The growth kinetics and structure of two-dimensional crystals of fine latex particles on solid substrates have been studied using a variety of microscopic techniques: optical microscopy, surface plasmon resonance microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. A circular-shaped crystal is grown from a thin layer of a latex suspension by a two-step mechanism: nucleation and crystal growth. Here we report an experimental study of the factors influencing the crystallization process, especially focusing on the water evaporation rate, the liquid meniscus at the crystal boundary, the particle size and concentration, the substrate, etc. Crystals of good quality and structure are grown at a high evaporation rate (low humidity) favoring a convection-dominated influx of particles from the suspension. The particle diffusion plays a role at suppressed evaporation thus causing an increase in the number of crystal defects. The dynamics of the meniscus slope leads to growth instability resulting in a sequence of multilayer rings. A hexagonal lattice prevails in the final crystal whereas a square lattice is observed in the transition regions between two different hexagonal multilayers. These general trends of the crystallization process are the same for different particle diameters (19 nm, 55 nm, 144 nm and 1.696 μm), volume fractions (0.001–0.01) and substrates (bare and metal-coated glass and mica). A new method is presented that provides experimental information which is qualitatively and quantitatively sensitive to assumptions made as to the mechanisms of free radical entry and of latex particle formation in emulsion polymerization systems. The method consists of (1) obtaining (by electron microscopy) the full particle-size distributions (PSDs) at several different times soon after the cessation of latex particle nucleation, (2) using these PSDs to determine the volume dependences of the various rate coefficients governing particle growth by fitting the data to the appropriate evolution equations, and (3) employing these empirical rate coefficients to find that time dependence of the nucleation rate which fits the early-time PSD (again using the evolution equations). This method is quite sensitive to mechanistic assumptions: for example, one is able to determine whether or not the nucleation rate is an increasing or decreasing function of time. The technique is applied to a styrene nucleation system employing sodium dodecyl sulfate as surfactant at well above the critical micelle conventration. The data cannot be fitted even qualitatively by a simple one-step nucleation mechanis, whether it involes micellar entry or homogeneous nucleation. It is found, on the other hand, that the results can be accurately fitted by assuming that coagulation events between primary colloidal particles, perhaps formed by homogeneous nucleation, dominate both the nucleation process and the entry of free radicals into mature latex particles. In addition, the data indicate that the rate of free radical entry into the latex particles decreases with increasing particle size, at least for particles of unswollen radius less than ca. 40 nm.  相似文献

The diffusiophoretic motion of a homogeneous suspension of identical spherical particles is considered under conditions of small Reynolds and Peclet numbers. The effects of interaction of the individual particles are taken into explicit account by employing a unit cell model which is known to provide good predictions for the sedimentation of monodisperse suspensions of spherical particles. The appropriate equations of conservation of mass and momentum are solved for each cell, in which a spherical particle is envisaged to be surrounded by a concentric shell of suspending fluid, and the diffusiophoretic velocity of the particle is calculated for various cases. Analytical expressions of this mean particle velocity are obtained in closed form as functions of the volume fraction of the particles. Comparisons between the ensemble-averaged diffusiophoretic velocity of a test particle in a dilute suspension and our cell-model results are made.

Polystyrene latex particles modified at the surface with different hydrophilic functional groups were prepared by miniemulsion polymerization and used as controlling agents in the crystallization of zinc oxide from aqueous medium. The effects of the chemical nature of the surface functionalization and the latex concentration on the crystal growth, morphology, and crystalline structure of the resulting zinc oxide were analyzed. Micro‐ and submicrosized crystals with a broad variety of morphologies depending on the functionalization were obtained. Among the different latexes studied, the acrylic‐acid‐derived particles were shown to be a convenient system for further quantitative investigations. In this case, as the additive concentration increases, the length‐to‐width ratio (aspect ratio) of the crystals decreases systematically. Preferential adsorption of the latex particles onto the fast‐growing faces {001} of ZnO is assumed to follow a Langmuir‐type isotherm, and interaction of the adsorbed particles with the growth centers will reduce the growth rate in [001]. This leads to a quantitative relationship linking the aspect ratio to the latex concentration at constant diameter and surface chemistry of the latex. The dependence of the aspect ratio on charge density of the latex can also be modeled by an algorithm in which attractive forces between the latex particle and the ZnO surface are balanced against repulsive forces of an osmotic nature. The latter are associated with the confined volume between the crystal and latex particle surfaces.  相似文献

