Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) were used to examine four dithiol molecules, including 1,6-hexanedithiol, 1,9-nonanedithiol, 1,2-benzenedithiol, and 1,3-benzenedithiol, adsorbed on well-ordered Pt(111) electrodes in 0.1 M HClO(4). The open-circuit potential (OCP) of Pt(111) electrodes decreased substantially from 0.95 to 0.3 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode) upon the adsorption of dithol molecules, which indicates that these adsorbates injected electrons into the Pt electrode. For all dithiol molecules, ordered adlattices of p(2 x 2) and (square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees were formed when the dosing concentration was lower than 150 microM and the potential of Pt(111) was more negative than 0.5 V. Raising the potential of Pt(111) from 0.1 to 0.4 V or more positive values could transform p(2 x 2) to (square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees before it turned disarray. The insensitivity of the structure of dithiol adlayers with their chemical structures was explained by upright molecular orientation with the formation of one Pt-S bond per dithiol molecule. This molecular orientation was independent of the coverage of dithiol molecules, as nucleation seeds produced at the beginning of adsorption were also constructed with p(2 x 2). The triangular-shaped STM molecular resolution suggested 3-fold binding of sulfur headgroup on Pt(111). All dithiols were adsorbed so strongly on Pt(111) electrodes that switching the potential negatively to the onset of hydrogen evolution in 0.1 M HClO(4) or water reduction in 1 M KOH could not displace dithiol admolecules.  相似文献

The adsorption and desorption of HCl on Pt(111) is investigated by temperature programmed desorption, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, and low energy electron diffraction. Five peaks are identified in the desorption spectra prior to the onset of multilayer desorption. At low coverage ( < 0.25 monolayers (ML)), desorption peaks at approximately 135 and 200 K are observed and assigned to recombinative desorption of dissociated HCl. At higher coverages, desorption peaks at 70, 77, and 84 K are observed. These peaks are assigned to the desorption of molecularly adsorbed HCl. The infrared spectra are in agreement with these assignments and show that HCl deposited at 20 K is amorphous but crystallizes when heated above 60 K. Kinetic analysis of the desorption spectra reveals a strong repulsive coverage dependence for the desorption energy of the low coverage features ( < 0.25 ML). The diffraction data indicate that at low temperature the adsorbed HCl clusters into ordered islands with a (3 x 3) structure and a local coverage of 4/9 with respect to the Pt(111) substrate.  相似文献

The heat of adsorption and sticking probability of cyclohexene on Pt(111) were measured as a function of coverage using single-crystal adsorption calorimetry in the temperature range from 100 to 300 K. At 100 K, cyclohexene adsorbs as intact di-sigma bonded cyclohexene on Pt(111), and the heat of adsorption is well described by a second-order polynomial (130 - 47 theta - 1250 theta(2)) kJ/mol, yielding a standard enthalpy of formation of di-sigma bonded cyclohexene on Pt(111) at low coverages of -135 kJ/mol and a C-Pt sigma bond strength of 205 kJ/mol. At 281 K, cyclohexene dehydrogenates upon adsorption, forming adsorbed 2-cyclohexenyl (c-C6H(9,a)) and adsorbed hydrogen, and the heat of adsorption is well described by another second-order polynomial (174 - 700 theta + 761 theta(2)) kJ/mol. This yields a standard enthalpy of formation of adsorbed 2-cyclohexenyl on Pt(111) at a low coverage of -143 kJ/mol. At coverages below 0.10 ML, the sticking probability of cyclohexene on Pt(111) is close to unity (>0.95), independent of temperature.  相似文献

Exposing water to a (2 x 2)-O precovered Pt(111) surface at 100 K and subsequently annealing at 155 K led to the formation of a well-ordered (square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees overlayer. The structure of this overlayer is determined by DFT and full dynamical LEED calculations. There are two O containing groups per (square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees unit cell and both occupy near on-top positions with a Pt-O bond length of (2.11 +/- 0.04) A. DFT calculations determined the hydrogen positions of the OH species and clearly indicate hydrogen bonds between the neighboring adsorbed OH groups whose interaction is mainly of electrostatic nature. A theoretical comparison with H(2)O shows the hybridization of OH on Pt(111) to be sp(3).  相似文献

