Summary Levels of several derivatives of benzene were examined in natural surface water (river Zala, West-Hungary) by solid phase micro extraction. Results from the river water samples were compared to the results from spiked double distilled water. The difference in extraction efficiency is termed a “matrix effect”. Large matrix effect causing the change of extraction efficiency experienced in this study. Relationship was found between the matrix effect and TOC, TIC, suspended and the dissolved matter content. The applicability of hollow fibre liquid-phase microextraction (LPME), as an alternative to solid-phase extraction (SPE), for the extraction/enrichment of acidic drugs (e.g. ibuprofen, clofibric acid, bezafibrate, etc.) from water samples prior to the determination by LC-ESI-MS-MS has been evaluated. After LPME method optimisation, it was found that this technique can provide very clean extracts, which do not lead to signal suppression during LC-ESI-MS-MS analysis of the analytes. The limits of quantification (0.5-42 ng/L) are suitable for the analysis of these drugs in wastewater. However repeatability needs to been improved (intra-day R.S.D. = 3.4-32%), which may be expected by automation and the development of commercially available devices and fibres specially prepared for analytical purposes. The method was finally applied to wastewater samples (treated and untreated) and results comparable to SPE were obtained.

In the present work the determination of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene (BTEX) in environmental sample solutions using gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection (GC-FID) combined with three different sampling techniques, such as; direct single drop microextraction (DI-SDME), headspace single drop microextraction (HS-SDME) and ultrasonic assisted HS-SDME, were compared. In all of these techniques, for the determination of BTEX, the experimental parameters such as organic solvent effect, extraction time, agitation speed and salting effect were optimised. At their optimised conditions of operation the detection limits, times of extraction and precision for the three techniques are established. A detailed comparison of the analytical performance characteristics of these techniques for final GC-FID determination of BTEX in water samples was given. The technique provided a linear range of 50–20000?ng?mL–1 for DI-SDME and 10–20000?ng?mL–1 for HS-SDME methods, good repeatability (RSDs <4.72–7.74% for DI-SDME and 1.80–7.05% for HS-SDME (n?=?5), good linearity (r?≥?0.9978) and limits of detection (LODs) in the range of 0.006–10?ng?mL?1 for DI-SDME, 0.1–3?ng?mL–1 for HS-SDME methods (S/N?=?3). Then the optimised techniques were also applied to real samples (river and waste waters) containing BTEX and similar precision (RSD?<?8.2,?n?=?3) was obtained.

An electromembrane extraction procedure coupled with HPLC and visible detection was applied for the extraction of three textile azo dyes as organic salts. The extraction parameters such as extraction time, applied voltage, pH range, and concentration of salt added were optimized. A driving force of 60 V was applied to extract the analytes through 2‐nitrophenyl octyl ether, used as the supported liquid membrane, into a neutral aqueous solution. This method required 20 min extraction time from a neutral sample solution. The proposed microextraction technique provided good linearity with correlation coefficients from 0.996 to 0.998 over a concentration range of 1.0–1000.0 ng/mL. The LODs of dyes were 0.30–0.75 ng/mL, while the reproducibility ranged from 6.7 to 12.9% (n = 6). Also, enrichment factors of 96–162 that corresponded to the recoveries ranging from 48 to 81% were achieved. Finally, the application of this new method was demonstrated on wastewater samples and some plants grown in contaminated environments. Excellent selectivity was obtained as no interfering peaks were detected.

A novel titania sol-gel coating, including tetrabutyl orthototitanat (TBOT) as initial alkoxide, triethanolamine (TEA) as stabilizer, nitric acid as acid catalyst, and polyethylene glycol (PEG, 6000) as binder was prepared for the first time on an anodized aluminium wire and subsequently applied to headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) with gas chromatography flame ionization detection (GC-FID). The analytical characteristics of the proposed porous titania sol-gel derived TBOT/PEG/TEA (41.6:16.0:42.4) fiber were comparable with reported fibers. The extraction temperature, extraction time, effect of salt addition, desorption temperature and desorption time were optimized. Under the optimized conditions and for all BTEX components, the linearity was from 20 to 800 μg L−1, the RSD was below 8.2% and limit of detections (LODs) were between 5.4 and 14.8 μg L−1. The recovery values were from 86.7% to 94.2% in water samples. The proposed HS-SPME-GC-FID method was successfully applied for the analysis of BTEX compounds from petrochemical wastewater samples.

Solid phase microextraction (SPME) was applied in the development of a protocol for the analysis of a number of target organic compounds in landfill site samples. The selected analytes, including aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbous, and unsaturated compounds, were absorbed directly from a headspace sample above a soil layer onto a fused silica fiber. Following exposure, the fiber was thermally desorbed in the injection port of the gas chromatograph and eluted compounds were detected using a mass selective detector. The stability and sensitivity of the extraction technique were examined at five temperatures (22–60°C) using a 100μm polydimethylsiloxane fiber. Calibrations, using soil samples spiked with selected solvents (0.5–30 μg/g), were linear; trichloroethene (r2 = 0.992) and benzene (r2 = 0.998). SPME was applied to the examination of a municipal landfill where 8 sites were sampled, at three depths, resulting in the detection of xylene (maximum 2.8 μg/g) and a number of other non-target organic contaminants.

