The stabilizing role of carboxymethyl groups on the conformal deposition of Ag NPs over cellulosic fibers was elucidated while developing a method for the deposition of silver nanoparticles (NPs) on cellulose acetate (CA), cellulose and partially carboxymethylated cellulose (CMC) electrospun fibers. CMC fibers were prepared through judicious anionization of deacetylated cellulose acetate fibers. Ag NPs were chemically reduced from silver nitrate using sodium borohydride and further stabilized using citrate. Ag NPs were directly deposited onto CA, cellulose and CMC electrospun fibers at pH conditions ranging from 2.5 to 9.0. The resulting composites of Ag/fiber were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The results revealed that the amount of Ag agglomerates and NPs deposited on CMC fibers was higher than that deposited on cellulose fibers at similar pH conditions, and that barely any Ag agglomerates or NPs were deposited on the CA fibers. These results implied that functional groups on the cellulose backbone played two important roles in the deposition of NPs as follows: (1) Hydrogen bonding was the main driving force for agglomeration of NPs when the medium pH was below 4.4, which corresponds to the pKa of carboxylic acid groups; (2) Carboxymethyl groups could replace citrate groups as stabilizers allowing the fabrication of a uniform and evenly distributed Ag NPs layer over CMC fibers at higher pH values. This report also highlights the importance of the substrate’s surface charge and that of the pH of the medium used, on the deposition of NPs. The composite of Ag NPs on CMC electrospun fibers appears to be a promising candidate for wound dressing applications due to its superior antibacterial properties originated by the uniform and even distribution of Ag NPs on the surface of the fibers and the wound healing aptness of the CMC fibers.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is known for facilitating the electrospinning of biopolymer solutions, which are otherwise not electrospinnable. The objective of this study was to improve the understanding of the positive effects of PEO on the electrospinning of whey protein isolate (WPI) solutions under different pH conditions. Alterations in protein secondary structure and polymer solution properties (viscosity, conductivity, and dynamic surface tension), as induced by pH changes, significantly affected the electrospinning behavior of WPI/PEO (10% w/w: 0.4% w/w PEO) solutions. Acidic solutions resulted in smooth fibers (707 ± 105 nm) while neutral solutions produced spheres (2.0 ± 1.0 μm) linked with ultrafine fibers (138 ± 32 nm). In comparison, alkaline solutions produced fibers (191 ± 36 nm) that were embedded with spindle‐like beads (1.0 ± 0.5 μm). 13C NMR and FTIR spectroscopies showed that the increase in random coil and α‐helix secondary structures in WPI were the main contributors to the formation of bead‐less electrospun fibers. The electrospinning‐enabling properties of PEO on aqueous WPI solutions were attributed to physical chain entanglement between the two polymers, rather than specific polymer–polymer interactions. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composites of electrospun poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) fibers and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were used as a soft template for coating with TiO2 by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Whereas the as‐deposited TiO2 layers on PEO fibers and Ag NPs were completely amorphous, the TiO2 layers were transformed into polycrystalline TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) with embedded Ag NPs after calcination. Their plasmonic effect can be controlled by varying the thickness of the dielectric Al2O3 spacer between Ag NPs and dye molecules by means of the ALD process. Electronic and spectroscopic analyses demonstrated enhanced photocurrent generation and solar‐cell performance due to the intense electromagnetic field of the dye resulting from the surface plasmon effect of the Ag NPs.  相似文献

Nonwoven chitosan (CS) nanofiber mats were successfully prepared by the electrospinning of the mixture of CS and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in acetic acid aqueous solution. The CS/PEO fiber mats were treated with glutaraldehyde aqueous solution to stabilize fibers in solution. The concentration of glutaraldehyde is important for incorporating swelling properties in the cross-linked CS/PEO fiber mats. The cross-linked CS/PEO fibers (CCS/PEO fibers) were then used as supports for palladium catalysts in the Mizoroki–Heck reaction. The results of the study demonstrated that the catalytic activities of Pd catalyst supported on CCS/PEO fiber (Pd-CCS/PEO fiber) were highly dependent on the concentration of glutaraldehyde in the cross-linking process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the Schiff bond formed between CS and glutaraldehyde could reduce the energy needed to form a chelate complex between the CCS/PEO fibers and palladium active species. This in turn could decrease the activation energy of the Mizoroki–Heck reactions which occur in the presence of the Pd-CCS/PEO fiber catalysts. The optimized Pd-CCS/PEO fiber catalyst was very efficient and stable in the Mizoroki–Heck reaction of aromatic iodides with olefins.  相似文献