The heat of adsorption of naphthalene on Pt(111) at 300 K was measured with single-crystal adsorption calorimetry. The heat of adsorption on the ideal, defect-free surface is estimated to be (300 - 34 - 199(2)) kJ/mol. From this, a C-Pt bond energy for aromatic hydrocarbons on Pt(111) of approximately 30 kJ/mol is estimated, consistent with earlier results for benzene on Pt(111). There is higher heat of adsorption at very low coverage, attributed to step sites where the adsorption heat is >/=330 kJ/mol. Saturation coverage, = 1 ML, corresponds to 1.55 x 10(14) molecules/cm(2). Sticking probability measurements of naphthalene on Pt(111) give a high initial value of 1.0 and a Kisliuk-type coverage dependence that implies precursor-mediated sticking. The ratio of the hopping rate to the desorption rate of this precursor is approximately 51. Naphthalene adsorbs transiently on top of chemisorbed naphthalene molecules with a heat of adsorption of 83-87 kJ/mol.  相似文献

This work presents an electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy study of Sb irreversibly adsorbed on Pt(111) at various potentials. At an open circuit potential (0.46 V vs a Ag/AgCl electrode), well-ordered structures of SbO+ were found: four (4 x 3)-3SbO+ structures and one (2 square root(3) x 2 square root(3))R30 degrees-3SbO+ structure. In addition, several unidentifiable transient structures of SbO+ were observed, and their relations to the well-ordered structures of (4 x 3) and (2 square root(3) x 2 square root(3))R30 degrees, regarding structural evolution, were proposed. At a reducing potential (0 V), the Pt(111) surface was covered with irreversibly adsorbed Sb which consisted of three different domains: protruded domain, domain of uniaxially incommensurate (square root(3) x square root(2))-Sb, and domain of bare (1 x 1) Pt(111). During oxidation of elemental Sb at 0.30 V, the Sb domains of the (square root(3) x square root(2)) structure were oxidized, while the protruded domains were not oxidized. After underpotential deposition of additional Sb onto the Pt(111) covered with irreversibly adsorbed Sb, the whole surface was filled with the Sb domains where each Sb atoms were separated by the square root(2a) distance (a = one Pt-Pt distance, 0.277 nm). The observed electrochemical inactivity below 0.3 V was discussed in terms of the protruded domain of a presumable incommensurate (square root(2) x square root(2)) structure.  相似文献

In-situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and infrared reflection-adsorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) have been used to examine the electrodeposition of gold onto Pt(111) electrodes modified with benzenethiol (BT) and benzene-1,2-dithiol (BDT) in 0.1 M HClO4 containing 10 microM HAuCl4. Both BT and BDT were attached to Pt(111) via one sulfur headgroup. STM and IRRAS results indicated that the other SH group of BDT was pendant in the electrolyte. Both BT and BDT formed (2 x 2) structures at the coverage of 0.25, and they were transformed into (square root(3) x square root(3))R30 degrees as the coverage was raised to 0.33. These two organic surface modifiers resulted in 3D and 2D gold islands at BT- and BDT-coated Pt(111) electrodes, respectively. The pendant SH group of BDT could interact specifically with gold adspecies to immobilize gold adatoms on the Pt(111) substrate, which yields a 2D growth of gold deposition. Molecular resolution STM revealed an ordered array of (6 x 2 square root(13)) after a full monolayer of gold was plated on the BDT/Pt(111) electrode. Since BDT was strongly adsorbed on Pt(111), gold adatoms only occupied free sites between BDT admolecules on Pt(111). This is supported by a stripping voltammetric analysis, which reveals no reductive desorption of BDT admolecules at a gold-deposited BDT/Pt(111) electrode. It seems that the BDT adlayer acted as the template for gold deposit on Pt(111). In contrast, a BT adlayer yielded 3D gold deposit on Pt(111). This study demonstrates unambiguously that organic surface modifiers could contribute greatly to the electrodeposition of metal adatoms.  相似文献

