Experiments were conducted using tufts and PIV to determine the conditions for which a swirled gas jet issuing from a sharp-edge nozzle, in flush with a base plate, would form a Coanda jet. The flow field was also simulated. The inception of the Coanda jet was observed to be associated with the formation of a recirculation bubble at the nozzle exit. A threshold value of swirl number, which increased monotonically with Reynolds number, was required for the formation of the Coanda jet. The Coanda jet was associated with hysteresis. The flow features and transition from a diverging jet to a Coanda jet are discussed.  相似文献

In a number of cases of supersonic flow past bodies with recesses pulsations in the flow arise [1–3]. Experiments [4, 5] indicate that stabilization of the steady supersonic flow past the body with a recess on which a shock wave is incident takes place after a series of oscillations of the bow wave. Numerical calculation of the interaction of a supersonic jet with a cylindrical cavity [6] reveals that damped pressure pulsations arise inside the cavity if the jet is homogeneous, and undamped pulsations it is inhomogeneous. The authors explain the damping of the pulsations by the influence of artificial viscosity. This paper investigates experimentally and theoretically (by numerical methods) the oscillations of the bow shock wave and the parameters of the flow behind it in the case of unsteady reflection of a shock wave from a body with a cylindrical recess turned towards the flow. The problem is posed as follows. A plane shock wave with constant parameters impinges on a cylinder with a cavity. The unsteady flow originating from this interaction is investigated.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 199–202, September–October, 1984.  相似文献

The objective of this effort is to develop a computational methodology to capture the side load physics and to anchor the computed aerodynamic side loads with the available data by simulating the startup transient of a regeneratively cooled, high-aspect-ratio nozzle, hot-fired at sea level. The computational methodology is based on an unstructured-grid, pressure-based, reacting flow computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer formulation, and a transient inlet history based on an engine system simulation. Emphases were put on the effects of regenerative cooling on shock formation inside the nozzle, and ramp rate on side load reduction. The results show that three types of asymmetric shock physics incur strong side loads: the generation of combustion wave, shock transitions, and shock pulsations across the nozzle lip, albeit the combustion wave can be avoided with sparklers during hot-firing. Results from both regenerative cooled and adiabatic wall boundary conditions capture the early shock transitions with corresponding side loads matching the measured secondary side load. It is theorized that the first transition from free-shock separation to restricted-shock separation is caused by the Coanda effect. After which the regeneratively cooled wall enhances the Coanda effect such that the supersonic jet stays attached, while the hot adiabatic wall fights off the Coanda effect, and the supersonic jet becomes detached most of the time. As a result, the computed peak side load and dominant frequency due to shock pulsation across the nozzle lip associated with the regeneratively cooled wall boundary condition match those of the test, while those associated with the adiabatic wall boundary condition are much too low. Moreover, shorter ramp time results show that higher ramp rate has the potential in reducing the nozzle side loads.

A numerical study over a nominally two-dimensional circulation control airfoil is performed using a large-eddy simulation code and two Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes codes. Different Coanda jet blowing conditions are investigated. In addition to investigating the influence of grid density, a comparison is made between incompressible and compressible flow solvers. The incompressible equations are found to yield negligible differences from the compressible equations up to at least a jet exit Mach number of 0.64. The effects of different turbulence models are also studied. Models that do not account for streamline curvature effects tend to predict jet separation from the Coanda surface too late, and can produce non-physical solutions at high blowing rates. Three different turbulence models that account for streamline curvature are compared with each other and with large eddy simulation solutions. All three models are found to predict the Coanda jet separation location reasonably well, but one of the models predicts specific flow field details near the Coanda surface prior to separation much better than the other two. All Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes computations produce higher circulation than large eddy simulation computations, with different stagnation point location and greater flow acceleration around the nose onto the upper surface. The precise reasons for the higher circulation are not clear, although it is not solely a function of predicting the jet separation location correctly.  相似文献

