Phase behavior of blends of a liquid-crystalline (LC) polymer with a non-LC polymer and of a series of copolymers containing mesogenic and nonmesogenic units was studied by thermal, optical, and dynamic mechanical methods. The polymers composing the blends and the copolymers had the same constituent monomers. The blends exhibited phase separation over the whole range of compositions studied as observed by DSC and dynamic mechanical analysis. Two glass transition temperatures (Tg) corresponding to the two components and independence of melting (Tm) and isotropization temperatures (Ti) to changes in composition were observed for the blends. The copolymers did not show phase separation over most of the composition range studied. Only one Tg corresponding to that of the major component could be detected for the copolymers, and the Tg was found to increase with an increase in the amount of nonmesogenic monomer in the copolymers. The difference in phase behavior was explained on the basis of the chemical environment of the constituent units in the blends and in copolymers. Phase inversion in the blends was observed by microscopy when the blends contained 60 mol% or more of the non-LC polymer.  相似文献

The objective of this review is to organize literature data on the thermodynamic properties of salt‐containing polystyrene/poly(ethylene oxide) (PS/PEO) blends and polystyrene‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (SEO) diblock copolymers. These systems are of interest due to their potential to serve as electrolytes in all‐solid rechargeable lithium batteries. Mean‐field theories, developed for pure polymer blends and block copolymers, are used to describe phenomenon seen in salt‐containing systems. An effective Flory–Huggins interaction parameter, χeff , that increases linearly with salt concentration is used to describe the effect of salt addition for both blends and block copolymers. Segregation strength, χeffN , where N is the chain length of the homopolymers or block copolymers, is used to map phase behavior of salty systems as a function of composition. Domain spacing of salt‐containing block copolymers is normalized to account for the effect of copolymer composition using an expression obtained in the weak segregation limit. The phase behavior of salty blends, salty block copolymers, and domain spacings of the latter systems, are presented as a function of chain length, composition and salt concentration on universal plots. While the proposed framework has limitations, the universal plots should serve as a starting point for organizing data from other salt‐containing polymer mixtures. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. The miscibility of polysulfone (PSf) with various hydrophilic copolymers was explored. Among these blends, PSf gave homogeneous mixtures with poly(1‐vinylpyrrolidone‐co‐styrene) [P(VP–S)] copolymers when these copolymers contained 68–88 wt % 1‐vinylpyrrolidone (VP). Miscible PSf blends with P(VP–S) copolymers underwent phase separation on heating caused by lower critical solution temperature (LCST)‐type phase behavior. The phase behavior depended on the copolymer composition. Changes in the VP content of P(VP–S) copolymers from 65 to 68 wt % shifted the phase behavior from immiscibility to miscibility and the LCST behavior. The phase‐separation temperatures of the miscible blends first increased gradually with the VP content, then went through a broad maximum centered at about 80 wt % VP, and finally decreased just before the limiting content of VP for miscibility with PSf. The interaction energies of binary pairs involved in PSf/P(VP–S) blends were evaluated from the phase‐separation temperatures of PSf/P(VP–S) blends with lattice‐fluid theory combined with a binary interaction model. The decrease in the contact angle between water and the membrane surface with increasing VP content in P(VP–S) copolymers indicated that the hydrophobic properties of PSf could be improved via blending with hydrophilic P(VP–S) copolymers. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of two or more ethylene–styrene (ES) copolymers that differed primarily in the comonomer composition of the copolymers were studied. Available thermodynamic models for copolymer–copolymer blends were utilized to determine the criteria for miscibility between two ES copolymers differing in styrene content and also between ES copolymers and the respective homopolymers, polystyrene and linear polyethylene. Model estimations were compared with experimental observations based primarily on melt‐blended ES/ES systems, particularly via the analysis of the glass‐transition (Tg ) behavior from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and solid‐state dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. The critical comonomer difference in the styrene content at which phase separation occurred was estimated to be about 10 wt % for ES copolymers with a molecular weight of about 105 and was in general agreement with the experimental observations. The range of ES copolymers that could be produced by the variation of the comonomer content allowed the study of blends with amorphous and semicrystalline components. Crystallinity differences for the blends, as determined by DSC, appeared to be related to the overlapping of the Tg of the amorphous component with the melting range of the semicrystalline component and/or the reduction in the mobility of the amorphous phase due to the presence of the higher Tg of the amorphous blend component. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Recent experimental evidence and theoretical predictions indicate that binary blends of relatively monodisperse diblock copolymers remain miscible if the molecular weight disparity of the constituent copolymers is not too great. In this work, we examine the effect of moderate copolymer polydispersity on both the microstructural characteristics and phase behavior of blends prepared from four compositionally symmetric poly(styrene-b-isoprene) (SI) diblock copolymers ranging in polydispersity (w/n) from 1.02 to 1.30. Blend periodicities, measured by small-angle X-ray scattering, compare favorably with predictions from a strong segregation theory proposed for lamellar diblock copolymer blends composed of monomolecular copolymers. Transmission electron microscopy, employed to ascertain the real-space morphological characteristics of these blends, reveals that a lamellar → cylindrical transition occurs in macrophase-separated blends. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The miscibility of tetramethylpolycarbonate (TMPC) blends with styrenic copolymers containing various methacrylates was examined, and the interaction energies between TMPC and methacrylate were evaluated from the phase‐separation temperatures of TMPC/copolymer blends with lattice‐fluid theory combined with a binary interaction model. TMPC formed miscible blends with styrenic copolymers containing less than a certain amount of methacrylate, and these miscible blends always exhibited lower critical solution temperature (LCST)‐type phase behavior. The phase‐separation temperatures of TMPC blends with copolymers such as poly(styrene‐co‐methyl methacrylate), poly(styrene‐co‐ethyl methacrylate), poly(styrene‐con‐propyl methacrylate), and poly(styrene‐co‐phenyl methacrylate) increase with methacrylate content, go through a maximum, and decrease, whereas those of TMPC blends with poly(styrene‐con‐butyl methacrylate) and poly(styrene‐co‐cyclohexyl methacrylate) always decrease. The calculated interaction energy for a copolymer–TMPC pair is negative and increases with the methacrylate content in the copolymer. This would seem to contradict the prediction of the binary interaction model, that systems with more favorable energetic interactions have higher LCSTs. A detailed inspection of lattice‐fluid theory was performed to explain such phase behavior. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 1288–1297, 2002  相似文献

Polyethylene‐polycaprolactone graft copolymers with different chemical structures (i.e. different number and length of PCL grafts and molecular weight of PE backbone) were synthesized from various EVOH copolymers and ϵ‐caprolactone, using Aluminum isopropoxide as catalyst, and were tested for their compatibilizing capability in PE/PVC blends. PE and PCL segments in the graft copolymers were found completely immiscible, while PCL segments of the graft copolymers were found completely miscible with PVC. When graft copolymers were added to PE/PVC blends they proved to be good agents for the dispersion of PVC phase in the PE matrix. SEM showed also improved adhesion between the dispersed PVC phase and PE matrix. Moderate improvements in mechanical properties were also observed in preliminary tensile tests.  相似文献

Compatibilization of blends of polybutadiene and poly(methyl methacrylate) with butadiene-methyl methacrylate diblock copolymers has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. When the diblock copolymers are added to the blends, the size of PB particles decreases and their size distribution gets narrower. In PB/PMMA7.6K blends with P(B-b-MMA)25.2K as a compatibilizer, most of micelles exist in the PMMA phase. However, using P(B-b-MMA)38K as a compatibilizer, the micellar aggregation exists in PB particles besides that existing in the PMMA phase. The core of a micelle in the PMMA phase is about 10 nm. In this article the influences of temperature and homo-PMMA molecular weight on compatibilization were also examined. At a high temperature PB particles in blends tend to agglomerate into bigger particles. When the molecular weight of PMMA is close to that of the corresponding block of the copolymer, the best compatibilization result would be achieved. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of hydrogen-bonded blends of nematic liquid-crystalline copolymers with a low-molecular photochromic dopant and their covalent analogs were prepared. Their phase behavior and photooptical properties were studied. The introduction of a dopant increases considerably the isotropization temperatures of the systems. A comparative study of photoorientation processes in the blends and copolymers analogous to them was carried out. The induced dichroism in covalent systems is more pronounced than in similar hydrogen-bonded blends. Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. The phase behaviors of binary blends of poly(styrene‐b‐butadiene) block copolymers were investigated by a small‐angle X‐ray scattering technique. The blends were composed of weakly segregated one in a random micellar phase and the other in a cylindrical phase with similar molecular weights and complementary volume fractions. Morphologies, domain spacings, and order–disorder transition temperatures of the blends indicated that the junctions of the constituent block copolymers share the interface at low temperatures. The domain spacing decreased as temperature increased in a blend with a small amount of the weakly segregated block copolymer. In the cases of the blends with a large amount of the weakly segregated constituent, domain spacing increased with increasing temperature. These results implied that some of the weakly segregated block copolymer moved from the interface to one microdomain at higher temperatures. