The center of a graph is defined to be the subgraph induced by the set of vertices that have minimum eccentricities (i.e., minimum distance to the most distant vertices). It is shown that only seven graphs can be centers of maximal outerplanar graphs.  相似文献

A star edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring without bichromatic paths and cycles of length four. In this article, we establish tight upper bounds for trees and subcubic outerplanar graphs, and derive an upper bound for outerplanar graphs.  相似文献

An outerplanar network is an undirected network whose underlying graph is a triangulation of a polygon. We give a linear algorithm for finding maximum flow values between all pairs of nodes in the outerplanar network. Our algorithm constructs the cut-tree of the outerplanar network without using any maximum flow computation.  相似文献

We prove new upper bounds for the thickness and outerthickness of a graph in terms of its orientable and nonorientable genus by applying the method of deleting spanning disks of embeddings to approximate the thickness and outerthickness. We also show that every non-planar toroidal graph can be edge partitioned into a planar graph and an outerplanar graph. This implies that the outerthickness of the torus (the maximum outerthickness of all toroidal graphs) is 3. Finally, we show that all graphs embeddable in the double torus have thickness at most 3 and outerthickness at most 5.  相似文献

In a previous paper by the author joint with Baogang XU published in Discrete Math in 2018, we show that every non-planar toroidal graph can be edge partitioned into a planar graph and an outerplanar graph. This edge partition then implies some results in thickness and outerthickness of toroidal graphs. In particular, if each planar graph has outerthickness at most $2$ (conjectured by Chartrand, Geller and Hedetniemi in 1971 and the confirmation of the conjecture was announced by Gon\c{c}alves in 2005), then the outerthickness of toroidal graphs is at most 3 which is the best possible due to $K_7$. In this paper we continue to study the edge partition for projective planar graphs and Klein bottle embeddable graphs. We show that (1) every non-planar but projective planar graph can be edge partitioned into a planar graph and a union of caterpillar trees; and (2) every non-planar Klein bottle embeddable graph can be edge partitioned into a planar graph and a subgraph of two vertex amalgamation of a caterpillar tree with a cycle with pendant edges. As consequences, the thinkness of projective planar graphs and Klein bottle embeddabe graphs are at most $2$, which are the best possible, and the outerthickness of these graphs are at most $3$.  相似文献

The problem of finding the minimum rank over all symmetric matrices corresponding to a given graph has grown in interest recently. It is well known that the minimum rank of any graph is bounded above by the clique cover number, the minimum number of cliques needed to cover all edges of the graph. We generalize the idea of the clique cover number by defining the rank sum of a cover to be the sum of the minimum ranks of the graphs in the cover. Using this idea we obtain a combinatorial solution to the minimum rank problem for an outerplanar graph. As a consequence the minimum rank of an outerplanar graph is field independent and all outerplanar graphs have a universally optimal matrix. We also consider implications of the main result to the inverse inertia problem.  相似文献

The class of outerplanar graphs is used for testing the average complexity of algorithms on graphs. A random labeled outerplanar graph can be generated by a polynomial algorithm based on the results of an enumeration of such graphs. By a bicyclic (tricyclic) graph we mean a connected graph with cyclomatic number 2 (respectively, 3). We find explicit formulas for the number of labeled connected outerplanar bicyclic and tricyclic graphs with n vertices and also obtain asymptotics for the number of these graphs for large n. Moreover, we obtain explicit formulas for the number of labeled outerplanar bicyclic and tricyclic n-vertex blocks and deduce the corresponding asymptotics for large n.  相似文献

Incidence coloring of a graph G is a mapping from the set of incidences to a color-set C such that adjacent incidences of G are assigned distinct colors. Since 1993, numerous fruitful results as regards incidence coloring have been proved. However, some of them are incorrect. We remedy the error of the proof in [R.A. Brualdi, J.J.Q. Massey, Incidence and strong edge colorings of graphs, Discrete Math. 122 (1993) 51-58] concerning complete bipartite graphs. Also, we give an example to show that an outerplanar graph with Δ=4 is not 5-incidence colorable, which contradicts [S.D. Wang, D.L. Chen, S.C. Pang, The incidence coloring number of Halin graphs and outerplanar graphs, Discrete Math. 256 (2002) 397-405], and prove that the incidence chromatic number of the outerplanar graph with Δ≥7 is Δ+1. Moreover, we prove that the incidence chromatic number of the cubic Halin graph is 5. Finally, to improve the lower bound of the incidence chromatic number, we give some sufficient conditions for graphs that cannot be (Δ+1)-incidence colorable.  相似文献