Dynamic gas sampling using solid phase microextraction (SPME) was evaluated for recovery of reactive terpenes and terpenoids in the presence of ozone. For limonene, α-terpineol and dihydromyrcenol in the 20-60 ppb range, this method achieves >80% recovery for ozone mixing ratios up to 100 ppb. Both the experimental results and a model analysis indicate that higher ozone concentrations and longer sampling times result in lower percent recovery. Typically greater than 90% recovery and ppb level method detection limits were achieved with a 5 min sample time. Increasing the flow rate from 100 to 400 sccm flow (5-20 cm s−1) through the active sampler did not significantly affect sensitivity or recovery in most cases, probably due to negligible mass-transfer improvements. The recovery for each compound improves when sampling from a mixture of different species than that from a single compound sample. This may be due to competition for ozone amongst adsorbed species. Dynamic SPME sampling can improve detection and quantification of terpenes in reactive environments, especially for low vapor pressure (<5 mm Hg at 25 °C) compounds that can be adsorbed to ozone scrubbers used in other methods.

Solid phase microextraction (SPME) was used as the sample introduction technique for high-speed isothermal GC. An injector dedicated for SPME fiber injection was designed and built. The injector was operated in two modes, continuously heated and flash heated. The latter mode proved to be better for high-speed separations. The injector was then used for sample introduction in separation of BTEX. When sampling directly from water with a fiber having a 56 μm thick poly(dimethylsiloxane) coating, the BTEX components were separated under isothermal conditions in ca. 18 s. A fiber with a thinner coating (15 μm) enabled the separation to be completed in ca. 12 s when sampling from headspace. In both cases the results were highly reproducible, as measured by the estimated values of the relative standard deviation.

Summary Extra-fine powdered activated charcoal has been used as stationary phase (coating layer) in solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The efficiency and reliability of the prepared device have been investigated for the extraction of some volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene isomers (BTEX) from the headspace of water samples. Monitoring of the extracted compounds and further quantitative analysis of the real samples have been performed by capillary GC-FID. Effects of several factors such as temperature, addition of salt, and stirring speed on extraction efficiency and exposure time have been studied. Under optimum conditions, extraction recoveries for these compounds from 50 mL water were >95%. The calibration graphs were linear in the range 5 to 104 pg mL−1 and the detection limit for each BTEX compound was 1.5–2 pg mL−1. The results obtained by use of this porous layer activated charcoal (PLAC)-coated fiber have also been compared with results reported in the literature by use of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated fiber. The extraction of chlorophenol from water by headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) in vials located both vertically and horizontally is compared. The results obtained show that kinetic parameters are clearly affected by how the vial is placed in the analysis of semivolatile compounds. Extraction time for reach the equilibrium was three times lower in the horizontal configuration. An on-line extraction unit coupled to a continuous flow system is used to analyse unmodified ground water samples. In order to increase the high throughput, the analysis time is reduced and the sensitivity increased by making the extraction simultaneously with two fibres. The proposed method is applied to the analysis of spiked river water samples. The precision expressed as relative standard deviation ranges from 3.5 to 4.8%, and the recoveries from 94 to 105%.

Epichlorohydrin is used frequently in many industrial processes. Exposure to this pollutant could induce harmful effects. The present work developed a novel solid phase microextraction (SPME) method for time weighted average determination of epichlorohydrin in the air by GC/MS. CAR/PDMS in 0.5?cm retracted mode was selected and the effect of environmental parameters on sampling properties of SPME was examined. Experimental sampling rate for epichlorohydrin (8.89?×?10?3?cm3/min) was slightly less than theoretical value (9.059?×?10?3?cm3/min). There was no significant difference among sampling rates at different temperature and velocities but relative humidity had a significant effect on the sampling rate. Limit of detection for SPME method was 0.8?ng per sample, which is good enough in comparison with the NIOSH 1010 method. Comparison of the results between the developed SPME and the NIOSH 1010 method on standard test atmosphere and field showed satisfactory agreement (y?=?1.162x?+?1.8 r 2?=?0.992 and y?=?1.009x+0.76 r 2?=?0.98 respectively).

This work has developed a miniaturized method based on matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD) using C18 as dispersant and acetonitrile–water as eluting solvent for the analysis of legislated organochlorinated pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) in biota samples by GC with electron capture (GC-ECD). The method has compared Florisil®-acidic Silica and C18 as dispersant for samples as well as different solvents. Recovery studies showed that the combination of C18–Florisil® was better when using low amount of samples (0.1 g) and with low volumes of acetonitrile–water (2.6 mL). The use of SPME for extracting the analytes from the solvent mixture before the injection resulted in detection limits between 0.3 and 7.0 μg kg−1 (expressed as wet mass). The miniaturized procedure was easier, faster, less time consuming than the conventional procedure and reduces the amounts of sample, dispersant and solvent volume by approximately 10 times. The proposed procedure was applied to analyse several biota samples from different parts of the Comunidad Valenciana.

