The problem of natural convection in an inclined rectangular porous layer enclosure is studied numerically. The enclosure is heated from one side and cooled from the other by a constant heat flux while the two other walls are insulated. The effect of aspect ratio, inclination angle and Rayleigh number on heat transfer is studied. It is found that the enclosure orientation has a considerable effect on the heat transfer. The negative orientation sharply inhibits the convection and consequently the heat transfer and a positive orientation maximizes the energy transfer. The maximum temperature within the porous medium can be considerably higher than that induced by pure conduction when the cavity is negatively oriented. The peak of the average Nusselt number depends on the Rayleigh number and the aspect ratio. The heat transfer between the two thermally active boundaries is sensitive to the effect of aspect ratio. For an enclosure at high or low aspect ratio, the convection is considerably decreased and the heat transfer depends mainly on conduction.  相似文献

Natural convective flow and heat transfer in an inclined quadrantal cavity is studied experimentally and numerically. The particle tracing method is used to visualize the fluid motion in the enclosure. Numerical solutions are obtained via a commercial CFD package, Fluent. The working fluid is distilled water. The effects of the inclination angle, ? and the Rayleigh number, Ra on fluid flow and heat transfer are investigated for the range of angle of inclination between 0° ? ? ? 360°, and Ra from 105 to 107. It is disclosed that heat transfer changes dramatically according to the inclination angle which affects convection currents inside, i.e. flow physics inside. A fairly good agreement is observed between the experimental and numerical results.  相似文献

Natural convection heat transfer in an inclined fin attached square enclosure is studied both experimentally and numerically. Bottom wall of enclosure has higher temperature than that of top wall while vertical walls are adiabatic. Inclined fin has also adiabatic boundary conditions. Numerical solutions have been done by writing a computer code in Fortran platform and results are compared with Fluent commercial code and experimental method. Governing parameters are Rayleigh numbers (8.105 ≤ Ra ≤ 4 × 106) and inclination angle (30° ≤ and ≤ 120°). The temperature measurements are done by using thermocouples distributed uniformly at the wall of the enclosure. Remarkably good agreement is obtained between the predicted results and experimental data. A correlation is also developed including all effective parameters on heat transfer and fluid flow. It was observed that heat transfer can be controlled by attaching an inclined fin onto wall.  相似文献

This paper discusses the results of a study related to natural convection cooling of a heat source located on the bottom wall of an inclined isosceles triangular enclosure filled with a Cu water-nanofluid. The right and left walls of the enclosure are both maintained cold at constant equal temperatures, while the remaining parts of the bottom wall are insulated. The study has been carried out for a Rayleigh number in the range 104 ≤ Ra ≤ 106, for a heat source length in the range 0.2 ≤ ε ≤0.8, for a solid volume fraction in the range 0 ≤ ?≤0.06 and for an inclination angle in the range 0° ≤ δ≤45°. Results are presented in the form of streamline contours, isotherms, maximum temperature at the heat source surface and average Nusselt number. It is noticed that the addition of Cu nanoparticles enhances the heat transfer rate and therefore cooling effectiveness for all values of Rayleigh number, especially at low values of Ra. The effect of the inclination angle becomes more noticeable as one increases the value of Ra. For high Rayleigh numbers, a critical value for the inclination angle of δ = 15° is found for which the heat source maximum temperature is highest.  相似文献

The present investigation deals with the numerical analysis of steady-state laminar buoyancy-driven convection in an inclined triangular enclosure filled with fluid saturated porous media using the Darcy law equation. One wall of the enclosure is isothermally heated and the other is cooled, while the remaining wall is adiabatic. The effect of inclination angle on natural convection is investigated by varying the angle of inclination (φ) between 0° and 360°. The governing transformed equations are solved numerically using a finite-difference method. Obtained results are shown in the form of streamlines, isotherms, mean Nusselt numbers and dimensionless stream function for different values of the Rayleigh number Ra in the range 100 ≤ Ra ≤ 1,000. It is found that the values of the maximum and minimum mean Nusselt number are reached for φ = 330° and φ = 210° , respectively. However, the lowest flow strength is formed at φ = 240° for all values of Ra.  相似文献

