Systematic studies have been made concerning the effects of gamma dose on the track registration properties of CR-39 plastics solid-state track detector (SSTD). The changes in bulk and track etch rates as well as in sensitivity due to gamma rays in the dose range of 0103kGy at different temperatures (338–353 K) are discussed on the basis of degradation and cross-linking mechanisms. The increase in bulk and track etch rates with gamma dose has been found while a rapid fall off in sensitivity at higher dose is also seen. From these measured values of bulk and track etch rates, the activation energies associated with them have also been calculated which show a decrease from unirradiated to 103kGy gamma dose.  相似文献

The polymer Lexan was irradiated to 80MeV O6+ ion beam using the 15UD pelletron at Inter University Accelerator Centre, New Delhi. The ion fluence ranging from 1011 to 3 × 1012 ions/cm2 has been used to study the dose effects of irradiation on Lexan. By using the etching technique, it is observed that the bulk etch rate of the sample increases with increasing the ion influence, while the activation energy associated with it show a decreasing trend which can be explained on the basis of polymer degradation.   相似文献

The etching conditions of an indigenously prepared thin film of pentaerythritol tetrakis(allyl carbonate) (PETAC) were standardised for the use as a nuclear track detector. The optimum etching times in 6?N NaOH at 70°C for the appearance of fission and alpha tracks recorded in this detector from a 252Cf solid source were found to be 30 min and 1.50?h, respectively. The experimentally determined values for the bulk and track-etch rates for this detector in 6?N NaOH at 70°C were found to be 1.7?±?0.1 and 88.4?±?10.7?µm/h, respectively. From these results, the important track etching properties such as the critical angle of etching, the sensitivity and the fission track registration efficiency were calculated and compared with the commercially available detectors. The activation energy value for bulk etching calculated by applying Arrhenius equation to the bulk etch rates of the detector determined at different etching temperatures was found to be 0.86?±?0.02?eV. This compares very well with the value of about 1.0?eV reported for most commonly used track detectors. The effects of gamma irradiation on this new detector in the dose range of 200–1000?kGy have also been studied using bulk etch rate technique. The activation energy values for bulk etching calculated from bulk etch rates measurements at different temperatures were found to decrease with the increase in gamma dose indicating scission of the detector due to gamma irradiation. The optical band gap of this detector was also determined using UV–visible spectrometry and the value was found to be 4.37?±?0.05?eV.  相似文献

An experimental calibration of two common nuclear track detectors, CR-39 and Lexan, for gamma and electrons radiation, was performed using various irradiation facilities. The dose response was obtained as a function of two parameters, the bulk etch rate and the UV absorbance for a wide dose range from 10 to 1000 kGy. The bulk etch rate sensitivity, for gamma and electrons, in CR-39 detector is higher than for Lexan detector. Lexan has a well-defined UV absorbance spectrum, but presents saturation for doses higher than 500 kGy, the same saturation characteristic is observed for the corresponding bulk etch rate response. For electron and gamma radiation, CR-39 shows a good response for doses from 10 kGy up to 1000 kGy, where data fit well an exponential curve for electrons and a lineal curve for gamma radiation.  相似文献

Samples of Lexan and Makrofol-E polycarbonate plastic track detectors were exposed to 1·1 MeV/N 54 132 Xe-ions to investigate the thermal track fading properties of these plastics. The experimental results show that there is no effect of annealing on the bulk etch rate while the track etch rate decreases with annealing. The track diameter decreases with increase in annealing time and temperature. It is also observed that the track density is reduced as a result of annealing. The experiments reveal that the track lengths are, in general, decreased by the application of heat and that the oblique tracks are less stable than the vertical tracks. The decrease in diameter of 54 132 Xe-ion tracks in Makrofol-E due to heat treatment is faster than that of 54 132 Xe-ion tracks in Lexan.  相似文献

The effect of post exposure annealing on the track registeration characteristics of CR-39 (Pershore) Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors has been studied. The changes introduced in the bulk etch rates, track diameter, and the track density have been observed. The results indicate that the bulk etch rate of the detectors and the size of the tracks are considerably changed due to annealing. Variations in the track density are, however, not serious in the presently studied temperature range.  相似文献