We used the B3LYP flavor of density functional theory (DFT) to study the chemisorption of all CH(x) and C(2)H(y) intermediates on the Pt(111) surface. The surface was modeled with the 35 atom Pt(14.13.8) cluster, which was found to be reliable for describing all adsorption sites. We find that these hydrocarbons all bind covalently (sigma-bonds) to the surface, in agreement with the studies by Kua and Goddard on small Pt clusters. In nearly every case the structure of the adsorbed hydrocarbon achieves a saturated configuration in which each C is almost tetrahedral with the missing H atoms replaced by covalent bonds to the surface Pt atoms. Thus, (Pt(3))CH prefers a mu(3) hollow site (fcc), (Pt(2))CH(2) prefers a mu(2) bridge site, and PtCH(3) prefers mu(1) on-top sites. Vinyl leads to (Pt(2))CH-CH(2)(Pt), which prefers a mu(3) hollow site (fcc). The only exceptions to this model are ethynyl (CCH), which binds as (Pt(2))C=CH(Pt), retaining a CC pi-bond while binding at a mu(3) hollow site (fcc), and HCCH, which binds as (Pt)HC=CH(Pt), retaining a pi bond that coordinates to a third atom of a mu(3) hollow site (fcc) to form an off center structure. These structures are in good agreement with available experimental data. For all species we calculated heats of formation (DeltaH(f)) to be used for considering various reaction pathways on Pt(111). For conditions of low coverage, the most strongly bound CH(x) species is methylidyne (CH, BE = 146.61 kcal/mol), and ethylidyne (CCH(3), BE = 134.83 kcal/mol) among the C(2)H(y) molecules. We find that the net bond energy is nearly proportional to the number of C-Pt bonds (48.80 kcal/mol per bond) with the average bond energy decreasing slightly with the number of C ligands.  相似文献

The monolayer (ML) and submonolayer Pt on both terminations of PbTiO3(110) polar surface have been studied by using density functional theory (DFT) with projector‐augmented wave(PAW) potential and a supercell approach. The most favored ML Pt arrangements on PbTiO and O2 terminations are the hollow site and the short‐bridge site, respectively. By examining the geometries of different ML arrangements, we know that the dominant impetus for stability of the favored adsorption site for PbTiO termination is the Pt–Ti interaction (mainly from covalent bonding), while that for O2 termination is the Pt–O interaction (mainly from ionic bonding). In addition, the appearance of the gap electronic states in the outermost layers of each termination indicates that a channel for charge transfer between adsorbed layer and substrate is formed. Moreover, the interface hybridization between Pt 5d and O 2p orbitals is also observed, especially for ML Pt on O2 termination. The stability sequences for various arrangements of 1/2 ML Pt adsorption conform well with those of ML Pt adsorption, and the most stable arrangement is energetically more favorable than the corresponding ML coverage in the view of adsorption energy maximization. The behavior, i.e. the increase in adsorption energy with decrease in coverage, indicates that Pt? Pt interactions weaken those between Pt and the substrate. The adsorption and thermal desorption of Zn and ZnO on Pd(111) was studied in the temperature range between 300 and 1300 K with TDS, LEED, and CO adsorption measurements. At temperatures below 400 K, multilayer growth of Zn metal on the Pd(111) surface takes place. At a coverage of 0.75 ML of Zn, a p(2 x 2)-3Zn LEED structure is observed. Increasing the coverage to 3 ML results in a (1 x 1) LEED pattern arising from an ordered Zn multilayer on Pd(111). Thermal desorption of the Zn multilayer state leads to two distinct Zn desorption peaks: a low-temperature desorption peak (400-650 K) arising from upper Zn layers and a second peak (800-1300 K) originating from the residual 1 ML Zn overlayer, which is more strongly bound to the Pd(111) surface and blocks CO adsorption completely. Above 650 K, this Zn adlayer diffuses into the subsurface region and the surface is depleted in Zn, as can be deduced from an increased amount of CO adsorption sites. Deposition of >3 ML of Zn at 750 K leads to the formation of a well-ordered Pd-Zn alloy exhibiting a (6 x 4 square root 3/3)rect. LEED structure. CO adsorption measurements on this surface alloy indicate a high Pd surface concentration and a strong reduction of the CO adsorption energy. Deposition of Zn at T > 373 K in 10(-6) mbar of O2 leads to the formation of an epitaxial (6 x 6) ZnO overlayer on Pd(111). Dissociative desorption of ZnO from this overlayer occurs quantitatively both with respect to Zn and O2 above 750 K, providing a reliable calibration for both ZnO, Zn, and oxygen coverage.  相似文献

