A study was undertaken to assess the use of excitation flip angles greater than 90° for T1 weighted spin-echo (SE) imaging with a single 180° refocusing pulse and short TR values. Theoretical predictions of signal intensity for SE images with excitation pulse angles of 90–180° were calculated based on the Bloch equations and then measured experimentally from MR images of MnCl2 phantoms of various concentrations. Liver signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and liver-spleen contrast-to-noise ratios (CNR) were measured from breathhold MR images of the upper abdomen in 16 patients using 90 and 110° excitation flip angles. The theoretical predictions showed significant improvements in SNR with excitation flip angles >90°, which were more pronounced at small TR values. The phantom studies showed reasonably good agreement with the theoretical predictions in correlating the excitation pulse angle with signal intensity. In the human imaging studies, the 110° excitation pulse angle resulted in a 7.4% (p < .01) increase in liver SNR and an 8.2% (p = .2) increase in liver-spleen CNR compared to the 90° pulse angle at TR = 275 ms. Increased signal intensity resulting from the use of large flip angle excitation pulses with a single echo SE pulse sequence was predicted and confirmed experimentally in phantoms and humans.  相似文献

It is shown that spatially selective inversion and saturation can be achieved by concatenation of RF pulses with lower flip angles. A concatenation rule which enables global doubling of the flip angle of any given excitation pulse applied to initial z magnetization is proposed. In this fashion, the selectivity of the single pulse is preserved, making the high selectivity achievable in the low flip-angle regime available for inversion and large flip-angle saturation purposes. The profile quality achievable with exemplary concatenated pulses is investigated in comparison with adiabatic inversion. It is verified that by using concatenated inversion in the transfer insensitive labeling technique (TILT), the MT artifact is suppressed. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.  相似文献

A phantom with T1 and T2 relaxation times encompassing normal liver and liver lesions was constructed to evaluate fast magnetic resonance pulse sequences using TR from 21-100 milliseconds, TE 12-60 milliseconds and flip angles from 5 degrees-90 degrees. Ten of these fast MR sequences were then selected and compared with conventional spin-echo sequences in normal volunteers (n = 3) and in patients with liver lesions (n = 6). Subjectively, the fast MR sequences eliminated motion artefacts. Objectively, 8 of 10 fast sequences had signal-to-noise ratios comparable to spin-echo imaging whereas only 2 of 10 had contrast-to-noise ratios that were similar to spin-echo imaging. This preliminary study, performed at 1.5 Tesla, does not show any clear-cut advantage of fast imaging over spin-echo imaging in the detection of liver lesions. The use of a liver tissue equivalent phantom provides a rapid, practical approach in evaluation of fast scans.  相似文献

Conventional "proton density" and "T2-weighted" spin-echo images are susceptible to motion induced artifact, which is exacerbated by lipid signals. Gradient moment nulling can reduce motion artifact but lengthens the minimum TE, degrading the "proton density" contrast. We designed a pulse sequence capable of optimizing proton density and T2-weighted contrast while suppressing lipid signals and motion induced artifacts. Proton density weighting was obtained by rapid readout gradient reversal immediately after the excitation RF pulse, within a conventional spin-echo sequence. By analyzing the behavior of the macroscopic magnetization and optimizing excitation flip angle, we suppressed T1 contribution to the image, thereby enhancing proton density and T2-weighted contrast with a two- to four-fold reduction of repetition time. This permitted an increased number of averages to be used, reducing motion induced artifacts. Fat suppression in the presence of motion was investigated in two groups of 8 volunteers each by (i) modified Dixon technique, (ii) selective excitation, and (iii) hybrid of both. Elimination of fat signal by the first technique was relatively uniform across the field of view, but it did not fully suppress the ghosts originating from fat motion. Selective excitation, while sensitive to the main field inhomogeneity, largely eliminated the ghosts (0.21 +/- 0.05 vs. 0.29 +/- 0.06, p less than 0.01). The hybrid of both techniques combined with bandwidth optimization, however, showed the best results (0.17 +/- 0.04, p less than 0.001). Variable flip-angle imaging allows optimization of image contrast which, along with averaging and effective fat suppression, significantly improves gradient- and spin-echo imaging, particularly in the presence of motion.