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Theoretical guidelines are established for designing miscible blends of amorphous polyolefin copolymers. On the basis of calculations for an athermal and incompressible model of copolymer melts, limits are placed on the compositions and structural differences between blend components that are consistent with thermodynamic stability of a single liquid phase. Specific cases analyzed include binary blends of random copolymers containing short branches and blends of graft polymers with long flexible branches, either periodically or randomly placed. The predictions are shown to be in good agreement with recent experimental studies of miscibility in model polyolefin copolymer blends. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Difference in thermal behavior of presumed polypropylene-b-polyethylene block copolymers(PP-PE) and corresponding PP+PE blends was studied. Different views in the literature were unified in our observation that faster cooling rate yielded only one exothermal peak for the blends, while slower cooling rates revealed both PP and PE exothermal peaks. Further details on when a single or double exothermal peaks would appear are discussed. Melting and crystallization temperatures for both PP and PE in blends were found to be a few degrees higher than for PP and PE in block copolymers. Thus, thermal analysis can be used to identify PP-PE block copolymers. These phenomena and the lower △H_f-values of PP and PE in block copolymers than the △H_f-values of pure homo-PP and -PE (for PE even more so) are explained in terms of restricted block movement due to covalent bond between blocks and of crystallization processes in block copolymers. The presence of block structure in the PP-PE samples studied is inferred.  相似文献

We prepared various copolymers containing styrene and methacrylates to examine their miscibility with polycarbonates such as bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC), dimethylpolycarbonate (DMPC), and tetramethylpolycarbonate (TMPC). Among the various copolymers examined, poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐cyclohexylmethacrylate) [P(MMA–CHMA)] copolymers containing proper amounts of cyclohexylmethacrylate (CHMA) formed miscible blends with PC and DMPC, whereas TMPC did not form a miscible blend with P(MMA–CHMA). However, TMPC was miscible with poly(styrene‐co‐cyclohexylmethacrylate) [P(S–CHMA)] copolymers containing less than about 40 wt % CHMA, whereas PC and DMPC were always immiscible with P(S–CHMA). Miscible blends exhibited lower critical solution temperature (LCST)‐type phase behavior. Binary interaction energies were calculated from the observed phase boundaries with lattice–fluid theory combined with a binary interaction model. The quantitative interaction energy of each binary pair indicated that the phenyl ring substitution of polycarbonate with methyl groups did not lead to interactions that were favorable for miscibility with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and CHMA, but it did lead to favorable interactions with styrene. The addition of CHMA to MMA initially increased the LCST but ultimately led to immiscibility with PC and DMPC; however, addition of CHMA to styrene always decreased the LCST with TMPC. The increased LCST of PC or DMPC blends stemmed from intramolecular repulsion between MMA and CHMA, whereas the decreased LCST of TMPC/P(S–CHMA) blends with CHMA content came from negative interaction energy between styrene and CHMA. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The morphology and crystallization behavior of poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) blends compatibilized with graft copolymers were investigated. PPS‐blend‐PET compositions were prepared in which the viscosity of the PPS phase was varied to assess the morphological implications. The dispersed‐phase particle size was influenced by the combined effects of the ratio of dispersed‐phase viscosity to continuous‐phase viscosity and reduced interfacial tension due to the addition of PPS‐graft‐PET copolymers to the blends. In the absence of graft copolymer, the finest dispersion of PET in a continuous phase of PPS was achieved when the viscosity ratio between blend components was nearly equal. As expected, PET particle sizes increased as the viscosity ratio diverged from unity. When graft copolymers were added to the blends, fine dispersions of PET were achieved despite large differences in the viscosities of PPS and PET homopolymers. The interfacial activity of the PPS‐graft‐PET copolymer appeared to be related to the molecular weight ratio of the PPS homopolymer to the PPS segment of the graft copolymer (MH/MA). With increasing solubilization of the PPS graft copolymer segment by the PPS homopolymer, the particle size of the PET dispersed phase decreased. In crystallization studies, the presence of the PPS phase increased the crystallization temperature of PET. The magnitude of the increase in the PET crystallization temperature coincided with the viscosity ratio and extent of the PPS homopolymer solubilization in the graft copolymer. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The compatibilization effect of polystyrene (PS)‐poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) diblock copolymer (PS‐b‐PDMS) and the effect of rheological properties of PS and PDMS on phase structure of PS/PDMS blends were investigated using a selective extraction technique and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The dual‐phase continuity of PS/PDMS blends takes place in a wide composition range. The formation and the onset of a cocontinuous phase structure largely depend on blend composition, viscosity ratio of the constituent components, and addition of diblock copolymers. The width of the concentration region of the cocontinuous structure is narrowed with increasing the viscosity ratio of the blends and in the presence of the small amount diblock copolymers. Quiescent annealing shifts the onset values of continuity. The experimental results are compared with the volume fraction of phase inversion calculated with various theoretical models, but none of the models can account quantitatively for the observed data. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogen-bonded blends based on smectic side group functionalized LC copolymers containing 4-alkyloxybenzoic acid fragments (proton donor) and a non-mesogenic low molecular mass dopant 4-cyanophenyl pyridine-4-carboxylate or 4-methoxyphenyl-d4 pyridine-4-carboxylate (proton acceptor) were obtained. The blends containing 10-35 mol % of low molecular weight dopant form nematic (I-N-SmA) or re-entrant SmA phases (I-SmA-N-SmAre). The temperature dependence of the order parameter S, the birefringence Δn, and the splay K 1 and bend K 3 elastic constants of the nematic phase were studied by 2H NMR spectroscopy and the Fréedericksz method of threshold transitions in a magnetic field. A mechanism for the destruction of the SmA phase and the formation of the nematic phase in the hydrogen-bonded blends is suggested.  相似文献

The miscibility of poly(ε caprolactone) (PCL) with poly(styrene-co-4-hydroxystyrene) (PHS) copolymers was investigated as a function of comonomer composition experimentally and with calculations by two models; the binary interaction model and the association model. PCL was found to be completely miscible with PHS copolymers containing 5 or more mole percent of 4-hydroxystyrene (HS) comonomer units for the entire range of blend compositions. Segmental interaction densities, Bijs, were determined by the analysis of the equilibrium melting point depression and by the application of the binary interaction model. By correlating the segmental interaction energy densities with the binary interaction model, thermodynamic miscibility is for comonomer composition over five mole percent of 4-hydroxystyrene, which is in agreement with the experimental phase behavior. Application of the association model for specific interactions to blends also predicts the experimental miscibility boundary and phase behavior for all the PHS copolymers/PCL blends. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The thermally induced phase separation behavior of hydrogen bonded polymer blends, poly(n-hexyl methacrylate) (PHMA) blended with poly(styrene-co-vinyl phenol) (STVPh) random copolymers having various vinyl phenol contents, was studied by temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC).The enthalpy of phase separation was determined to be about 0.5 cal g–1 for one of the blends. A phase diagram was constructed from the TMDSC data for one of the blends. The kinetics of phase separation was studied by determining the phase compositions from the glass transition temperatures of quenched samples after phase separation. Subsequently, the phase separated samples were annealed at temperatures below the phase boundary to observe the return to the homogeneous state. This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Small‐angle neutron scattering (SANS) was used to examine the melt phase behavior of a heavily branched comb PEE polymer blended separately with two linear PEE copolymers. In this case, PEE refers to poly(ethylene‐r‐ethylethylene) with 10% ethylene units; therefore, the molecular architecture was the only difference between the two components of the blends. The molecular weights of the two linear random copolymers were 60 and 220 kg/mol, respectively. The comb polymer contained an average of 54 long branches, with a molecular weight of 13.7 kg/mol, attached to a backbone with a molecular weight of 10 kg/mol. Three different volume compositions (25/75, 50/50, and 75/25) were investigated for both types of blends. SANS results indicate that all the blends containing the lower molecular weight linear polymer formed single‐phase mixtures, whereas all the blends containing the high molecular weight linear polymer phase‐separated. These results are discussed in the context of current theories for polymer blend miscibility. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 2965–2975, 2000  相似文献

Most blends are two‐phase systems that exhibit coarse morphologies with weak interfaces between the phases. It is well known that these blends can be compatibilized by suitably adapted block copolymers is known. Less known is that random copolymers can compatibilize blends as well, forming interphases. In this study, block and random copolymers of styrene and methylmethacrylate were tested in direct comparison, in a blend of polystyrene and polyvinylchloride. The random copolymers are inferior, as regards the phase morphologies, but competitive, as far as the tensile strength is concerned.  相似文献