By means of the electrospinning technique we have successfully synthesized cyclodextrin (CD) functionalized polyethylene oxide (PEO) nanofibers (PEO/CD) with the ultimate goal to develop functional nanowebs. Three different types of CDs; α-CD, β-CD and γ-CD are incorporated individually in electrospun PEO nanofibers. The aqueous solutions containing different amount of PEO (3%, 3.5% and 4% (w/v), with respect to solvent) and CDs (25% and 50% (w/w), with respect to PEO) are electrospun and bead-free nanofibers are obtained. The presence of the CDs in the PEO solutions is found to facilitate the electrospinning of bead-free nanofibers from the lower polymer concentrations and this behavior is attributed to the high conductivity and viscosity of the PEO/CD solutions. The presence of CDs in the electrospun PEO nanofibers is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy studies. The 2-D X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra of PEO/CD nanowebs did not show any significant diffraction peaks for CDs indicating that the CD molecules are distributed within the polymer matrix without any phase separated crystalline aggregates.

Bionanocomposites with different loadings of silver (Ag) were prepared via synthesis of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) using the wet chemical reduction method in the lamellar space layer of the organo-sepiolite/chitosan (O-SEP/CS). The prepared O-SEP/CS/Ag bionanocomposites were characterized using various analysis methods for their structure, morphology, and optical properties. The characteristic absorption bands from the UV–visible absorption spectrum confirmed the formation of AgNPs. The antibacterial activities of O-SEP/CS/Ag bionanocomposites were investigated against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria using the disc diffusion method. The results suggest that O-SEP/CS/Ag bionanocomposites can be useful in wide range of bio-medical applications because of high antibacterial activity.  相似文献

It is difficult to produce rubbery polymer nanofibers, that is, polybutadiene, by the method of electrospinning, since during electrospinning rubbery polymer fibers join and entangles due to their low Tg. For this reason, it is not easy to achieve the fiber form out of these polymers. Homogeneously electrospun carbon nanotubes (CNT)‐filled polybutadiene (PBu) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) composite elastomeric fibers exhibit distinctive physical features such as uniform fiber diameter and distribution with significant improvements in thermomechanical properties. Controlled hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity with the components allows to generate homogenous, thermally stable and stretchable bio‐composite scaffold, and fibrous antibacterial membrane scaffolds out of PBu/PEO/CNT composite. We have combined the exciting properties of PEO with high pore density with the rubber elasticity of PBu via dissolving them in a dichloromethane/ethyl acetate organic solvent, and subsequently producing electrospun woven fibers with different PBu/PEO ratios. Frequency‐dependent thermomechanical characterization via dynamic mechanical analysis reveals pronounced changes in the onset and extent of melting, as well as the storage and loss modulus values at the onset of melting, in particular when small amounts (1.25% by wt%) of CNTs are present. The characteristic bands were detected for the PBu/PEO and PBu/PEO/CNT samples by means of Raman and Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy. CNT addition increases the hydrophobicity via the increase in roughness as attained by atomic force microscopy.  相似文献

Hybrid nanofibers from chitosan or N‐carboxyethylchitosan (CECh) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared by electrospinning using HCOOH as a solvent. AgNPs were synthesized in situ in the spinning solution. HCOOH slowed down the cross‐linking of the polysaccharides with GA enabling the reactive electrospinning in the presence of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). EDX analyses showed that AgNPs are uniformly dispersed in the nanofibers. Since AgNPs hampered the cross‐linking of chitosan and CECh with GA in the hybrid fibers, the imparting of water insolubility to the fibers was achieved at a second stage using GA vapors. The surface of chitosan/PEO/AgNPs nanofibers was enriched in chitosan and 15 wt.‐% of the incorporated AgNPs were on the fiber surface as evidenced by XPS.