The deviation of a jet from the straight direction due to the presence of a lateral wall is investigated from the experimental point of view. This flow condition is known as Coanda jet (from the Romanian aerodynamicist Henry Marie Coanda who discovered and applied it at the beginning of XXth century) or offset jet. The objective of the work is to detail the underlying mechanisms of such a phenomenon aiming to use it as a flow control method at polluted river flows mouth. To do this, a large laboratory free-surface tank with an incoming channel has been set up and velocity field measurements are performed by Optical Flow methods (namely Feature Tracking). Preliminary tests on the well-known free jet configuration without any marine structure (i.e. lateral wall) are performed to allow comparison with free jet scaling and self-similar solutions. The presence of the free-surface gives rise to centerline velocity decay which is lower than in free unbounded plane or circular jets due to the vertically limited ambient fluid entrainment. In the second part of the paper, the effect of a lateral wall on the jet configuration is examined by placing it at different lateral distances from the jet outlet. The resulting velocity fields clearly show an inclined Coanda jet with details which seems to depend on the lateral wall distance itself. The analysis of self-similarity along the inclined jet direction reveals that for wall distances larger than 5 jet widths this dependence almost disappears.  相似文献

This paper investigates the flow pattern change in an annular jet caused by a sudden change in the level of inlet swirl. The jet geometry consists of an annular channel followed by a specially designed stepped‐conical nozzle, which allows the existence of four different flow patterns as a function of the inlet swirl number. This paper reports on the transition between two of them, called the ‘open jet flow high swirl’ and the ‘Coanda jet flow.’ It is shown that a small sudden decrease of 4% in inlet swirl results in a drastic and irreversible change in flow pattern. The objective of this paper is to reveal the underlying physical mechanisms in this transition by means of numerical simulations. The flow is simulated using the unsteady Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) approach for incompressible flow with a Reynolds stress turbulence model. The analysis of the numerical results is based on a study of different forces on a control volume, which consists of the jet boundaries. The analysis of these forces shows that the flow pattern change consists of three different regimes: an immediate response regime, a quasi‐static regime and a Coanda regime. The simulation reveals that the pressure–tangential velocity coupling during the quasi‐static regime and the Coanda effect at the nozzle outlet during the Coanda regime are the driving forces behind the flow pattern change. These physical mechanisms are validated with time‐resolved stereo‐PIV measurements, which confirm the numerical simulations. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The possibility of using microribbing of curved surfaces in order to reduce turbulent friction in Coanda flows is investigated. It is shown that by means of ribbing it is possible to reduce the effect of a jet impinging on an obstacle and, moreover, to prevent the realization of the Coanda effect when attachment of the jet is undesirable.Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Akademii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 177–179, January–February, 1992.  相似文献

An underexpanded jet issuing from a convergent slot and blowing over a surface of convex streamwise curvature was studied experimentally. The jet was confined between side walls, with the slot aspect ratio varying between 40 and 6, but tests showed that in the area of interest close to the slot the flow was effectively two-dimensional. The ratio of slot width to the radius of curvature of the downstream surface varied between 0.05 and 0.33. The main techniques used were Schlieren and shadowgraph to show the jet structure, and surface flow visualization which revealed areas of separation and reattachment. Surface static pressures were also measured on the curved surface. The curved jet proved to have a shock cell structure similar to that of a plane jet. However, the cell structure disappeared more rapidly as the outer shear layer grew more quickly due to the destabilizing effect of the curvature on the turbulence in the shear layer. Even at modest upstream jet pressures, a separated region on the Coanda surface became evident. This region was characterized by a stagnant constant pressure part followed by a region of strongly reversed flow before reattachment took place. The separation was caused by the compression at the end of the first shock cell, with reattachment taking place where expansion in the second cell started. The separated region grew rapidly as the upstream pressure was increased, until, finally, reattachment failed to occur and the jet suddenly broke away from the surface. This work is related to studies of the Coanda flare, where the jet is axisymmetric. The high level of turbulence causes rapid entrainment of air and so gives us clean combustion. However there should be more general application to devices that use the Coanda effect, varying from fluidic devices to blown jet flaps on wings.  相似文献