Here we present the first direct measurement of the viscous drag force between two spherical particles of millimeter size trapped in a thin wetting film. Each particle is constrained by the liquid/air interface and the solid substrate. The viscous force is counterbalanced by another known force, the attractive capillary immersion force between identical particles protruding from the film surface. The results of the measurements provide evidence for an increased hydrodynamic force due to a non-Stokesian resistance to the particle motion. Our findings can be applied to the self-assembly of colloidal particles in a two-dimensional array for coating and to the friction between small species and a solid. We present a new method of measuring the electrophoretic mobility of a particle in a concentrated suspension. The method is used to measure the electrophoretic mobility of PMMA particles (diameter 10 microm) suspended in a mixture of liquid hydrocarbons. The particle volume fraction of the suspension is varied from 0 up to 0.30 and the resulting variation of the electrophoretic mobility is discussed. The suspending liquid is such that its refractive index is very close to that of the particles. Thus the suspension is almost transparent and it is possible to follow through a microscope the motion of one particle. The suspension is subjected to a low-frequency electric field (0.5 Hz). The cell containing the suspension is mounted on a piezoelectric crystal. The displacement that compensates for the particle motion (when the particle image is steady) is determined.  相似文献

Colloidal particles are continuously assembled into crystalline particle coatings using convective fluid flows. Assembly takes place inside a meniscus on a wetting reservoir. The shape of the meniscus defines the profile of the convective flow and the motion of the particles. We use optical interference microscopy, particle image velocimetry, and particle tracking to analyze the particles' trajectory from the liquid reservoir to the film growth front and inside the deposited film as a function of temperature. Our results indicate a transition from assembly at a static film growth front at high deposition temperatures to assembly in a precursor film with high particle mobility at low deposition temperatures. A simple model that compares the convective drag on the particles to the thermal agitation explains this behavior. Convective assembly mechanisms exhibit a pronounced temperature dependency and require a temperature that provides sufficient evaporation. Capillary mechanisms are nearly temperature independent and govern assembly at lower temperatures. The model fits the experimental data with temperature and particle size as variable parameters and allows prediction of the transition temperatures. While the two mechanisms are markedly different, dried particle films from both assembly regimes exhibit hexagonal particle packings. We show that films assembled by convective mechanisms exhibit greater regularity than those assembled by capillary mechanisms.  相似文献

Highly monodispersed emulsifier-free poly(methylstyrene) (PMS) latex particles were prepared via an emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization in the presence of 2,2′-azobis-(2-amidineopropane) dihydrochloride (V-50) as an initiator. A combination of kinetics and molecular weight distribution studies revealed that the polymerization followed the micellization nucleation mechanism. Results showed that an appropriate initiator concentration was necessary to obtain monodisperse and stable latex particles. Conversion of methylstyrene was found to increase significantly with increasing initiator concentrations. However, the size of PMS latex particles decreased with both the increase of initiator concentration and the reaction temperature at a constant ionic strength. The particle size was increased as the ionic strength of the aqueous phase increased, yet the variation of ionic strength had little effect on the particle size distribution. SEM micrographs showed that an agitation rate of 350 rpm or higher was required in order to produce highly monodispersed poly(methylstyrene) latex particles. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The objective of the study was to develop the operational basis for rapid and controlled deposition of crystal coatings from particles of a wide size range. We deposited such structured coatings by dragging with constant velocity a small volume of liquid confined in a meniscus between two plates. Two types of structured coatings were characterized: latex colloidal crystals and thin layers from metallic nanoparticles. The crystal deposition was sped up by use of preconcentrated suspensions. Crystal coatings larger than a few square centimeters were deposited in minutes from aqueous suspension volumes of approximately 10 microL. The governing mechanism of crystal deposition is convective assembly at high volume fractions. The two major process parameters that allow control over the coating thickness and structure were the deposition speed and particle volume fraction. The evaporation rate was not found to affect the process to a large extent. A volumetric flux balance was used to relate the deposition parameters to coating structure and properties. Operational "phase" diagrams were constructed, relating the crystal layer thickness and packing symmetry to the process parameters. These diagrams could be instrumental in transforming the convective colloidal deposition into a robust scaleable technology.  相似文献

