We show that two C*-algebraic noncommutative tori are strongly Morita equivalent if and only if they have isomorphic ordered K 0-groups and centers, extending N. C. Phillips’s result in the case that the algebras are simple. This is also generalized to the twisted group C*-algebras of arbitrary finitely generated abelian groups. Kadison and Kastler introduced a metric on the set of all C*-algebras on a fixed Hilbert space. In this paper structural properties of C*-algebras which are close in this metric are examined. Our main result is that the property of having a positive answer to Kadison’s similarity problem transfers to close C*-algebras. In establishing this result we answer questions about closeness of commutants and tensor products when one algebra satisfies the similarity property. We also examine K-theory and traces of close C*-algebras, showing that sufficiently close algebras have isomorphic Elliott invariants when one algebra has the similarity property.  相似文献

GivenC*-algebrasA andB and an imprimitivityA-B-bimoduleX, we construct an explicit isomorphismX *:K i (A)K i (B), whereK i denotes the complexK-theory functors fori=0, 1. Our techniques do not require separability nor the existence of countable approximate identities. We thus extend to generalC*-algebras the result of Brown, Green, and Rieffel according to which, strongly Morita equivalentC*-algebras have isomorphicK-groups. The method employed includes a study of Fredholm operators on Hilbert modules. On leave from the University of São Paulo, Brazil.  相似文献

We use a Heegaard splitting of the topological 3-sphere as a guiding principle to construct a family of its noncommutative deformations. The main technical point is an identification of the universal C*-algebras defining our quantum 3-spheres with an appropriate fiber product of crossed-product C*-algebras. Then we employ this result to show that the K-groups of our family of noncommutative 3-spheres coincide with their classical counterparts. In this paper aK-theoretic classification is given of the simple real rank zeroC*-algebras that can be expressed as inductive limits of sequences of finite direct sums of matrix algebras over finite connected graphs (possibly with dimension drop). This class ofC*-algebras provides torsionK1. The special case that the graphs are intervals is due to Elliott.  相似文献

For a certain class of extensions of C*-algebras in which B and A belong to classifiable classes of C*-algebras, we show that the functor which sends to its associated six term exact sequence in K-theory and the positive cones of K0(B) and K0(A) is a classification functor. We give two independent applications addressing the classification of a class of C*-algebras arising from substitutional shift spaces on one hand and of graph algebras on the other. The former application leads to the answer of a question of Carlsen and the first named author concerning the completeness of stabilized Matsumoto algebras as an invariant of flow equivalence. The latter leads to the first classification result for nonsimple graph C*-algebras.  相似文献

Our main result is the construction of an embedding ofC(T2) into an approximately finite-dimensionalC *-algebra which induces an injection onK 0(C(T2)). The existence of this embedding implies that Cech cohomology cannot be extended to a stable, continuous homology theory forC *-algebras which admits a well-behaved Chern character. Homotopy properties ofC *-algebras are also considered. For example, we show that the second homotopy functor forC *-algebras is discontinuous. Similar embeddings are constructed for all the rational rotation algebras, with the consequence that none of the rational rotation algebras satisfies the homotopy property called semiprojectivity.  相似文献

We the study the algebraic K-theory of C *-algebras, forgetting the topology. The main results include a proof that commutative C*-algebras are K-regular in all degrees (that is, all theirN T K iand extensions of the Fischer-Prasolov Theorem comparing algebraic and topological K-theory with finite coefficients.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a general introduction to the K-theory of C *-algebras and survey of our previous papers, where the functor N 0 from the category of von Neumann algebras to the category of Abelian groups was defined. We investigate the properties of this functor (in particular, its interrelation with the functor K 0) and point out some applications of the functor N 0 in noncommutative geometry. In addition, we recall facts of theory of C *-algebras, von Neumann algebras, and Hilbert C *-modules.  相似文献

We first determine the homotopy classes of nontrivial projections in a purely infinite simpleC*-algebraA, in the associated multiplier algebraM(A) and the corona algebraM A/A in terms ofK *(A). Then we describe the generalized Fredholm indices as the group of homotopy classes of non-trivial projections ofA; consequently, we determine theK *-groups of all hereditaryC*-subalgebras of certain corona algebras. Secondly, we consider a group structure of *-isomorphism classes of hereditaryC*-subalgebras of purely infinite simpleC*-algebras. In addition, we prove that ifA is aC*-algebra of real rank zero, then each unitary ofA, in caseA it unital, each unitary ofM(A) and ofM(A)/A, in caseA is nonunital but -unital, can be factored into a product of a unitary homotopic to the identity and a unitary matrix whose entries are all partial isometries (with respect to a decomposition of the identity).Partially supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

