We show in this paper that the computation of the distribution of the sojourn time of an arbitrary customer in a M/M/1 with the processor sharing discipline (abbreviated to M/M/1 PS queue) can be formulated as a spectral problem for a self-adjoint operator. This approach allows us to improve the existing results for this queue in two directions. First, the orthogonal structure underlying the M/M/1 PS queue is revealed. Second, an integral representation of the distribution of the sojourn time of a customer entering the system while there are n customers in service is obtained.  相似文献

We study an M/G/1 processor sharing queue with multiple vacations. The server only takes a vacation when the system has become empty. If he finds the system still empty upon return, he takes another vacation, and so on. Successive vacations are identically distributed, with a general distribution. When the service requirements are exponentially distributed we determine the sojourn time distribution of an arbitrary customer. We also show how the same approach can be used to determine the sojourn time distribution in an M/M/1-PS queue of a polling model, under the following constraints: the service discipline at that queue is exhaustive service, the service discipline at each of the other queues satisfies a so-called branching property, and the arrival processes at the various queues are independent Poisson processes. For a general service requirement distribution we investigate both the vacation queue and the polling model, restricting ourselves to the mean sojourn time.  相似文献

We consider anM/G/1 queue with FCFS queue discipline. We present asymptotic expansions for tail probabilities of the stationary waiting time when the service time distribution is longtailed and we discuss an extension of our methods to theM [x]/G/1 queue with batch arrivals.  相似文献

In queueing theory, most models are based on time-homogeneous arrival processes and service time distributions. However, in communication networks arrival rates and/or the service capacity usually vary periodically in time. In order to reflect this property accurately, one needs to examine periodic rather than homogeneous queues. In the present paper, the periodic BMAP/PH/c queue is analyzed. This queue has a periodic BMAP arrival process, which is defined in this paper, and phase-type service time distributions. As a Markovian queue, it can be analysed like an (inhomogeneous) Markov jump process. The transient distribution is derived by solving the Kolmogorov forward equations. Furthermore, a stability condition in terms of arrival and service rates is proven and for the case of stability, the asymptotic distribution is given explicitly. This turns out to be a periodic family of probability distributions. It is sketched how to analyze the periodic BMAP/M t /c queue with periodically varying service rates by the same method.  相似文献

Abstract

We present a transform-free distribution of the steady-state queue length for the GI/G/1/K queueing system with multiple vacations under exhaustive FIFO service discipline. The method we use is a modified supplementary variable technique and the result we obtain is expressed in terms of conditional expectations of the remaining service time, the remaining interarrival time, and the remaining vacation, conditional on the queue length at the embedded points. The case K → ∞ is also considered.  相似文献

We consider a discrete-time Geo/G/1 retrial queue where the service time distribution has a finite exponential moment. We show that the tail of the queue size distribution is asymptotically geometric. Remarkably, the result is inconsistent with the corresponding result in the continuous-time counterpart, the M/G/1 retrial queue, where the tail of the queue size distribution is asymptotically given by a geometric function multiplied by a power function.  相似文献

For an M/G/1 queue with the objective of minimizing the mean number of jobs in the system, the Gittins index rule is known to be optimal among the set of non-anticipating policies. We develop properties of the Gittins index. For a single-class queue it is known that when the service time distribution is of type Decreasing Hazard Rate (New Better than Used in Expectation), the Foreground–Background (First-Come-First-Served) discipline is optimal. By utilizing the Gittins index approach, we show that in fact, Foreground–Background and First-Come-First-Served are optimal if and only if the service time distribution is of type Decreasing Hazard Rate and New Better than Used in Expectation, respectively. For the multi-class case, where jobs of different classes have different service distributions, we obtain new results that characterize the optimal policy under various assumptions on the service time distributions. We also investigate distributions whose hazard rate and mean residual lifetime are not monotonic.  相似文献

This paper deals with the steady-state behaviour of an M/G/1 queue with an additional second phase of optional service subject to breakdowns occurring randomly at any instant while serving the customers and delayed repair. This model generalizes both the classical M/G/1 queue subject to random breakdown and delayed repair as well as M/G/1 queue with second optional service and server breakdowns. For this model, we first derive the joint distributions of state of the server and queue size, which is one of chief objectives of the paper. Secondly, we derive the probability generating function of the stationary queue size distribution at a departure epoch as a classical generalization of Pollaczek–Khinchin formula. Next, we derive Laplace Stieltjes transform of busy period distribution and waiting time distribution. Finally, we obtain some important performance measures and reliability indices of this model.  相似文献

We consider an M/G/1 queue with symmetric service discipline. The class of symmetric service disciplines contains, in particular, the preemptive last-come-first-served discipline and the processor-sharing discipline. It has been conjectured in Kella et al. [1] that the marginal distribution of the queue length at any time is identical for all symmetric disciplines if the queue starts empty. In this paper we show that this conjecture is true if service requirements have an Erlang distribution. We also show by a counterexample, involving the hyperexponential distribution, that the conjecture is generally not true. AMS Subject Classifications Primary—60K25; Secondary—90B22  相似文献

