We study adiabatic transformation in optical waveguides with discrete translational symmetry. We calculate the reflection and transmission coefficient for a structure consisting of a slab waveguide that is adiabatically transformed into a photonic crystal waveguide and then back into a slab waveguide. The calculation yields high transmission over a wide frequency range of the photonic crystal waveguide band and indicates efficient coupling between the slab waveguide and the photonic crystal waveguide. Other applications of adiabatic mode transformation in photonic crystal waveguides and the coupled-resonator optical waveguides are also discussed.  相似文献

For what is the first time to our knowledge, we have successfully evaporated a tapered film of bromothymol blue (BTB) onto a potassium ion-exchanged (PIE) waveguide to form a composite optical waveguide (COWG) for trace-ammonia detection. The BTB film has a high refractive index (1.69) and a smooth surface and is transparent to a 633-nm laser beam in air. In the COWG structure, the BTB film serves as a single-mode waveguide, and adiabatic transition of the TE(0) mode was realized between the BTB waveguide and the PIE waveguide with both BTB tapers. In the presence of ammonia, the BTB film changes color from yellow to blue, which causes absorption of the 633-nm guided wave. Our experimental results demonstrate that such a guided wave absorption-based ammonia-gas sensor is much more sensitive than one based on evanescent-wave absorption. A detection limit of part in 10(9) of ammonia has been realized for a BTB film-PIE glass COWG.  相似文献

The film mode matching method was used to analyze the inter waveguide coupling losses in a passive asymmetric twin waveguide caused by waveguide width and refractive index variation for both resonant and adiabatic coupling at a wavelength of 1,550 nm. The reasons for power losses are shown. It is demonstrated that tapering the mode beating section of the resonant coupler can increase the fabrication tolerance of resonant coupling without increasing the coupling length.  相似文献

We investigate the energy transfer of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) based on adiabatic passage in a non-Hermitian waveguide composed of three coupled graphene sheets. The SPPs can completely transfer between two outer waveguides via the adiabatic dark mode as the waveguides are lossless and the coupling length is long enough. However, the loss of graphene can lead to breakdown of adiabatic transfer schemes. By utilizing the coupled mode theory, we propose three approaches to cancel the nonadiabatic coupling by adding certain gain or loss in respect waveguides. Moreover, the coupling length of waveguide is remarkably decreased. The study may find interesting application in optical switches on a deep-subwavelength scale.  相似文献

The characteristics of electromagnetic waves in a narrowing waveguide are investigated. A method for field analysis is developed based on the application of transverse modes parametrically dependent on the longitudinal coordinate. For a circular cross section waveguide, a system of equations for the wave amplitudes is obtained, the waves being coupled owing to a variable tilt of the walls. It is shown that in the adiabatic approximation, there exist independent eigenwaves whose structure reflects the field energy density variation due to the waveguide radius variation. A detailed analytical and numerical investigation of these fields has been carried out for a waveguide with a special profile of hypergeometric type. The applicability of the adiabatic approximation is studied and conversion of the fundamental mode into higher-order modes is assessed. The amplitudes of the higher-order modes are obtained using the Green function for ordinary differential equations. The region of the waveguide parameters is found where the higher-order mode amplitudes are not great and the adiabatic approximation is highly accurate. The dependence of the transmittance of a semi-infinite waveguide on the input radiation characteristics is obtained. It is established that the field amplitudes at the waveguide output strongly depend on the wavelength of the input radiation, on its transverse structure, and the waveguide profile steepness. The greatest output fields take place in the case of an abrupt dependence of the waveguide radius on the longitudinal coordinate.  相似文献

Two mode-evolution-based low-loss compact-size integrated polarization rotators and transformers are presented. They are designed to fulfill the tasks of rotating mode polarizations between Gaussian-like strip waveguide modes and non-Gaussian-like slotted waveguide modes, as well as the mode transforming between horizontal and vertical slotted waveguides. Consisting of several adiabatic tapers, the presented devices can achieve complete polarization rotations and transformations between different classes of waveguide modes with a device length of tens of micrometers and with a negligible insertion loss.  相似文献

The concept of adiabatic mode transformation between silicon waveguide and surface plasmon-polariton modes in subwavelength metal-dielectric slots is investigated. The mode transformer consists of a modulated-index slot region, which is bound by two metal slabs. Using the design scheme, we will show that the optical dispersion of a modulated-index metal slot waveguide can be engineered well above the silicon light-line on a large wavelength region, allowing direct phase-matching between surface plasmon polaritons and traditional waveguide modes. Based on full-field, finite difference simulations, we demonstrate that reversible mode conversion can be achieved within submicrometer length scales.  相似文献

With the use of adiabatic and WKB approximations for the mode representation of an acoustic field excited by a tone source in an oceanic waveguide smoothly varying along the track, dependences of the characteristic spatial scales of the phenomenon of diffraction focusing are obtained. Asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues (energy levels) of the 2D and 3D stationary Schrödinger operators describing the states of a quantum particle in the waveguide formed by soft walls characterized by a periodic parabolic confinement potential slowly varying along the waveguide axis are presented. The formulas are derived by a unified procedure based on adiabatic approximation and are illustrated in the first part of this paper by an example of a 2D straight waveguide. This waveguide can be used for simulating some effects in nanostructures and can be viewed as a simple linear model describing electronic transport in a long molecule consisting of so-called “sites.” The accuracy of the obtained asymptotic eigenvalues and the possibility of using the adiabatic approximation are discussed. Examples of quantum states with large energies to which the adiabatic approximation does not apply are given.  相似文献