Difficulties detected in the determination of the diethylhexylphthalate (DEHP) at trace levels by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) using SPME, due to its ubiquitous distribution in the environment has been overcome and a new method for the determination of DEHP in drinking water has been proposed. The method is based on solid phase microextraction (SPME) coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Detection was carried out spectrophotometrically. Calibration graph was linear in the range 10–110 μg/L with a regression coefficient of r2 = 0.998 and a detection limit of 0.6 μg/L. The relative standard deviation was 5 and 2% (n = 4) for chromatographic areas and retention times, respectively. The usefulness of the SPME–HPLC technique was confirmed.

The potential of solid phase microextraction (SPME) for the determination of the soil fumigants 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-DCP) and methyl isothiocyanate (MITC) in environmental samples such as soil and water samples has been investigated. Direct immersion SPME followed by GC/ECD/NPD analysis allowed the rapid determination of the two fumigants in water samples, with very little sample manipulation, giving an LOD of 0.5 microg L(-1). Precision, calculated as relative standard deviation (RSD) for six replicates at three concentration levels, was found to be lower than 20% at the concentration levels tested. For the analysis of soil samples, headspace (HS)-SPME combined with GC/ECD/NPD analysis has been applied. Quantification using matrix-matched calibration curves allowed determination of both analytes (MITC and 1-3-DCP) with a LOD of 0.1 microg kg(-1) (RSD < 10%) for the two concentration levels assayed (0.02 and 0.2 mg kg(-1)). The HS-SPME procedure developed in this paper was applied to soil samples from experimental green house plots treated with metham-Na, a soil disinfestation agent that decomposes in soil to MITC. The absence of sample manipulation as well as the low solvent consumption in SPME methodology are among the main advantages of this analytical approach.

A simple procedure for the determination of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE), ethyl butyl ether (EBE), tert-amyl methyl ether (TAME), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) in water using headspace (HS) solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was developed. The analysis was carried out by gas chromatography (GC) equipped with flame ionization detector (FID) and 100% dimethylpolysiloxane fused capillary column. A 2 Plackett-Burman design for screening and a central composite design (CCD) for optimizing the significant variables were applied. Fiber type, extraction temperature, sodium chloride concentration, and headspace volume were the significant variables. A 65 microm poly(dimethylsiloxane)-divinylbenzene (PDMS-DVB) SPME fiber, 10 degrees C, 300 g/l, and 20 ml of headspace (in 40 ml vial) were respectively chosen for the best extraction response. An extraction time of 10 min was enough to extract the ethers and BTEX. The relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) for the procedure varied from 2.6 (benzene) to 8.5% (ethylbenzene). The method detection limits (MDLs) found were from 0.02 (toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) to 1.1 microg/l (MTBE). The optimized method was applied to the analysis of the rivers, marinas and fishing harbors surface waters from Gipuzkoa (North Spain). Three sampling were done in 1 year from June 2002 to June 2003. Toluene was the most detected analyte (in 90% of the samples analyzed), with an average concentration of 0.56 microg/l. MTBE was the only dialkyl ether detected (in 15% of the samples) showing two high levels over 400 microg/l that were related to accidental fuel spill.

A tetraquinoxaline cavitand functionalized with methylenoxy bridges at the upper rim is proposed as selective solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating for the determination of BTEX at trace levels in air. The SPME fibers were characterized in terms of film thickness, morphology, thermal stability and extraction capabilities. An average coating thickness of 35 (±4) μm, a thermal stability up to 350 °C and a good fiber-to-fiber and batch-to-batch repeatability with RSD lower than 15% were obtained. Excellent enrichment factors ranging from 360–700 × 103 were obtained for the investigated compounds. Finally, method validation proved the capabilities of the developed coating for the selective sampling of BTEX, achieving LOD values in the 0.4–1.2 ng m−3 range.

A solid-phase microextraction (SPME) method for the determination of triclosan, methyl triclosan, 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2,3,4-trichlorophenol (considered as possible triclosan metabolites) in water samples was optimised. Analytes were first concentrated on a SPME fibre, directly exposed to the sample, and then triclosan and the two chlorinated phenols on-fibre silylated using N-methyl-N-(tert.-butyldimethylsilyl)-trifluoroacetamide (MTBSTFA). Methyl triclosan remained unaffected during the derivatization step. Compounds were determined using gas chromatography in combination with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Influence of different factors on the efficiency of extraction and derivatization steps was systematically investigated. Using a polyacrylate (PA) fibre quantification limits below 10 ng/l, and acceptable relative standard deviations, were obtained for all compounds after an extraction time of 30 min. On-fibre silylation was carried out in only 10 min. Moreover, the efficiency of the procedure was scarcely affected by the type of water sample. The method was applied to several samples of treated and raw wastewater, triclosan was found in all samples, at concentrations from 120 to 14,000 ng/l, and 2,4-dichlorophenol in most of them, at levels up to 2222 ng/l.