In this paper the effects of reducing the flip angle of the 90-degree observation pulse in inversion recovery imaging are described and analyzed. When incorporated in an IR sequence with a short inversion time (STIR), reduction to the 90-degree pulse allows a significant shortening of the repetition time without loss in contrast, although at the expense of some signal/noise. The generalized STIR sequence thus combines the previously reported advantages of a conventional STIR sequence--suppression of ghost artifacts from abdominal wall movement, suppression of chemical shift and boundary artifacts, additive effects of N(H), T1 and T2 on image contrast--with reduced power deposition and the advantages resulting from shorter repetition times, viz, single heart-beat triggering, increased number of signal averages for suppression of motion artifacts, acquisition of interleaved contiguous slices without cross-talk or considerable time savings when the number of required slices is limited. The proposed method is demonstrated and experimentally verified by imaging experiments on phantoms and human subjects. In principle the method is applicable to all cases where STIR imaging has been proven to be successful.  相似文献

Optimizing tissue contrast in magnetic resonance imaging   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Magnetic resonance imaging demands that tissue contrast and signal-to-noise advantages be sought in each component of the imaging system. One component of magnetic resonance imaging in which contrast and signal-to-noise ratios are easily manipulated is in the choice of pulse sequences and interpulse delay times. This article provides a general method for determining the best choices of interpulse delay times in pulse sequences and applies that method to saturation recovery, inversion recovery, and spin-echo sequences. Saturation recovery and inversion recovery sequences with rephasing pulses, and tissues with unequal hydrogen densities are considered. Optimization of pulse sequences is carried out for the two distinct cases of (a) a fixed number of sequence repetitions and (b) a fixed total imaging time. Analytic expressions are derived or approximate expressions are provided for the interpulse delay times that optimize contrast-to-noise ratios in each pulse sequence. The acceptable range of interpulse delay times to obtain reasonable contrast using each pulse sequence is discussed.  相似文献

Spatially selective excitation pulses have been designed to produce uniform flip angles in the presence of the RF and static field inhomogeneities typically encountered in MRI studies of the human brain at 7 T. Pulse designs are based upon non-selective, composite pulses numerically optimized for the desired performance over prescribed ranges of field inhomogeneities. The non-selective pulses are subsequently transformed into spatially selective pulses with the same field-insensitive properties through modification of the spectral composition of the individual sub-pulses which are then executed in conjunction with an oscillating gradient waveform. An in-depth analysis of the performance of these RF pulses is presented in terms of total pulse durations, slice profiles, linearity of in-slice magnetization phase, sensitivity to RF and static field variations, and signal loss due to T(2) effects. Both simulations and measurements in phantoms and in the human brain are used to evaluate pulses with nominal flip angles of 45° and 90°. Target slice thickness in all cases is 2mm. Results indicate that the described class of field-insensitive RF pulses is capable of improving flip-angle uniformity in 7 T human brain imaging. There appears to be a subset of pulses with durations ?10 ms for which non-linearities in the magnetization phase are minimal and signal loss due to T(2) decay is not prohibitive. Such pulses represent practical solutions for achieving uniform flip angles in the presence of the large field inhomogeneities common to high-field human imaging and help to better establish the performance limits of high-field imaging systems with single-channel transmission.  相似文献

Hyperpolarized 13C offers high signal-to-noise ratios for imaging metabolic activity in vivo, but care must be taken when designing pulse sequences because the magnetization cannot be recovered once it has decayed. It has a short lifetime, on the order of minutes, and gets used up by each RF excitation. In this paper, we present a new dynamic chemical-shift imaging method that uses specialized RF pulses designed to maintain most of the hyperpolarized substrate while providing adequate SNR for the metabolic products. These are multiband, variable flip angle, spectral-spatial RF pulses that use spectral selectivity to minimally excite the injected prepolarized 13C-pyruvate substrate. The metabolic products of lactate and alanine are excited with a larger flip angle to increase SNR. This excitation was followed by an RF amplitude insensitive double spin-echo and an echo-planar flyback spectral-spatial readout gradient. In vivo results in rats and mice are presented showing improvements over constant flip angle RF pulses. The metabolic products are observable for a longer window because the low pyruvate flip angle preserves magnetization, allowing for improved observation of spatially varying metabolic reactions.  相似文献