In this work, the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) natural convection heat transfer problem inside a porous medium filled with inclined rectangular enclosures is investigated numerically. The boundary conditions selected on the enclosure are two adiabatic and two isothermal walls. The governing equations, continuity, and Forchheimer extension of the Darcy law and energy are transformed into dimensionless forms by using a set of suitable variables, and then solved by using a finite difference scheme. The governing parameters are the magnetic influence number, the Darcy Rayleigh number, the inclination angle, and the aspect ratio of the enclosure. It is found that the magnetic influence number and the inclination angle have pronounced effects on the fluid flow and heat transfer in porous media-filled enclosures.  相似文献

In this paper, the effects of a magnetic field on natural convection flow in filled long enclosures with Cu/water nanofluid have been analyzed by lattice Boltzmann method. This study has been carried out for the pertinent parameters in the following ranges: the Rayleigh number of base fluid, Ra = 103–105, the volumetric fraction of nanoparticles between 0 and 6 %, the aspect ratio of the enclosure between A = 0.5 and 2. The Hartmann number has been varied from Ha = 0 to 90 with interval 30 while the magnetic field is considered at inclination angles of θ = 0°, 30°, 60° and 90°. Results show that the heat transfer decreases by the increment of Hartmann number for various Rayleigh numbers and the aspect ratios. Heat transfer decreases with the growth of the aspect ratio but this growth causes the effect of the nanoparticles to increase. The magnetic field augments the effect of the nanoparticles at high Rayleigh numbers (Ra = 105). The effect of the nanoparticles rises for high Hartmann numbers when the aspect ratio increases. The rise in the magnetic field inclination improves heat transfer at aspect ratio of A = 0.5.  相似文献

Natural convection in an inclined enclosure from below and containing internally heated fluid has been investigated using a finite difference calculation procedure. Results have been obtained for Rayleigh number values up to 106 and for inclination angles of 30 and 60°. For internal Rayleigh numbers that are much larger than the external Rayleigh number, the flow rises in the interior and moves down both the hot and cold walls. On the other hand, if the external Rayleigh number has a larger magnitude, the flow moves upwards along the hot surface and downwards along the cold surface. For the latter situation, the inner core is multicellular in nature at large external Rayleigh numbers. The average heat flux ratio along the cold surface (convective heat flux/corresponding conduction heat flux) increases with increasing external Rayleigh number and decreasing internal ratio is non-monotonic in nature. The heat flux ratio along both surfaces is observed to be strongly dependent on the inclination angle at high external Rayleigh numbers. A maximum in the local heat flux along the cold surface is obtained in the vicinity of x/L = 1 where hot fluid, either from the interior or directly from the opposite hot wall, meets the surface. Along the hot wall, a maximum in the heat flux ra flo  相似文献

Two-dimensional numerical studies of flow and temperature fields for turbulent natural convection and surface radiation in inclined differentially heated enclosures are performed. Investigations are carried out over a wide range of Rayleigh numbers from 108 to 1012, with the angle of inclination varying between 0° and 90°. Turbulence is modeled with a novel variant of the k–ε closure model. The predicted results are validated against experimental and numerical results reported in literature. The effect of the inclination of the enclosure on pure turbulent natural convection and the latter’s interaction with surface radiation are brought out. Profiles of turbulent kinetic energy and effective viscosity are studied to observe the net effect on the intensity of turbulence caused by the interaction of natural convection and surface radiation. The variations of local Nusselt number and average Nusselt number are presented for various inclination angles. Marked change in the convective Nusselt number is found with the orientation of enclosure. Also analyzed is the influence of change in emissivity on the flow and heat transfer. A correlation relevant to practical applications in the form of average Nusselt number, as a function of Rayleigh number, Ra, radiation convection parameter, N RC and inclination angle of the enclosure, φ is proposed.  相似文献

In this study, the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) natural convection heat transfer with Joule and viscous heating effects inside an iso-flux porous medium-filled inclined rectangular enclosure is studied numerically. An iso-heat flux is applied for heating and cooling the two opposing walls of the enclosure while the other walls are adiabatic. The Forchheimer extension of Darcy-Oberbeck-Boussinesq and energy equations is transformed into a dimensionless form using a set of suitable variables instead of a finite difference scheme. The governing parameters are the magnetic influence number, the modified Rayleigh number, the inclination angle, and the aspect ratio of the enclosure. The results show that viscous and Joule heating effects decrease heat transfer rates.  相似文献