In the present work a comparative study of track registration response of 40Ar ions in different types of Makrofol polycarbonates viz. Makrofol-KG, KL & N have been done. The etched track parameters viz. bulk etch rate, track etch rate, etch rate ratio, cone angle and etching efficiency were calculated. The variation of etching rates with temperature were found to be exponential and follow the Arrhenius equation. The values of activation energy for bulk and track etching were also calculated. Maximum etchable track length/range were also obtained and compared with the theoretical values obtained from computer program RANGE. From the results it is found that the polycarbonates having same chemical composition manufactured by different chemical processes have slightly different behavior.  相似文献

An attempt has been made to explore the possibility of using solid state nuclear track detectors for the estimation of gamma and neutron doses based on the use of changes in activation energy of degradation of these detectors, due to irradiation (gamma-neutron), as a means of dosimetry. Thermogravimetry (TG) has been applied as a tool for these studies carried out on Lexan and CR-39 track detectors. A linear relationship observed between the decrease in activation energy and the dose (gamma-neutron) received by the detectors suggests the possibility of the use of these detectors as gamma and neutron dosimeters.   相似文献

Photon induced modifications in Triafol-TN and Triafol-BN polymers have been studied in the dose range of 101–106 Gy at room temperature using a 60Co source. To monitor the chemical and structural changes induced by gamma rays, UV, IR, and ESR studies were carried out. Thermal studies were also conducted for understanding the effects of gamma irradiations on these polymers. Variation of track etching characteristics and activation energy for bulk etching have been studied at different gamma rays doses. The experimental results are presented and discussed.  相似文献

The bulk etch rate for two types of CR-39 detector was measured as a function of temperature and the activation energies of bulk etching was determined. Experimental values of track etch rate were derived directly from the function of the succesive measured track length vrs. etching time for 209Bi, 129Xe and 20Ne ions.

The maximum etchable length of 13 MeV/u 209Bi and 13.04 MeV/u 129Xe ions have been measured at and below these energies. A comparison of the measured and calculated track length data is presented.  相似文献

The track etch rates of 10 20 Ne-ion in cellulose nitrate (LR-115) have been measured for different temperatures and the activation energy is determined. The experimental results show that both the track etch rate and the normalized track etch rate depend on the energy loss as well as on etching temperature. The maximum etched track length of 10 20 Ne-ion agrees with the theoretically computed range. The experimental results show that there is no sharp threshold, at least in CN(LR-115).  相似文献

The effects of Co-60 gamma-rays and about 25-MeV pulsed electrons have been investigated on CR-39 plastic nuclear track detector. The bulk etch rate was measured as a function of the absorbed dose under three different irradiation conditions; gamma-ray exposure in air at the dose rate of 6 kGy/h, that in vacuum and electron shower in air at 126 kGy/h on average. It was found that the bulk etch rate (V) increased nearly exponentially with the dose (D); V=V0exp(kD), and the characteristic parameter (k) was 35, 9 and 12 MGy−1, respectively. It is considered that a lack of oxygen in damage formation processes could occur momentarily during a short electron pulse, just similarly to the vacuum effect of reduction in track etch rates in outgassed CR-39 plastic.  相似文献

The effect of heat treatment on the latent tracks in cellulose nitrate plastic track detectors has been studied. The bulk etch rate increases with annealing temperature while the track diameters of different ions in cellulose nitrate decrease with increase in annealing time and temperature. Experimental results show that for heavier ions higher temperatures are needed for their complete erasure. The track length and track etch rate are decreased by the application of heat. Experiments reveal that annealing reduces track density. The vertical tracks are more stable than the oblique tracks and require higher temperature for their complete erasure.  相似文献

