Biharmonic maps between surfaces are studied in this paper. We compute the bitension field of a map between surfaces with conformal metrics in complex coordinates. As applications, we show that a linear map from Euclidean plane into ${(\mathbb{R}^2, \sigma^2dwd \bar w)}$ is always biharmonic if the conformal factor σ is bianalytic; we construct a family of such σ, and we give a classification of linear biharmonic maps between 2 spheres minus a point. We also study biharmonic maps between surfaces with warped product metrics. This includes a classification of linear biharmonic maps between hyperbolic planes and some constructions of many proper biharmonic maps into a circular cone or a helicoid.  相似文献

This paper studies conformal biharmonic immersions. We first study the transformations of Jacobi operator and the bitension field under conformal change of metrics. We then obtain an invariant equation for a conformal biharmonic immersion of a surface into Euclidean 3-space. As applications, we construct a two-parameter family of non-minimal conformal biharmonic immersions of cylinder into and some examples of conformal biharmonic immersions of four-dimensional Euclidean space into sphere and hyperbolic space, thus providing many simple examples of proper biharmonic maps with rich geometric meanings. These suggest that there are abundant proper biharmonic maps in the family of conformal immersions. We also explore the relationship between biharmonicity and holomorphicity of conformal immersions of surfaces.   相似文献

Biharmonic maps are generalizations of harmonic maps. A well-known result on harmonic maps between surfaces shows that there exists no harmonic map from a torus into a sphere(whatever the metrics chosen) in the homotopy class of maps of Brower degree±1. It would be interesting to know if there exists any biharmonic map in that homotopy class of maps. The authors obtain some classifications on biharmonic maps from a torus into a sphere, where the torus is provided with a flat or a class of non-flat metrics whilst the sphere is provided with the standard metric. The results in this paper show that there exists no proper biharmonic maps of degree±1 in a large family of maps from a torus into a sphere.  相似文献

We give a new proof of regularity of biharmonic maps from four-dimensional domains into spheres, showing first that the biharmonic map system is equivalent to a set of bilinear identities in divergence form. The method of reverse Hölder inequalities is used next to prove continuity of solutions and higher integrability of their second order derivatives. As a byproduct, we also prove that a weak limit of biharmonic maps into a sphere is again biharmonic. The proof of regularity can be adapted to biharmonic maps on the Heisenberg group, and to other functionals leading to fourth order elliptic equations with critical nonlinearities in lower order derivatives.Received: 6 February 2003, Accepted: 12 March 2003, Published online: 16 May 2003Mathematics Subject Classification (2000): 35J60, 35H20Pawel Strzelecki: Current address (till September 2003): Mathematisches Institut der Universität Bonn, Beringstr. 1, 53115 Bonn, Germany (email: strzelec@math.uni-bonn.de). An important theorem about biharmonic submanifolds proved independently by Chen-Ishikawa (Kyushu J Math 52(1):167?C185, 1998) and Jiang (Chin Ann Math Ser. 8A:376?C383, 1987) states that an isometric immersion of a surface into 3-dimensional Euclidean space is biharmonic if and only if it is harmonic (i.e, minimal). In a later paper, Caddeo et?al. (Isr J Math 130:109?C123, 2002) showed that the theorem remains true if the target Euclidean space is replaced by a 3-dimensional hyperbolic space form. In this paper, we prove the dual results for Riemannian submersions, i.e., a Riemannian submersion from a 3-dimensional space form into a surface is biharmonic if and only if it is harmonic.  相似文献

The notion of biharmonic map between Riemannian manifolds is generalized to maps from Riemannian manifolds into affine manifolds. Hopf cylinders in 3-dimensional Sasakian space forms which are biharmonic with respect to Tanaka-Webster connection are classified. Dedicated to professor John C. Wood on his 60th birthday.  相似文献

In this paper we show that there exists a unique local smooth solution for the Cauchy problem of the Schr?dinger flow for maps from a compact Riemannian manifold into a complete K?hler manifold, or from a Euclidean space Rm into a compact K?hler manifold. As a consequence, we prove that Heisenberg spin system is locally well-posed in the appropriate Sobolev spaces.  相似文献

Using Hilbert’s criterion, we consider the stress-energy tensor associated to the bienergy functional. We show that it derives from a variational problem on metrics and exhibit the peculiarity of dimension four. First, we use this tensor to construct new examples of biharmonic maps, then classify maps with vanishing or parallel stress-energy tensor and Riemannian immersions whose stress-energy tensor is proportional to the metric, thus obtaining a weaker but high-dimensional version of the Hopf Theorem on compact constant mean curvature immersions. We also relate the stress-energy tensor of the inclusion of a submanifold in Euclidean space with the harmonic stress-energy tensor of its Gauss map. S. We prove a Liouville-type theorem for biharmonic maps from a complete Riemannian manifold of dimension \(n\) that has a lower bound on its Ricci curvature and positive injectivity radius into a Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is bounded from above. Under these geometric assumptions we show that if the \(L^p\)-norm of the tension field is bounded and the n-energy of the map is sufficiently small, then every biharmonic map must be harmonic, where \(2<p<n\).  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the energy of maps from an Euclidean space into a Finsler space and study the partial regularity of energy minimizing maps. We show that the -dimensional Hausdorff measure of the singular set of every energy minimizing map is 0 for some , when m=3,4. We study isometric embeddings of a Euclidean space or a Heisenberg group into a higher dimensional Heisenberg group, where both the source and target space are equipped with an arbitrary left-invariant homogeneous distance that is not necessarily sub-Riemannian. We show that if all infinite geodesics in the target are straight lines, then such an embedding must be a homogeneous homomorphism. We discuss a necessary and certain sufficient conditions for the target space to have this ‘geodesic linearity property’, and we provide various examples.  相似文献

