A theory of the optical surface two-photon small-amplitude breather in a multilayer system of the isotropic and anisotropic left-hand metamaterials, when there are a graphene monolayer (graphene-like twodimensional material) and a transition layer with impurity optical atoms (semiconductor quantum dots), is constructed. It is shown that the system of constitutive equations for two-photon transitions and wave equation for a surface plasmon–polariton TM mode are reduced to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with damping. Explicit analytical expressions for a surface two-photon small-amplitude self-induced transparency breather (0π-pulse) are obtained. It is shown that the optical conductivity of graphene leads to the exponential damping of intensity of a surface two-photon nonlinear wave during the propagation. One- and two-photon small-amplitude breathers in graphene are compared, and it is shown that differences between their parameters are substantial.  相似文献

A theory of an optical vector soliton of self-induced transparency in an ensemble of semiconductor quantum dots is considered. By using the perturbative reduction method, the system of the Maxwell–Liouville equations is reduced to the two-component coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. It is shown that a distribution of transition dipole moments of the quantum dots and phase modulation changes significantly the pulse parameters. The shape of the optical two-component vector soliton with the sum and difference of the frequencies in the region of the carrier frequency is presented. The vector soliton can be reduced to the breather solution of self-induced transparency with a different profile. Explicit analytical expressions in the presence of single-excitonic and biexcitonic transitions for the optical vector soliton are obtained with realistic parameters which can be reached in current experiments.  相似文献

A theory of self-induced transparency for a TM-mode propagating in a planar semiconductor waveguide sandwiched between two dielectric media is developed. A transition layer between the waveguide and one of the connected media is described using a model of a two-dimensional sheet of quantum dots. Explicit analytical expressions for the optical soliton in the presence of single-excitonic and biexcitonic transitions are obtained with realistic parameters which can be reached in current experiments.  相似文献

We present a comparison of quantum and “semiclassical” trajectories of coherent states that correspond to classical breather solutions of finite discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) lattices. The main goal is to explain earlier numerical observations of recurrent return to the vicinity of initial coherent states corresponding to stable breathers that are also spatially localized. This effect can be considered as a quantum manifestation of classical spatial localization. We show that these phenomena are encoded in a simple expression for the distance between the quantum and semiclassical states that involves the basic frequencies of the classical and quantum systems, as well as the breather amplitude and quantum spectral decomposition of the system. A corollary is that recurrence phenomena are robust under perturbation of the initial conditions for stable breathers.  相似文献

We restrict our attention to the discrete two-dimensional monatomic β-FPU lattice. We look for two- dimensional breather lattice solutions and two-dimensional compact-like discrete breathers by using trying method and analyze their stability by using Aubry's linearly stable theory. We obtain the conditions of existence and stability of two-dimensional breather lattice solutions and two-dimensional compact-like discrete breathers in the discrete two- dimensional monatomic β-FPU lattice.  相似文献

Symmetric collisions of two discrete breathers in the lattice with saturable nonlinearity are investigated. The strong correlation of the collision properties and the parameters of colliding breathers (power, velocity, and phase difference), lattice parameters and position of the collision point is found. This is related to the internal structure of the colliding breathers and energy exchange with the phonon background. The type of collision changes from elastic to the inelastic (the breathers merging, multi-bounce interactions, breather creation etc.) with the increasing of the colliding breather power. Collision of high power breathers always results in the breather fusion. The elastic and inelastic collisions are related to the periodic and quasi-periodic colliding breathers, respectively.  相似文献

In this paper we study the existence and stability of two-dimensional discrete gap breathers in a two-dimensional diatomic face-centered square lattice consisting of alternating light and heavy atoms, with on-site potential and coupling potential. This study is focused on two-dimensional breathers with their frequency in the gap that separates the acoustic and optical bands of the phonon spectrum. We demonstrate the possibility of the existence of two-dimensional gap breathers by using a numerical method. Six types of two-dimensional gap breathers are obtained, i.e., symmetric, mirror-symmetric and asymmetric, whether the center of the breather is on a light or a heavy atom. The difference between one-dimensional discrete gap breathers and two-dimensional discrete gap breathers is also discussed. We use Aubry's theory to analyze the stability of discrete gap breathers in the two-dimensional diatomic face-centered square lattice.  相似文献

We study the collisions of moving breathers with the same frequency, traveling with opposite directions within a Klein-Gordon chain of oscillators. Two types of collisions have been analyzed: symmetric and non-symmetric, head-on collisions. For low enough frequency the outcome is strongly dependent of the dynamical states of the two colliding breathers just before the collision. For symmetric collisions, several results can be observed: breather generation, with the formation of a trapped breather and two new moving breathers; breather reflection; generation of two new moving breathers; and breather fusion bringing about a trapped breather. For non-symmetric collisions some possible results are: breather generation, with the formation of three new moving breathers; breather fusion, originating a new moving breather; breather trapping with breather reflection; generation of two new moving breathers; and two new moving breathers traveling as a bound state. Breather annihilation has never been observed.  相似文献