Triblock copolymers made up of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and polylactide (PLA) were synthesized and converted to fibers by the electrospinning process. A two‐step in situ‐synthesis in bulk was applied to extend PLA‐PEO‐PLA triblock copolymers with relatively short block length and low molecular weight in order to obtain electrospinnable materials. DL‐lactide was polymerized to the hydroxyl chain ends of PEO via the stannous octoate route. Hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) was added as chain extender in the second step, leading to poly(ether‐ester‐urethane) multiblock copolymers. The materials were electrospun from solutions in chloroform. Different concentrations and voltages were analyzed. The ether and ester blocks were varied in their block length and their effects on the fiber morphology was studied. Variations in the electrical conductivity of the chloroform solutions were investigated by adding triethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (TEBAC) in different amounts. Finally, with high quality electrospun PLA‐PEO‐PEO triblock copolymer fibers mechanical cutting was possible. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A series of multi-block copolymers, poly(L-lactide)-b-poly (?-caprolactone) (PLLA-b-PCL) were synthesized. The first step of the synthesis consisted of the transesterification between the PLLA and 1,4-Butanediol, followed by the copolymerization of PLLA-diols and PCL, using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as a coupling agent. The synthesized polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). PLLA/PCL block copolymers were electrospun into ultrafine fibers. The morphology of the electrospun fibrous scaffolds were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results showed that the morphology and diameter of the fibers were affected by the electrospinning solution concentrationan and different weight ratio of PLLA/PCL. These electrospun PLLA-b-PCL fibrous membranes exhibited good flexibility and deformability. In comparison with the electrospun PLLA membrane, the electrospun fibrous membranes of PLLA-b-PCL demonstrated an enhanced elongation with still high tensile strength and Young's modulus to be beneficial for tissue engineering scaffolds.  相似文献

Polymer fibers composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and nanoclay were fabricated by electrospinning. The morphology of the composite nanofibers was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM), which showed aligned nanoclays in the fibers. Polarized Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy revealed that the PEO chains in the composite fibers exhibit a higher degree of orientation than that in PEO nanofibers containing no nanoclay. It is believed that spatial confinement is present in the electrospun nanofibers, which results in the enforcement of the mutual restriction. The anisotropic hierarchical nanostructure may have potential applications in optics, mechanical materials, and biomedical materials for cell culture.  相似文献

Hydroxypropyl‐β‐cyclodextrin (HP‐β‐CD) is a modified β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) derivative, which is toxicologically harmless to mammals and other animals. HP‐β‐CD is electrospun from an aqueous solution by blending with a non‐toxic, biocompatible, synthetic polymer poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). Aqueous solutions containing different HP‐β‐CD/PEO blends (50:50–80:20) with variable concentrations (4 wt%–12 wt%) were used. Scanning electron microscope was used to investigate the morphology of the fibers, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of HP‐β‐CD in the fiber. Uniform nanofibers with an average diameter of 264, 244, and 236 nm were obtained from 8 wt% solution of 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30 HP‐β‐CD/PEO, respectively. The average diameter of the fiber was decreased with increasing of HP‐β‐CD/PEO ratio. However, a higher proportion of HP‐β‐CD in the spinning solution increased beads in the fibers. The polymer concentration had no significant effect on the fiber diameter. The most uniform fibers with the narrowest diameter distribution were obtained from the 8 wt% of 50:50 solution. The self‐assembly of an amphiphilic peptide molecule to form nanofibers facilitated by Ag+ ions was investigated. Ultrafine AgNPs (NPs=nanoparticles) with an average size of 1.67 nm were synthesized in situ along the fibers due to the weak reducibility of the ‐SH group on the peptide molecule. By adding NaBH4 to the peptide solution, ultrafine AgNPs and AuNPs were synthesized with an average size of 1.35 and 1.18 nm, respectively. The AuNPs, AgNPs, and AgNPs/nanofibers all exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward the reduction of 4‐nitrophenol, with turnover frequency (TOF) values of 720, 188, and 96 h?1, respectively. Three dyes were selected for catalytic degradation by the prepared nanoparticles and the nanoparticles showed selective catalysis activity toward the different dyes. It was a surprising discovery that the ultrafine AuNPs in this work had an extremely high catalytic activity toward methylene blue, with a reaction rate constant of 0.21 s?1 and a TOF value of 1899 h?1.  相似文献