We define and develop an interior partial regularity theory for intrinsic energy minimising fractional harmonic maps from Euclidean space into smooth compact Riemannian manifolds for fractional powers strictly between zero and one. Intrinsic fractional harmonic maps are critical points of an energy whose first variation is a Dirichlet to Neumann map for the harmonic map problem on a half-space with a Riemannian metric which can degenerate/become singular along the boundary, depending on the fractional power. Similarly to the approach used to prove regularity for stationary intrinsic semi-harmonic maps, we take advantage of the connection between fractional harmonic maps and free boundary problems for harmonic maps in order to develop a partial regularity theory for the fractional harmonic maps we consider. In particular, we prove partial regularity for locally minimising harmonic maps with (partially) free boundary data on half-spaces with the aforementioned metrics up to the boundary; fractional harmonic maps then inherit this regularity. As a by-product of our methods we shed some new light on the monotonicity of the average energy of solutions of the degenerate linear elliptic equation related to fractional harmonic functions.  相似文献

We introduce (k,l)-regular maps, which generalize two previously studied classes of maps: affinely k-regular maps and totally skew embeddings. We exhibit some explicit examples and obtain bounds on the least dimension of a Euclidean space into which a manifold can be embedded by a (k,l)-regular map. The problem can be regarded as an extension of embedding theory to embeddings with certain non-degeneracy conditions imposed, and is related to approximation theory.  相似文献

In this paper we classify linear maps preserving commutativity in both directions on the space N(F) of strictly upper triangular (n+1)×(n+1) matrices over a field F. We show that for n3 a linear map on N(F) preserves commutativity in both directions if and only if =+f where is a product of standard maps on N(F) and f is a linear map of N(F) into its center.  相似文献

We study subelliptic biharmonic maps, i.e., smooth maps ?:MN from a compact strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold M into a Riemannian manifold N which are critical points of the energy functional $E_{2,b} (\phi ) = \frac{1}{2} \int_{M} \| \tau_{b} (\phi ) \|^{2} \theta \wedge (d \theta)^{n}$ . We show that ?:MN is a subelliptic biharmonic map if and only if its vertical lift ?°π:C(M)→N to the (total space of the) canonical circle bundle $S^{1} \to C(M) \stackrel{\pi}{\longrightarrow} M$ is a biharmonic map with respect to the Fefferman metric F θ on C(M).  相似文献

We consider closed biharmonic hypersurfaces in a Euclidean sphere and prove a rigidity result under a suitable condition on the scalar curvature. Moreover, we establish an integral formula involving the position vector for biharmonic hypersurfaces in space forms. As an application of this formula, we reobtain a result concerning the closed biharmonic hypersurfaces in Euclidean spheres that lie in a closed hemisphere.  相似文献

We investigate vibrational resonance in two different nonlinear maps driven by a biharmonic force: the Bellows and the Rulkov map. These two maps possess dynamical features of particular interest for the study of these phenomena. In both maps, the resonance occurs at the low-frequency of the biharmonic signal as the amplitude of the high-frequency signal is varied. We also consider an array of unidirectionally coupled maps with the forcing signal applied to the first unit. In this case, a signal propagation with several interesting features above a critical value of the coupling strength is found, while the response amplitude of the ith unit is greater than the first one. This response evolves in a sigmoidal fashion with the system number i, meaning that at some point the amplitudes saturate. The unidirectional coupling acts as a low-pass filter for distant units. Moreover, the analysis of the mean residence time of the trajectory in a given region of the phase space unveils a multiresonance mechanism in the coupled map system. These results point at the relevance of the discrete-time models for the study of resonance phenomena, since analyses and simulations are much easier than for continuous-time models.  相似文献

The paper is devoted to an affine interpretation of Bäcklundmaps (Bäcklund transformations are a particular case of Bäcklund maps) for second order differential equations with unknown function of two arguments. Note that up to now there are no papers where Bäcklund transformations are interpreted as transformations of surfaces in a space other than Euclidean space. In this paper, we restrict our considerations to the case of so-called Bäcklund maps of class 1. The solutions of a differential equation are represented as surfaces of an affine space with induced connection determining a representation of zero curvature. We show that, in the case when a second order partial differential equation admits a Bäcklund map of class 1, for each solution of the equation there is a congruence of straight lines in an affine space formed by the tangents to the affine image of the solution. This congruence is an affine analog of a parabolic congruence in Euclidean space. The Bäcklund map can be interpreted as a transformation of surfaces of an affine space under which the affine image of a solution of the differential equation is mapped into a particular boundary surface of the congruence.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the Gauss maps of a Ricci-mean curvature flow. A Ricci-mean curvature flow is a coupled equation of a mean curvature flow and a Ricci flow on the ambient manifold. Ruh and Vilms (Trans Am Math Soc 149: 569–573, 1970) proved that the Gauss map of a minimal submanifold in a Euclidean space is a harmonic map, and Wang (Math Res Lett 10(2–3):287–299, 2003) extended this result to a mean curvature flow in a Euclidean space by proving its Gauss maps satisfy the harmonic map heat flow equation. In this paper, we deduce the evolution equation for the Gauss maps of a Ricci-mean curvature flow, and as a direct corollary we prove that the Gauss maps of a Ricci-mean curvature flow satisfy the vertically harmonic map heat flow equation when the codimension of submanifolds is 1.  相似文献