Abstract

A new optical filter design based on a two-dimensional photonic crystal ring resonator structure with an N-channel model is proposed in this article. This study also shows that modifying the scatter radius and the waveguide width can significantly improve the performance of the original structure, which can solve the mode mismatch problem for output waveguide. Here, an example of a 16-channel photonic crystal ring resonator is provided; wavelength spacing of 1.6 nm and a high quality factor Q of 6,000 were achieved. The optical filter would be a potential key component in the application of dense wavelength division multiplexer devices.  相似文献

With a tapered double-clad all-glass ytterbium fiber as a gain medium, a maximum output power of over 200 W at 1079 nm and a slope efficiency of over 70% were demonstrated. The tapered double-clad fiber concept allows for using low-brightness diode bars and results in cost-effective and efficient high-power fiber lasers. The adiabatic conical fiber gain waveguide combines improved pump absorption owing to enhanced mode mixing in the pump cladding, low-noise single fundamental mode operation with M(2)< or =1.02, and strong potential for significant power scaling.  相似文献

Basic steps in developing an original method of adiabatic modes that makes it possible to solve the direct and inverse problems of simulating and designing three-dimensional multilayered smoothly irregular open waveguide structures are described. A new element in the method is that an approximate solution of Maxwell’s equations is made to obey “inclined” boundary conditions at the interfaces between themedia being considered. These boundary conditions take into account the obliqueness of planes tangent to nonplanar boundaries between the media and lead to new equations for coupled vector quasiwaveguide hybrid adiabatic modes. Solutions of these equations describe the phenomenon of “entanglement” of two linear polarizations of an irregular multilayered waveguide, the appearance of a new mode in an entangled state, and the effect of rotation of the polarization plane of quasiwaveguide modes. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated by considering the example of numerically simulating a thin-film generalized waveguide Lüneburg lens.  相似文献

First some important parameters are optimized for the structural design of a polymer arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexer around the central wavelength of 1.55 μm with the wavelength spacing of 1.6 nm. These parameters include the thickness and width of the guide core, mode effective refractive indices and group refractive index, diffraction order, pitch of adjacent waveguides, length difference of adjacent arrayed waveguides, focal length of slab waveguides, free spectral range (FSR), the number of input/output (I/O) channels, and that of arrayed waveguides. Then the bent angles, radii and lengths of all the input/output channels and arrayed waveguides are determined. Finally, a schematic waveguide layout of this device is presented, which contains 2 slabs, 11 input channels, 11 output channels, and 91 arrayed waveguides.  相似文献

Abstract

?olc-type wavelength filters have been demonstrated in a 52-mm long periodically poled titanium-diffused lithium niobate channel waveguide with a domain period of 16.6 μm. At room temperature, the center wavelength and the full-width at half maximum of the filter were about 1,272.49 nm and 0.23 nm, respectively. The nearest side-lobe is about 7 dB. New structures of flat-top bandpass filters and an optical add/drop multiplexer utilizing ?olc-type TE?TM mode converters are proposed for the first time.  相似文献

A thin dielectric waveguide with a subwavelength diameter can exhibit very small transmission loss only if its diameter is greater than a threshold value, while for smaller diameters, waveguide loss grows dramatically. The threshold diameter of transition between these waveguiding and nonwaveguiding regimes is primarily determined by the wavelength of propagating light and, to a much lesser degree, by the characteristic length of the waveguide's long-range nonuniformity. For this reason, the transmission spectrum of a thin waveguide allows immediate and quite accurate determination of its thickness. An experimental test of these facts is performed for a tapered microfiber. Good agreement with the recently developed theory of adiabatic microfiber tapers is demonstrated.  相似文献

本文利用具有海面相移修正的本征函数的WKBZ近似,并同时考虑波导简正波和海底反射简正波的贡献,提出了适合于水平缓变水下声道的WKBZ绝热简正波理论。数值结果表明,会聚区声场主要由波导简正波决定,而影区声场主要由海底反射简正波决定。在菲律宾海中,频率范围在109HZ至860HZ,距离至250km范围时,用WKBZ绝热简正波理论计算的结果与实验数据符合得很好。  相似文献

A single-ridge waveguide with a symmetrical longitudinal trough, designated as a ridge-trough waveguide has been used as a transition in a V-band (50-75 GHz) wafer probe recently. In this paper, the field patterns for the dominant TE mode and the first higher TE mode in ridge-trough waveguide with different configurations are presented by finite element method. The field patterns in this paper have important values for us to understand the transmission characteristics of ridge-trough waveguide, and will be of practical significance in designing ridge-trough waveguide components in microwave and millimeter wave engineering.  相似文献

An 8‐channel hybrid (de)multiplexer to simultaneously achieve mode‐ and polarization‐division‐(de)multiplexing is proposed and demonstrated experimentally on a silicon‐on‐insulator platform to improve the link capacity of an on‐chip optical interconnect. The present hybrid (de)multiplexer has four channels for each polarization. A polarization beam splitter based on a three‐waveguide coupler is used to combine/separate the fundamental modes of TE‐ and TM‐polarizations (TE0 and TM0). Six asymmetric directional couplers are cascaded for (de)multiplexing the high‐order modes (TE1, TE2, TE3, TM1, TM2, and TM3). The experimental results show all eight channels have low loss and low crosstalk (<−10 dB) over a ∼ 30 nm wavelength range.  相似文献