We investigate the collisions of moving breathers, with the same frequency, in three different Klein-Gordon chains of oscillators. The on-site potentials are: the asymmetric and soft Morse potential, the symmetric and soft sine-Gordon potential and the symmetric and hard φ4 potential. The simulation of a collision begins generating two identical moving breathers traveling with opposite velocities, they are obtained after perturbing two identical stationary breathers which centers are separated by a fixed number of particles. If this number is odd we obtain an on-site collision, but if this number is even we obtain an inter-site collision. Apart from this distinction, we have considered symmetric collisions, if the colliding moving breathers are vibrating in phase, and anti-symmetric collisions, if the colliding moving breathers are vibrating in anti-phase. The simulations show that the collision properties of the three chains are different. The main observed phenomena are: breather generation with trapping, with the appearance of two new moving breathers with opposite velocities, and a stationary breather trapped at the collision region; breather generation without trapping, with the appearance of new moving breathers with opposite velocities; breather trapping at the collision region, without the appearance of new moving breathers; and breather reflection. For each Klein-Gordon chain, the collision outcomes depend on the lattice parameters, the frequency of the perturbed stationary breathers, the internal structure of the moving breathers and the number of particles that initially separates the stationary breathers when they are perturbed.  相似文献

In the dissipative, driven standard Frenkel-Kontorova model propagating breathers exist as attractors of the dynamics. In collisions, these excitations interact through the phonons they emit. A possible result of a two-breather collision is a bound state of two breathers. After looking at phonons and breather collisions, we present phenomenological results on breather bound states obtained from lattice dynamics simulations. In particular, we find that bound states can be characterised by the distance between the two breathers they comprise and their propagation velocity. Contrary to the single breather case, several values of the propagation velocity are easily accessible to bound states at fixed model parameters. The results are interpreted on the basis of the observed phonon spectra. The latter can easily be explained as Doppler-shifted combination frequencies of breather harmonics and a discreteness-induced perturbation frequency.Received: 18 December 2003, Published online: 15 March 2004PACS: 63.20.Ry Anharmonic lattice modes - 63.20.Pw Localized modes  相似文献

We study the existence of two-dimensional discrete breathers in a two-dimensional face-centred square lattice consisting of alternating light and heavy atoms, with nearest-neighbour coupling containing quartic soft or hardnonlinearity. This study is focused on two-dimensional breathers with frequency in the gap that separates the acoustic and optical bands of the phonon spectrum. We demonstrate the possibility of existence of two-dimensional gap breathers by using the numerical method, the local anharmonicity approximation and the rotating wave approximation. We obtain six types of two-dimensional gap breathers, i.e., symmetric, mirror-symmetric and asymmetric, no matter whether the centre of the breather is on a light or a heavy atom.  相似文献

Nonlinear classical Hamiltonian lattices exhibit generic solutions in the form of discrete breathers. These solutions are time-periodic and (typically exponentially) localized in space. The lattices exhibit discrete translational symmetry. Discrete breathers are not confined to certain lattice dimensions. Necessary ingredients for their occurrence are the existence of upper bounds on the phonon spectrum (of small fluctuations around the groundstate) of the system as well as the nonlinearity in the differential equations. We will present existence proofs, formulate necessary existence conditions, and discuss structural stability of discrete breathers. The following results will be also discussed: the creation of breathers through tangent bifurcation of band edge plane waves; dynamical stability; details of the spatial decay; numerical methods of obtaining breathers; interaction of breathers with phonons and electrons; movability; influence of the lattice dimension on discrete breather properties; quantum lattices — quantum breathers. Finally we will formulate a new conceptual approach capable of predicting whether discrete breathers exist for a given system or not, without actually solving for the breather. We discuss potential applications in lattice dynamics of solids (especially molecular crystals), selective bond excitations in large molecules, dynamical properties of coupled arrays of Josephson junctions, and localization of electromagnetic waves in photonic crystals with nonlinear response.  相似文献