In this study, a facile, efficient, and surfactant‐free method to synthesize silica nanosphere‐supported ultrafine silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (~2.5 nm) was developed, and their antibacterial effects were investigated. In the synthesis process, the hydrolysis of 3‐mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane was adopted to provide thiol groups and in situ reduce Ag+ to Ag0 for ultrafine AgNPs formation on the surface of the silica nanosphere. Electron microscopy characterization of the complex formed revealed that the ultrafine AgNPs were not agglomerated and grow without any surfactants because there were no excess electrons transported from the shell to reduce the silver ions to silver atoms. The antibacterial effects of the supported ultrafine AgNPs with the surfactant‐free surface were evaluated against the Escherichia coli even at very low dosage. After incubation with 20 μg/mL silica‐supported AgNPs up to 120 min, 99.7% of the E. coli were inactivated, according to the bacterial viability measured by flow cytometry.  相似文献

The present study describes the harnessing of revalued cow milk (denoted as waste milk) for fabricating casein fibers (CAS) with enhanced mechanical performance and antibacterial properties by the electrospinning method. For this purpose, polyethylene oxide (PEO) was employed (10 and 20 wt%) as a binder for the appropriate electrospun CAS fibers. Different amount of tannic acid (TA) was incorporated into casein/polyethylene oxide fibers (CAS/PEO) as a crosslinker agent, bringing filaments with a diameter of ca. 2 µm. The incorporation of 4 wt% of TA promotes the fibers' reticulation, forming a stable three-dimensional network. Also, the mechanical performance of CAS/PEO fibers was improved, where the tensile strength was increased from 0.91 MPa to 1.88 MPa with 4 % of TA, while the breaking elongation was increased from 93.74 % to 274.56 %. This behavior benefits the processing of fibers by electrospinning. Furthermore, the TA addition during the electrospun of CAS/PEO fibers enhances fibers' wettability properties and thermal stability induced by the crosslinker agent. Additionally, the antibacterial activity (AA) test demonstrates that CAS fibers can inhibit the growth of Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli after 0.5 h, 1.5 h, 3 h, and 24 h of contact, which is generated by the TA addition. Our results suggest that the electrospun fabrication of CAS/PEO fibers with TA as a crosslinker agent represents an innovative harnessing of waste milk to produce functional textiles with potential biological application.  相似文献

Biodegradable poly(l-lactide) (PLA) ultrafine fibers containing nanosilver particles were prepared via electrospinning. Morphology of the Ag/PLA fibers and distribution of the silver nanoparticles were characterized. The release of silver ions from the Ag/PLA fibers and their antibacterial activities were investigated. These fibers showed antibacterial activities (microorganism reduction) of 98.5% and 94.2% against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, respectively, because of the presence of the silver nanoparticles.  相似文献

Summary: Mimetics of eggshell membrane protein fibers have been obtained with an electrospinning technique based on soluble eggshell membrane protein (SEP) prepared previously. Poly(ethylene oxide), a biocompatible and water soluble polymer, is used to improve the processability of SEP. Blends of SEP/PEO aqueous solutions were electrospun. The diameters of the fibers are 0.3–20 μm depending on the concentration of the solution and the proportion of SEP/PEO. Two “cross‐linking” methods are investigated in order to improve the anti‐water property of the fibers.

Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) embedded titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanofibers were fabricated by colloidal sol process, electrospinning, and calcination technique. Calcination of the electrospun nanofibers were heat treated at 600°C for 180 minutes in air atmosphere. X-ray diffraction patterns exhibited that the anatase phase and silver coexisted in the resulted Ag NPs/TiO2 nanofibers; transmission electron microscopy demonstrated Ag NPs well spread in the porous microstructure of composite fibers. The prepared nanofibers were utilized as photocatalyst for degradation of methyl orange. The degradation rate of methyl orange dye solution containing Ag/TiO2 composite nanofibers is 99% only after irradiation for 3 hours. It is proposed that these new Ag NPs/TiO2 composite nanofibers will have potential application in water pollution treatment.   相似文献

Summary: Poly(N‐vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used in two methods to prepare polymer nanofibers containing Ag nanoparticles. The first method involved electrospinning the PVP nanofibers containing Ag nanoparticles directly from the PVP solutions containing the Ag nanoparticles. N,N‐Dimethylformamide was used as a solvent for the PVP as well as a reducing agent for the Ag+ ions in the PVP solutions. In the second method, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solutions were electrospun with 5 wt.‐% of the PVP containing Ag nanoparticles. The Ag nanoparticles were evenly distributed in the PVA nanofibers. PVP containing Ag nanoparticles could be used to introduce Ag nanoparticles to other polymer nanofibers that are miscible with PVP.