To explain the signal behavior in 2D-TrueFISP imaging, a slice excitation profile should be considered that describes a variation of effective flip angles and magnetization phases after excitation. These parameters can be incorporated into steady-state equations to predict the final signal within a pixel. The use of steady-state equations assumes that excitation occurs instantaneously, although in reality this is a nonlinear process. In addition, often the flip angle variation within the slice excitation profile is solely considered when using steady-state equations, while TrueFISP is especially known for its sensitivity to phase variations. The purpose of this study was therefore to evaluate the precision of steady-state equations in calculating signal intensities in 2D TrueFISP imaging. To that end, steady-state slice profiles and corresponding signal intensities were calculated as function of flip angle, RF phase advance and pulse shape. More complex Bloch simulations were considered as a gold standard, which described every excitation within the sequence until steady state was reached. They were used to analyze two different methods based on steady-state equations. In addition, measurements on phantoms were done with corresponding imaging parameters. Although the Bloch simulations described the steady-state slice profile formation better than methods based on steady-state equations, the latter performed well in predicting the steady-state signal resulting from it. In certain cases the phase variation within the slice excitation profile did not even have to be taken into account.  相似文献

It is clearly demonstrated that the proper application of the inversion recovery imaging pulse sequence is dependent on the method of image reconstruction and the selection of TI for optimum tissue contrast. There are two methods of 2DFT image reconstruction of IR sequence time-domain raw data. The first is a modulus-image reconstruction algorithm (contrast-obliterating option), and the second is a phase-correction routine for reconstructing "phase-sensitive" true IR-images. The second option generates proper "in-phase" images, retains proper scale of contrast, but can invert the algebraic sign of image-values under certain conditions. A series of "phase-sensitive" and "modulus" reconstructed brain images, obtained with conventional and optimized new IR pulse sequences, are shown to demonstrate these effects. They illustrate the considerable advantages gained, in practical clinical situations, if one generates "phase-sensitive" true IR-images from IR-sequence raw data at optimum TI for tissue contrast enhancement.  相似文献

Three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has shown great potential for studying the impact of prematurity and pathology on brain development. We have investigated the potential of optimized T1-weighted 3D magnetization-prepared rapid gradient-echo imaging (MP-RAGE) for obtaining contrast between white matter (WM) and gray matter (GM) in neonates at 3 T. Using numerical simulations, we predicted that the inversion time (TI) for obtaining strongest contrast at 3 T is approximately 2 s for neonates, whereas for adults, this value is approximately 1.3 s. The optimal neonatal TI value was found to be insensitive to reasonable variations of the assumed T1 relaxation times. The maximum theoretical contrast for neonates was found to be approximately one third of that for adults. Using the optimized TI values, MP-RAGE images were obtained from seven neonates and seven adults at 3 T, and the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) was measured for WM versus five GM regions. Compared to adults, neonates exhibited lower CNR between cortical GM and WM and showed a different pattern of regional variation in CNR. These results emphasize the importance of sequence optimization specifically for neonates and demonstrate the challenge in obtaining strong contrast in neonatal brain with T1-weighted 3D imaging.  相似文献

In order to predict the most sensitive MR imaging sequence for detecting liver metastases at 1.5 T, in vivo measurements of T1 and T2 relaxation times and proton density were obtained using multipoint techniques. Based on these measurements, two-dimensional contrast contour plots were constructed demonstrating signal intensity contrast between hepatic lesions and surrounding liver parenchyma for different pulse sequences and pulse timing parameters. The data predict that inversion recovery spin echo (IRSE) imaging should yield the greatest contrast between liver metastases and liver parenchyma at 1.5 T, followed by short tau inversion recovery (STIR) and spin-echo (SE) pulse sequences. T2-weighted SE images provided greater liver/lesion contrast than T1-weighted SE pulse sequences. Calculated T1, T2, and proton density values of the spleen were similar to those of hepatic metastatic lesions, indicating that the signal intensity of the spleen may be used as an internal standard to predict the signal intensity of hepatic metastases on T1- and T2-weighted images at 1.5 T.  相似文献

The dual echo steady-state (DESS) sequence has been shown successful in achieving fast T2 mapping with good precision. Under-estimation of T2, however, becomes increasingly prominent as the flip angle decreases. In 3D DESS imaging, therefore, the derived T2 values would become a function of the slice location in the presence of non-ideal slice profile of the excitation RF pulse. Furthermore, the pattern of slice-dependent variation in T2 estimates is dependent on the RF pulse waveform. Multi-slice 2D DESS imaging provides better inter-slice consistency, but the signal intensity is subject to integrated effects of within-slice distribution of the actual flip angle. Consequently, T2 measured using 2D DESS is prone to inaccuracy even at the designated flip angle of 90°. In this study, both phantom and human experiments demonstrate the above phenomena in good agreement with model prediction.  相似文献

