‐1‐phenyl‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethane, were prepared from readily available reagents. Aromatic polybenzoxazoles with both ether and phenylethylidene or 1‐phenyl‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethylidene linkages between phenylene units were obtained by a conventional two‐step procedure including the low‐temperature solution polycondensation of the bis(ether acyl chloride)s with three bis(o‐aminophenol)s, yielding poly(o‐hydroxyamide) precursors, and subsequent thermal cyclodehydration. The intermediate poly(o‐hydroxyamide)s exhibited inherent viscosities of 0.39–0.98 dL/g. All of the poly(o‐hydroxyamide)s were amorphous and soluble in polar organic solvents such as N,N‐dimethylacetamide, and most of them could afford flexible and tough films via solvent casting. The poly(o‐hydroxyamide)s exhibited glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of 129–194 °C and could be thermally converted into corresponding polybenzoxazoles in the solid state at temperatures higher than 300 °C. All the polybenzoxazoles were amorphous and showed an enhanced Tg but a dramatically decreased solubility with to respect to their poly(o‐hydroxyamide) precursors. They exhibited Tg's of 216–236 °C through differential scanning calorimetry and were stable up to 500 °C in nitrogen or air, with 10% weight‐loss temperatures being recorded between 538 and 562 °C in nitrogen or air. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel structurally asymmetric bis(ether amine) monomer containing trifluoromethyl groups, 1,7‐bis(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)naphthalene, was prepared through the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 2‐chloro‐5‐nitrobenzotrifluoride and 1,7‐dihydroxynaphthalene in the presence of potassium carbonate in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP), followed by catalytic reduction with hydrazine and Pd/C in ethanol. A series of new fluorine‐containing polyimides were synthesized from the diamine with various commercially available aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydrides using a two‐stage process with thermal or chemical imidization method. The intermediate poly(amic acid)s had inherent viscosities between 0.93 and 1.93 dL/g. Most of the polyimides obtained from both routes were readily soluble in many organic solvents such as NMP and N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc). All the polyimides could afford transparent, flexible, and strong films with low moisture absorptions of 0.29–0.69%, low dielectric constants of 2.81–3.23 at 10 kHz, and an ultraviolet‐visible absorption cutoff wavelength at 358–423 nm. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tgs) (by DSC) and softening temperatures (by thermomechanical analysis) of the polyimides were recorded in the range of 222–271 °C and 210–266 °C, respectively. Decomposition temperatures for 10% weight loss all occurred above 500 °C in both nitrogen and air atmospheres. For a comparative study, some properties of the present polyimides will be compared with those of structurally related ones derived from 1,7‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)naphthalene and 1,5‐bis(4‐amino‐2‐trifluoromethylphenoxy)naphthalene. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four bis(ether anhydride)s, 4,4′‐(1,4‐phenylenedioxy)diphthalic anhydride (IV), 4,4′‐(2,5‐tolylenedioxy)‐diphthalic anhydride (Me‐IV), 4,4′‐(2‐chloro‐1,4‐phenylenedioxy)diphthalic anhydride (Cl‐IV), and 4,4′‐(2,5‐biphenylenedioxy)diphthalic anhydride (Ph‐IV), were prepared in three steps starting from the nucleophilic nitrodisplacement reaction of 4‐nitrophthalonitrile with the potassium phenoxides of hydroquinone and various substituted hydroquinones such as methylhydroquinone, chlorohydroquinone, and phenylhydroquinone in N,N‐dimethylformamide, followed by alkaline hydrolysis and dehydration. Four series of poly(ether imide)s were prepared from bis(ether anhydride)s with various aromatic diamines by a classical two‐step procedure. The inherent viscosities of the intermediate poly(amic acid)s were in the range of 0.40–2.63 dL/g. Except for those derived from p‐phenylenediamine and benzidine, almost all the poly(amic acid)s could be solution‐cast and thermally converted into transparent, flexible, and tough polyimide films. Introduction of the chloro or phenyl substituent leads to a decreased crystallinity and an increased solubility of the polymers. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of these polyimides were recorded in the range of 204–263°C. In general, the methyl‐ and chloro‐substituted polyimides exhibited relatively higher Tgs, whereas the phenyl‐substituted ones exhibited slightly lower Tgs compared to the corresponding nonsubstituted ones. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) showed that 10% weight loss temperatures of all the polymers were above 500°C either in nitrogen or in air. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A novel photoactive, liquid‐crystalline, hyperbranched benzylidene polyester (PAHBP) was synthesized from a dilute solution of an A2 photoactive monomer [bis(4‐hydroxybenzylidene)‐4‐phenyl cyclohexanone] and a B3 monomer (1,3,5‐benzene tricarboxylic acid chloride) by the solution polycondensation method in the presence of pyridine as a condensing agent. PAHBP was thoroughly characterized by Fourier transform infrared, 1H and 13C NMR, ultraviolet–visible spectrometry, and gel permeation chromatography. The inherent viscosity of the polymer was 0.35 dL/g in tetrahydrofuran. The degree of branching was 0.53, which confirmed the branched architecture of the polymer. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized optical microscopy were used to examine the thermal stability and thermotropic liquid‐crystalline properties of the hyperbranched polyester. The polymer exhibited a nematic mesophase over a wide range of temperatures. The photoreactivity of PAHBP was studied by photolysis under ultraviolet light. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New linear polyesters containing sulfur in the main chain were obtained by melt polycondensation of diphenylmethane‐4,4′‐bis(methylthioacetic acid) (DBMTAA) or diphenylmethane‐4,4′‐bis(methythiopropionic acid) (DBMTPA) and diphenylmethane‐4,4′‐bis(methylthioethanol) (DBMTE) at equimolar ratio of reagents (polyesters E‐A and E‐P) as well as at 0.15 molar excess of diol (polyesters E‐AOH and E‐POH). The kinetics of these reactions was studied at 150, 160, and 170°C. Reaction rate constants (k2) and activation parameters (ΔG, ΔH, ΔS) from carboxyl group loss were determined using classical kinetic methods. E‐A and E‐P (n = 4400, 4600) were used for synthesis of new rubber‐like polyester‐sulfur compositions, by heating with elemental sulfur, whereas oligoesterols E‐AOH and E‐POH (M̄n = 2500, 2900) were converted to thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers by reaction with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) or methylene bis(4‐phenyl isocyanate) (MDI). The structure of the polymers was determined by elemental analysis, FT‐IR and liquid or solid‐state 1H‐, 13C‐NMR spectroscopy, and X‐ray diffraction analysis. Thermal properties were measured by DTA, TGA, and DSC. Hardness and tensile properties of polyurethanes and polyester‐sulfur compositions were also determined. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Two series of novel fluorinated aromatic polyamides were prepared from 1,1‐bis[4‐(4‐carboxyphenoxy)phenyl]‐1‐phenyl‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethane with various aromatic diamines or from 1,1‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]‐1‐phenyl‐2,2,2‐trifluoroethane with various aromatic dicarboxylic acids with the phosphorylation polyamidation technique. These polyamides had inherent viscosities ranging from 0.51 to 1.54 dL/g that corresponded to weight‐average and number‐average molecular weights (by gel permeation chromatography) of 36,200–80,000 and 17,200–64,300, respectively. All polymers were highly soluble in aprotic polar solvents, such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone and N,N‐dimethylacetamide, and some could even be dissolved in less‐polar solvents like tetrahydrofuran. The flexible and tough films cast from the polymer solutions possessed tensile strengths of 76–94 MPa and initial moduli of 1.70–2.22 GPa. Glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) and softening temperatures of these polyamides were observed in the range of 185–268 °C by differential scanning calorimetry or thermomechanical analysis. Decomposition temperatures (Td's) for 10% weight loss all occurred above 500 °C in both nitrogen and air atmospheres. Almost all the fluorinated polyamides displayed relatively higher Tg and Td values than the corresponding nonfluorinated analogues. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 2,2‐Bis[4(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]phthalein‐3′,5′‐bis(trifluoromethyl)anilide (6FADAP), containing fluorine and phthalimide moieties, was synthesized via the Williamson ether condensation reaction from 1‐chloro‐4‐nitrobenzene and phenolphthalein‐3′,5′‐bis(trifluoromethyl)anilide, which was followed by hydrogenation. Monomers such as 2,2‐bis[4(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]phthalein‐anilide containing phthalimide groups and 2,2‐bis[4(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]phthalein containing only phthalein moieties were also synthesized for comparison. The monomers were first characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 1H NMR, 19F NMR, elemental analysis, and titration and were then used to prepare polyimides with 2,2‐bis(3,4‐dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride. The polyimides were designed to have molecular weights of 20,000 g/mol via off‐stoichiometry and were characterized by FTIR, NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. Their solubility, water absorption, dielectric constant, and refractive index were also evaluated. The polyimides prepared with 6FADAP, containing fluorine and phthalimide moieties, had excellent solubility in N‐methylpyrrolidinone, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, tetrahydrofuran, CHCl3, tetrachloroethane, and acetone, and GPC analysis showed a molecular weight of 18,700 g/mol. The polyimides also exhibited a high glass‐transition temperature (290 °C), good thermal stability (~500 °C in air), low water absorption (1.9 wt %), a low dielectric constant (2.81), a low refractive index, and low birefringence (0.0041). © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
