Burer has shown that completely positive relaxations of nonconvex quadratic programs with nonnegative and binary variables are exact when the binary variables satisfy a so-called key assumption. Here we show that introducing binary slack variables to obtain an equivalent problem that satisfies the key assumption will not improve the semidefinite relaxation. In contrast, such slack variables will improve the doubly nonnegative relaxation, but the same improvement can be obtained in a simpler fashion by adding certain linear inequality constraints.

In this paper, we propose a generalized alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) with semi-proximal terms for solving a class of convex composite conic optimization problems, of which some are high-dimensional, to moderate accuracy. Our primary motivation is that this method, together with properly chosen semi-proximal terms, such as those generated by the recent advance of block symmetric Gauss–Seidel technique, is capable of tackling these problems. Moreover, the proposed method, which relaxes both the primal and the dual variables in a natural way with a common relaxation factor in the interval of (0, 2), has the potential of enhancing the performance of the classic ADMM. Extensive numerical experiments on various doubly non-negative semidefinite programming problems, with or without inequality constraints, are conducted. The corresponding results showed that all these multi-block problems can be successively solved, and the advantage of using the relaxation step is apparent.

We show that SDP (semidefinite programming) and SOCP (second order cone programming) relaxations provide exact optimal solutions for a class of nonconvex quadratic optimization problems. It is a generalization of the results by S. Zhang for a subclass of quadratic maximization problems that have nonnegative off-diagonal coefficient matrices of quadratic objective functions and diagonal coefficient matrices of quadratic constraint functions. A new SOCP relaxation is proposed for the class of nonconvex quadratic optimization problems by extracting valid quadratic inequalities for positive semidefinite cones. Its effectiveness to obtain optimal values is shown to be the same as the SDP relaxation theoretically. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate that the SOCP relaxation is much more efficient than the SDP relaxation.

The recent approach of solving large scale semidefinite programs with a first order method by minimizing an augmented primal-dual function is extended to doubly nonnegative programs. A key point governing the convergence of this approach are regularity properties of the underlying problem. Regularity of the augmented primal-dual function is established under the condition of uniqueness and strict complementarity. The application to the doubly nonnegative cone is motivated by the fact that the cost per iteration does not increase by adding nonnegativity constraints. Numerical experiments indicate that a two phase approach based on the augmented primal-dual function results in a stable method for solving large scale problems.

It has recently been shown (Burer, Math Program 120:479–495, 2009) that a large class of NP-hard nonconvex quadratic programs (NQPs) can be modeled as so-called completely positive programs, i.e., the minimization of a linear function over the convex cone of completely positive matrices subject to linear constraints. Such convex programs are NP-hard in general. A basic tractable relaxation is gotten by approximating the completely positive matrices with doubly nonnegative matrices, i.e., matrices which are both nonnegative and positive semidefinite, resulting in a doubly nonnegative program (DNP). Optimizing a DNP, while polynomial, is expensive in practice for interior-point methods. In this paper, we propose a practically efficient decomposition technique, which approximately solves the DNPs while simultaneously producing lower bounds on the original NQP. We illustrate the effectiveness of our approach for solving the basic relaxation of box-constrained NQPs (BoxQPs) and the quadratic assignment problem. For one quadratic assignment instance, a best-known lower bound is obtained. We also incorporate the lower bounds within a branch-and-bound scheme for solving BoxQPs and the quadratic multiple knapsack problem. In particular, to the best of our knowledge, the resulting algorithm for globally solving BoxQPs is the most efficient to date.

In this paper, we propose a new deterministic global optimization method for solving nonlinear optimal control problems in which the constraint conditions of differential equations and the performance index are expressed as polynomials of the state and control functions. The nonlinear optimal control problem is transformed into a relaxed optimal control problem with linear constraint conditions of differential equations, a linear performance index, and a matrix inequality condition with semidefinite programming relaxation. In the process of introducing the relaxed optimal control problem, we discuss the duality theory of optimal control problems, polynomial expression of the approximated value function, and sum-of-squares representation of a non-negative polynomial. By solving the relaxed optimal control problem, we can obtain the approximated global optimal solutions of the control and state functions based on the degree of relaxation. Finally, the proposed global optimization method is explained, and its efficacy is proved using an example of its application.

We show how to separate a doubly nonnegative matrix, which is not completely positive and has a triangle-free graph, from the completely positive cone. This method can be used to compute cutting planes for semidefinite relaxations of combinatorial problems. We illustrate our approach by numerical tests on the stable set problem.

We prove the following. Let G be an undirected graph. Every partially specified symmetric matrix, the graph of whose specified entries is G and each of whose fully specified submatrices is completely positive (equal to BBT for some entrywise nonnegative matrix B), may be completed to a completely positive matrix if and only if G is a block-clique graph (a chordal graph in which distinct maximal cliques overlap in at most one vertex). The same result holds for matrices that are doubly nonnegative (entrywise nonnegative and positive semidefinite).

In this paper, we consider the problem of minimizing an indefinite quadratic function subject to a single indefinite quadratic constraint. A key difficulty with this problem is its nonconvexity. Using Lagrange duality, we show that under a mild assumption, this problem can be solved by solving a linearly constrained convex univariate minimization problem. Finally, the superior efficiency of the new approach compared to the known semidefinite relaxation and a known approach from the literature is demonstrated by solving several randomly generated test problems.