This work explores slice profile effects in 2D slice-selective gradient-echo MRI of hyperpolarized nuclei. Two different sequences were investigated: a Spoiled Gradient Echo sequence with variable flip angle (SPGR-VFA) and a balanced Steady-State Free Precession (SSFP) sequence. It is shown that in SPGR-VFA the distribution of flip angles across the slice present in any realistically shaped radiofrequency (RF) pulse leads to large excess signal from the slice edges in later RF views, which results in an undesired non-constant total transverse magnetization, potentially exceeding the initial value by almost 300% for the last RF pulse. A method to reduce this unwanted effect is demonstrated, based on dynamic scaling of the slice selection gradient. SSFP sequences with small to moderate flip angles (<40°) are also shown to preserve the slice profile better than the most commonly used SPGR sequence with constant flip angle (SPGR-CFA). For higher flip angles, the slice profile in SSFP evolves in a manner similar to SPGR-CFA, with depletion of polarization in the center of the slice.  相似文献

The dynamics of 23Na during completely balanced steady-state free precession (SSFP) have been studied in numerical simulations and experiments. Results from both agree well. It is shown that during SSFP multiple quantum coherences are excited and that their excitation affects the observable signal. The signal response to the sequence parameters (flip angle, TR, and RF pulse phase cycle) shows a structure which can not be described by the Bloch equations. Due to excitation of T31 (s,a), the amplitude ratio of the fast and slowly decaying components deviates from 3:2 and is a function of the sequence parameters. The results shown here represent a basis for the implementation and optimization of 23Na-SSFP imaging sequences.  相似文献

A near-resonance expansion of the solution to the Bloch equations in the presence of a radiofrequency (RF) pulse is presented in this paper. The first-order approximation explicitly demonstrates the nonlinear nature of the Bloch equations and precisely relates the excitation profile with the RF pulse when the flip angle is less than π/2. As an application of this solution, we present a procedure for designing RF pulses to generate symmetric excitation profiles with arbitrary shapes for new encoding approaches such as wavelet encoding.  相似文献

A magnetic resonance imaging method is presented for imaging of heterogeneous broad linewidth materials. This method allows for distortionless relaxation weighted imaging by obtaining multiple phase encoded k-space data points with each RF excitation pulse train. The use of this method, turbo spin echo single-point imaging-(turboSPI), leads to decreased imaging times compared to traditional constant-time imaging techniques, as well as the ability to introduce spin-spin relaxation contrast through the use of longer effective echo times. Imaging times in turboSPI are further decreased through the use of low flip angle steady-state excitation. Two-dimensional images of paramagnetic doped agarose phantoms were obtained, demonstrating the contrast and resolution characteristics of the sequence, and a method for both amplitude and phase deconvolution was demonstrated for use in high-resolution turboSPI imaging. Three-dimensional images of a partially water-saturated porous volcanic aggregate (T(2L) approximately 200 ms, Deltanu(1/2) approximately 2500 Hz) contained in a hardened white Portland cement matrix (T(2L) approximately 0.5 ms, Deltanu(1/2) approximately 2500 Hz) and a water-saturated quartz sand (T(2) approximately 300 ms, T(2)(*) approximately 800 microseconds) are shown.  相似文献

There is increasing interest in imaging short T2 species which show little or no signal with conventional magnetic resonance (MR) pulse sequences. In this paper, we describe the use of three-dimensional ultrashort echo time (3D UTE) sequences with TEs down to 8 μs for imaging of these species. Image contrast was generated with acquisitions using dual echo 3D UTE with echo subtraction, dual echo 3D UTE with rescaled subtraction, long T2 saturation 3D UTE, long T2 saturation dual echo 3D UTE with echo subtraction, single adiabatic inversion recovery 3D UTE, single adiabatic inversion recovery dual echo 3D UTE with echo subtraction and dual adiabatic inversion recovery 3D UTE. The feasibility of using these approaches was demonstrated in in vitro and in vivo imaging of calcified cartilage, aponeuroses, menisci, tendons, ligaments and cortical bone with a 3-T clinical MR scanner. Signal-to-noise ratios and contrast-to-noise ratios were used to compare the techniques.  相似文献
