We present a quantum network approach to real high sensitivity measurements. Thermal and quantum fluctuations due to active as well as passive elements are taken into account. The method is applied to the analysis of the capacitive accelerometer using the cold damping technique, developed for fundamental physics in space by ONERA and the ultimate limits of this instrument are discussed. It is confirmed in this quantum analysis that the cold damping technique allows one to control efficiently the test mass motion without degrading the noise level. A two-dimensional decoupling theory is developed when colored noise is included in a nonlinear dynamical system. By a functional analysis, the colored noise is transformed to an effective noise that includes the noise correlation time, the mean dynamical variable, and the original noise strength. When the two-dimensional decoupling theory is applied to single-mode and two-mode dye laser systems, the mean, variance, and effective eigenvalue of laser intensity are calculated. Excellent agreement between theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, and experimental measurements are obtained. It is seen that the increase of noise correlation time can reduce the fluctuations in the laser system. It is also shown that there is relatively large fluctuation in the phase when the laser undergoes from thermal light to coherent light when the theory is applied to a single mode dye laser. Quantum fluctuations of the signal field are shown to induce packed arrays of cavity solitons in a degenerate optical parametric oscillator above threshold in the limit of large pump finesse relative to the signal finesse. The cavity solitons in the array are formed by locked domain walls, and lead to a highly correlated quantum structure. The effect of the quantum fluctuations is non-trivial since the arrays of cavity solitons have a far less stable than other stable solutions and disappear with decreasing pump finesse. The transition from disorder to order due to quantum noise is also discussed. Received 20 September 2002 / Received in final form 28 November 2002 Published online 11 February 2003  相似文献

We model an isolated quantum computer as a two-dimensional lattice of qubits (spin halves) with fluctuations in individual qubit energies and residual short-range inter-qubit couplings. In the limit when fluctuations and couplings are small compared to the one-qubit energy spacing, the spectrum has a band structure and we study the quantum computer core (central band) with the highest density of states. Above a critical inter-qubit coupling strength, quantum chaos sets in, leading to quantum ergodicity of eigenstates in an isolated quantum computer. The onset of chaos results in the interaction induced dynamical thermalization and the occupation numbers well described by the Fermi-Dirac distribution. This thermalization destroys the noninteracting qubit structure and sets serious requirements for the quantum computer operability. We propose a quantum transmission based on bi-photons, which are doubly-entangled both in polarisation and phase. This scheme finds a natural application in quantum cryptography, where we show that an eventual eavesdropper is bound to introduce a larger error on the quantum communication than for a single entangled bi-photon communication, when he steels the same information. Using a quantum theory for an ensemble of two- or three-level atoms driven by electromagnetic fields in an optical cavity, we show that the various spins associated with the atomic ensemble can be squeezed. Two kinds of squeezing are obtained: on the one hand self-spin squeezing when the input fields are coherent ones and the atomic ensemble exhibits a large non-linearity; on the other hand squeezing transfer when one of the incoming fields is squeezed. Quantum key exchanges using weak coherent (Poissonian) single-photon sources are open to attack by a variety of eavesdropping techniques. Quantum-correlated photon sources provide a means of flagging potentially insecure multiple-photon emissions and thus extending the secure quantum key channel capacity and the secure key distribution range. We present indicative photon-counting statistics for a fully correlated Poissonian multibeam photon source in which the transmitted beam is conditioned by photon number measurements on the remaining beams with non-ideal multiphoton counters. We show that significant rejection of insecure photon pulses from a twin-beam source cannot be obtained with a detector having a realistic quantum efficiency. However quantum-correlated (quadruplet or octuplet) multiplet photon sources conditioned by high efficiency multiphoton counters could provide large improvements in the secure channel capacity and the secure distribution range of high loss systems such as those using the low earth orbit satellite links proposed for global quantum key distribution. The combined effects of the pump noise suppression and injection locking technique on the intensity noise of a diode pumped Nd:YVO4 microchip laser are theoretically and experimentally investigated. Complete cancellation of the relaxation oscillation peak is experimentally achieved. Very good agreement between experimental results and theoretical predictions of a fully quantum model describing lasers with injected signal is found. In this article we study the impact of the spin-orbit interaction on the electron quantum confinement for narrow gap semiconductor quantum dots. The model formulation includes: (1) the effective one-band Hamiltonian approximation; (2) the position- and energy-dependent quasi-particle effective mass approximation; (3) the finite hard wall confinement potential; and (4) the spin-dependent Ben Daniel-Duke boundary conditions. The Hartree-Fock approximation is also utilized for evaluating the characteristics of a two-electron quantum dot system. In our calculation, we describe the spin-orbit interaction which comes from both the spin-dependent boundary conditions and the Rashba term (for two-electron quantum dot system). It can significantly modify the electron energy spectrum for InAs semiconductor quantum dots built in the GaAs matrix. The energy state spin-splitting is strongly dependent on the dot size and reaches an experimentally measurable magnitude for relatively small dots. In addition, we have found the Coulomb interaction and the spin-splitting are suppressed in quantum dots with small height. We analyze theoretically spatial structures appearing in the far diffraction zone of the electromagnetic field emitted in the cavityless parametric down-conversion. We investigate in detail the spatial correlation functions of intensity and demonstrate the existence of strong quantum correlations between the regions of the far field symmetrical with respect to the optical axis. Our simplified model allows us to obtain analytical results for some limiting cases. We demonstrate that in the limit of small diffraction and ideal quantum efficiency of photodetection the noise reduction in the photocurrent difference between symmetrical regions in the far diffraction field becomes complete at zero frequency of photocurrent fluctuations. Since Boltzmann developed the statistical theory for macroscopic thermodynamics the question has relentlessly been put forward of how time-reversibility at microscopic level is compatible with macroscopic irreversibility. Here we show that a quantum computer can efficiently simulate a macroscopic thermodynamic process with chaotic microscopic dynamics and invert the time arrow even in presence of quantum errors. In contrast, small errors in classical computer simulation of this dynamics grow exponentially with time and rapidly destroy time-reversibility. Received 31 October 2001  相似文献

