试论军队初级指挥院校专科《高等数学》教材的编写原则

<正> 目前适合我国高等院校本科不同专业的高等数学教材比较多,它们各具特色,各有所长,比较成熟,也比较通用。适合专科的高等数学版本也比较多,其中不乏优秀者,但相对讲起来不如本科教材那样成熟通用。据了解,在军队初级指挥院校大专班中,有些选用同济大学数学教研室编《高等数学》(第二版)或其他适用于本科的高等数学教材,有些选用各种版本的专科《高等数学》教材。

Beating the System: Course Structure and Student Strategies in a Traditional Introductory Undergraduate Physics Course for Nonmajors

The purpose of this study was to describe relationships among instructor and student goals, course design, and student strategies for learning physics in a traditional introductory undergraduate physics course for nonmajors. The procedures included 16 hours ofnonparticipant observation, during which detailed field notes and photographs were taken and documents were collected. Audiotaped open-ended interviews were given to instructors and students, and all students participated in a limited survey. The data were analyzed using qualitative methods of the Chicago School. Results indicated that both differing goals of students and instructors and the structure of the course inhibited the understanding of physics and were conducive to students engaging in unexpected behaviors designed to help them successfully pass the course. The consequences of the structure of the course and subsequent student behaviors inhibited their understanding and appreciation of physics and deterred them from enrolling in further science courses. The paper includes implications for teaching introductory college physics.

A Special Topics Course in Perturbation Methods

A special topics course dealing with perturbation methods in applied mathematics which was recently taught at Stevens Institute of Technology is described. Since the course enrolment was comprised of undergraduate and graduate mathematics students as well as graduate students in engineering, an unusual course philosophy had to be developed and implemented. The approach taken to achieve this in both teaching techniques and selection of subject matter is discussed in detail. Finally, conclusions are drawn from the students’ and the instructor's experiences with the course which hopefully will be of value to those considering offering special topics courses in the future.

The Art of Course Planning: Soft O.R. in Action

This article is a case study described from two viewpoints: that of an analyst and that of a ‘decision-maker’. It describes the use of two ‘soft O.R.’ methods in helping the members of a university O.R. group to plan revisions to a postgraduate Diploma course, resulting in the implementation of an improved course. One author conducted the exercise while the other was a member of the client group. Given that case studies are usually written by the analyst alone, it is hoped that a client's eye-view will be useful as feedback for practitioners and can also introduce some of the concepts and terminology of soft O.R. to those engaged in more mathematical O.R. activities.     

Undergraduate computational science and engineering education: A SIAM Working Group Report

Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) is a rapidly growing multidisciplinary area with connections ot the sciences, engineering, mathematics and computer science. CSE is a legitimate and important academic enterprise, even if it is yet to be formally recognized by a number of institutions. The undergraduate arena is the most important segment of the educational pipeline, since it prepares teachers for the high school environment, invigorates students to pursue graduate studies in cutting edgetechnical fields, and produces a vast number of future employees for industry and the “knowledge-based” economy. Thus it is critical that CSE curricula and programs are a viable option for every undergraduate student. This presentation introduces the SIAM Working Group report on undergraduate CSE education.