Under considering the next-nearest-neighbor interaction, quantum breathers in one-dimensional anisotropy ferromagnetic chains are theortically studied. By introducing the Dyson-Maleev transformation for spin operators, a map to a Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin lattice into an extended Bose–Hubbard model can be established. In the case of a small number of bosons, by means of the numerical diagonalization technique, the energy spectrum of the corresponding extended Bose–Hubbard model containing two bosons is calculated. When the strength of the single-ion anisotropy is enough large, a isolated single band appears. This isolated single band corresponds to two-boson bound state, which is the simplest quantum breather state. It is shown that the introduction of the next-nearest-neighbor interaction will lead to interesting band structures. In the case of a large number of bosons, by applying the time-dependent Hartree approximation, quantum breather states for the system is constructed. In this case, the effect of the next-nearest-neighbor interaction on quantum breathers is also analyzed.  相似文献

We study the properties of breather interactions in nonlinear Kerr media with self-steepening and space-time correction and with either self-focusing or self-defocusing nonlinearity, and present a new family of exact breather solutions via the Darboux transformation with a special-designed quadratic spectral parameter. In contrast to the previous results of the nonlinear Schr?dinger equation(NLSE) hierarchy, we show that the relative phase of colliding breathers has a significant effect on the collision manifestation. In particular, only the out-of-phase interactions can generate small amplitude waves at the collision center, which are analogous to the NLSE superregular breathers. Our results will deepen our understanding of the properties of breather interactions and they will offer the possibility of experimental observations of super-regular breather dynamics in systems with self-steepening and space-time correction.  相似文献

We study the dynamics of the discrete nonlinear Schr?dinger lattice initialized such that a very long transitory period of time in which standard Boltzmann statistics is insufficient is reached. Our study of the nonlinear system locked in this non-Gibbsian state focuses on the dynamics of discrete breathers (also called intrinsic localized modes). It is found that part of the energy spontaneously condenses into several discrete breathers. Although these discrete breathers are extremely long lived, their total number is found to decrease as the evolution progresses. Even though the total number of discrete breathers decreases we report the surprising observation that the energy content in the discrete breather population increases. We interpret these observations in the perspective of discrete breather creation and annihilation and find that the death of a discrete breather cause effective energy transfer to a spatially nearby discrete breather. It is found that the concepts of a multi-frequency discrete breather and of internal modes is crucial for this process. Finally, we find that the existence of a discrete breather tends to soften the lattice in its immediate neighborhood, resulting in high amplitude thermal fluctuation close to an existing discrete breather. This in turn nucleates discrete breather creation close to a already existing discrete breather. Received 21 January 1999 and Received in final form 20 September 1999  相似文献

Based on a special transformation that we introduce, the N-soliton solution of the (2+1)-dimensional Boiti-Leon-Manna-Pempinelli equation is constructed. By applying the long wave limit and restricting certain conjugation conditions to the related solitons, some novel localized wave solutions are obtained, which contain higher-order breathers and lumps as well as their interactions. In particular, by choosing appropriate parameters involved in the N-solitons, two interaction solutions mixed by a bell-shaped soliton and one breather or by a bell-shaped soliton and one lump are constructed from the 3-soliton solution. Five solutions including two breathers, two lumps, and interaction solutions between one breather and two bell-shaped solitons, one breather and one lump, or one lump and two bell-shaped solitons are constructed from the 4-soliton solution. Five interaction solutions mixed by one breather/lump and three bell-shaped solitons, two breathers/lumps and a bell-shaped soliton, as well as mixing with one lump, one breather and a bell-shaped soliton are constructed from the 5-soliton solution. To study the behaviors that the obtained interaction solutions may have, we present some illustrative numerical simulations, which demonstrate that the choice of the parameters has a great impacts on the types of the solutions and their propagation properties. The method proposed can be effectively used to construct localized interaction solutions of many nonlinear evolution equations. The results obtained may help related experts to understand and study the interaction phenomena of nonlinear localized waves during propagations.  相似文献

In this Letter we show how nontrivial forms of spatially localized oscillations or breathers can occur in two-dimensional excitable neural media with short-range excitation and long-range inhibition. The basic dynamical mechanism involves a Hopf bifurcation of a stationary pulse solution in the presence of a spatially localized input. Such an input could arise from external stimuli or reflect changes in the excitability of local populations of neurons as a precursor for epileptiform activity. The resulting dynamical instability breaks the underlying radial symmetry of the stationary pulse, leading to the formation of a nonradially symmetric breather. The number of breathing lobes is consistent with the order of the dominant unstable Fourier mode associated with perturbations of the stationary pulse boundary.  相似文献

We study the symmetric collisions of two mobile breathers/solitons in a model for coupled wave guides with a saturable nonlinearity. The saturability allows the existence of mobile breathers with high power. Three main regimes are observed: breather fusion, breather reflection and breather creation. The last regime seems to be exclusive of systems with a saturable nonlinearity, and has been previously observed in continuous models. In some cases a “symmetry breaking” can be observed, which we show to be an numerical artifact.  相似文献