The flow fields behind elliptic cylinders adjacent to a free surface were investigated experimentally in a circulating water channel. A range of cylinder aspect ratios (AR=2, 3, 4) were considered, while the cross-sectional area of the elliptical cylinder was kept constant. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of cylinder aspect ratio and a free surface on the flow structure in the near-wake behind elliptic cylinders. For each elliptic cylinder, the flow structure was analyzed for various values of the submergence depth of the cylinder beneath the free surface. The flow fields were measured using a single-frame double-exposure PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) system. For each experimental condition, 350 instantaneous velocity fields were obtained and ensemble-averaged to obtain the mean velocity field and spatial distribution of the mean vorticity statistics. The results show that near-wake can be classified into three typical flow patterns: formation of a Coanda flow, generation of substantial jet-like flow, and attachment of this jet flow to the free surface. The general flow structure observed behind the elliptic cylinders resembles the structure previously reported for a circular cylinder submerged near a free surface. However, the wake width and the angle of downward deflection of the shear layer developed from the lower surface of the elliptic cylinder differ from those observed for a circular cylinder. These trends are enhanced as cylinder aspect ratio is increased. In addition, the free surface distortion is also discussed in the paper.  相似文献

Jets of incipient water escaping into the atmosphere through a short channel are photographed. In some experiments. complete disintegration of the jet is observed. The relationship of this phenomenon with intense volume incipience is considered. The role of the Coanda effect upon complete opening of the jet is revealed. Measurement results of the recoil force R of the jets of incipient liquids are presented. Cases of negative thrust caused by the Coanda effect are noted. Some examples of flows with separation zones andmovable contact discontinuities obtained as a result of the numerical integration of the time-dependent equations for an ideal gas are presented. The examples concern a steady annular separation zone on the blunt nose of a body in a supersonic flow, periodic shedding of unsteady discontinuities from a cylinder in a steady uniform subsonic flow with a supercritical Mach number, and the complicated deformation of a contact (tangential) discontinuity, namely, the boundaries of a two-dimensional jet, either subsonic or supersonic, flowing into a cocurrent subsonic low-velocity flow. A multiple increase in the difference grid capacity in the numerical integration of the Euler equations indicates the absence of a noticeable scheme viscosity effect in the examples calculated. The inviscid nature of the separation flows obtained is also confirmed by their well-known counterparts constructed in the ideal incompressible fluid approximation. The time-average velocity fields of the two-dimensional jet and the intensity of its sound field are in reasonable agreement with the available data.  相似文献

One of the many applications of curved wall jets of engineering importance is the Coanda Flare, which is used for burning waste gases in the petroleum industry and which gave rise to this work. The gas jet flows over an axisymmetric tulip shaped body, entraining ambient air and so promoting clean combustion. The object of this work was to calculate the development of the jet with the extra rates of strain imposed by both longitudinal curvature and divergence. A differential ‘partially-parabolic’ technique was used with uncoupling of the streamwise and cross-stream momentum equations, leading to an efficient computer program. The extra rates of strain were modelled by corrections to a mixing length model with the two effects being assumed to be additive. The calculation method was compared with seven test ccases of experimental data. The first five were from published literature, and included the plane wall jet and axisymmetric free jet, and the separate effects of longitudinal curvature and divergence. The lost two cases were measurements of the wall jet flow over a model Coanda Flare. The calculation method gave generally good results for the main features of the flow such as growth rate and velocity decay. Details of the flow were not so well predicted, particularly the turbulent shear stress, as a result of the relatively simple turbulence model employed. The calculation method should provide a useful engineering tool, but some profitable developments could be made, particularly in the area of turbulence modelling.  相似文献