The natural convection on metallic foam-sintered plate at different inclination angles was experimentally studied. Seven copper foam samples with different pore densities (10–40 pore per inch), porosities (0.90–0.95), and aspect ratios (the ratio of foam thickness to sample length, 0.1–0.5) were measured at inclination angles of 0° (vertical orientation), 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, 90° (horizontal orientation). The heat conduction and natural convection inside the foam both contributed to the total heat transfer. Although, the form and viscous drag, which are influenced by permeability and viscous friction in the thermal boundary layer respectively, tend to suppress the natural convection, the heat transfer was finally enhanced by the foam sintered surface due to large surface area extension. Optimum inclination range 60–75° corresponding to maximum average Nu number was found in the heat flux range of 600–1800 W/m2. The sintered foam surface with lower porosity and pore density was recommended for heat transfer enhancement. Particularly, the sample with porosity 0.9, pore density of 10 PPI, aspect ratio of 0.5 offered the highest average Nu number among the studied samples. An empirical correlation for modified Nusselt number at isoflux boundary condition considering the foam morphology parameter and inclination angle was proposed within deviation ±15% between the correlation and the experimental data.  相似文献

The natural convection heat transfer in inclined rectangular enclosures with perfectly conducting fins attached to the heated wall is numerically studied. The parameters governing this problem are the Rayleigh number (102Ra≤2×105), the aspect ratio of the enclosures (2.5≤A=H′/L′≤∞), the dimensionless lengths of the partitions (0≤B=?′/L′≤1), the aspect ratio of micro-cavities (AC=h′/L′≤0.33), the inclination angle (0≤φ≤60°) and the Prandtl number (Pr=0.72). The results indicate that the heat transfer through the cover is considerably affected by the presence of the fins. At low Rayleigh numbers, the heat transfer regime is dominated by conduction. When B≈0.75 and C≈0.33, the heat transfer through the cold wall decreases considerably. This trend is enhanced when the enclosure is inclined. Useful engineering correlations are derived for practical applications.  相似文献

Multiple steady-state solutions of natural convection in an inclined enclosure with a fluid layer and a heat-generating porous bed is investigated numerically by the finite volume method. The conservation equations for the porous layer are based on a general flow model which includes both the effects of flow inertia and friction. The flow in fluid layer is modeled by Navier–Stokes equations. The method of pseudo arc-length continuation is adapted in studying the effects of tilt angle on flow pattern and heat transfer. It is found that, in the whole domain of tilt angle, there exist two groups of solutions with quite different flow pattern and heat transfer behavior. The effects of aspect ratio on flow pattern and heat transfer have also been studied. Received on 04 March 1997  相似文献

A computational study is performed on three-dimensional turbulent flow and heat transfer in a rotating rectangular channel with aspect ratio (AR) of 10:1, oriented 120° from the direction of rotation. The Focus is on high rotation and high-density ratios effects on the heat transfer characteristics of the 120° orientation. The Reynolds stress model (RSM), which accounts for rotational effects are used to compute the turbulent flow and heat transfer in the rotating channel. The effects of rotation and coolant-to-wall density ratio on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics is reported on a range of rotation numbers and density ratios (0 < Ro < 0.25 and 0.07 < Δρ/ρ < 0.4). The computational results are in good agreement with experimental data within ±15%. The results show that the density ratio, rotation number and channel orientation significantly affect the flow field and heat transfer characteristics in the rotating rectangular channel. Flow reversal occurs at high rotation number and density ratio.  相似文献

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effects of heat transfer surface orientation and the solid–liquid contact angle on the boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux (CHF) in water pool boiling using a smooth heat-transfer surface under atmospheric pressure. The orientation angle was ranged from 0° (up-facing horizontal position) to 180° (down-facing horizontal position) with a pace of 45°. The three kinds of heat transfer surfaces having different solid–liquid contact angles were the normal surface with a contact angle of 55°, the hydrophilic surface with a contact angle of 30° and the superhydrophilic surface with a contact angle of 0°. The experimental results indicate that orientation and contact angle have complex, coupling effects on heat transfer and CHF. A predicting correlation for the CHF which takes the effects of both orientation and contact angle into account is established. The predicting correlation agrees reasonably well with the experimental data.  相似文献