We develop the general theory for a new functor K e on the category of C *-algebras. The extremal K-set, K e (A), of a C *-algebra A is defined by means of homotopy classes of extreme partial isometries. It contains K 1 (A) and admits a partially defined addition extending the addition in K 1 (A), so that we have an action of K 1 (A) on K e (A). We show how this functor relates to K 0 and K 1, and how it can be used as a carrier of information relating the various K-groups of ideals and quotients of A. The extremal K-set is then used to extend the classical theory of index for Fredholm and semi-Fredholm operators.  相似文献

The topological aspects of B.Bojarski's approach to Riemann–Hilbert problems are developed in terms of infinite-dimensional grassmanians and generalized to the case of transmission problems over C*-algebras. In particular, the homotopy groups of certain grassmanians related to elliptic transmission problems are expressed through K-groups of the basic algebra. Also, it is shown that the considered grassmanians are homogeneous spaces of appropriate operator groups. Several specific applications of the obtained results to singular operators are given, and further perspectives of our approach are outlined.  相似文献

It is shown that all the approximately finite dimensional C*-algebras which are not of Type I are isomorphic as Banach spaces. This generalizes the matroid case given previously by Arazy. Analogous results are obtained for various families of triangular subalgebras of AF C*-algebras. In addition the classification of various continua of Type I AF C*-algebras is discussed.  相似文献

We show that the homotopy groups of the group of quasi-unitaries inC *-algebras form a homology theory on the category of allC *-algebras which becomes topologicalK-theory when stabilized. We then show how this functorial setting, in particular the half-exactness of the involved functors, helps to calculate the homotopy groups of the group of unitaries in a series ofC *-algebras. The calculations include the case of all AbelianC *-algebras and allC *-algebras of the formAB, whereA is one of the Cuntz algebras On n=2, 3, ..., an infinite dimensional simpleAF-algebra, the stable multiplier or corona algebra of a-unitalC *-algebra, a properly infinite von Neumann algebra, or one of the projectionless simpleC *-algebras constructed by Blackadar.  相似文献

This paper studies the tracial stability of C*-algebras, which is a general property of stability of relations in a Hilbert–Schmidt-type norm defined by a trace on a C*-algebra. Precise definitions are formulated in terms of tracial ultraproducts. For nuclear C*-algebras, a characterization of matricial tracial stability in terms of approximation of tracial states by traces of finite-dimensional representations is obtained. For the nonnuclear case, new obstructions and counterexamples are constructed in terms of free entropy theory.  相似文献

We describe representation theorems for local and perfect MV-algebras in terms of ultraproducts involving the unit interval [0, 1]. Furthermore, we give a representation of local Abelian -groups with strong unit as quasi-constant functions on an ultraproduct of the reals. All the above theorems are proved to have a uniform version, depending only on the cardinality of the algebra to be embedded, as well as a definable construction in ZFC.  相似文献

We generalize the Atiyah-Segal completion theorem to C *-algebras as follows. Let A be a C *-algebra with a continuous action of the compact Lie group G. If K * G (A) is finitely generated as an R(G)-module, or under other suitable restrictions, then the I(G)-adic completion K * G (A) is isomorphic to RK *([A C(EG)]G), where RK * is representable K-theory for - C *-algebras and EG is a classifying space for G. As a corollary, we show that if and are homotopic actions of G, and if K *(C * (G,A,)) and K *(C * (G,A,)) are finitely generated, then K *(C *(G,A,))K*(C * (G,A,)). We give examples to show that this isomorphism fails without the completions. However, we prove that this isomorphism does hold without the completions if the homotopy is required to be norm continuous. This work was partially supported by an NSF Graduate Fellowship and by an NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship.  相似文献

We define united K-theory for real C*-algebras, generalizing Bousfield's topological united K-theory. United K-theory incorporates three functors – real K-theory, complex K-theory, and self-conjugate K-theory – and the natural transformations among them. The advantage of united K-theory over ordinary K-theory lies in its homological algebraic properties, which allow us to construct a Künneth-type, nonsplitting, short exact sequence whose middle term is the united K-theory of the tensor product of two real C*-algebras A and B which holds as long as the complexification of A is in the bootstrap category . Since united K-theory contains ordinary K-theory, our sequence provides a way to compute the K-theory of the tensor product of two real C*-algebras. As an application, we compute the united K-theory of the tensor product of two real Cuntz algebras. Unlike in the complex case, it turns out that the isomorphism class of the tensor product is not determined solely by the greatest common divisor of K and l. Hence, we have examples of nonisomorphic, simple, purely infinite, real C*-algebras whose complexifications are isomorphic.  相似文献