Brownian dynamics simulations of the filming process of a mixed polymer latex in the water evaporation stage were performed in order to explore the effect of surface potential on latex particle packing and distribution at a temperature far below the glass transitions of polymers in bulk. Polymer latex particles are modeled as spheres that interact via DLVO potential with various surface charge densities for emulsifier-free emulsion polymerized particles and dispersion polymerized particles. It is found that the distribution of modeled poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene latex particles in the finally formed film exhibits a noticeable dependence of surface potentials of latex particles. When the difference of the surface potentials between binary mixed latex particles is small, the particles distribute randomly. In contrast, when the difference of the surface potentials between binary mixed latex particles is large, heterocoagulation occurs and the polymer latex in which the repulsive electrostatic potential is weak will form clusters in the film. The results are in agreement with laser confocal fluorescence microscopy observations of fluorescent dye labeled poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene mixed latex films. The correlation between latex particles increases with increasing repulsive electrostatic potential, and the spatial order can be obtained at the end of the water evaporation stage. Thermogravimetric analysis and a synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering technique were employed to characterize the structural evolution of a polymeric latex dispersion during the first three stages of film formation at different temperatures and relative humidities. Three intermediate stages were identified: (1) stage I*, (2) stage I**, and (3) stage II*. Stage I* is intermediate to the conventionally defined stages I and II, where latex particles began to crystallization. The change of drying temperature affects the location of the onset of ordering, whereas relative humidity does not. Stage I** is where the latex particles with their diffuse shell of counterions in the fcc structure are in contact with each other. The overlapping of these layers results in an acceleration of the lattice shrinkage due to a decrease of effective charges. Stage II* is where the latex particles, dried well above their T(g), are deformed and packed only partially during film formation due to incomplete evaporation of water in the latex film. This is because of a rapid deformation of the soft latex particles at the liquid/air interface so that a certain amount of water is unable to evaporate from the latex film effectively. For a latex dispersion dried at a temperature close to its minimum film formation temperature, the transition between stages II and III can be continuous because the latex particles deform at a much slower rate, providing sufficient surface area for water evaporation.  相似文献

Comprehensive experimental results are presented for surfactant-free emulsion polymerization of styrene with water-soluble, ionic initiators. Special emphasis is placed on the particle nucleation, the chemical structure of the nucleating species, the change of latex, particle and polymer properties as well as the development of particle morphology with polymerization time. Under special conditions the appearance in transmission electron microscopy pictures of less electron dense anomalous particles is observed. The formation of these structures is discussed and possible formation mechanisms presented. Dialysis of the latexes changed their properties drastically as they became unstable to coagulation. The original latexes did not change their properties over several months. Received: 25 November 1998 Accepted in revised form: 25 January 1999  相似文献

A method for the preparation of stripe‐like monolayers of microspheroids is described. The particles were obtained from polystyrene core/polyglycidol‐rich shell microspheres by stretching poly (vinyl alcohol) films that contain embedded particles. The stretching was performed under controlled conditions at temperatures above the Tg of the films and particles. The elongated films were dissolved in water, and the microspheroids were subsequently removed and purified from the poly (vinyl alcohol). The aspect ratio (AR) of the particles, which denotes the ratio of the lengths of the longer to shorter particle axes, was determined by the film elongation. The AR values were in the range of 2.9‐7.7. Spheroidal particles with various ARs were deposited onto silicon wafers from an ethanol (EtOH) suspension. The particle concentration and volume of the suspension were the same in each experiment. Evaporation of the EtOH yielded stripes of spherical particles packed into nematic‐type colloidal crystals and assembled into monolayers. The orientation of the stripes after ethanol evaporation was perpendicular to the triphasic (silicon‐ethanol‐air) interface along the silicon substrate. The adsorbed stripes on the wafers were characterized in terms of their interstripe distance (ID), stripe width, and crystal domain size. Nematic‐type spheroid arrangements in the stripes were the dominant structure, which enabled denser packing of the particles into colloidal crystals than that allowed by the smectic‐type arrangements. Furthermore, the number of spheroids adsorbed per surface unit of the silicon wafers was similar for all ARs, but the width and frequency of the spheroid stripes adsorbed on the wafers were different.  相似文献

A comprehensive model was developed to investigate the suspension spraying for a radio frequency (RF) inductively coupled plasma torch. Firstly, the electromagnetic field is solved with the Maxwell equations and validated by the analytical solutions. Secondly, the plasma field with different power inputs is simulated by solving the governing equations of the fluid flow coupled with the RF heating. Then, the suspension droplets embedded with nano particles are modeled in a Lagrangian manner, considering feeding, collision, heating and evaporation of the suspension droplets, as well as tracking, acceleration, melting and evaporation of the nano or agglomerate particles. The non-continuum effects and the influence of the evaporation on the heat transfer are considered. This particle model predicts the trajectory, velocity, temperature and size of the in-flight nano- or agglomerate particles. The effects of operating conditions and intial inputs on the particle characteristics are investigated. The statistical distributions of multiple particles’ size, velocity, temperature are also discussed for the cases with and without consideration of suspension droplets collision.  相似文献