The depth dependent track etch rates of two types of CR-39, TASTRAK and BARYOTRAK, for Li-7 ions with incident energies of 4.82, 6.75 and 10.77 MeV have been evaluated from track length measurements. The pit lengths versus the etching time obtained by three different laboratories have the same trend, but did not agree completely. The differences can be attributed to an error margin of less than one decimal point in the etching temperature. Significant deviations were also present for the assessed track etch rates. Most of the deviation was attributed to the derivation step of the growth curves. A sufficient amount of data and reasonably smooth growth curves were required near the Bragg peak in order to make a precise estimation.  相似文献

The effect of infrared radiation on the etching characteristics of CR-39 plastic track recorder has been studied. CR-39, which is commonly employed in cosmic rays studies is found to be affected by IR radiations. The changes in the bulk etch rate, in the track etch rate and in etching efficiency due to infrared radiation exposure of CR-39 are discussed on the basis of scission and cross linking during infrared exposure.  相似文献

Measurements of the dependence of track etch rate on the energy-loss of different ions have been presented. In this method, 18 40 Ar, 10 22 Ne, 8 16 O and 6 12 C-ions of different energies are used as energetic heavy ions for track formation in the detectors. The bulk etch rate and track etch rate are measured for different temperatures and hence the activation energies are determined. The variation ofV =V t /V b along the trajectory of the track has been shown for different temperatures. The maximum etched track length is compared with the theoretical range as well as with the range reported earlier. The experimental results indicate the absence of a well-defined threshold in the plastics studied.  相似文献

We have found the equation of the etch pit wall in solid state nuclear track detectors, as follows:
where: x is the distance along a track from the point where the particle entered the detector; V(x) is the ratio of the track etch rate to the bulk etch rate; C is the integration constant that can be determined from particle penetration depth, and y is the normal distance from the particle trajectory to the etch pit wall. The equation is derived assuming the increasing track etch rate Vt along the particle trajectory.

The above equation can be used for the simulation of the track growth and calculating the major and the minor axis of the etch pit opening. The corresponding computer program was set up. The input parameters of this program are: alpha particle energy, incidence angle and removed layer: the output are track parameters. The results obtained by this method are compared with another approach given by Somogyi and Szalay (1973) and reasonably good agreement is found.  相似文献

Swift heavy ion irradiation produces damage in polymers in the form of latent tracks. Latent tracks can be enlarged by etching it in a suitable etchant and thus nuclear track etch membrane can be formed for gas permeation / purification in particular for hydrogen where the molecular size is very small. By applying suitable and controlled etching conditions well defined tracks can be formed for specific applications of the membranes. After etching gas permeation method is used for characterizing the tracks. In the present work polycarbonate (PC) of various thickness were irradiated with energetic ion beam at Inter University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi. Nuclear tracks were modified by etching the PC in 6N NaOH at 60 (±1) °C from both sides for different times to produce track etch membranes. At critical etch time the etched pits from both the sides meet a rapid increase in gas permeation was observed. Permeability of hydrogen and carbon dioxide has been measured in samples etched for different times. The latent tracks produced by SHI irradiation in the track etch membranes show enhancement of free volume of the polymer. Nano filters are separation devices for the mixture of gases, different ions in the solution and isotopes and isobars separations. The polymer thin films with controlled porosity finding it self as best choice. However, the permeability and selectivity of these polymer based membrane filters are very important at the nano scale separation. The Swift Heavy Ion (SHI) induced nuclear track etched polymeric films with controlled etching have been attempted and characterized as nano scale filters.   相似文献

Triafol-TN plastic detector foils have been irradiated with238U ions of energy 16.34 MeV/u and the tracks produced have been observed using the chemical etching technique. The bulk etch rate and track etch rate are determined under successive chemical etching. In our case, the validity of Arrhenius’s law is confirmed by the fact that the same value ofE a obtained for these different concentrations, within experimental errors. The results show a linear correlation between the measured track etch rate along the track and the corresponding total energy loss rate and a threshold value of ~ 5.0 MeV/(mg/cm2) for track registration was obtained. The maximum etched track length of238U-ion in triafol-TN has been compared with the theoretically computed range.  相似文献
