The problem of irrotational flow past a wing of finite thickness and finite span can be reduced by Green's formula to the solution of a system of Fredholm equations of the second kind on the surface of the wing [1]. The wake vortex sheet is represented by a free vortex surface. Besides panel methods (see, for example, [2]) there are also methods of approximate solution of this problem based on a preliminary discretization of the solution along the span of the wing in which the two-dimensional integral equations are reduced to a system of one-dimensional integral equations [1], for which numerical methods of solution have already been developed [3–6]. At the same time, a discretization is also realized for the wake vortex sheet along the span of the wing. In the present paper, this idea of numerical solution of the problem of irrotational flow past a wing of finite span is realized on the basis of an approximation of the unknown functions which is piecewise linear along the span. The wake vortex sheet is represented by vortex filaments [7] in the nonlinear problem. In the linear problem, the sheet is represented both by vortex filaments and by a vortex surface. The results are given of experimental investigations into the change in the structure of the secondary steady flows near a circular cylinder vibrating in a fluid at rest in the direction perpendicular to its axis in a wide range of vibration amplitudes at high Reynolds numbers. For vibration amplitudes less than the cylinder diameter, not only viscous waves but also four vortices are generated near the surface of the cylinder and four steady flows at some distance from it. During a period of the vibration, the vortices near the cylinder change their shape and position. At vibration amplitudes comparable with the cylinder diameter, the vortices become separated and form two vortex streets. The phenomenon of breaking of surface gravity waves on the sea in a coastal zone has much in common with a steady hydraulic jump. When surface waves break a vortex forms which rolls down along the leading slope of the wave, as in the case of the formation of a hydraulic jump. Up to the present time a number of theoretical flow models have been proposed for the region in which a wave front breaks. Many of these studies are discussed in [1, 2]. However, the questions of the origin and dynamics of the vortex and its effect on the flow remain open. With the object of studying these questions in greater detail, the results are given below of numerical and experimental simulation of a hydraulic jump. The need for the inclusion of end-wall boundary layers in the study of the aerodynamics of vortex chambers has been frequently mentioned in the literature. However, owing to limited experimental data [1–3] with reliable information on the wall layers, the existing computational methods for end-wall boundary layers are not well-founded. The question of which parameters determine the formation of end-wall flow remains debatable. In some studies [4, 5], the vortex chambers are conditionally divided into short and long chambers. However, there is no unique opinion on the role of end-wall flows in vortex chambers of different lengths. It has also not been established for what geometric and flow parameters the chamber could be considered long or short. In the present study, as in [1, 5–8], solution is obtained for the end-wall boundary-layer equations using integral methods, considering the boundary layer in the radial direction in the form of a submerged wall jet. Such an approach made it possible to use the laws for the development of wall jets [9], and obtain fairly simple relations for integral parameters, skin friction, mass flow in the boundary layer, and other characteristics. The papers [1–5] are devoted to an investigation of aspects of the hydrodynamic interaction of cascades of profiles in a nonlinear formulation: it is shown experimentally in [1] and theoretically in [2] that the free vortex sheet ruptures upon meeting a profile; taking account of the evolution of vortex wakes, the flows around two cascades of solid profiles of infinitesimal [3] and finite [4] density are computed; results of an experimental investigation of the dynamic reactions of the flow on two mutually moving cascades of thin profiles are presented in [5]. The paper presents the results of an experimental study of the vortex street behind a circular cylinder oscillating across a water stream at Reynolds numbers less than the critical value at which a vortex street is formed behind a stationary cylinder. The asymptotic dependence of the nondimensional vortex separation frequency (the Strouhal number) on the main relevant parameters is obtained. The flow in turbomachines is currently calculated either on the basis of a single successive solution of an axisymmetric problem (see, for example, [1-A]) and the problem of flow past cascades of blades in a layer of variable thickness [1, 5], or by solution of a quasi-three-dimensional problem [6–8], or on the basis of three-dimensional models of the motion [9–11]. In this paper, we derive equations of a three-dimensional model of the flow of an ideal incompressible fluid for an arbitrary curvilinear system of coordinates based on averaging the equations of motion in the Gromek–Lamb form in the azimuthal direction; the pulsation terms are taken into account in the equations of the quasi-three-dimensional motion. An algorithm for numerical solution of the problem is described. The results of calculations are given and compared with experimental data for flows in the blade passages of an axial pump and a rotating-blade turbine. The experimental results of studying the effect of homogeneous stratification of the fluid on the conditions of generation of a Kárman vortex street [1] developing in the wake of a cylinder in steady horizontal motion are described. In a homogeneous medium at Reynolds numbers Re >5 two symmetrical regions of vorticity of opposite sign are formed behind the cylinder and move together with the latter. As the speed of the cylinder increases, the link between the vortices and the cylinder grows weaker, the vortices are stretched out along the flow and at Re > 40 begin to separate alternately, forming a vortex street in the wake. At first, the frequency of vortex separation increases sharply with increase in Re, but then levels off. It is found that in a uniformly stratified fluid the onset of vortex separation from the moving cylinder is delayed. The dependence of the critical Reynolds number (onset of vortex separation) on the internal Froude number is obtained. The effect of stratification of the fluid on the frequency of separation of the vortices in the Kármán street is investigated. The article gives the results of experimental investigations of the creep of heat-resistant aluminum alloy AK4-1 with constant and variable loads, at a temperature of 175 °C and a duration of the tests equal to 100 h. Based on the experimental data, a verification of the theory of creep is adduced, based on the following hypotheses: 1) the change in the volume is elastic; 2) the deviator of the creep rates is proportional to the deviator of the stresses; 3) the intensities of the stresses, of the creep deformations, and their rates are connected by a relationship which does not depend on the type of the state of stress. The method of integral relations is used to calculate the basic flow parameters behind sharp and blunted cones. Similar investigations have been carried out in many papers, for example, [1–3]. In contrast to the assumptions made in other computational methods, the present paper includes the vorticity of the flow off the rear edge of the body, and the inviscid free flow is calculated by the method of characteristics with separation of the attached compressive shocks into an edge and a trailing shock. In the general case the wall ahead of the base is assumed to be heat conducting. Calculated results are given for a wide range of the parameters governing the problem. It is shown that the vorticity of the flow off the rear edge has a considerable effect on the base pressure. In order to describe the unsteady flow of a viscous fluid induced by a toroidal vorticity distribution we use the two-scale expansion method [6], By this means we obtain a vorticity distribution in the core of the thin vortex ring that is consistent with the external potential flow. The time dependence of the flow characteristics obtained confirms the experimental results for the inertial regime.