A numerical and experimental study has been made on the flow and heat transfer in inclined air-filled cavities with aspect ratios 1–18 at Ra numbers from 2·104–5·105 and angles of inclination from 40 to 90°. Core stratification influences the flow. Due to this there arises a torque with two components depending on angle of inclination. On basis of the two torques the computed effects on flow and temperature fields can be explained. For the heat transfer a scaling law could be derived. Experimental data validate the numerical studies.  相似文献

Natural convective heat transfer from an isothermal narrow flat plate embedded in a plane adiabatic surface and inclined at moderate positive and negative angles to the vertical has been numerically and experimentally studied. The solution has the Rayleigh number, the dimensionless plate width, the angle of inclination, and the Prandtl number as parameters. Attention was restricted to a Prandtl number of 0.7. The numerical results have been obtained for Rayleigh numbers between 103 and 107 for dimensionless plate widths of between 0.3 and 1.2 and for angles of inclination between +45° and −45°. In the experimental study, results have been obtained for Rayleigh numbers between 4 × 102 and 105 for dimensionless plate widths of 0.4 and 2.5 and for angles of inclination between +45° and −45° to the vertical. Empirical equations for the heat transfer rate have been derived.  相似文献

Laminar natural convection has been studied in enclosures bounded by a solid wall with its outer boundary at constant temperature while the opposing side has a constant heat flux. Two-dimensional equations of conservation of mass, momentum and energy, with the Boussinesq approximation are solved using a finite difference method. The numerical procedure adopted is based on the SIMPLER algorithm. Various parameters were: Rayleigh number (from 103 to 106), dimensionless conductivity of bounding wall (from 1 to 10) and dimensionless wall width (from 0.15 to 0.5), aspect ratio (from 0.5 to 1) and the inclination angle (from 30° to 180°). The results are reduced in terms of the normalized Nusselt number as a function of the Rayleigh number, and other dimensionless parameters. The isotherms and streamlines are produced for various Rayleigh numbers and geometrical conditions. It is found that the heat transfer is an increasing function of the Rayleigh number, wall to fluid conductivity ratio, enclosure aspect ratio and a decreasing function of the wall thickness. It passes from a maximum for the inclination angle of about 80°.  相似文献

The main objective of this article is to study the effect of discrete heating on free convection heat transfer in a rectangular porous enclosure containing a heat-generating substance. The left wall of the enclosure has two discrete heat sources and the right wall is isothermally cooled at a lower temperature. The top and bottom walls, and the unheated portions of the left wall are adiabatic. The vorticity–stream function formulation of the governing equations is numerically solved using an implicit finite difference method. The effects of aspect ratio, Darcy number, heat source length, and modified Rayleigh number on the flow and heat transfer are analyzed. The numerical results reveal that the rate of heat transfer increases as the modified Rayleigh number and the Darcy number increases, but decreases on increasing the aspect ratio. The average heat transfer rate is found to be higher at the bottom heater than at the top heater in almost all considered parameter cases except for ε = 0.5. Also, the maximum temperature takes place generally at the top heater except for the case ε = 0.5, where the maximum temperature is found at the bottom heater. Further, the numerical results reveal that the maximum temperature decreases with the modified Rayleigh number and increases with the aspect ratio.  相似文献

An experimental investigation was carried out to study the enhancement of the heat transfer from a heated flat plate fitted with rectangular blocks of 1 × 2 × 2 cm3 dimensions in a channel flow as a function of Reynolds number (Reh), spacing (S y ) of blocks in the flow direction, and the block orientation angle (α) with respect to the main flow direction. The experiments were performed in a channel of 18 cm width and 10 cm height, with air as the working fluid. For fixed S x =3.81 cm, which is the space between the blocks in transverse to the flow direction, the experimental ranges of the parameters were S y =3.33–4.33 cm, α=0–45°, Reh=7625–31550 based on the hydraulic diameter and the average velocity at the beginning of the test section in the channel. Correlations for Nusselt number were developed, and the ratios of heat transfer with blocks to those with no blocks were given. The results indicated that the heat transfer could be enhanced or reduced depending on the spacing between blocks, and the block orientation angle. The maximum heat transfer rate was obtained at the orientation angle of 45°. Received on 13 December 2000 / Published online: 29 November 2001  相似文献
