Common building materials collected from Xianyang, China were analyzed for the natural radioactivity of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K using γ-ray spectroscopy. The average activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the studied building materials ranges from 13.4 to 69.9, 13.1–99.1 and 124.7–915.1 Bq kg?1, respectively. The measured activity concentrations for these radionuclides were compared with the reported data of other countries and with the worldwide average activity of soil. To assess the radiation hazard of the natural radioactivity in all samples to the people, the radium equivalent activity, external hazard index, internal hazard index, indoor absorbed dose rate and total annual effective dose were estimated. The radium equivalent activities of the studied samples are below the internationally accepted values. The external hazard index and internal hazard index of all analyzed building materials are less than unity. The mean values of indoor absorbed dose rate for all building materials except for lime are higher than the world population-weighted average of 84 nGy h?1 and the total annual effective dose values of building materials are lower than 1 mSv y?1 except for some cyan brick samples. The study shows the measured building materials do not pose significant source of radiation hazard and are safe for use in the construction of dwellings.  相似文献

Natural radioactivity in the aquatic media has been determined by collecting samples of river, stream and drinking water from the northwestern areas of Pakistan. The concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th have been measured using a low background gamma-spectrometer and a 10 cm3 planar intrinsic high purity germanium detector. The annual ingestion of these radionuclides, using local consumption rates (average over the whole population) of 0.9 l.d-1, were estimated to be 49.2, 6.2 and 1.1 Bq.y-1 for 40K, 226Ra and 232Th, respectively. A comparison of the annual intakes of these radionuclides, using annual consumption rates of NCRP, ICRP and FBSP shows that the contribution from natural radionuclides to annual intake is slightly greater for NCRP than for ICRP and FBSP consumption rates. However, the estimated values and weighted means of these radionuclides compare well with the world average. The annual effective dose equivalent from drinking water was found to be 3.6.10-6 mSv.y-1 (226Ra), 3.2.10-12 mSv.y-1 (232Th) and 2.1.10-6 mSv.y-1 (40K). These values are lower than those given by NCRP.  相似文献

The natural radioactivity of soils at Yelagiri hills has been studied in this paper. The radioactivities of 25 samples have been measured with a NaI(Tl) detector. The radioactivity concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K ranged from ≤2.17 to 53.23, 13.54 to 89.89 and from 625.09 to 2207.3 Bq kg?1, respectively. The measured activity concentrations for these radionuclides were compared with world average activity of soil. The average activity concentration of 232Th in the present study is 1.19 times higher than world median value while the activity of 238U and 40K is found to be lower. In order to evaluate the radiological hazard of the natural radioactivity, the radium equivalent activity Raeq, the absorbed dose rate DR, the annual effective dose rate and the external hazard index (Hex) have been calculated and compared with the internationally approved values. The study provides background radioactivity concentrations in Yelagiri hills.  相似文献

Natural radioactivity of the commonly used building materials in Xining of China was measured using gamma-ray spectrometer system comprising a NaI(Tl) detector. Radioactivity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the studied samples range from 11.6 to 120.6, 10.2 to 107.1 and 228.0 to 1,036.2 Bq kg?1, respectively. The concentrations for these natural radionuclides were compared with the reported data of other countries and the mean value for soil. Radium equivalent activity, indoor air absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose rate as well as external and internal hazard indices were calculated to assess radiological hazards for people living in dwelling made of the building materials. The radiological hazard assessment results show that the studied building materials, except for some aerated concrete block samples, are safe for use in construction of dwellings in the study area and do not pose any significant source of radiation hazard.  相似文献

The concentrations of natural radionuclides in the sediments of Ogun river in South Western Nigeria have been measured and determined using gamma-ray spectrometry. The mean activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra, and 232Th at different locations along the course of the river were found to vary from 370.99±19.26 Bq/kg (at Olopade) to 608.02±24.66 Bq/kg (at Owere), 5.57±2.34 (at Ekerin) to 20.40±4.52 Bq/kg (at Sokori) and 5.04±2.24 Bq/kg (at mile 12-Maidan) to 23.10±4.81 Bq/kg (at Sokori) respectively. The overall calculated mean of the total indoor absorbed dose rates was 64.46±9.16 nGy/h with corresponding annual indoor effective dose of 0.32±0.05 mSv/y. Radium equivalent activity (Raeq), external hazard index (Hex), internal hazard index (Hin) and representative gamma index (Iγr) were calculated in order to assess the radiation hazards associated with the use of these sediments in the construction of dwellings. The overall estimated values for the radium equivalent activity, external hazard index, internal hazard index and the representative gamma index were 67.96±10.74 Bq/kg, 0.18±0.03, 0.22±0.05 and 0.54±0.08, respectively. These values obtained for the river sediments were less than the recommended safe and criterion limits by UNSCEAR and also, they compared well with the values from other countries of normal radiation areas. It suffices to say therefore that sediments from Ogun river are safe and can be used for construction of buildings without undue radiological health concerns. Results of the study could serve as an important baseline radiometric data for future epidemiological studies and monitoring initiatives in the study area.  相似文献