When water is adsorbed on Pt(111) above 135 K several different ice structures crystallize, depending on the thickness of the ice layer. At low coverage water forms extended islands of ice with a (square root(37) x square root(37))R25(o) unit cell, which compresses as the monolayer saturates to form a (square root(39) x square root(39))R16(o) structure. The square root(39) low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) pattern becomes more intense as the second layer grows, remaining bright for films up of 10-15 layers and then fading and disappearing for films more than ca. 40 layers thick. The ice multilayer consists of an ordered square root(39) wetting layer, on which ice grows as a crystalline film which progressively loses its registry to the wetting layer. Ice films more than ca. 50 layers thick develop a hexagonal LEED pattern, the entire film and wetting layer reorienting to form an incommensurate bulk ice. These changes are reflected in the vibrational spectra which show changes in line shape and intensity associated with the different ice structures. Thin amorphous solid water films crystallize to form the same phases observed during growth, implying that these structures are thermodynamically stable and not kinetic phases formed during growth. The change from a square root(39) registry to incommensurate bulk ice at ca. 50 layers is associated with a change in crystallization kinetics from nucleation at the Pt(111) interface in thin films to nucleation of incommensurate bulk ice in amorphous solid water films more than 50 layers thick.  相似文献

A dramatic multilayer substrate relaxation is observed for the (square root 19 x square root 19)-13CO adlayer phase on a Pt(111) electrode by surface X-ray scattering. Within the (square root 19 x square root 19) unit cell, a vertical expansion of 0.28 A was determined for the Pt atoms under near-top-site CO molecules, whereas only 0.04 A was found under near-bridge-site CO molecules. The lateral displacements involve small rotations toward more symmetric bonding. Both the expansions and rotations extend into the bulk with a decay length of 1.8 Pt layers. This nonuniform layer expansion, hitherto unseen, appears to be a manifestation of the differential stress induced by CO adsorption at different sites.  相似文献

The adsorption states and growth process of the first water (D2O) layer on Rh(111) were investigated using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, temperature programed desorption, and spot-profile-analysis low energy electron diffraction. Water molecules wet the Rh(111) surface intact. At the early stage of first layer growth, a (square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees commensurate water layer grows where "up" and "down" species coexist; the up and down species represent water molecules which have free OD, pointing to a vacuum and the substrate, respectively. The up domain was a flatter structure than an icelike bilayer. Water desorption from Rh(111) was a half-order process. The activation energy and the preexponential factor of desorption are estimated to be 60 kJ/mol and 4.8 x 10(16) ML(1/2)/s at submonolayer coverage, respectively. With an increase in water coverage, the flat up domain becomes a zigzag layer, like an ice bilayer. At the saturation coverage, the amount of down species is 1.3 times larger than that of the up species. In addition, the activation energy and the preexponential factor of desorption decrease to 51 kJ/mol and 1.3 x 10(14) ML(1/2)/s, respectively.  相似文献

