We prove an early announcement by Knaster on a decomposition of the plane. Then we establish an announcement by Anderson saying that the plane annulus admits a continuous decomposition into pseudo-arcs such that the quotient space is a simple closed curve. This provides a new plane curve, ``a selectible circle of pseudo-arcs", and answers some questions of Lewis.

In this paper, we introduce generalized cyclic C-contractions through p num-ber of subsets of a probabilistic metric space and establish two fixed point results for such contractions. In our first theorem we use the Hadzic type t-norm. In our next theorem we use Lukasiewicz t-norm. Our results generalize the results of Choudhury and Bhandari [11]. It is proved that a complete metric space topologically contains the Sierpinski universal plane curve if and only if it has a subset with so-called bypass property, i.e. it has a subset containing an arc such that for each and for each open arc with , there exists an arbitrary small arc in joining the two components of .

The main result of this paper is a fixed point theorem of self-mappings in Menger spaces which satisfy certain inequality.
This inequality involves a class of real functions which we call Φ-functions. As a corollary we obtain a result in the corresponding
metric spaces. The result is supported by an example. The class of real functions we have used is the conceptual extension
of altering distance functions used in metric fixed point theory.

It is shown that the homeomorphism groups of the (generalized) Sierpinski carpet and the universal Menger continua are not zero-dimensional. These results were corollaries to a 1966 theorem of Brechner. New proofs were needed because we also show that Brechner's proof is inadequate. The method by which we obtain our results, the construction of closed imbeddings of complete Erdos space in the homeomorphism groups, is of independent interest.

This paper presents a full catalogue, up to conjugacy and subgroups of finite index, of all matrix groups that give rise to a continuous wavelet transform with associated irreducible quasi-regular representation. For each group in this class, coorbit theory allows to consistently define spaces of sparse signals, and to construct atomic decompositions converging simultaneously in a whole range of these spaces. As an application of the classification, we investigate the existence of compactly supported admissible vectors and atoms for the groups. 相似文献

A new construction of semi-free actions on Menger manifolds is presented. As an application we prove a theorem about simultaneous coexistence of countably many semi-free actions of compact metric zero-dimensional groups with the prescribed fixed-point sets: Let be a compact metric zero-dimensional group, represented as the direct product of subgroups , a -manifold and (resp., ) its pseudo-interior (resp., pseudo-boundary). Then, given closed subsets of , there exists a -action on such that (1) and are invariant subsets of ; and (2) each is the fixed point set of any element .

In the present work we introduce a new type of contraction mapping by using a specific function and obtain certain fixed point results in Menger spaces. In this work, we propose a proximal algorithm for unconstrained optimization on the cone of symmetric semidefinite positive matrices. It appears to be the first in the proximal class on the set of methods that convert a Symmetric Definite Positive Optimization in Nonlinear Optimization. It replaces the main iteration of the conceptual proximal point algorithm by a sequence of nonlinear programming problems on the cone of diagonal definite positive matrices that has the structure of the positive orthant of the Euclidian vector space. We are motivated by results of the classical proximal algorithm extended to Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive sectional curvature. An important example of such a manifold is the space of symmetric definite positive matrices, where the metrics is given by the Hessian of the standard barrier function −lndet(X). Observing the obvious fact that proximal algorithms do not depend on the geodesics, we apply those ideas to develop a proximal point algorithm for convex functions in this Riemannian metric. 相似文献

We prove a new inequality valid in any two-dimensional normed space. As an application, it is shown that the identity mapping on the unit ball of an infinite-dimensional uniformly convex Banach space is the mean of n uniformly continuous retractions from the unit ball onto the unit sphere, for every n?3.