We analyze the so-called shortest queue first (SQF) queueing discipline whereby a unique server addresses queues in parallel by serving at any time, the queue with the smallest workload. Considering a stationary system composed of two parallel queues and assuming Poisson arrivals and general service time distributions, we first establish the functional equations satisfied by the Laplace transforms of the workloads in each queue. We further specialize these equations to the so-called “symmetric case,” with same arrival rates and identical exponential service time distributions at each queue; we then obtain a functional equation $$\begin{aligned} M(z) = q(z) \cdot M \circ h(z) + L(z) \end{aligned}$$ for unknown function M, where given functions \(q, L\) , and \(h\) are related to one branch of a cubic polynomial equation. We study the analyticity domain of function M and express it by a series expansion involving all iterates of function \(h\) . This allows us to determine empty queue probabilities along with the tail of the workload distribution in each queue. This tail appears to be identical to that of the head-of-line preemptive priority system, which is the key feature desired for the SQF discipline.  相似文献

We consider a discrete-time Geo/G/1 retrial queue in which the retrial time has a general distribution and the server, after each service completion, begins a process of search in order to find the following customer to be served. We study the Markov chain underlying the considered queueing system and its ergodicity condition. We find the generating function of the number of customers in the orbit and in the system. We derive the stochastic decomposition law and as an application we give bounds for the proximity between the steady-state distributions for our queueing system and its corresponding standard system. Also, we develop recursive formulae for calculating the steady-state distribution of the orbit and system sizes. Besides, we prove that the M/G/1 retrial queue with general retrial times can be approximated by our corresponding discrete-time system. Finally, we give numerical examples to illustrate the effect of the parameters on several performance characteristics.  相似文献

We consider the single server queue with service in random order. For a large class of heavy-tailed service time distributions, we determine the asymptotic behavior of the waiting time distribution. For the special case of Poisson arrivals and regularly varying service time distribution with index ?ν, it is shown that the waiting time distribution is also regularly varying, with index 1?ν, and the pre-factor is determined explicitly. Another contribution of the paper is the heavy-traffic analysis of the waiting time distribution in the M/G/1 case. We consider not only the case of finite service time variance, but also the case of regularly varying service time distribution with infinite variance.  相似文献

In this paper, the asymptotic behaviour of the distribution tail of the stationary waiting time W in the GI/GI/2 FCFS queue is studied. Under subexponential-type assumptions on the service time distribution, bounds and sharp asymptotics are given for the probability P{W > x}. We also get asymptotics for the distribution tail of a stationary two-dimensional workload vector and of a stationary queue length. These asymptotics depend heavily on the traffic load. Multilevel processor-sharing (MLPS) disciplines were originally introduced by Kleinrock (in computer applications 1976) but they were forgotten for years. However, due to an application related to the service differentiation between short and long TCP flows in the Internet, they have recently gained new interest. In this paper we show that, if the service time distribution belongs to class IMRL, the mean delay in the M/G/1 queue is reduced when replacing the PS discipline with any MLPS discipline for which the internal disciplines belong to {FB, PS}. This is a generalization of our earlier result where we restricted ourselves to the service time distribution class DHR, which is a subset of class IMRL.  相似文献

We consider finite buffer single server GI/M/1 queue with exhaustive service discipline and multiple working vacations. Service times during a service period, service times during a vacation period and vacation times are exponentially distributed random variables. System size distributions at pre-arrival and arbitrary epoch with some important performance measures such as, probability of blocking, mean waiting time in the system etc. have been obtained. The model has potential application in the area of communication network, computer systems etc. where a single channel is allotted for more than one source.  相似文献

We analyse an M/G/1 queueing model with gated random order of service. In this service discipline there are a waiting room, in which arriving customers are collected, and a service queue. Each time the service queue becomes empty, all customers in the waiting room are put instantaneously and in random order into the service queue. The service times of customers are generally distributed with finite mean. We derive various bivariate steady-state probabilities and the bivariate Laplace–Stieltjes transform (LST) of the joint distribution of the sojourn times in the waiting room and the service queue. The derivation follows the line of reasoning of Avi-Itzhak and Halfin [4]. As a by-product, we obtain the joint sojourn times LST for several other gated service disciplines.  相似文献

We consider the M/M/c retrial queues with multiclass of customers. We show that the stationary joint distribution for the number of customers in service facility and orbit converges to those of the ordinary M/M/c with discriminatory random order service (DROS) policy as retrial rate tends to infinity. Approximation formulae for the distributions of the number of customers in service facility, the mean number of customers in orbit and the sojourn time distribution of a customer are presented. The approximations are compared with exact and simulation results.  相似文献

We give an analytical formula for the steady-state distribution of queue-wait in the M/G/1 queue, where the service time for each customer is a positive integer multiple of a constant D > 0. We call this an M/{iD}/1 queue. We give numerical algorithms to calculate the distribution. In addition, in the case that the service distribution is sparse, we give revised algorithms that can compute the distribution more quickly.AMS subject classification: 60K25, 90B22  相似文献