Poly(acrylic acid‐co‐sodium acrylate)/zinc oxide, P(AA‐SA)/ZnO, composite latex particles were synthesized by inverse miniemulsion polymerization. The ZnO nanoparticles were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and undergone oleic acid (OA) surface treatment. The X‐ray diffraction pattern and FT‐IR spectra characterized the crystal structure and functional groups of OA‐ZnO nanoparticles. An appropriate formulation in preparing P(AA‐SA) latex particles, ensuring the dominant in situ particle nucleation and growth, was developed in our experiment first. Sodium hydroxide was chosen as a costabilizer, because of its ability to increase the deprotonation of acylic acid and enhance the hydrophilicity of monomer, acrylic acid besides providing osmotic pressure. The growth mechanism of P(AA‐SA)/ZnO composite particles was proposed. The OA‐ZnO nanoparticles were adsorbed on or around the surface of P(AA‐SA) latex particles by hydrophobic interaction, thus enhanced the interfacial tension over latex particles. The P(AA‐SA)/ZnO composite latex particles owned better thermal stability than pure latex particles. The pH regulation capacity was excellent for both ZnO and P(AA‐SA) particles. Combining P(AA‐SA) and ZnO nanoparticles into composite particles, the performance in pH regulation and UV shielding was discussed from our experimental results. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For an evaporating colloidal suspension in which the evaporation velocity exceeds the sedimentation velocity, particles will accumulate at the solvent-air interface. If neither diffusion nor convection can disperse this accumulation, it is expected to grow into a colloidal multilayer several microns thick. We observe that the thickness of colloidal crystals vertically deposited from 1 mum diameter polystyrene latex suspensions of 0.002 < or = phi < or = 0.008 increases linearly with distance in the growth direction and that these thickness profiles are consistent with their growth from a horizontal colloidal layer accumulated beneath the solvent-air interface. We describe a means for performing vertical deposition at growth rates slower than the evaporation rate by adding solvent to the bottom of the colloidal suspension and observe that halving the growth rate of vertical deposition increases both the thickness and the reflectivity of the resulting colloidal crystals, effects indistinguishable from those of doubling the concentration of the colloidal suspension, data also consistent with the colloidal crystals' growth from a horizontal layer of particles beneath the interface. If sufficiently little reorganization is involved as particles move from this horizontal layer to the vertically deposited colloidal crystal, slow vertical deposition of polymer microspheres might be thought of as the Langmuir-Blodgett transfer of a horizontal colloidal crystal onto a vertical substrate. Colloidal crystals deposited using both high concentration and slowed growth can have peak IR reflectance in excess of 80%, exceeding most published values. These observations provide a conceptual framework for engineering vertically deposited colloidal crystals that combine thickness with good optical performance.  相似文献

An investigation into the evaporation of sessile droplets of latex and clay particle suspensions is presented in this work. The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) has been used to study the interfacial phenomena during the drying process of these droplets. Characteristic changes of the crystal oscillating frequency and crystal resistance (damping of the oscillating energy) have been observed and related to the different stages of the evaporation process. Measurements have been made for latex particle sizes from 1.9 to 10 microm and for rough and polished crystals using drops from 0.3 to 1.5 microL. The behavior of the QCM is shown to depend strongly on the size of particles present and on the morphology of the crystal surface. One of the most striking features is a drastic damping of the oscillation energy and corresponding rise in frequency observed during the final stages of evaporation, particularly for the clay suspensions.  相似文献

The emulsifier-free emulsion copolymerization of styrene (St) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of functional monomer acrylic acid (AA) was carried out in batch process. The kinetics was investigated in detail using model function, Integrated Gamma Function. The morphology and size of particles were monitored continuously by TEM all along the polymerization. It was found that the nucleation, polymerization rate increase with increasing concentration of the functional monomer AA, initiator ammonium persulfate (APS), and polymerization temperature T, and APS plays a predominant role in the particle nucleation process. The particle nucleation stage ceased at about 10% conversion and the steady stage can be extended to about 70% conversion. The particle nucleation is likely to yield primary particle via the mechanism of homogeneous coagulative nucleation and coagulation of the primary particle to yield uniform particles. The particle growth in the postnucleation stage is via a shell growth mechanism. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 2649–2656, 1999  相似文献

A polymer‐dispersed liquid‐crystal (PDLC) film was prepared from UV‐curable acrylic, thermally curable epoxy, and a liquid‐crystal (LC) mixture with a fixed LC content of 40 wt %. The UV irradiation and heat treatments were in sequential steps. At first, a phase diagram of a binary mixture of LC (E63) and epoxy [diglycidyl ether of polypropylene glycol (DER736)] was established to understand their miscibility. Then, the phase‐separation temperatures and morphologies of pre‐UV‐cured films with different equivalent DER736/dicyandiamide (DICY) molar ratios were observed. Finally, the polymerization‐induced phase‐separation behavior and morphology of the PDLC film were studied by real‐time observation while the film was maintained at 130 °C under the microscope. The results showed that the acrylic network would not affect the phase‐separation behavior of the E63/DER736 mixture. In both thermally induced and polymerization‐induced phase separations, the undissolved DICY particles acted as nucleation agents and were capable of inducing E63 to separate out early. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