An experimental demonstration of a jet vectoring technique used in our novel spray method called Coanda-assisted Spray Manipulation (CSM) is presented. CSM makes use of the Coanda effect on axisymmetric geometries through the interaction of two jets: a primary jet and a control jet. The primary jet has larger volume flow rate but generally a smaller momentum flux than the control jet. The primary jet flows through the center of a rounded collar. The control jet is parallel to the primary and is adjacent to the convex collar. The Reynolds number range for the primary jet at the exit plane was between 20,000 and 80,000. The flow was in the incompressible Mach number range (Mach < 0.3). The control jet attaches to the convex wall and vectors according to known Coanda effect principles, entraining and vectoring the primary jet, resulting in controllable r − θ directional spraying. Several annular control slots and collar radii were tested over a range of momentum flux ratios to determine the effects of these variables on the vectored jet angle and spreading. Two and Three-component Particle Image Velocimetry systems were used to determine the vectoring angle and the profile of the combined jet in each experiment. The experiments show that the control slot and expansion radius, along with the momentum ratios of the two jets predominantly affected the vectoring angle and profile of the combined jets.  相似文献

High-order accurate schemes are employed to numerically simulate the interaction of a supersonic jet and a co-directional supersonic inflow. A double backward-facing step model is proposed to investigate the interaction between the jet shear layer and the supersonic inflow shear layer. It is found that due to the interaction of the shear layer, a secondary jet is injected into the recirculation zone at the intersection of the two shear layers. The secondary jet produced by the interaction of the two shear layers has a periodicity because of shear layers interaction. The distinction in the shape of double backward-facing steps will induce changes in the period of the secondary jet. The analysis and discussion of the periodicity of the secondary jet are mainly focused in this letter.  相似文献

Results of numerical simulations and experimental investigations of self-oscillations arising in the case of impingement of an overexpanded or underexpanded jet onto an obstacle with a spike are reported. The mechanisms of the emergence and maintaining of self-oscillations for overexpanded and underexpanded jets are elucidated. It is demonstrated that self-oscillations are caused by disturbances in a supersonic jet, which induce mass transfer between the supersonic flow and the region between the shock wave and the obstacle. The feedback is ensured by acoustic waves generated by the radial jet on the obstacle. These waves propagate in the gas surrounding the jet, impinge onto the nozzle exit, and initiate disturbances of the supersonic jet parameters. In the overexpanded jet, these disturbances penetrate into the jet core, where they are amplified in oblique shock waves.  相似文献

The drag of flat plates with spherical recesses was measured using the direct balance method. The experiments were run in a low-turbulence wind tunnel with a cross-section measuring 1000 × 1000 mm and a length of 400 mm. Three surfaces with recesses 7.0, 3.9, and 1.3 mm in diameter and 0.5, 0.3, and 0.2 mm deep, respectively, were tested. It is shown that on the Reynolds and Mach number ranges Re= (3–9)· 106 and M 0.3 the spherical recesses add to the drag of a flat plate in turbulent flow. The recesses have almost no effect on the location of laminar-turbulent transition, which occurs at Ret 3· 106.  相似文献

The present study describes an experimental work to investigate the effect of a nozzle exit reflector on a supersonic jet that is discharged from a convergent–divergent nozzle with a design Mach number of 2.0. An annular reflector is installed at the nozzle exit and its diameter is varied. A high-quality spark schlieren optical system is used to visualize detailed jet structures with and without the reflector. Impact pressure measurement using a pitot probe is also carried out to quantify the reflector’s effect on the supersonic jet which is in the range from an over-expanded to a moderately under-expanded state. The results obtained show that for over-expanded jets, the reflector substantially increases the jet spreading rate and reduces the supersonic length of the jet, compared with moderately under-expanded jets. The reflector’s effect appears more significant in imperfectly expanded jets that have strong shock cell structures, but is negligible in correctly expanded jet.  相似文献