A survey on the generalizations of Heisenberg uncertainty relation and a general scheme for their entangled extensions to several states and observables is presented. The scheme is illustrated on the examples of one and two states and canonical quantum observables, and spin and quasi-spin components. Several new uncertainty relations are displayed. The pixel by pixel calibration of a scientific CCD camera allows Poissonian statistics of the spatial fluctuations of an uniform enlightening to be retrieved in the full range of the camera dynamic. The procedure works efficiently for thermal as well as for laser sources, provided that the wavelength and the coherence properties of the source are chosen in order to avoid the formation of equal thickness fringes in the chip (etaloning effect). Calibration allows also the comparison at the shot noise level of images recorded at different places on the chip. We study the properties of the spatial fluctuations in the far-field parametric fluorescence output of a type 1 degenerate traveling-wave parametric amplifier. Results of a semi-classical simulation are compared with experiments in a LBO crystal. This simulation is then used to predict amplified images of a continuous background, in a phase-sensitive as well as in a phase-insensitive configuration. Received 12 March 2001  相似文献

Several examples of photon entanglement are studied in the Q representation of quantum optics. In particular, the entangled states produced in parametric downconversion are studied in detail, and we determine the conditions for the violation of Bell's inequality. Our approach shows that photon entanglement is related to the existence of correlations between the quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field associated to different modes. We report a new quantum cryptographic system involving single sideband detection and allowing an implementation of the BB84 protocol. The transmitted bits are reliably coded by the phase of a high frequency modulating signal. The principle of operation is described in terms of both classical and quantum optics. The method has been demonstrated experimentally at 1 550 nm using compact and conventional device technology. Single photon interference has been obtained with a fringe visibility greater than 98%, indicating that the system can be used in view of quantum key distribution potentially beyond 50-km-long standard single-mode fiber. The currents and their fluctuations in two capacitively coupled single electron transistors are determined in the limit of sequential tunnelling. Our considerations are restricted to the case when the islands (dots) of the transistors are atomic-sized, which means each of them has only one single electronic level available for the tunnelling processes. The Coulomb interactions of accumulated charges on the both single electron transistors lead to the effect of the negative differential resistance. An enhancement of the current shot-noise was also found. Spectral decomposition analysis indicated the two main contributions to the shot-noise: low- and high-frequency fluctuations. It was found that the low frequency fluctuations (polarization noise) are responsible for a strong enhancement of the current noise. We analyze the quantum fluctuations of the degenerate optical parametric oscillator close to an instability for the formation of a square pattern. While strong correlations between the fluctuations of the signal modes emitted at the critical wave number and with opposite wave vector are present both below and above threshold, no features signaling the square character of the pattern forming above threshold have been identified below threshold in the spatio-temporal second-order coherence. We also explore in which regimes a reduced few mode model gives meaningful results. Received 17 September 2002 / Received in final form 11 November 2002 Published online 26 February 2003  相似文献