Given an undirected graph with edge weights, we are asked to find an orientation, that is, an assignment of a direction to each edge, so as to minimize the weighted maximum outdegree in the resulted directed graph. The problem is called MMO, and is a restricted variant of the well-known minimum makespan problem. As in previous studies, it is shown that MMO is in P for trees, weak NP-hard for planar bipartite graphs, and strong NP-hard for general graphs. There are still gaps between those graph classes. The objective of this paper is to show tighter thresholds of complexity: We show that MMO is (i) in P for cactus graphs, (ii) weakly NP-hard for outerplanar graphs, and also (iii) strongly NP-hard for graphs which are both planar and bipartite. This implies the NP-hardness for P4-bipartite, diamond-free or house-free graphs, each of which is a superclass of cactus. We also show (iv) the NP-hardness for series-parallel graphs and multi-outerplanar graphs, and (v) present a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm for graphs with bounded treewidth.  相似文献

In the edge precoloring extension problem, we are given a graph with some of the edges having preassigned colors and it has to be decided whether this coloring can be extended to a proper k‐edge‐coloring of the graph. In list edge coloring every edge has a list of admissible colors, and the question is whether there is a proper edge coloring where every edge receives a color from its list. We show that both problems are NP‐complete on (a) planar 3‐regular bipartite graphs, (b) bipartite outerplanar graphs, and (c) bipartite series‐parallel graphs. An equistable graph is a graph for which the incidence vectors of the maximal stable sets are the 0–1 solutions of a linear equation. A necessary condition and a sufficient condition for equistability are given. They are used to characterize the equistability of various classes of perfect graphs, outerplanar graphs, and pseudothreshold graphs. Some classes of equistable graphs are shown to be closed under graph substitution.  相似文献

The class of outerplanar graphs is minor-closed and can be characterized by two excluded minors: \(K_4\) and \(K_{2,3}\). The class of graphs that contain a vertex whose removal leaves an outerplanar graph is also minor-closed. We provide the complete list of 57 excluded minors for this class.  相似文献

We show that a graph drawing is an outerplanar thrackle if and only if, up to an inversion in the plane, it is Reidemeister equivalent to an odd musquash. This establishes Conway’s thrackle conjecture for outerplanar thrackles. We also extend this result in two directions. First, we show that no pair of vertices of an outerplanar thrackle can be joined by an edge in such a way that the resulting graph drawing is a thrackle. Secondly, we introduce the notion of crossing rank; drawings with crossing rank 0 are generalizations of outerplanar drawings. We show that all thrackles of crossing rank 0 are outerplanar. We also introduce the notion of an alternating cycle drawing, and we show that a thrackled cycle is alternating if and only if it is outerplanar.  相似文献

The clique number of an undirected graph G is the maximum order of a complete subgraph of G and is a well‐known lower bound for the chromatic number of G. Every proper k‐coloring of G may be viewed as a homomorphism (an edge‐preserving vertex mapping) of G to the complete graph of order k. By considering homomorphisms of oriented graphs (digraphs without cycles of length at most 2), we get a natural notion of (oriented) colorings and oriented chromatic number of oriented graphs. An oriented clique is then an oriented graph whose number of vertices and oriented chromatic number coincide. However, the structure of oriented cliques is much less understood than in the undirected case. In this article, we study the structure of outerplanar and planar oriented cliques. We first provide a list of 11 graphs and prove that an outerplanar graph can be oriented as an oriented clique if and only if it contains one of these graphs as a spanning subgraph. Klostermeyer and MacGillivray conjectured that the order of a planar oriented clique is at most 15, which was later proved by Sen. We show that any planar oriented clique on 15 vertices must contain a particular oriented graph as a spanning subgraph, thus reproving the above conjecture. We also provide tight upper bounds for the order of planar oriented cliques of girth k for all .  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the ratio of the numbers of odd and even cycles in outerplanar graphs. We verify that the ratio generally diverges to infinity as the order of a graph diverges to infinity. We also give sharp estimations of the ratio for several classes of outerplanar graphs, and obtain a constant upper bound of the ratio for some of them. Furthermore, we consider similar problems in graphs with some pairs of forbidden subgraphs/minors, and propose a challenging problem concerning claw-free graphs.  相似文献

In this paper, we study homomorphisms of 2-edge-colored graphs, that is graphs with edges colored with two colors. We consider various graph classes (outerplanar graphs, partial 2-trees, partial 3-trees, planar graphs) and the problem is to find, for each class, the smallest number of vertices of a 2-edge-colored graph H such that each graph of the considered class admits a homomorphism to H.  相似文献

Chartrand and Harary have shown that if G is a non-outerplanar graph such that, for every edge e, both the deletion G\e and the contraction G/e of e from G are outerplanar, then G is isomorphic to K4 or K2,3. An α-outerplanar graph is a graph which is not outerplanar such that, for some edge α, both G\α and G/α are outerplanar. We describe various results for the class of α-outerplanar graphs and obtain a characterization of the class. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