Summary Activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides, i.e., 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, were measured in sand samples of north western areas of Pakistan using gamma-spectrometry. The measured ranges of activity concentrations for 226Ra, 232 Th and 40K were 36.9-51.9, 52.5-67.6 and 680-784 Bq . kg-1, respectively. Associated external dose was calculated using Monte Carlo simulation technique. A theoretical model to determine the gamma dose rate at 1 m height from the sand was employed for calculation the mass attenuation coefficient and self absorption in sand slab for the gamma-energies of these radionuclides and their progeny. The weighted average values of the measured gamma dose rates were 3.3, 4.5 and 12.4 nGyh-1 for 226Ra, 232 Th and 40K, respectively, with effective dose of 0.022±0.004 mSv . y-1. Monte Carlo simulation shows that the sand slabs having more than 15 cm effective thickness contribute very little to the external gamma dose rate. The values of the external dose rate and annual effective dose were found to be much lower than the world average as well as from other countries of the world.  相似文献

This study is part of an effort to assess the level of background radiation for Erzincan Province of eastern Turkey. Radionuclide activity concentrations in soil samples were measured through gamma-ray spectrometry and the average activities were determined as 8.93, 11.39, 281.94, and 9.52 Bq/kg for the radionuclides 238U, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs, respectively. The average annual effective dose from these natural radioactivity sources (238U series, 232Th series and 40K,) was calculated to be 27.9 μSv. Radioactivity levels in drinking and potable water samples were studied using a multi-channel low level proportional counter. The average gross alpha activity concentration was found to be 0.0477 Bq/L (min. 0.007 Bq/L; max. 0.421 Bq/L) and the average gross beta activity was measured as 0.104 Bq/L (min. 0.008 Bq/L; max. 1.806 Bq/L). These values lead to an average annual effective dose of 9.75 μSv from the alpha emitters and 56.34 μSv from the beta emitting radionuclides in water. The radioactivity levels in the water samples investigated were found to comply with the reference levels recommended by WHO and the regulations set forth by the Turkish Health Ministry.  相似文献

Naturally occurring radioactive materials were determined in surface sediments from the marine environment near the shore of Vizag in the South eastern part of India using gamma spectrometry technique. The mean activity concentration was found to be 36 ± 11, 34 ± 15, 75 ± 38 and 782 ± 223 Bq/kg and ranged from 19 to 48 Bq/kg, 11 to 57 Bq/kg, 31 to 145 Bq/kg and 363 to 1,024 Bq/kg for 238U, 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, respectively. The mean radium equivalent activity, external hazard index, air absorbed gamma dose rate and annual effective dose equivalent are 203 ± 62 Bq/kg, 0.6 ± 0.2, 94 ± 27 nGy/h and 0.12 ± 0.03 mSv/year respectively. This data will serve as the baseline level for naturally occurring radionuclides in the study area and will be useful for tracking and assessing any pollution inventory in the environment of this region.  相似文献

Soil samples were collected from different localities of districts Jhelum, Chakwal, Rawalpindi and Attock, Punjab Province, Pakistan with an aim to measure naturally occurring radionuclides, namely 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and fallout 137Cs radionuclide using a P-type coaxial high purity germanium (HPGe) γ-ray spectrometer. Measured specific activities of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in these soil samples ranged from 26.02 ± 7.11 to 93.54 ± 8.13 Bq kg−1, 29.34 ± 2.58 to 114.41 ± 2.80 Bq kg−1 and 348.15 ± 3.20 to 752.98 ± 4.20 Bq kg−1, respectively. Activity due to 137Cs was observed in some locations which ranged from 0.4 ± 0.2 to 7.8 ± 0.3 Bq kg−1. From the measured activity concentrations, radium equivalent activity concentrations were determined followed by calculations of mean absorbed dose rate and mean annual effective dose for the inhabitants of the studied area. The mean radium equivalent activity, internal and external hazard indices values came out to be 179.26 ± 11.93 Bq kg−1, 0.64 ± 0.05 and 0.48 ± 0.03, respectively. Indoors and outdoor average annual effective dose values were found to be 0.42 ± 0.03 and 0.10 ± 0.01 mSv, respectively. Present data have been compared with the published data for other parts of the world and found to be safe for public and environment.  相似文献

The present work aims to measure and estimate radioactivity and hazardous radiation indices of the soil. Soil samples were collected from various locations in the Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh, India. The measurement of specific activity of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K radionuclides is carried out with the help of HP-Ge based gamma spectrometer system. Activity concentration of radionuclides in the samples 226Ra, 232Th and 40K ranged from 20 ± 2 to 91 ± 2 Bq.kg-1, 45 ± 3 to 365 ± 3 Bq.kg-1, and 400 ± 9 to 607 ± 8 Bq.kg-1, and the respective mean values are 53.36 Bq.kg-1, 203.74 Bq.kg-1 and 479.19 Bq.kg-1. The measured mean value of the absorbed dose rate is 171.41 nGy.h-1, which was beyond the worldwide mean outdoor value of 60 nGy.h-1. Thus, the annual effective dose estimated from the above value is 1.04 mSv.y-1. The correlation was done among the measured 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K activity concentrations. The estimated radium equivalent dose is 381.60Bq.kg-1. The estimated health hazard index and annual effective dose rates of dwellers of Visakhapatnam were studied and compared to Indian average values. The study will help to generate the baseline data for assessing hazard indices to the public and geological mapping of natural radiation in India.  相似文献
