The question of the static fatigue of reinforced plastics is considered for plane stress. Relations that predict the static fatigue are given for very simple types of loading. The conventional estimation of the fatigue strength of glass-fiber-reinforced plastics from the static strength in tension is shown to be inefficient by analysis of experimental data. It was found that a more reliable correlation is observed between their static and fatigue strengths as a result of referring –1 to *, where * is the smaller of the stresses in tension or compression, determined from the inflection points on the static deformation curves. A previously developed [4] general method of solving the nonlinear (in the statistical sense) boundary value problem of the theory of elasticity is used to determine the macroscopic moduli of elasticity of randomly reinforced plastics whose structure is simulated by a two-phase microinhomogeneous medium. The macroscopic modulus is represented in the form of a series composed of the sum of the mean value of the modulus and a sequence of corrections that take into account the central moments of the distribution of elastic constants. The limits of convergence of this series are established. The deformation and strength properties of undirectionally reinforced plastics in longitudinal shear are investigated. A law of shear deformation that takes into account the nonlinear properties of the matrix is established. Two modes of failure of the reinforced plastic are examined. Failure conditions are proposed for an orthogonally reinforced plastic in uniaxial tension at an arbitrary angle to the directions of reinforcement. The failure conditions are formulated for the case when the strength of the bond between the resin and the reinforcement is greater than the strength of the resin. Conclusions In the present study, we developed structural criteria that make it possible to predict at the component level (polymer binder, fibers) and interface level the long-term strength of laminated reinforced plastics in a plane stress state. The proposed relations make it possible to evaluate the effect of the rheological properties of the components, their volume fractions, and the geometry of the structure of the laminated packet on the long-term strength of reinforced plastics.
