The measurements of the efficiency of the extraction of protons from the U-70 accelerator with the use of silicon crystals with bending angles of 36 and 64 mrad are reported. The data are confirmed by computer simulation. Proposals are made on the use of several crystals for the extraction of particles from the U-70 accelerator in the carbon ion acceleration mode.  相似文献

A radical increase in the efficiency of beam extraction from an accelerator is achieved with a short (7 mm long) crystal bent by a small angle (1.7 mrad) by increasing the number of times particles pass through the crystal. A particle extraction efficiency of ~20%, in agreement with the prediction of the theory, was achieved experimentally. A record high intensity of the extracted beam 1.9×1011 protons per cycle, which is four orders of magnitude higher than previous results, is obtained. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. A silicon crystal was used to channel and extract 70 GeV protons from the U-70 accelerator with an efficiency of 85.3+/-2.8%, as measured for a beam of approximately 10(12) protons directed towards crystals of approximately 2 mm length in spills of approximately 2 s duration. The experimental data follow very well the prediction of Monte Carlo simulations. This demonstration is important in devising a more efficient use of the U-70 accelerator in Protvino and provides crucial support for implementing crystal-assisted slow extraction and collimation in other machines, such as the Tevatron, RHIC, the AGS, the SNS, COSY, and the LHC.  相似文献

Volume reflection predicted in the mid-1980s by Taratin and Vorobiev has been observed for the first time in the interactions of a 70 GeV proton beam with a short bent crystal. Incident protons deviate from convex atomic planes in the bulk of the crystal as a result of coherent interaction with bent lattice around the tangency point of particle trajectory with a curved atomic plane. The deflection angle 2theta(R) was found to be (39.5+/-2.0) microrad, or (1.65+/-0.08)theta(c) in terms of the critical angle for channeling. The process has a large probability with respect to channeling and takes place in the angular range equal to the bend angle of atomic planes. It could possibly open new fields of application of crystals in high-energy particle beam optics.  相似文献

It has been shown that the use of a bent crystal with a variable curvature radius makes it possible to reduce the fraction of dechanneled particles by an order of magnitude. This effect enables the strong reduction of the particle density at the edge of a collimator or the partition of a septum upon the multi-turn extraction of a beam from a ring accelerator. In particular, the beam extraction efficiency at the U-70 synchrotron and Large Hadron Collider can be increased to 95 and 99.65%, respectively.  相似文献

The experiment on the investigation of the A(d, p)X reaction at the extracted deuteron beam created at the Serpukhov U-70 accelerator is proposed. Precise measurements of the momentum spectra of protons emitted in the (d, p) reaction at an initial deuteron momenta of 20–40 GeV/c can give unique information on the deuteron short-range structure. A manifestation of contribution of nonnucleonic degrees of freedom in the deuteron is entirely possible over this energy range. The text was submitted by the authors in English.  相似文献

I apply FDR—a recently introduced four-dimensional approach to quantum field theories (QFTs)—to the computation of the NLO QCD corrections to $H \rightarrow gg$ in the large top mass limit. The calculation involves all key ingredients of QCD—namely ultraviolet, infrared, and collinear divergences, besides $\alpha _S$ renormalization—and paves the way for successful use of FDR in massless one-loop QFT computations. I show in detail how the correct result emerges in FDR, and discuss the translation rules to dimensional regularization.  相似文献

The volume reflection phenomenon was detected while investigating 400 GeV proton interactions with bent silicon crystals in the external beam H8 of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Such a process was observed for a wide interval of crystal orientations relative to the beam axis, and its efficiency exceeds 95%, thereby surpassing any previously observed value. These observations suggest new perspectives for the manipulation of high-energy beams, e.g., for collimation and extraction in new-generation hadron colliders, such as the CERN Large Hadron Collider.  相似文献

The possibilities of the extraction and collimation of a circulating beam by a new method due to the reflection of particles in crystals with axial orientation were experimentally investigated in the Fall 2010 run at the U-70 synchrotron. Such crystals have positive features, because the axial potential is five times larger than the planar potential. It has been shown that the collimation efficiency can reach 90% due to axial effects in the crystal. Losses of the circulating beam on a collimator have been reduced by several times; this makes it possible to suppress the muon jet near the steel collimator of the circulating beam.  相似文献

A considerable elastic quasi-mosaicity effect has been observed upon the diffraction of x-rays on a bent silicon single-crystal plate. It has been shown that the effect depends on the choice of reflecting crystallographic planes and the orientation of the plate cut. The effect can be applied to improve the characteristics of silicon single-crystal monochromators of electromagnetic radiation and silicon single-crystal deflectors of charged-particle beams.  相似文献

An apparatus for visualizing the energy release region in a water phantom is developed and tested on the proton beam of the radiotherapeutic accelerator. The shape and sizes of the emission region during pulsed irradiation of the phantom with the proton beam is experimentally determined in the form of Bragg curves. New experiments on crystal assisted collimation have been carried out at the CERN SPS with stored beams of 120 GeV/c protons and Pb ions. Bent silicon crystals of 2 mm long with about 170 μrad bend angle and a small residual torsion were used as primary collimators. In channeling conditions, the beam loss rate induced by inelastic interactions of particles with the crystal nuclei is minimal. The loss reduction was about 6 for protons and about 3 for Pb ions. Lower reduction value for Pb ions can be explained by their considerably larger ionization losses in the crystal. In one of the crystals, the measured fraction of the Pb ion beam halo deflected in channeling conditions was 74%, a value very close to that for protons. The intensity of the off-momentum halo leaking out from the collimation station was measured in the first high dispersion area downstream. The particle population in the shadow of the secondary collimator-absorber was considerably smaller in channeling conditions than for amorphous orientations of the crystal. The corresponding reduction was in the range of 2-5 for both protons and Pb ions.  相似文献

The extraction of an accelerated beam from C235 cyclotron (IBA, Belgium) for proton therapy is simulated. The results of optimizing the parameters of the extraction system to increase the beam extraction efficiency are presented. Our theoretical results agree well with the experimental data. A new configuration of electrostatic deflector is proposed based on the numerical results; using this configuration essentially increases the efficiency of the cyclotron extraction system.  相似文献

We propose a method for estimating the coefficient of ion-stimulated desorption in the vacuum chamber of the U-70 proton synchrotron by measuring the pressure difference for the main components of the residual gas in the chamber with and without a beam. The solutions to the equations describing the variation of hydrogen and nitrogen pressures are considered. The order of magnitude of the ion-stimulated desorption coefficient is determined for an accelerated carbon ion beam. The critical values of the coefficient are indicated. The experimental results are confirmed using various computational methods as well as by the graphs plotted in accordance with current measurements for magnetic-discharge (ion) pumps. The possible role of argon in desorption is considered.  相似文献

New crystalline equipment—an array of bent strips and fan reflector based on thin flat plates—has been used to investigate the extraction and collimation of a circulating beam in an accelerator with an energy of 50 and 1.3 GeV. It has been shown that new equipment can efficiently control the beam in a wide energy range. An extraction and collimation efficiency of 90%, which is a record for this method, has been achieved for 50-GeV protons.  相似文献