The electrocatalytic oxidation of ammonia on Pt(111) and Pt(100) has been studied using voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and in situ infrared spectroscopy. The oxidative adsorption of ammonia results in the formation of NH(x) (x = 0-2) adsorbates. On Pt(111), ammonia oxidation occurs in the double-layer region and results in the formation of NH and, possibly, N adsorbates. The experimental current transients show a hyperbolic decay (t(-1)), which indicates strong lateral (repulsive) interactions between the (reacting) species. On Pt(100), the NH(2) adsorbed species is the stable intermediate of ammonia oxidation. Stabilization of the NH and NH(2) fragments on Pt(111) and Pt(100), respectively, is in an interesting agreement with recent theoretical predictions. The Pt(111) surface shows extremely low activity in ammonia oxidation to dinitrogen, thus indicating that neither NH nor N (strongly) adsorbed species are active in dinitrogen production. Neither nitrous oxide nor nitric oxide is the product of ammonia oxidation on Pt(111) at potentials up to 0.9 V, as deduced from the in situ infrared spectroscopy measurements. The Pt(100) surface is highly active in dinitrogen production. This process is characterized by a Tafel slope of 30 mV decade(-1), which is explained by a rate-determining dimerization of NH(2) fragments followed by a fast decay of the resulting surface-bound hydrazine to dinitrogen. Therefore, the high activity of the Pt(100) surface for ammonia oxidation to dinitrogen is likely to be related to its ability to stabilize the NH(2) adsorbate.  相似文献

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of octanethiol and benzeneethanethiol were deposited on clean Pt(111) surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). Highly resolved images of these SAMs produced by an in situ scanning tunneling microscope (STM) showed that both systems organize into a super-structure mosaic of domains of locally ordered, closely packed molecules. Analysis of the STM images indicated a (square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees unit cell for the octanethiol SAMs and a 4(square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees periodicity based on 2 x 2 basic molecular packing for the benzeneethanethiol SAMs under the coverage conditions investigated. SAMs on Pt(111) exhibited differences in molecular packing and a lower density of disordered regions than SAMs on Au(111). Electron transport measurements were performed using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Benzeneethanethiol/Pt(111) junctions exhibited a higher conductance than octanethiol/Pt(111) junctions.  相似文献

We have studied the adsorption of benzenethiol molecules on the Au(111) surface by using first principles total energy calculations. A single thiolate molecule is adsorbed at the bridge site slightly shifted toward the fcc-hollow site, and is tilted by 61 degrees from the surface normal. As for the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) structures, the (2 square root of 3 x square root of 3)R30 degrees herringbone structure is stabilized against the (square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees structure by large steric relaxation. In the most stable (2 square root 3 x square root 3)R30 degrees SAM structure, the molecule is adsorbed at the bridge site with the tilting angle of 21 degrees, which is much smaller compared with the single molecule adsorption. The van der Waals interaction plays an important role in forming the SAM structure. The adsorption of benzenethiolates induces the repulsive interaction between surface Au atoms, which facilitates the formation of surface Au vacancy.  相似文献

Molecular orientations and assembled structures of C(60) molecules on Pt(111) have been characterized by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy for coverage between 0.1 ML and 1.5 ML. At room temperature, C(60) molecules preferentially decorate the steps and nucleate into single layer islands (SLIs) with hexagonal close-packed structures upon increasing coverage. C(60) islands comprise two differently oriented C(60)∕Pt(111)-(√13?×?√13) R13.9° phases, in which five types of molecular orientation of C(60) carbon cage configurations are clearly identified by the high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy image. Further annealing treatment leads to more uniform molecular orientation without apparent aggregation of C(60) SLIs. As coverage increases above 1 ML, domains corresponding to (2√3?×?2√3) R30° superstructure appear. To explain the above transformation, an interfacial reconstruction model is proposed according to the detailed study of the molecular adsorption structures in different domains.  相似文献
